Book Description
Undoubtedly the most famous fighter type to see service on either side during World War 1, the Fokker Dr I was a revelation when it entered service on the western front in 1917. Manfred von Richthofen’s JG 1 ‘circus’ was the first Jasta to completely re-equip with the new fighter, and in the skilled hands of its numerous aces the Dr I proved a formidable opponent. The Dr I remained in service on the Western Front until replaced by the superior Fokker D VII in May 1918. Just weeks prior to that, however, Germany’s leading ace, the great ‘Red Baron’, had been killed at the controls of a Dr I.

Great book w/ many Profiles.......2005-11-29
Another great job by Osprey. Very good info on the Dr.1 and its pilots. 40 profiles, showing many top views of wings and stabilizer/elevators. Shows a few cowls, also. Good index. Good for the price.
NOTE: There is a great deal of debate over the colors of WW1 German aircraft, because all the photos are black and white! I would say this book chooses some colors that might disagree with the more knowledgeable WW1 aircraft enthusiast. Remember that this book is a basic review of the Dr.1, and it does not spend 10 pages looking into what color Voss' cowl was, whether or not Lothar von Richthofen's upper wing was yellow.
Dreidecker aces.......2002-01-10
This is a very good book. If you are a modeller, so buy it. If you, like me, is just interested on this subject, buy it as well. Comprehensive photo material and superb color plates. Unlike in Albatros Aces, this time Mr. Franks has added a good number of accounts, some personal, of the events about the units and the men who fought in and against the famous, although short lived, Fokker triplane, the "Red Baron" included. Excellent.

Can't believe I'm the first to review this..........2007-04-28
I'm absolutely, positively NOT an expert on this topic. I'm interested in the topic for its own sake, and I'm also interested in cultural and environmental factors that foster creativity. I have kept this book in my car for the last couple weeks, and I find myself reading a passage or two here and there. I've been reading it along with Abdul-Jabbar's recent book. There are quite a few books out there on the Harlem Renaissance, and the last 100 years of African-American history. I'm not familiar with most of them.
Here's why I loved THIS book.
The writing is superb. The passages are about 1-4 pages each, and they confront the reader with the snap, crackle and pop of concise, crisp journalistic prose. The authors have a knack for deepening knowledge while causing the reader to want to know even more about the topic. The portraits tend to be descriptive without being judgmental, which adds credibility to the passages and force to the general topic. At the same time, the authors seem psychologically savvy, providing internally consistent life histories in many instances. There's a phenomenal amount of information here about remarkable people and places. The scholarship appears to be quite good, with helpful references following each passage.

A misguided venture.......2005-09-14
Why would an author who believes Sam Spade to have been created by Raymond Chandler (page 62) bother to write about pulp fiction writers? And, more to the point, why would you bother to read him?
There is little actual information in the book, except for generalities, brief plot synopses and more or less widely available biographical data. There are a few interesting snippets here and there about some lesser figures, but they are hardly worth your 20 bucks.

I've been a fan of Lee Server's books for a while now (don't miss OVER MY DEAD BODY, a fun and dirty tour of 1950s-era pulp paperbacks), and this book does not disappoint. It's an encylopedia-style rundown of "schmucks with Underwoods," but don't let that stop. Half the fun is flipping the page and finding some other forgotten scribe who deserves to be remembered (and read). Highly recommended.

An excellent, basic reference which should be considered for any serious health library collection.

Get this one.......2007-05-04
First of all I'm not an old west officianado, and most every critique of old west books I've seen people always want to go into some rant about the voracity of this story or that. Well, I'll bet even the experts will own a copy of this book even if they claim not to like it. The wealth and wide range of old west personas in this book is everything I hoped it would be. Every entry offers something interesting and you get a real feel of how things must have really been based on all the bits and pieces of information when taken on a whole. I don't know if the experts will ever agree on one perfect old west book, but until they do, I recommend this one.

Book Description
This book contains papers presented at a workshop on the use of parallel techniques in symbolic and algebraic computation held at Cornell University in May 1990. The eight papers in the book fall into three groups. The first three papers discuss particular programming substrates for parallel symbolic computation, especially for distributed memory machines. The next three papers discuss novel ways of computing with elements of finite fields and with algebraic numbers. The finite field technique is especially interesting since it uses the Connection Machine, a SIMD machine, to achieve surprising amounts of parallelism. One of the parallel computing substrates is also used to implement a real root isolation technique. One of the crucial algorithms in modern algebraic computation is computing the standard, or Gröbner, basis of an ideal. The final two papers discuss two different approaches to speeding their computation. One uses vector processing on the Cray and achieves significant speed-ups. The other uses a distributed memory multiprocessor and effectively explores the trade-offs involved with different interconnect topologies of the multiprocessors.
