Book Description
Understanding how business is likely to evolve in the coming years is itself a multi-million dollar business. Plenty of gurus, academics and snake-oil salesmen will tell you all about the future — for a price. What all of these experts often overlook is that the future is already here. Chances are, the products and services we will buy and sell tomorrow are available — to a very limited clientele — at a top-secret research institute near you.
Throughout human history war and the threat of war have driven innovation and accelerated the uptake of new technology — from the nomadic warriors who introduced the stirrup and the kebab to the world, to the British Navy’s funding of Marconi’s new-fangled radio. And since 1945 the relationship between military needs and modern business has grown ever closer, especially in the United States. David Hambling traces the history of this relationship in the modern era and shows how precision eye surgery emerged out of the military quest for a ‘death ray,’ how transistors and silicon chips first helped build better bombs, and exactly why the 747 has such a distinctive shape.

Book Description
The West Transformed is a comprehensive, mainstream introductory Western Civilization or European History textbook. It covers a variety of fields of history including social history, but stresses traditional topics and a strong narrative. The development of civilization in the West is presented as a series of cultural, technological, social, and political transformations. A strong unifying theme focuses on the tensions between continuity and change in human affairs.

Very good update on reknown textbook by Burns but..........2006-09-07
They have been doing very good job of updating ever since Burns didn't involve hinself directly in recent editions. Adding, updating the content yet maintaining the unique tone of Burns writing.
But with 14th edition, they changed the layout to two-column page layout. And I absolutley hate two-column page in any textbook or any book for that matter.
great book- worthy tome of knowledge.......2001-01-16
This book, while I realise its a text book, has given me great insight into the latter portion of western culture. This book provides more verifiable references then any other book of this type I've read. Quality color pictures and easily followed footnotes, provides a respectable index and is very easily understood and appreciated.

The West: Encounters & Transformations takes a new approach to telling the story of Western Civilization. Rather than looking at Western Civilization only as the history of Europe from ancient times to the present, this groundbreaking book examines the changing nature of the West–how the definition of the West has evolved and transformed throughout history.
The text presents a balanced treatment of political, social, religious, and cultural history and emphasizes the ever-shifting boundaries of the geographic and cultural realm of the West.

Western Civilization book.......2005-10-01
This book arrived in fair condition. It arrived on time as promised. It was not bad for $7.00
Horrible textbook........2005-07-11
This has to be the worst textbook I have ever used in my life. Terms are not in bold, there are no review questions, and the authors do not provide footnotes with there sources. The book is impossible to Outline or even take notes on since it follows no coherent structure. Sometimes it will talk about the consequences of things, before it discuss's there causes. It also has numerous historical mistakes. Our teacher points them out every class, but some even I cna see on my own.
The book filled with typos. It says that nationalism challenged neo-platonism. I think it means nominalism. Please do not use this as a main textbook for the course. You students will not do well.
Good historical reference material.......2004-06-12
There is good reason for this book being in it's fourteenth edition; it is comprehensive, balanced ,concise not overly laborious reading and a flat out good history book. I have a previous edition that I used to supplement teaching my students with and continue to use when helping my high school age son. The contributors are brainiacs, we're talking experts in their fields too. A couple of case in points, Lerner received his PH. D. from Princeton and is a professor who has authored several books. Meacham did his undergraduate work at Yale before doing his graduate work at Cambridge and Harvard. The book takes blocks of time like the Age of Absolutism, Intellectual Revolutions of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, The French Revolution and all the major developments of Western Civilization .There is just enough information to go in depth but not feel like you are overburdened with data. The modern world is also explored and contemporary Western Civilizations. There are aslo many colorful maps, pictures and illustrations to supplement the writing to enhance thelearning experience. A very helpful feature is subject titles along the sides of the paragraphs that correspond to the detailed information. This is helpful when you are seeking specific information on a subject and do not want to read pages and pages of information to find your facts. I would highly recommend this book to any student of history or teacher of advanced middle school or high school courses on world history.

Book Description
The fourth edition of this uniquely comprehensive two-volume anthology has been expanded to connect over a thousand important books, essays, and artistic works with events in American and European intellectual, cultural, and political history. After extensive consultation with instructors who assign these volumes to students, the editors have revised this edition to include more discussions of religion, psychology, social theory, gender, ethnicity, and the role of the United States in the world. Ranging chronologically from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 to the present, The American Intellectual Tradition, 4/e, is invaluable for courses in intellectual history and an excellent supplement for classes in American history, American studies, and American literature. Volume I now offers new selections from Jonathan Edwards, "Brutus," Judith Sargent Murray, William Ellery Channing, Nathaniel William Taylor, Charles Grandison Finney, William Lloyd Garrison, Orestes Brownson, Martin Delany and Margaret Fuller; and includes writings of John Winthrop, John Cotton, Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, Cotton Mather, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, Sarah Grimke, George Bancroft, Catharine Beecher, Henry C. Carey, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Margaret Fuller, Henry David Thoreau, Horace Bushnell, Herman Melville, John C. Calhoun, Louisa McCord, George Fitzhugh, Frederick Douglass, and Abraham Lincoln.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Compendium of American Thought.......2003-01-01
This volume by Hollinger and Capper is the first of two in their ambitious goal to "round up" and compile a representative sampling of documents in American Intellectual History. They succeed brilliantly.
Volume I logically starts with the Pilgrims and ends with the Civil War and is divided neatly into component chapters with contributions from John Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, Cotton Mather, Jonathan Edwards ("Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is just breathtaking...), Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams (the founding fathers section), on through Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson (Transcendentalism), to Margaret Fuller and Elizabeth Palmer Peabody to John C. Calhoun, George Fitzhugh, Martin Delaney, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
The editors provide a small biographical sketch of each author that precedes the selection and the selections track a wide range of issues including race relations, relations between the North and the South, the enfranchisement of women, American exceptionalism (Winthrop's "City on a Hill"), the formation of the United States, transcendentalism (the seedling for America's first original philosophy, Pragmatism). These issues are picked up later and expanded (or concluded) in Volume II of the work.
An Excellent Compendium of American Thought.......2003-01-01
Volume II of Hollinger and Capper's work is as excellent as the first.
Volume II contains contributions from American writers such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan Sontag, Malcolm X, Rienhold Niebuhr, Noam Chomsky, John Crowe Ransom, Betty Friedan, John Dewey, W.E.B. DuBois, H.L. Mencken, Jane Addams, Woodrow Wilson, Samuel Huntington, etc.
Volume II traces the developments of race relations in America, the advancement of minorities and women in America, American foreign relations, insight into the state of the South after the Civil War, the effect of transportation revolutions on interstate travel as well as traces the development of Pragmatism, America's contribution to the world of Philosophy from Charles Sanders Peirce to William James to Thomas Kuhn to Richard Rorty.
Simply put, the topical treatment of this work is first rate and the collection of these various works is a creditable contribution to the field of American Intellectual History.

Awesome Book Which Exposes Those in Big Business that Funded, Created, and Crafted Environmentalism and Why.......2006-08-24
This is a fantastic book; it easily receives 5 stars for the superb content and analysis. Dr. Gibson is simply a guy with terrific work who does not receive the attention he should. I highly recommend reading Gibson's "Battling Wall Street: The Kennedy Presidency" first that way you can become familiar with Gibson's work.
This book goes into great detail about the money that created the environmental movement and why. Environmentalists may not like this book; if you are an environmentalist, read with an open mind. Dr. Gibson shows how big oil and other so called opponents of environmentalism actually created and fund the movement in the past and today. Gibson demonstrates the stranglehold these individuals and companies still control and manipulate the movement. Gibson does not all mention anything about pollution as good or bad. He makes very brief mention (less than a page) of global warming and how the scientific community is in disagreement on the issue.
Gibson demonstrates that the individuals and companies who fund the movement have specific economic and ideological goals. One of the core messages behind the environmental movement is to stop the progress of technology. Technology is the largest economic force of redistribution of power and wealth in society. Many economist and social scientist acknowledge this reality. This is one of the many factors Gibson demonstrates as to explain why big business pushes the environmental movement.
The book emphasizes the Rockefeller and Ford connections to the environmental movement, as well as the many extreme environmentalists who believe that the world's population should be reduced by 80% and call for a return back to oppressive and intense labor. The book offers a terrific explanation as to why the environmental movement is against religions such as Christianity.
Gibson investigates the origins of Earth Day and how it was originally perceived as a corporate buyout and propaganda model. If you are environmentalist and consider yourself to dislike oil companies, ford corporation, and other seemingly destructive companies to the environment; then prepared to have your mind blown as you find out these are the very companies that control, created, fund, and shape the entire environmental movement. If you end up reading this book and like it or want to know more about the power groups involved in the book I recommend you to read both "Battling Wall Street" and "Communication Power and Media" by Donald Gibson.
Overall this is a truly fantastic book, the information presented is hard to come by, well researched, and very honest.
