A Glorius Page..........2006-06-15
There's not much doubt about the exhaustive detail of this book. It's about as close as you are going to get to a blow by blow account of the most important battle in US Navy history. The authors recount virtually every movement that any ship, squadron, or commander made in those 3 crucial days. Although the detail is minute, I couldn't put it down. The battle was apparently, a continuous stream of action.
This book is really for the dedicated historian and hardcore history buff. It isn't really intended to be a good read, but it sure was for me. The writing style is easy and flowing, not as dry and dusty as you would expect from a history book.
The story really focuses on the men. It is full of pictures of the flyers, commanders and squadrons. There are only a couple small weak points. One is the poor quality of the printed pictures. This is not an expensive book, so it is printed on medium quality paper. Photos don't turn out very clear on this kind of paper. Several captions describe details in the photo that I can't for the life of me see. Still the picture collection here is huge. It was especially touchng to look at the faces of these great heroes. They look like ordinary guys. I guess they were. It impresses me that ordinary guys are capable of rising to such high levels of dedication and valor.
The other problem is the lack of good maps. There are only 6, and they aren't very high quality. The 3 battle maps are given on only 2 pages, and contain too much information to make much sense. I would have prefered more larger maps showing more specific phases of the battle. I tracked down some better maps on the internet, but the data in this text could be used to produce many more detailed maps.
The book starts witb an interesting brief history of Midway atol, itself. Such an important place, and yet it is just a couple of tiny piles of sand literally in the middle of nowhere.
Altogether, I can highly recommend this book if you want a lot of detail in an easy-reading style.
Best book I've read about Midway........2006-03-25
Simply fantastic. I've read many books about this topic but this is the best. No theatrics, just the facts presented in a very readable format. Great work.
A Glorious Page in Our History: The Battle of Midway, 4-6 June, 1942.......2006-02-28
This is one of the most complete accounts of the battle that I have read. It was an excelent book
Battle of Midway researchers: start here........2005-02-25
. This is THE definitive work on the Battle of Midway. It accurately provides the detail that most of the others omit or get wrong, and it corrects all of the popular myths about the battle that some of the others perpetuate, i.e. the controversial flight of the USS Hornet's air group on the morning of 4 June 1942, and the "Midway is short of water" ruse pulled off by the signal intelligence wizards at Pearl Harbor.
. You have to be very familiar with the events and personnel involved in the battle to find even a minor flaw in this book. This reviewer knows of only two (in the 4th printing, March '98); one photo caption cites the wrong PBY squadron and another has the wrong names for an SBD aircrew. Beyond that sort of miniscule nitpicking that very few would notice, "A Glorious Page" can be relied upon as meticulously thorough and accurate to a level that no other volume on the Battle of Midway approaches.
. If you are researching the battle, start here. And if you can only afford one book on the Battle of Midway, this is the one you want. (Reviewed by R. W. Russell, Battle of Midway Roundtable, www.midway42.org)
A Glorious Book.......2000-06-20
This book is the result of a cooperative effort by a number of noted experts in the field of naval history. It provides the latest known facts regarding tactical details, numerous pertinent photos and previously unpublished (to my knowledge) biographical info about many heros of the battle. Every student of the war in the Pacific needs this book.

Book Description
Exploring the Northern Tradition is an overview of the modern reconstruction of the ancient religion of the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples. This religion, called Heathenry, is one of the fastest growing polytheistic religious movements in the United States today with over forty thousand adherents. This book provides a thorough guide to the cosmology, values, ethics, and rituals practiced by modern Heathens.
Readers will have the opportunity to explore the sacred stories of the various Heathen Gods like Odin, Frigga, Freya, and Thor and will be granted a look into the devotional practices of modern votaries. The most common devotional rite: the faining or blót is examined in rich detail with examples given for personal use. Additionally, readers are introduced to the concept of wyrd or fate, so integral to the Heathen worldview.
Unlike many books on Heathenry, Exploring the Northern Tradition is not denomination specific, nor does it seek to overwhelm the reader with unfamiliar Anglo-Saxon or Norse terminology. For those new to Heathenry, Pagans who wish to learn more about the Norse Deities, or those simply interested in learning about this unique religion, this book is the perfect introduction.

A Solid Introduction to Heathenry.......2007-08-19
I liked this book because the author really made an effort to present as many aspects of modern heathenry as possible. She touched on many of the larger modern movements from Theodish to Folkish to Universalist, and while she never got into much depth on them, there was a good amount of basic information. I enjoyed the straightforward approach to ritual structure, and the chapters dealing with blot, faining, and sumbel. While their is quite a bit of personal gnosis in the book I thought the author was clear about where fact ended and gnosis began and that it helped give a "personal" feel to the work. A great book to start out with, or to lend to those curious about heathenry.
Not a bad introduction, If a bit FBL (Fluffy Bunny Love)........2007-05-27
Exploring the Northern Tradition, Galina Krasskova
This is a good introduction to, as the title states, the northern tradition. It gives a basic breakdown of several modern Norse schools of thought. While several reviewers criticized the lack of documentation I found the footnotes to be more than adequate for this "general overview" type of work. I did think that the glossary should have been a little more in-depth. After all this is an introductory book and the target audience generally has little or no idea what your talking about. The bibliography and suggested reading sections were quite good for the beginner. I did like the way the book was presented. So many Heathen/Asatru/Lore/Saga's etc works fall into the ridiculously cartoonish formats, ("The Rites of Odin" comes to mind) or the massive scholarly & overwhelming tombs of the ancients. EtNT's format was nonintimidating but respectful.
Many readers with experience in Heathenry will immediately note a slight to heavy, (depending on your view), WICCAN flavor to the work. This I attribute to the authors former association with that group. While I do not agree with some of her "insights" into Heathenism I will agree to disagree. All & all a good starting point and easy read for the beginner.
Beginner's Guide to Heathenry.......2007-03-16
I was looking more for an impartial study of the ancient practices of the Northern Europeans, and so was mildly disappointed to discover that it was in fact a beginner's guide to modern Heathenry. However, the book still contains a good deal of invaluble information, just ordered in a mannor I was not expecting.
Wonderful intro book to Heathenry.......2007-03-14
Krasskova's book is by far one of the best introduction to Heathenry books on the market today. Her style is easy to read and understand, but at the same time is well researched and informative. She draws on a lot of her own UPG in writing this book, which might be the only drawback if you're one of those people who don't put a lot of stock in UPG, but she makes up for it by drawing on sources from the Lore as well. It's the book I recommend to anyone interested in Heathenry.
A Very Inspired Book!.......2007-02-28
This book is easy to read and highly informative. Krasskova delves into the beliefs, theogony, gods, morals, and devotional practices of Northern European Heathenry with a steady voice and an even tone. She explains so many aspects from American religious community to the Gods themselves. Its collectively an excellent primer for Heathen newbies, a guide for those curious about Heathenry, and an excellent reference guide for those practicing the faith. Her work is impeccably researched, intelligently written, highly informative, and truly a pleasure to read.

Rites and Religions of the Anglo-Saxons, a Heathen's Review.......2004-03-11
This particular book on Anglo-Saxon Heathenism is unique to my knowledge in that it extends its subject matter to all the religions known to have been practiced by the Anglo-Saxons, and thus discusses their practice of Catholic Christianity as well. It sets the stage for the arrival in Britain of the peoples who became the Anglo-Saxons by pointing out that Celtic and Greco-Roman Paganism, as well as Christianity (both the form which due mostly to political patronage eventually became the "catholic" i.e. "universal" form and various "heresies") predated in Britain the Germanic Heathenism brought in by the Anglo-Saxons.
In the first chapter, the use of Scandinavian sources to elucidate the fragmentary remains of Anglo-Saxon Heathenism is taken for granted. Tacitus' Germania is also consulted. As in all books of this sort, the role of place-names in determining which Gods the early English worshipped receives due attention. More information can be extracted from the writings of the venerable Bede and other Old English authors. Quotes from these are supplied both in the original Old English and in translation. English runic inscriptions and art and artifacts hinting at Heathen rites and beliefs are also important sources of information.
The second chapter, "Everyday life in Pagan times," looks at both literary remnants and the archaeological record. The results of the excavation of a likely Heathen temple at Yeavering in Northumberland are described. A brief exposition of the possible religious/cultural significance of the individual Runes of the Anglo-Saxon Futhork adds to the value of this book for the modern Heathen reader.
The third chapter discusses cremation and inhumation burials, mostly of the common folk. The fourth chapter describes ship burials, the probable howe of King Rædwald at Sutton Hoo being of course the best known. This custom was likely of Scandinavian, specifically Swedish derivation and was reserved for the upper tiers of society.
The remaining chapters deal with Christianity among the Anglo-Saxons but still hold much interest for the Heathen reader. Happily, the British/Welsh were quite content to leave the English in their Heathenism as an easy way, from their jaundiced perspective, to consign their hereditary enemies to "hell." They only got in on the burgeoning missionary enterprise after the Italians under St. Augustine began the whole conversion process. This entire sad story is told in more detail than you'll probably want to read. However, many interesting tidbits of information come to light in the process. For instance, the Catholic Christianity of that time was not all that much more homogenous than Heathenry was!
Heathenism enjoyed a brief and initially promising renaissance when Vikings settled in England, but was in steep decline by the Norman conquest of 1066, which ended the Anglo-Saxon period. One likely reason for its failure was that, unlike in the Harry Harrison alternative history trilogy beloved of many Heathens, the Vikings failed (or more likely never even tried) to interest the native English in their religion. A Benedictine-led renewal of Christian religious life, patronized enthusiastically by the last Anglo-Saxon kings, was instrumental in the extirpation of Heathenism. On that sad note, Rites and Religions of the Anglo-Saxons draws to a close. This is just as well from a Heathen viewpoint as the centuries which follow hold little of religious interest to us.
The England which would emerge at the end of Norman rule, I should elaborate, would be a far different place both culturally and linguistically. There would be nothing "Heathen" left there besides the names of a relative handful of places, most already worn down to the point of unintelligibility, the days of the week, and some originally Heathen folklore and customs, many of which would be suppressed by the Puritans following the establishment of the Protestant Reformation in that nation.
While it is sometimes lacking in depth and detail, I nevertheless recommend this book as a good general overview and introduction to its subject. Rites and Religions of the Anglo-Saxons was originally copyrighted in 1981, while the edition I purchased came out in 1996. Although this work is out of print, there were a couple of copies listed on amazon.com at a reasonable price if you cannot obtain it via interlibrary loan.

Book Description
Pre-Conquest attitudes towards the dying and the dead have major implications for every aspect of culture, society and religion of the Anglo-Saxon period; but death-bed and funerary practices have been comparatively and unjustly neglected by historical scholarship. In her wide-ranging analysis, Dr Thompson examines such practices in the context of confessional and penitential literature, wills, poetry, chronicles and homilies, to show that complex and ambiguous ideas about death were current at all levels of Anglo-Saxon society. Her study also takes in grave monuments, showing in particular how the Anglo-Scandinavian sculpture of the ninth to the eleventh centuries may indicate not only the status, but also the religious and cultural alignment of those who commissioned and made them. VICTORIA THOMPSON undertook her postgraduate work in English and Medieval Studies at the University of York and currently lectures in medieval history for New York University's London Program.

Book Description
`His work demonstrates the importance of these neglected sources for our understanding of the late Old English church.' HISTORYAn important book of immense erudition. It brings into the open some major issues of Late Anglo-Saxon history, and gives a thorough overview of the detailed source material. When such outstanding learning is being used, through intuitive perception, to bear on the wider issues such as popular devotion and the reception of the monastic reform in England, and bold conclusions are bing drawn from such minutely detailed studies, there is no doubt that David Dumville's contribution in this area of study becomes invaluable. The sources for the liturgy of late Anglo-Saxon England have a distinctive shape. Very substantial survival has given us the possibility of understanding change and perceiving significant continuity, as well as identifying local preferences and peculiarities. One major category of evidence is provided by a corpus of more than twenty kalendars: some of these (and particularly those which have been associated with Glastonbury Abbey) are subjected to close examination here, the process contributing both negatively and positively to the history of ecclesiastical renewal in the 10th century. Another significant body of manuscripts comprises books for episcopal use, especially pontificals: these are examined here as a group, and their associations with specific prelates and churches considered. All these investigations tend to suggest the centrality of the church of Canterbury in the surviving testimony and presumptively therefore in the history of late Anglo-Saxon christianity. Historians' study of English liturgy in this period has heretofore concentrated on the development of coronation-rites: by pursuing palaeographical and textual enquiries, the author has sought to make other divisions of the subject respond to historical questioning. Dr DAVID N. DUMVILLEis Reader in the Early Mediaeval History and Culture of the British Isles at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Girton College.

Book Description
Thermoelastic stress analysis is a relatively new technique for experimental estimation of stresses produced by the application of dynamic loading to a structure. It can provide valuable corroboration of theoretical results produced by finite-element and other computer-aided techniques, which often give rise to considerable inaccuracies if not used with care. The thermoelastic method therefore has an essential role to play in stress analysis. This book is a comprehensive treatment of the subject by the world's leading authorities. Both theoretical and practical considerations are covered - from testing to data processing and the factors that may influence results. Seven of the nine chapters of the book are based upon research using a commercial system (SPATE). Of great interest to professional engineers, stress analysts and designers, as well as to graduate students in related engineering disciplines. It is accessible to all readers conversant with the basic principles of mechanical engineering and stress analysis.

Book Description
This book describes the analytical formulation and numerical implementation of the three-dimensional dual boundary element method (DBEM) for the thermoelastic analysis of mixed-mode crack problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics. The DBEM overcomes the problem of the singular matrix that is inherent to crack modelling by incorporating two pairs of independent boundary integral equations, namely the temperature and displacement, and the flux and traction equations. One pair is applied on one crack face and the other pair to the opposite one. The temperature and displacement equations are applied on non-crack boundaries.
