Book Description

A People's Army documents the many distinctions between British regulars and Massachusetts provincial troops during the Seven Years' War. Originally published by UNC Press in 1984, the book was the first investigation of colonial military life to give equal attention to official records and to the diaries and other writings of the common soldier. The provincials' own accounts of their experiences in the campaign amplify statistical profiles that define the men, both as civilians and as soldiers. These writings reveal in intimate detail their misadventures, the drudgery of soldiering, the imminence of death, and the providential world view that helped reconcile them to their condition and to the war.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly insightful.......2006-05-17

Though limited to the provincial soldiers of Massachusetts, this book provides ample insights to the colonial soldiers of the French and Indian war and will serve the reader well for any course of study on the subject.

Most informative. Easy to read. A good book to have for those interested in Colonial American History or just the French and Indian Conflict.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Fred Anderson.......2004-05-17

This book was a very good portrayal of the New England soldier during the French & Indian War.One got to see what motivated the soldiers of this time period and the one-time opportunity that this war represented for many of them.I recommend Anderson's work.

4 out of 5 stars Great reading !.......2001-07-18

Fred Anderson did a marvelous job with this book..... it's a "big" book but the chapters are short and to the point......well written..... Fred puts in "Tid-a-bits" of information that you will not find in ordinary history books and tid-a-bits are what makes history interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic account of Pre-Revolutionary American Military.......1999-02-04

Anderson gives a detailed account of the conditions and day to day activities of the provincial regiments in the Seven Year's War. Using stastics and detailed diaries from the participants, Anderson shows the effects of the war on both the local economies and personal lives of the men who, thirteen years later, would take up arms against Britian in the War of Independence.

    Book Description

This whimsically illustrated pop-up book introduces younger children to a very important subject: science. Eleven imaginative, full-color pop-up spreads tell kids the story of how all physical reality came into existence, starting at the beginning of time with what scientists call the Big Bang—a cosmic explosion that got the universe started. Illustrations and easy text that follows portray the formation of the solar system and the gradual changes on the planet Earth that made it hospitable to life forms. Succeeding illustrations show the evolution of sea creatures, dinosaurs, and other prehistoric animals, culminating with the origin and development of human beings. Kids will be fascinated by the ingenious pop-up illustrations as they discover the story of literally everything that exists.

The universe was created in the first Big Bang, but according to Philip Dauber and Richard Muller that alone couldn't have been sufficient to set the stage for life on Earth today. Two more big bangs were needed: one in the form of a supernova that seeded the solar system with heavy elements; the second a devastating asteroid or comet impact 65 million years ago that exterminated the dinosaurs and permitted the evolution of mammals and ultimately humans. The Three Big Bangs describes the science behind each of these events in a colorful manner. It provides an easily accessible survey of key theories in cosmology, but readers more familiar with these principles may yearn for greater detail and rigor. Still, as an overview of three classes of cosmological cataclysms and their role in shaping the world as we know it, The Three Big Bangs succeeds.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent popular science about evolution of the universe........1996-12-19

The authors' three big bangs are 1) THE Big Bang thought to have given birth to the known universe, 2) the later explosions of supernovas which produced the heavy elements not originally present in the early universe, which was dominated by the light elements hydrogen and helium, and 3) the crash of a comet or asteroid near the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago, which destroyed the dinosaurs and gave fresh opportunities to mammals and, eventually, to us humans. For the authors, these diverse events are linked because they have each played an enormous role in determining the nature of the world we now live in. These three big bangs give us a strong sense of physical evolution, comparable to the modern view of biological evolution. This is a new perception. When I was a child in the 1940's I read everything about popular astronomy I could get my hands on. The view I got at the time was of a completely static universe, in which nothing much ever happened. The universe was magnificent and awesome but certainly not dynamic. Now the universe is a place of explosive evolution and is vastly more magnificent and awesome. "The Three Big Bangs" tells this story well. This is a book that openly panders to our fascination with violence, but in a way that is socially acceptable!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Clear and Simple Writing of a Complex Subject.......2005-08-10

The surprising thing to me about this book is that only a very few years ago the material here was the subject of only the deepest thinkers in physics and cosmology. This is material that is more advanced than what I was taught in college. Now this material is produced in a form suitable for a young audience.

The wording, the explanations, the selection of what to present in this small book is excellent. It presents todays standard model of cosmology, that is, the most recent theories of how the universe was formed from the big bang theory itself to the people who helped to develop the theories.

I do not know the background of the author, but I have rarely seen such simple and clear explanations of such a complex subject. Nor do I know the age level for which this book was intended, but I know a lot of adults that would learn something from it.

This book critically explores answers to the big question, What produced our universe around fifteen billion years ago in a Big Bang? It critiques contemporary atheistic cosmologies, including Steady State, Oscillationism, Big Fizz, Big Divide, and Big Accident, that affirm the eternity and self-sufficiency of the universe without God. This study defends and revises Process Theology and arguments for God's existence from the universe's life-supporting order and contingent existence.

What do we know about the origins of the Universe, and more important, how do we know it? In a small, easy-to-read package, this book introduces you to all of the important ideas about the Big Bang and its consequences. Craig Hogan explains what happened in the early days of the universe, why we think it's expanding (and how the expansion can look the same from everyplace at once), different ways the universe could end, and the meaning of such terms as "cosmic inflation," "cosmic background radiation," and "dark matter." For everyone who has always wondered just what the cosmologists are talking about but could never find the basics explained clearly and simply, this is the book to read.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Big overview for a little book.......2000-11-27

Easy to read but fairly complete overview of the Big Bang.

3 out of 5 stars Fine little book.......1999-12-25

Well worth the money. More precise explanations could have been used in the definition of "coupling" between matter and energy. Hadrons are not defined.Quantum fluctuations are glossed over but then, I have never seen them satisfactorily explained in any popular book. Also, why not say that the number of primeval neutrons is less than that of protons because the former are unstable and decay? A good book with few flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Coherent, understandable explanations of big-bang-cosmology.......1999-08-17

An excellent book for readers with basic knowledge and interest in physics and "physical thinking". It gives a complete, understandable picture of cosmic evolution and the theories which (try to) describe it, and it took away my idea of cosmology as some kind of mysterious physics.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative, and manageable........1999-04-09

I'm not a physicist but do read much of this "popular" science. I found this book readable and informative. The last full chapter on the inflationary universe (repulsive gravity) is particularly fascinating.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed at all........1999-03-24

While this book contains a plothora of information, it is presented in a terrible manner. Any reader who is not up-to-par on his/her quantum physics will be completely lost. I do howver have to give credit for some excellent graphs/illustrations. They are very informative.

Jan and her best friend Sarah have visions of their home-made volcano erupting wildly in class, lava running down its sides as their classmates stare in awe.

They want to be the only Grade Three kids at the Science Fair, and their teacher Mrs. Nelson says they can go. But in her next breath she says, "just don't try the baking-soda-and-vinegar-volcano." They're devastated, but decide to look for another project anyway. Finding a safe Science Fair exhibit proves harder than they thought, but with the help of a box full of garbage and thousands of worms, they find an explosive solution.

Jan's Big Bang is a story about two extremely resourceful girls and the rewards they gain for persevering.

Few writers make the effort to present science as fun and interesting to young children. But Jacqui Bailey manages to present scientific information in a fun, entertaining way. This series has been an excellent introduction to the theories of evolution and the big bang.

I highly recommend it for children who express an interest in science. Even as young as 5 or 6, they can understand some of the basic concepts. We have been so thankful that this series was available when our children began asking questions about the beginning of time.
