Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Litany of security aspects, protection mechanisms on credit cards .......2006-10-26

Considering that this book has been sitting here, for quite some
time without a review, (which doesn't mean it hasn't sold
reasonably well - it may have well done so) I'll lay out its
first review.

First, the fact that this book exists, is a milestone in
e-commerce, and in self-publishing (through Canada's Trafford, no
less), considering that it's a topic that is extremely
specialized, boring, somewhat sterile, complicated yet in so many
ways present everywhere, at all times, considering there's almost
1 million ATM's, and 20 million points of sale/ merchants, around
the world taking credit cards.

If the objective of the author was to lend credibility to his
consulting business, he's succeeded considering the wealth of
information, extremely up-to-date, realistically and in a well
organized manner, on credit cards and points of sale, coupled
with the risk of fraud in that activity.

The author succeeds in giving confidence to merchants in
accepting credit cards, by explaining the litany of security
aspects, protection mechanisms and procedures that are present
during the transactions. I won't repeat what the book discusses,
but suffice to say that there are in excess of 40 chapters, most
short or medium in length, touching upon essential topics.
Obviously, with so many areas, none can be looked at in profound
detail, but this is not a drawback, considering that this book is
more of an introduction, than a how-to manual for websites,
ecommerce, software choices, or advanced security suggestions.

For those in the banking system, or working at merchant
locations, the author's instruction amounts to learning an
entirely new language, such is the terminology, the procedures,
the aspects of thinking and analyzing the "usage" aspects of
credit cards as forms of payment. As such, it can clarify,
justify, make coherent various strategies and requirements that
are seen at points of sales, and at banks for those handling
transactions which up until now were perhaps seen in isolation,
vs. as part of a greater whole, or of a larger encompassing
strategy. It assigns proper names to specific procedures and
scenarios and requirements.

For someone working in accounting, accounts receivable, at the
cash, or running a business, (a store, for example), the book is
an education on the struggle of maintaining the course vs.
abusers and fraudsters, and in how potentially difficult it can
be for store owners in maintaining their banking relationship in
face of the same abusers of "Credit cards" as forms of payment.

The author suggests that there are more volumes to be written in
the future, clearly admitting that a lot more could have been
said. Speaking for myself, a next volume would be welcome.

Lastly, perhaps 10 pages of repetition could have been edited
out of the book (such as about vbv, or securecode) or even the 4
or 5 typos seen along the 200 or so pages of the book, for
example, but, as an INTRODUCTION to the subject matter, clearly,
the author is agile in educating the reader on credit cards and
security and how they must be handled by all the parties
involved (acquirers, issuers, shoppers, merchants, etc.)

Book Description

Keep your butt down and your ears up, people, 'cause here comes a tie-in to the hit History Channel show, featuring outrageous host R. Lee Ermey, who answers questions about military technology -- past, present, and future. Now in its fourth season, Mail Call is the most popular program on the History Channel and the only show in America where the host has a bazooka and knows how to use it! In this tie-in book, just as on the show, R. Lee Ermey -- in his singular, in-your-face style -- provides entertaining and little-known facts about the vast arsenal of deadly hardware used by the armed forces. Mail Call is filled with historical anecdotes, interesting factoids, quotes from top military experts, and much more. This book is sure to appeal not only to military nuts and "gear heads," which is a very sizable audience in itself, but also to garden-variety history buffs; Ermey's repertoire runs the historical gamut from ancient catapults to Samurai swords to Civil War cannons to modern grenade launchers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fun to read, interesting information and worth the price.......2007-04-12

First, I always enjoy watching R. Lee Ermey (GUNNY!) on the History Channel. The book is packed with questions from "Mail Call" viewers (the questions are then answered by Gunny himself) with sections on weapons, gears, vehicles, planes, ships, soldiers, etc...

It's an easy and fun read packed with some great trivia and great information that is written in the same style as Ermey talks on his show. The pictures are a bit fuzzy on some of the pages, but that's no big deal. The book is a great addition to my military history book collection and I know I'll review it often to learn new facts/information about the military.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift For the Father In Law.......2006-03-26

Super gift for my Father In law -- retired USAF and lots of interesting historical information with Lee's sense of humor and wonderful delivery.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2005-07-21

I have the Mail Call series 1 and 2 on DVD. The book has some new material, but is a summary of the DVD series, complete with some bad video capture photos. I'm 60% way through it and have encountered several proofing errors, such as listing Carlos Hathcock as having a "25,000 yard" kill. That would make it a 14.2 mile shot! I'm a big fan of the Gunny, and it pains me to give the book 2 stars.
I can't wait for series 3 and 4 to be released on DVD though!

3 out of 5 stars Okay, I'll say it..........2005-02-18

... I was really disappointed by this book.

I'm a fan of "Mail Call," of course, and when I heard Gunny tell me his book was coming out, I made a point of securing a copy as soon as I could. This is a nice enough book, I suppose, but it could have been so much more.

If you've got copies of "Mail Call" on tape, disc, or TiVo, you already have this book, which consists entirely of questions and answers taken straight from the show. Most if not all of the illustrations appear to have come right off the screen, like some sort of old kinescope. Many of the images aren't even particularly sharp, coming as they do straight off of video. I'm not sure if there's anything here -- with the exception of a few trivia questions -- that hasn't already appeared on the show.

I'm not hatin' on Gunny (I'm not that dumb), but I want people who like him and the show and are interested in this book to know what they're getting. It's a nice souvenir for fans of the show, but it doesn't add a lot, in information or entertainment value, to what we already have on TV several times a week.

Carry on.

    Book Description

Tired of seeing your mailbox jammed with unwanted advertising mailers?

Irritated at those dinnertime solicitation calls?

So was author Jackie Plusch! So she put together this remarkable book that contains three easy steps for freeing yourself from these unwanted intrusions.

Junk Mail Solution contains everything you need to know, and even provides you with pre-addressed cards to major mass marketing companies telling them to TAKE YOU OFF THEIR MAILING AND CALLING LISTS! All you need to do is fill in your name and address, stamp, and mail. As a bonus, the book also includes script cards (place them by your phones) so you know exactly what to say to telemarketers when they call.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Less Junk Mail in a Flash.......2000-12-28

The information and postcards in Junk Mail Solution work wonders. My mother was on every mailing list imaginable. Thanks to Junk Mail Solution, she now receives almost none. And stopping the junk mail was so easy! I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to reduce the time spent each day sorting through mail. And you'll save a tree as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Halting Solicitations.......2000-11-24

Junk Mail Solution explains how we wind up on so many solicitation lists and shows how to get off those rolls. The greatest value of this book is in the signs and pre-addressed post cards. There are signs to place near the telephones to remind you to utter the nine magic words. And there are cards to mail to the 26 list maintenance companies and list associations.

Of course, if you are a direct mailer or telemarketer, you may learn to breach some of these defenses. :)

Jackie Plusch is a professional organizer. She established the Clutter Cutter, a service to help individuals and groups manage space, time and materials. She soon discovered her clients were wasting hours handling unwanted mail and telephone calls.

As a publisher, author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I like books that provide solutions without wasting my time with padding. .....

                  Book Description

This book is the first comprehensive history of the development of child study during the early part of the twentieth century. Most nineteenth-century scientists deemed children unsuitable subjects for study, and parents were hostile to the idea. But by 1935, the study of the child was a thriving scientific and professional field. Here, Alice Boardman Smuts shows how interrelated movements—social and scientific—combined to transform the study of the child.

Drawing on nationwide archives and extensive interviews with child study pioneers, Smuts recounts the role of social reformers, philanthropists, and progressive scientists who established new institutions with new ways of studying children. Part history of science and part social history, this book describes a fascinating era when the normal child was studied for the first time, a child guidance movement emerged, and the newly created federal Children’s Bureau conducted pathbreaking sociological studies of children.

                      Book Description

This book surveys the broad field of mechanical alloying from a scientific and technological perspective to form a timely and comprehensive resource valuable to both students and researchers. The treatment progresses from the historical background through a description of the process, the different metastable effects produced, and the mechanisms of phase formation to applications of mechanically alloyed products. The presentation is straightforward and easy to understand but does not compromise the scientific accuracy. It includes an unusually extensive listing of the results of different metastable effects obtained in various alloy systems along with thorough references in each chapter.

                        Book Description

Mechanical alloying (MA) is a solid-state processing technique allowing production of macroscopically homogeneous materials starting from various powder mixtures. The process is generally carried out in a high-energy ball mill and involves repeated welding, fracturing and rewelding of powder particles. MA is now capable of producing several stable and metastable phases, including supersaturated solid solutions, metastable crystalline and quasicrystalline intermediate phases and metallic glasses. MA is now applied to all types of materials - metals, ceramics, and polymers, and is being actively pursued by industry, academia, and research laboratories all over the world. The technique is now called "mechanical alloying" if one starts from blended elemental powders or "mechanical milling" if a prealloyed powder is used as the starting material. The present bibliography covers information on mechanical alloying and milling of materials starting from 1970 (when it was recognized that MA has become a commercial/viable material processing technique instead of just a grinding method) to1995 All the available references are presented in a chronological fashion. Under each year, the entries will be mentioned in an alphabetical order according to the first-named author. Each reference provides the listing of all the authors (in the sequence they appear in the publication), full title of the publication, source (journal, book chapter, conference proceedings, patent, etc.), volume, year of publication, page numbers (starting and ending) and language of the document, if it is not in English. These items will be followed by letter symbols to indicate the topics and properties discussed in thatpublication. A comprehensive author index, subject index, and material index, will also be provided at the end of the bibliographic entries.
