Book Description
Most histories of the Civil War focus on battles and top brass. Hardtack and Coffee is one of the few to give a vivid, detailed picture of what ordinary soldiers endured every day—in camp, on the march, at the edge of a booming, smoking hell. John D. Billings of Massachusetts enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and curvived the conditions he recorded. The authenticity of his book is heightened by the many drawings that a comrade, Charles W. Reed, made in the field.
This is the story of how the Civil War soldier was recruited, provisioned, and disciplined. Described here are the types of men found in any outfit; their not very uniform uniforms; crowded tents and makeshift shelters; difficulties in keeping clean, warm, and dry; their pleasure in a cup of coffee; food rations, dominated by salt pork and the versatile cracker or hardtack; their brave pastimes in the face of death; punishments for various offenses; treatment in sick bay; firearms and signals and modes of transportation. Comprehensive and anecdotal, Hardtack and Coffee is striking for the pulse of life that runs through it.

Customer Reviews:
Hardtack and Coffee: A Must for Teachers and Students.......2006-02-25
Hardtack and Coffee provides an excellent picture of Army life in the mid-nineteenth century. The sketches illustrate the text superbly. This is a useful handbook for students and teachers as well as an intriguing introduction to the Civil War.
Civil War reenactors, buy this!.......2004-12-01
I am a Civil War reenactor, and this book has been an excellent source of ideas for first person scenarios and ideas for living history. It is an insightful, unique record of the soldier's life for living historians or students of history. I would highly recommend this engaging book.
A Sympathetic and Educating Examination........2004-07-01
This engaging book fills the void that other Civil War histories leave, and that is an understanding of the everyday experiences of the foot soldier. "Hardtack and Coffee or the Unwritten Story of Army Life" by John D. Billings is an exhaustive and fascinating look back at the flesh, bones, and blood of those lines and arrows on the maps of Civil War battle strategies.
The book is filled with anecdotes, observations, and songs arising from the era. (I very much appreciated the introduction which details the election of 1860 and started the whole terrible tragedy that ensued over the next half decade.) The generous amount of illustration truly helps evoke the period. "Hardtack and Coffee" is a perfect companion to Bell Irvin Wiley's "Life of Billy Yank: The Common Soldier of the Union" and "The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy". And it is a perfect part of anyone's Civil War/American History library.
Rocco Dormarunno, author of THE FIVE POINTS
Good laughs, good read and first-hand real history.......2004-06-18
I'm one of those men with the "Civil War Itch" who can't get enough reading, can't get enough time on the battlefields. This book is hands-down one of my favorites in my extensive collection, re-read several times and dog-eared. It's something I always put in my bag for air-travel reading, because you can pick it up and put it down when you need to...the author and the illustrator both were participants in the Conflict, so you know it's accurate. The content is educational but not stuffy, since it was written to explain to soldiers' families what exactly Union Army life was like...and the humor still carries through to this day. After you've read the historical studies or walked a battlefield, THIS is the book you want to read to put yourself in the shoes of the everyday soldier--and it's easy to do with the author's skills. For me, the best chuckles are the chapters "Jonahs and Beats", and "The Army Mule". A must-read for those wanting more than just a general's biography or an order of battle.
The Story of the Soldiers of the Civil War!.......2004-01-10
This is the best book on the life of the Civil War soldier. The other reviews attest to this, so here is something different.
Charles W. Reed, the illustrator, was ALSO a Civil War veteran.
He served in the Ninth Massachusetts Battery and won the Medal of Honor at Gettysburg for saving his commanding officer, Captain
John Bigelow, who had been seriously wounded in the fight at the
Trostle Farm on 2 July 1863.
My favorite chapter was the one on the army mule.

Book Description
From Two Republics to One Divided examines Peru’s troubled transition from colonial viceroyalty to postcolonial republic from the local perspective of Andean peasant politics. Thurner’s reading of the Andean peasantry’s engagement and disengagement with the postcolonial state challenges long-standing interpretations of Peruvian and modern Latin American history and casts a critical eye toward Creole and Eurocentric ideas about citizenship and nationalism.
Working within an innovative and panoramic historical and linguistic framework, Thurner examines the paradoxes of a resurgent Andean peasant republicanism during the mid-1800s and provides a critical revision of the meaning of republican Peru’s bloodiest peasant insurgency, the Atusparia Uprising of 1885. Displacing ahistorical and nationalist readings of Inka or Andean continuity, and undermining the long-held notion that the colonial legacy is the dominant historical force shaping contemporary Andean reality, Thurner suggests that in Peru, the postcolonial legacy of Latin America’s nation-founding nineteenth century transfigured, and ultimately reinvented, the colonial legacy in its own image.

Insightful view of Indians and nation in 19th-century Peru.......1998-11-23
Mark Thurner's recent FROM TWO REPUBLICS TO ONE DIVIDED is a landmark contribution to Andean history and historical anthroplogy writ large--a book bound to provoke healthy controversy among scholars and students alike. This is the first book-length study to deploy insights from "post-colonial" theory to explore the complex roles of indigenous peoples in the politics and political imagination of republican Peru. Based on remarkable archival research about indigenous communities and the state in the little-studied Huaylas-Ancash region, the book begins by insightfuly tracing the paradoxical fate of the so-called colonial "Indian republics" in early republican politics. The second half of the book zeros in on the Atusparia revolt of the latter part of the century, as a sign of the widening gulf between Creole nationhood and indigenous politics as Peru approached the 20th century. All in all, Thurner offers a complex and thoughtful alternative to both "integrationist" and "resistance" visions of the role of Indians in the liberal-republican world, and in its theoretical sections new ways of thinking about ethnicity and the "national problem" across Latin American history. The American Historical Review already hails this work as "an important book" that provides a "pathbreaking analysis of peasants'use of republican discourse." The Hispanic American Historical Review proclaims it a "sophisticated study" with "impressive" "intellectual and analytical power". Whatever, FROM TWO REPUBLICS TO ONE DIVIDED ought be on the shelf of every serious (and not-so-serious) student of the region.

Customer Reviews:
Should be on every Developer and Engineer's shelf........2006-11-01
Dr. Taylor does his usual great job covering a difficult subject - ties in well with his "Applied Life Data Analysis", the revered reliability resource. Because of his GE background, he emphasizes experimental plans and analysis methods (i.e.: partially censored) which permit you to make good predictions regarding a product or system while you are still collecting data (e.g.: management wants an answer NOW, even if the experiment is not completed). A few more examples of how "typical" systems behave would be helpful, but otherwise a great resource.
Great companion volume to Applied Life Data Analysis.......2004-01-30
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the definitive classic in accelerated life testing. It's a great companion volume to Dr. Nelson's "Applied Life Data Analysis" which remains one of the best reliability textbooks ever written. I have noticed that all major reliability and accelerated testing programs use this book as their main reference - proof of the books usefulness. My only compaint is with the publishers for the steep price - now that they're bringing out a lower cost version of Applied Life Data Analysis, I hope they'll bring out a low-cost or paperback version of this classic as well.
best statistical account of accelerated testing.......2000-06-22
Nelson is a private consultant who has worked on countless practical problems in reliability from his consulting practice and previous employment at General Electric. He is an excellent lecturer and writer. His earlier book "Applied Life Data Analysis" was considered to be one of the best texts on reliability.
This book is very thorough in its treatment of all aspects of accelerated testing and is filled with many good references. Nelson carefully defines the mathematical models which consist of two components, (1) an acceleration function which describes how the mean lifetime changes as a function of the acceleration factor and (2) a probability distribution that explains the random variability of outcomes at each acceleration factor. A particular mean function could be the Arrhenius relationship and the probability distribution could be exponential. Hence there is not a single Arrhenius acceleration model but rather an Arrhenius-exponential, an Arrhenius-lognormal or an Arrhenius-Weibull model. The book is filled with interesting theory and examples. Nelson provides excellent practical guidance based on his wealth of experience.

Book Description
The daily work of quality and reliability professionals frequently involves the design of life tests for reliability demonstration, as well as the estimation of product reliability based on the tests performed.
This book presents the equations necessary to determine the minimum sample size required for an accelerated life test which can be used to demonstrate that an item meets the specified goals within a given statistical precision. It also gives the formulas for estimating the true average failure rate by means of a confidence level. The equations are straightforward and hand calculation is practical. For frequent and repetitive calculation, a computer program is described that eliminates the need for tables. Requiring just a basic knowledge of basic statistics, practical, step-by-step procedures are given for the most common life distributions: exponential, Weibull, normal, and log-normal. The book also discusses several practical aspects which should be considered for sound application of the procedures.
