Book Description

Unmistakably original, utterly heartfelt, stranger than fiction, hotter than any off-the-rack gay fantasy!

Building on the success of his extraordinary debut—the critically acclaimed, #1 "men's interest" bestseller A Night in the Barracks—former U.S. Marine Alex Buchman presents a spellbinding, startlingly unique collection of erotic memoirs by or about "bad boys" in the Armed Forces.

Buchman's radical approach to an otherwise rigidly formulaic sub-genre: he does the legion of purportedly "true confessions" books with a military theme one better: the first-person narratives he has assembled actually are true.

Boldly defying the conventions of gay male "one-handed reading," the unembellished chronicles Buchman brings us from the intensely homoerotic secret world of men in uniform are more erotically charged than any porn-by-numbers fantasy.

The theme of Barracks Bad Boys is trouble. All-too-true stories of criminally sexy soldiers and sailors in trouble, who cause trouble, or who just plain are trouble.

The unvarnished accounts of romance with baby-faced deserters bound for the brig make for riveting reading. Equally gripping is the disarmingly candid pillow talk of young military men whose trouble runs deeper than mere "unauthorized absence" or "indecent acts."

Some of the surprises you'll encounter in Barracks Bad Boys include:

a straight, married soldier's detailed description of his one and only sexual experience with another man
a seasoned military chaser's review of his all-time favorite sailor-hustlers
a dazed gay studies author's "I should have known better" journal documenting how young sailors half his age seduced him, gave him street drugs, and pressured him to videotape them performing lewd acts
Editor Buchman's own offbeat and powerful story of being taken by surprise by the sexual advance of a Marine sergeant who began rubbing Buchman's chest and asking him if he felt an "urge to be evil . . ."

By turns hair-raising and wrenching, poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, these authentic accounts of sex in the Armed Forces are sure to elicit one universal reaction: no one could make this up!

Barracks Bad Boys is compulsory reading for anyone interested in men in uniform; human sexuality in the military; and cutting-edge nonfiction literary erotica.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "Bad" Boiz.......2007-08-12

This collection of erotica is very inclusive and brings to mind the truly "bad" or unorthodox behavior of the men in this survey. They also have the feel of being truthful and the editor has done a good job of selecting just the right stories to present including that of a woman who goes after hot marines in San Diego. If you're into gay erotica this is truly worthwhile reading.

1 out of 5 stars What a Piece of Crap!.......2007-03-29

The caption says it all... a real load of CRAP. Hot CRAP on the cover.... but CRAP all the same... Don't bother getting this dreck! If you want a TRUE account of gay experience in the military, pick up Steven Zeeland's Barrack Buddies & Soldier Lovers (by Hayworth Press)( Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers: Dialogues With Gay Young Men in the U.S. Military (Haworth Gay and Lesbian Studies) (Haworth Gay and Lesbian Studies) ) - the subsequent Sailors and Sexual Identity (by Hayworth Press) Sailors and Sexual Identity: Crossing the Line Between "Straight" and "Gay" in the U.S. Navy (Haworth Gay & Lesbian Studies,) (Haworth Gay & Lesbian Studies,) or Masculine Marine (also by Hayworth) Masculine Marine: Homoeroticism in the U.S. Marine Corps (Haworth Gay & Lesbian Studies) (Haworth Gay & Lesbian Studies) ... Zeeland, although never in the military himself, details the true accounts of his interview subjects in painstaking detail. The Zeeland Threesome (he would love that I called them that!!!) are a much better read.

Alex Buchman writes a great book as described by him, nothing less. His stories are reasonable, believable and well written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

"Norwegians, Swedes and More" provides a synopsis of our ancestral family components; Norwegians and Swedes as well as those of the French, German, English and Canadian sescent by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec and upstate New York. "Part I, Destination Dakota Territory" describes Loren's multifaceted family from all of the above backgrounds and finds them as homesteaders in Minnehaha County, 'Dakota' [Dakota Territory, South Dakota]. "Part II, Norway to Minnesota" is 'all Norwegian' and finds Mavis' families all homesteading in Lac qui Parle County in west central Minnesota, some having spent months or years in Goodhue County on the eastern border of the state before reaching their final Vesterheim. This book is the second of six about these families, each containing the same core of material to set the stage for individual family presentations. Book Two provides descriptions and stories about Winge-Hegre ancestors and descendants of Mavis' families who settled in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota after beginning their lives in the Trondheim area of Norway.

                  Book Description

Many of the individuals in this study were closely related. They came from an agricultural community in Sweden dominated by a large estate. The pioneers came in search of 'free' land, and they found it in Goodhue County. Former neighbors settled close to one another. Many of the descendants are still tied to the land. The author has endeavored to trace the immigrants from cradle to grave to find out how they fared in their new homeland. But she did not stop there. Whenever possible, she continued her search among the descendants. There are extracts from official records in Sweden and in America for about 320 immigrants. Including their families, the study encompasses more than one thousand individuals.

Explore the intricate kinship within the group, name-changes, moves, occupations, farm locations, family members, and much more. The author, a native of Sweden, has studied and written about Swedish immigration history for the last 30 years. This book is a continuation of Minnesota Swedes: The Emigration From Trolle Ljungby 1855-1922, which she had published in 1996.

                      Book Description

The first in-depth exploration of the exciting field of anti-aging medicine, Reversing Human Aging examines how aging starts and progresses through the body, the methods that medical scientists are devising to stop it, and what may happen when they succeed. Researchers studying DNA have located the cellular clock that controls human aging and are now on the verge of discovering how to turn the clock back to make us younger and keep us that way. Including a provocative examination of the medical, social, and cultural implications of anti-aging techniques, Reversing Human Aging shows how we will live for two to three hundred years longer, how age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers, and heart disease will be eradicated, and how the aging process will be prevented, if not reversed--providing a startling glimpse at our future.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Move over, Mel Brooks and DeSoto.......2003-12-02

Dr Fossel is a wonderfully qualified scientist. He is able to explain complex material in a simple and clear style, replete with literary references and good humor. For this, he is to be commended. The book is a joy to read.

He explains that as the body ages, it renews itself by cell division. However, each cell division shortens the length of the proteins at the end of each chromosome (telomeres). Eventually, as the telomeres become shorter, cell division slows, and the body ages. With age come the many diseases that kill, and at a time that the body no longer has the resilience to defend itself effectively.

He also does an excellent job in explaining the body's need to maintain healthy cell division and still avoid uncontrolled cell division by cells that do not age (cancer).

Based on his view of the work of others, he feels that within 10 - 20 years, we will be able to reverse the process of human aging. Instead of a maximum lifespan of 120 years, it will be possible to live to be 2,000. Pretty exciting.

Some of us will not benefit from this wonderful possibility, as age has already caused damage to the body that cannot be reversed. However, for most people younger than 40, this delicious possibility will soon be available. Other human processes (such as menopause) will not be reversible, as they are not caused by the normal process of cell division and telomere expression.

Dr. Fossel opens a discussion on the ethical and social issues that will emanate from the possibility of reversing and retarding the process of aging. While this discussion is fairly superficial, it represents a good start to a very complex area. He provides a nice range of religious references to support the moral right to lengthen life, and briefly visits the morality of a (moderately expensive) treatment which would separate the haves from the have-nots. (So, what's new? He misses a chance to quote the old folk song "All My Trials".) He discusses the implications of an older but still vigorous population on retirement and retirement financing schemes, education and re-education and climbing the corporate ladder. All provocative and well wrought.

Unfortunately, the book suffers from frequent repetition. This may be intentional, and the author's way of hammering home important points. However, I found it somewhat tedious.

Worse, Dr. Fossel may have skipped his classes in logic and rhetoric. He seems unable to distinguish correlation from causation. Sadly, no where in this exciting and readable book does he demonstrate (or even attempt to discuss) that the shortening of telomeres is the CAUSE of aging, rather than simply a phenomenon which occurs as part of the process of aging. For his story to hang together, this part of the analysis is crucial. And, sadly, altogether absent. He might as well suggest that since aging and wrinkles occur together that the wrinkles are the cause of aging. (From my discussions with scientists at Sierra Sciences (www.sierrasci.com) I know that there are reasons to hope for a causal link, howerver the author misses the chance to develop them.

A rewrite of this provocative book would eliminate the frustrating repetition, and might allow the good Doctor a chance to demonstrate a causal relation to telomere shortening and aging. Such improvements could make this book a real thriller - and a source of much greater excitement.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, informative information pertinent to all!.......1998-08-24

Michael Fossel does an amazing job of explaining the role of telomeres (and the enzyme telomerase) in human cell division. The ability to halt cell division in cancerous cells or induce further cell division in aged cells, will be the one of the greatest scientific advancements in all of human existence. The book is well-written and realistically optimistic. The greatest news, however, lies in the fact that Geron Corportation has recently confirmed many of the theories Dr. Fossel proposes in his book. Anyone interested in a much longer and healthier life would do well to buy a copy of Reversing Human Aging.

5 out of 5 stars Thesis being confirmed in laboratory........1998-02-09

In the January 1998 issue of Science magazine the Geron Corp. describes the extension of life of human cells by the cloning process. They have produced Telomerase and extended the Chromosome Telomeres as hypothosized in Dr. Fossels book. The cloned cells have vastly outlived their uncloned brothers, which have senesced. I recommend a visit to the Geron Corp. wed page, Geron.com where extensive articles are available that confirm that Dr. Fossel's hypothesis is being verified.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of current teleomere research.......1997-12-27

This book presents a very good explanation of current teleomere research. In addition is looks ahead to the potential issues that could arise from a population with extended lifetimes. Though many researchers doubt that a single mechanism is responsible for over aging Dr. Fossel brings to light the fascinating possibilities that exists within this area. This book gives the reader a taste that only increases one's curiosity for this research.

                      Book Description

In Stop Aging Now!, Jean Carper -- winner of the 1995 Excellence in Journalism Award from the American Aging Association (the nation's leading group of scientists investigating the biomedical aspects of aging), nationally syndicated columnist and leading authority on health and nutrition -- documents how antioxidant vitamins, minerals, herbs and food chemicals are the magic youth potions humans have been seeking for centuries.

Based on exciting new scientific findings from leading institutions, Stop Aging Now! reveals the stunning truth: Much of what we call aging is not inevitable, but is needless and can be prevented and reversed to a startling degree by supplements and foods. Indeed, aging is often due to unsuspected deficiencies that can be readily corrected, and even people in their sixties, seventies and eighties can turn back the clock and recover their youth.

                      Leading scientists have found that:

Vitamins can prevent and reverse memory loss and other signs of aging.

Vitamins and minerals can rejuvenate immune functions, restoring youthful resistance to infections and cancer.

Antioxidants in foods and supplements can help prevent clogged arteries, heart attacks and general bodily deterioration.

Many unfamiliar but readily available food chemicals can prolong life and preserve your vitality.

3 out of 5 stars Good Basic Advice But Ignores the Toxic World.......2007-06-28

In STOP AGING NOW, Jean Carper uses the free radical theory to optimize health. Most of her book theorizes that taking supplements like vitamins E, B, and C, with minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, mixed with other potent antioxidants like CoQ10 will combine synergistically to reduce--but not stop--the aging process. Carper is quite right as far as she goes, but she wrote this book in 1995, and there have been considerable advances in life advancement that were either unknown or simply untested then. I cannot fault her for her lack of prescience in not knowing about other and far more potent supplements to postpone aging: DHEA, Acetyl L-Carnitine, pregnenolone, carnosine, resveratrol, lycopene, alpha lipoic acid, grapeseed extract, N-Acetyl-Cysteine, green tea extract, and curcumin to name a few. My primary objection to Carper is her passive methodolgy. If you take a dozen or so pills, you will benefit. What she leaves out is what must have been apparent even as she was writing STOP AGING NOW, namely the impact that a toxic-filled world has on human beings. Nowhere does she address the existence of toxins, and unless one acknowledges that toxins in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the chemicals with which we surround ourselves, then the overall benefit of her pill methodology is greatly reduced. There are numerous texts that address this concern. One might look at Kevin Trudeau's NATURAL CURES for a sampler. Still, for a first text on anti-aging, STOP AGING NOW is a good place to begin even if the title is seen as mostly hype and blurb.

2 out of 5 stars We Can't Stop Aging Now.......2005-06-24

Jean Carper writes with an enthusiasm and verve that I admire, and she has the zeal of a missionary. But there is no scientific evidence that we currently can stop the aging process in humans. Researchers have slowed aging in laboratory rats and mice by putting them on a near-starvation diet, and they have extended life spectacularly in worms (as much as five-fold) by manipulating certain longevity genes. But we do not have evidence that the vitamins, minerals, or herbs cited in the book can stop human aging. Researchers around the world are working on aging, and I have no doubt that they will be able to stop human aging, possibly by developing a drug that affects longevity genes in humans. If you can maneuver around the claims for stopping aging, there is much, useful information in this book on good nutrition from fruits, vegetables, proper fats, and a healthy lifestyle. These will help you live longer. Live long enough, and scientists will find a way to stop you from aging.

4 out of 5 stars WOW What a great way to STOP AGING!.......2003-02-19

Jean Carper has done a wonderful job of relating what the medical profession and researh have proven to be that elusive prescription to the fountain of youth. I quite agree with the 9th reviewer here on Amazon.com has written in her review.

I have been on such prescription for about 20 years now so I am giving testimony to Carper's prescription. Everybody on the planet earth should read and implement the directions in this book because we should learn to live up to our fullest potential and staying healthy is necessary to do that. We have lost, prematurely, many of our great brains because they abused their bodies with bad food, booze, and poor mental and physical health.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and usefull.......2002-05-31

I love this book so much. It's full of information the average person can easily put to use every day. It's written in a way that's straight-forward and easy to understand. You can just zip right through it without falling asleep. Let's face it, nobody is reading this book for the entertainment value. Jean Carper's style is right on the mark, just give the information is a simple way, never long-winded. There is something in here for everyone. Even a couch potato could read this book, basically stay a couch potato, but still get something out of this book is they follow some of the advice in here. There are no gimmicks in here, just practical information you can put to good use every day.

3 out of 5 stars A HELPFUL GUIDE ... AT A FRACTION OF THE LENGTH.......2002-03-29

Jean Carper's "Stop Aging Now!" is a mixed-bag: the useful information it imparts (which is more wittily and concisely expressed in the work of such nutritionists as Andrew Weil, for example) is deployed in such padded prose that by the time you finish reading it you are sure to have aged drastically! This book is repetitive in a way that seeks to arrogate authority by sheer volume: four hundred pages of maddening retreads and perverse recapitulations. It is as if it had been written by a nagging spinster schoolmarm for a not-very-bright ten-year-old child. That being said, it is well informed (at least)and is unlikely to harm anybody. For fifteen bucks, you could do a lot worse: a few packs of Marlboros, perhaps, or a family-size tub of Rocky Road.

From the supplier: The possibility of extending the human life span is greater as scientists were already able to increase maximum life-span in two species. However, such a development will present social, economic and cultural changes whose consequences cannot be scientifically predicted.

                                  Book Description

Oil-related activities damage tropical rainforests, but this is just one side of a complicated story.
This book, a study of oil producing countries, looks at the linkages between macroeconomic trends and how policies affect the environment. In a balanced and comprehensive review, Sven Wunder, shows that oil revenues can indirectly come to protect tropical rainforests using case studies based on eight countries including Cameroon, Ecuador, Gabon, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela.
This topical, accessible and readable book has immediate and direct implications for policy formulation that help decide what can be done to diminish deforestation without jeopardizing economic growth. This book needs to be read not only by students and academics involved in environmental economics, but also by all those involved in policymaking.
