Book Description
In the 1st century BC, Strabo wrote of the Celts: ‘The whole race... is madly fond of war, high-spirited and quick to battle... and on whatever pretext you stir them up, you will have them ready to face danger, even if they have nothing on their side but their own strength and courage’. This book gives an insight into the life of the Celtic warrior, and his experience of battle – on foot, on horseback, and as a charioteer. It also details Celtic society and studies the vital ritual nature of Celtic warfare, from the naked gaesatae to the woad-painted warriors.
Customer Reviews:
A good title for the amateur historian or wargamer.......2007-10-01
Like all Osprey books, this volume is intended to give the reader a basic introduction to the subject, rather than a deep academic understanding. This volume succeeds in that endeavor. The book describes the basic societal structure of the Celtic peoples in the time period addressed, with information on arms and equipment, rituals, approaches to warfare, etc. The color plates are well done.
This particular book does not in any way present a political argument regarding the relative cultural merits of the Celtic peoples versus the Romans, and it is hard to see whay a reviewer would attack it on those grounds. I can only assume from his review here and in a number of other books about the Celts that reviewer Guardala has some kind of bizarre axe to grind.
Celtic Warrior.......2007-03-31
An essential book for someone interested in Iron Age European warfare. This book begins with an introduction to the identity of the Celts, and then goes on to give a chronology of major events in their history between the beginning of the Halstatt period and the Construction of Emperor Hadrianus' Wall. The next section tells specifically of the warrior's role in the structure of society, his spirituality, and how he could gain or improve his standing in the tribe. Next, the author gives a description of the appearance, dress, and battle gear of the Celts. After this is 'The Face of Battle' shows how the Celt fought and the Celtic warrior's experience in battle. The final section, 'Aftermath' tells of the warrior's superstitions and the importance of sacrifice, spoils of war, suicide, headhunting, and splendid burial in the warrior's culture. After this comes a brief glossary, biblography, places to visit, a detailed plate commentary, and an index. The plates, by Wayne Reynolds, are excellent, depicted colorful and powerful scenes.
Plate A shows us the standard Gaulish noble warrior, with his weapons, armor, clothing, and gear.
Plate B shows the Battle of Telamon, 225 BC, in which the Gaesati and the Gauls of northern Italy were defeated by the Roman Republic. Several naked Gaesati are shown trying to defend themselves from the legionaries' pila.
Plate C is a detailed depiction of the helmets, shields, spearheads, chainmail, and swords used by Gaulish warriors.
Plate D depicts a brightly-clad British chieftain meeting with a client warrior, whose young son is the foster-son of the chieftain. According to custom, the father and son do not acknowledge each other.
Plate E shows a horse-warrior of the Senones, a Celtic people of Cisalpine Gaul, and gives visual details on the gear of the Celtic cavalryman.
Plate F shows a young Cisalpine warrior displaying the severed head of a Roman soldier he has just slain in single combat.
Plate G, visually one of the most exciting in the book, shows the valiant charge of the Nervii and their fellow Belgian Gauls at the Battle of the Sambre, 57 BC. This Gaulish army was made almost entirely of infantry, yet they were upon the Romans so quickly that, had Caesar not arrived, several of his legions would have been routed.
Plate H gives us a British warrior, with his arms and chest decorated in swirling woad patterns, in his chariot with his similarily painted charioteer, who wears a headband, a symbol of the Celtic charioteer according to Irish myth.
Plate I shows several warriors like the one in the previous plate skirmishing with Caesar's legionaries during an invasion of Britain. The legionaries were unarmored and carried only sidearms, thus rendering them very vulnerable to the Celts with their chariots and longswords.
Plate J shows the fate of many warriors that were captured in battle-slavery in the southern world. The four captives in this picture, chained together and guarded by warriors, are being exchanged to Roman or Greek traders for wine.
This book, like all Osprey books, presents detailed information in a concise and jargon-free manner It explores the mindset and worldview of the Celtic warrior, and shows why, with their independent culture totally lacking in self-control, they were conquered by the Romans.
I would very highly recommend this book. I would give it 10 stars if I could!
Great source for weapons, armour, tactics, and more!.......2006-08-31
Great source for weapons, armour, tactics, and more! The color plates inside alone are worth the reason to buy this...But it is also filled with great info and more!
YAWN! READ PATRICK GEARY'S "MYTH OF NATIONS.".......2006-02-10
The commentary on the plates are good, but some of the plates seemed almost cartoonish. Certainly not up to Angus McBride's standard. Their rigid individualistic and ritualistic military methods ensured their destruction! The author is another excuse maker who can't accept that "Rome Triumphed against the odds." No one before the 18th century called themselves Celtic! These various tribal peoples had no permanent victories and their oral traditions prove nothing! "They refused to write their histories down. Since they were not a singular people with cities as in a CIVILIZATION, one should not be surprised that they rejected literacy" The written histories are largely backed by the archaeological record. Basically, there is little in this book that is new or insightful. If you like this topic read juliette Wood, Miranda Green, & Barry Cunliffe's books.
Celtic Warrior.......2004-02-15
Yet another great one from Osprey. Great easy to read info and history on the Celtic Warrior from the 300 BC-AD 100 time period and the illustrations are flat out amazing. Highly recomended for anybody interested in the Celts as well as reenactors and SCA types!

Book Description
Numerous volumes have been written on the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten, from Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty. No less important a figure was Akhenaten's father, the pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned roughly 1391-1353 b.c.e. Among Amenhotep III's undertakings were his roles as leader of numerous campaigns in Syro-Palestine; builder of numerous temples, shrines, and buildings in Thebes and Memphis; and husband to Queen Tiyi and a bevy of lesser wives, including daughters of the kings of Babylon, Hatti and Mitanni. Amenhotep III above all encouraged foreign exploration and trade to regions far beyond the borders of Egypt. This study of Amenhotep III reveals a fascinating and complex individual, responsible in more than one way for the religious and political upheavals that occurred during the reign of his son, Akhenaten.
Amenhotep III: Perspectives on His Reign, edited by David O'Connor and Eric H. Cline consists of a series of essays on this complex individual and his reign. In addition to offering several provocative and ground-breaking essays, this volume serves as a compendium and sourcebook for hard-to-obtain details about the reign of Amenhotep III.
The volume begins with an overview of the pharaoh by Larry Berman: his life, his family, and the history of his reign. Betsy Bryan describes the historical antecedents of Amenhotep's reign. Ray Johnson deals first with the building activities of Amen-hotep III and then presents a study of his carved relief decoration, with particular emphasis on the tendencies towards "Atenism." Arielle Kozloff discusses a variety of small objects including cosmetic spoons, glass vessels, jewelry, and funerary equipment. David O'Connor discusses city planning, building functions, and aspects of religion in light of the contemporary Egyptian worldview. Bill Murnane's chapter on government is a fascinating glimpse of the system of government in place at the time. Extensive documentation is provided on the activities of Amenhotep in the Aegean and Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Nubia, and Syro-Palestine. The volume concludes with John Baines's chapter on the Amarna Age.
Amenhotep III: Perspectives on His Reign is a valuable contribution to pharaonic studies. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars interested in Mediterranean literatures and cultures. It draws on literary, archaeological, and historical material to form an interdisciplinary study of a complex figure in pharaonic Egypt.
David O'Connor is Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Ancient Egyptian Art, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Eric H. Cline is Assistant Professor of History, Xavier University.
