An interesting fusion.......2006-07-10
Peter Padfield has made his reputation as a naval warfare historian. His biography of Admiral Donitz is particularly worthwhile. In this study, he attempts to combine the social, political, financial, and cultural events of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with a discussion of naval warfare. He provides an interesting evaluation of the effects of maritime supremacy on general world events along with a discussion of the effects of general world events on maritime warfare. Readers with limited background in the general history of this period may find the book somewhat choppy, as Padfield jumps back and forth from military to non-military history. However, his descrtiptions of naval events and battles remain excellent. He has a particuarly good section on the naval aspects of the War of 1812, an area often overlooked by both general and military historians. This is not for the beginner but an experienced reader will find some interesting insights.

Fair's Fair.......2000-01-21
The comment in the previous review about thermal radiation and heat radiation is fair enough, but I feel the reviewer is being unfair in other respects. The reason why there is no "See.." in the main text is because there is a very good index at the back! For instance under Carbon in the index, there is a page reference to radiocarbon dating. OK, there is no mention of carbon dating, so you would have to see radiocarbon dating, but you only have to scan a few lines of the index under the main entry on Carbon to find it. The comment about atomic energy is (unintentionally) misleading. Sure, the entry on atomic energy is very short, but there is a fair-sized entry on nuclear power and there is a cross-reference from atomic energy. Although the entry on nuclear energy is rather shorter than the two entries on oil and gas exploitation (a more relevant comparision than black pepper), it is backed up another fair-sized entry on nuclear reactors. I do think McGraw-Hill have made a decent effort to create an affordable science encyclopedia. (This refers to the 3rd edition, but I imagine the 4th edition is very similar).
A great deal of info, poorly organized, wrong proportions.......1998-10-30
This book contains an enormous amount of information. However, there are two major problems. 1. It is often hard to find what you are looking for if you aren't using the same terminology they are. For instance, I looked for "Carbon dating", and it isn't listed - either in the text or the index. It is under "radiocarbon dating". There is no "carbon dating - see radiocarbon dating". I looked for "thermal radiation" and it wasn't there. It was under "heat radiation", again with no "see ...". In fact, there are no "see ..." in the text to point you to the right title. 2. The book claims that the material is given space according to its importance. "Atomic energy" gets 6 lines (2 sentences). I flipped to a random page, and "black pepper" gets more than twice as many lines, and "blackberry" gets 3 times as many lines.

Well, the above was my original review of my 4th edition, which I wrote after having the book about a week. Now I find that the index is indeed good, I'm just not used to looking in an index rather in the body of the book.
Even the longer "Nuclear power" article is only a little longer than "blackberry". There is very little on evolution. Having seen the full 20-30 volume set at the library, this one-volume "concise" version misses a lot that is in the full set, and I'm not convinced that the abridged versions of the articles are as complete as they should be. But overall, I like it a little better than I did initially. I'll give it a 4.5.

Long Book, Good Book.......2001-12-04
This is one of the best science books ever!! It has hundreds, maybe thousands, of entries all about SCIENCE!!!!! It is 2080 pges. long, but within all of those pages is a lot of info. It has everytng from A15 phases to zygomycotina. In fact, the only bad thing about this book is that it uses huge words in the entries that I don't hat they mean! Also, this book is directed torward more teenagers than kids, and if you don't like science, then you might as well nat waste your money. Also, anyone who's on any Math/Science team (me!) this is an invaluable resource. This is a great book, and anyone who likes science will LOVE this book.Thanks for reading, and have a nice day.

No good deer books.......2007-02-09
There are nice pictures and nice tidbits of info about deer but generally there are no good, unbiased deer books that exist. Most books are loaded with jargon about hunting and "management" practices. Sadly, I have yet to find a good deer book with unbiased educated information about deer. I wish the book had more pictures for each type of deer and more specific info about the animals. Many deer books just talk about deer and people, something I don`t care about. If I wanted to read a hunting magazine I`d buy one for my bathroom reading.

Good book about deer around the U.S., along with moose and reindeer. Includes info about deer habitat and breeding, etc. Better price buying through Amazon.com than Barnes and Noble.

Absolutely extraordinary!.......2002-08-04
This is - regardless of your religious persuasion - one of the best books for helping children deal with and understand death and dying that has ever been written. It's about the death of a child's grandfather - his going through "the great change," and frames death in a way that is absolutely beautiful and meaningful. Highly recommended for everybody, particularly those with children who are trying to make sense of the death of their elders.

Book Description
The International Symposium on Deer of China centered on the deer of China and included research conducted on deer which are distributed in China. However, the history of management of North American red deer (elk) was also reviewed as a reference, as was the recent status of deer farming in New Zealand.
The main aim of the symposium was to communicate the results of recent research, to determine the direction of future studies and conservation measures, and to discuss ways to encourage further research conducted by international teams. Forty-four oral presentations and 32 poster presentations were given during the symposium. This volume presents 34 of the oral and 9 of the poster presentations, with many of the posters presented here in the form of short communications.
