From the rise of Greece to the fall of Rome, this superbly illustrated volume is a wonderful account of the warriors and battles that dominated Europe and the Near East for more than 1,000 years. The story begins at Troy, drawing upon Homeric legend and modern archaeological evidence. It continues through Greece's Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, Rome's Punic Wars, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and the barbarian invasions. Although John Warry's text is worth reading, the color drawings of uniforms, equipment, weapons, warships, siege engines, and more are the real highlight and make the chronicle extremely accessible. Warfare in the Classical World will excite both readers who have a mature interest in the period and, although it's not a kids' book, children becoming acquainted with ancient history for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to ancient warfare.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent introduction to ancient warfare. It is lavishly illustrated, and provides excellent diagrams to support some of the concepts such as how a phalanx of Greek infantry manoevered and then moved into combat. The book covers the technology of the times, but also looks at tactics and gives an overview of the politics that lead to the various conflicts. I would higly recommend this book for beginners in the field of ancient warfare such as myself. My only reservation, is that while the primarary authorities are extensively referenced in the text, I would have liked to see a bibliography (although the glossary is great too!) Highly recommended for beginners or those with a general interest in the topic.
Great Read.......2007-03-29
Loved the book. The sketches and battle tactics illustrated made them come alive for me. Gave me a much better insight into the whole thing. And the delivery was fast, even with free shipping.
The Best Resource Available on Ancient Warfare.......2007-02-09
As I researched the equipment and modes of Greek warfare while writing the historical novel "Maccabee," I consulted numerous excellent sources, but John Warry's book was without a doubt the best. It became my virtual bible for the staging of the battle sequences between the Jews in the Maccabean Revolt and their Syrian enemies who employed the Greek methods that had worked so well for Alexander the Great. Warry's explanations of military techniques in their historical context as well as the wealth of illustrations makes this a valuable resource for anyone interested in ancient warfare.
Must have if you are interested in ancient wars.......2006-12-08
I just got this for my son Shawn and I ended up reading it first. I am sure during this X'Mas both of us will want to fight for the book. The pictures and the drawings are of the highest qualities. I love the descriptions of major wars. I just wish that the author has given it more explanation of the drawings for the major battles like adding more legends. Also, it is kind of hard to read/understand the numbers and types of soldiers for both sides on the battlefield. But all in all, this is a great book that I suspect I will read and re-read many times.
All you wanted to know about Greek and Roman Military!.......2006-03-19
This volume contains details of battles, of famous strategic details that are hard to find in other books. There are pages on the uniforms and weaponry along with the organization of the entire armies of the times.
Great Book for the Military Buffs.

Without the third season of MTV's The Real World, set in San Francisco, Pedro Zamora would have lived and died quietly, a Cuban immigrant who became an AIDS educator after his HIV diagnosis at the age of 17. But in 1993, he and seven others were selected for the cast of The Real World, and Pedro's battle with AIDS, his irrepressible good nature, his love affair with Sean Sasser, and his growing friendship with his housemates would become public knowledge. When Pedro succumbed to complications of AIDS in November 1994, news of his death was carried on every major network and made international headlines. Thousands of letters arrived from around the world. Even President Clinton applauded Pedro's bravery in speaking out to young people about AIDS prevention and self-esteem. Judd Winick, a struggling cartoonist, had also been chosen for that season of The Real World, and became Pedro's roommate and close friend. His cartoon memoir tells the story of their friendship and serves as a vivid memorial to a bright-eyed and gifted man who made more of his 22 years of life than most of us could make of 80. --Regina Marler
Book Description
"You are eighteen years old. You get up in front of a thousand people--your classmates, your friends, basically the people who make up your entire existence--and announce, 'I'm HIV positive.'"Told entirely in sequential art, here is the story of the life-changing friendship between the author, a cartoonist from Long Island, and Pedro Zamora, an HIV-positive AIDS activist, which was filmed day by day on MTV's Real World San Francisco. As a speaker and educator, a guest on many talk shows (including Oprah), and when his tragic death received front-page coverage in the press, Pedro taught a generation that AIDS was not a punishment for moral defects or a mere killer that reduced humans to wraiths. Rather, he showed how those afflicted with the disease could live and love nobly with intelligence, humor and great humanity. Judd Winick's compelling memoir allows each of us to experience the vitally important message Pedro brought us.Inspiring, moving, informative, and instantly accessible, Pedro and Me could become one of the books that defines a generation.

funny-sad-moving.......2007-09-09
i have been a fan of the real world show ever sense the first one but it
wasn't until the real world:san francisco show that i became a true fan.
when i first saw pedro i thought there is a interesting person, it wasn't
until i saw the show that i saw just how interesting he was. i heard of hiv/aids and i read about it but i never understood what it was until pedro came along. i use to believe what every one else believed that hiv/aids was catchable, that you could get it just by touching someone but
then pedro came along and taught me and the world that it's not true.
pedro became not just a person i saw on the tv but a friend, a brother,
i felt like he was apart of my family and i still do. i am so glad judd
wrote this book, now every one who didn't watch the real world san francisco show will know what a great and loving person pedro was. i wish
i got to meet him because there is so many things i want to say to him like thank you, thank you pedro for teaching me that i shouldn't be afraid
of the person who has hiv/aids i should be loving and kinder to the person
who has this disease because that person could be a friend of mine or one
of my brothers or sisters or it could be me.
"Pedro and Me" is poignant and powerful........2007-03-19
Pedro and Me is a graphic novel that describes the friendship between two men who became friends while they were roommates on the MTV show The Real World. The author of Pedro and Me, Judd Winick, was a struggling cartoonist and was one of the roommates. Winick's friend and roommate, Pedro Zamora, was HIV positive and although only in his 20's, was a nationally known AIDS activist. Zamora died of AIDS within months after the taping of the show was completed.
In the summer of 1994, my husband and I had a college student, Susan, living with us. She was an intern working in the area, and we had offered our guest room to her for the summer. She became a part of our family; one of her favorite television shows was MTV's The Real World. Although my husband and I had not planned to watch the program, its compelling storyline of a young AIDS activist living with a group of strangers in downtown San Francisco drew us in, and we watched every episode. (Honestly, we felt a little silly watching a show designed for the "20-something" demographic.)
Having watched the television show, however, I was curious to see how Winick would bring his experiences to the graphic novel format. As a gifted artist and writer, Winick focuses briefly on what viewers saw "on-camera." Instead, he allows us to see beyond the show to the real friendship between the two men. His book, similar to Art Spiegelman's Maus I and Maus II, examines the human condition, and explores the subject of death with a sensitivity one finds in the best works of literature. When Zamora dies, readers grieve for the young man who had so much to offer the world. Readers grieve for Winick, too, who had the privilege of becoming Zamora's friend, only to lose him to AIDS within months of the beginning of that friendship.
Far from being "just a comic book," Pedro and Me is poignant and powerful and deserves to be on library and media center shelves across the country. Educating about AIDS without preaching, Winick has written and illustrated a masterful work of literature. Although some people have criticized Winick for being an "opportunist" and a "publicity hound," I see nothing of the sort. I believe Pedro and Me is a heartfelt tribute to a friend who changed Winick's life forever. This beautiful book touches the heart. I have recommended it to my husband and to my teenage sons; as a school library media specialist, I will recommend it to my young adult students.
A truly touching portrait..........2006-10-16
Judd Winick's "Pedro and Me" does what the most highly regarded graphic novels do-it captures a particular moment in time and depicts the human condition like the best in literature and film do, much like art spiegelman's acclaimed "Maus," another highly regarded story told in sequential art.
Through Winick's telling of the friendship between he and Pedro Zamora, we are able to see beyond what was depicted on camera during the season of MTV's "The Real World" where they met and became friends. Winick focuses minimal time on showing what we saw during the show's run and includes depictions of some of the other housemates, but briefly. This is not a retelling of what happened during that "Real World" season--if you want that, then buy the DVD's. Instead, the building friendship and cameraderie between Winick and Zamora is what is offered here. The loss of Zamora is seen as all the more tragic when depicted by Winick, as you feel as though the two really had just gotten to know each other. As I remember, much of Zamora's onscreen time on that season of "The Real World" was spent on Pedro as a serious young man/AIDS educator, but here we get to see Pedro as a laughing, jovial sort full of cameraderie and quotable witticisms. The telling of his childhood as a Cuban immigrant and the loss of his mother are especially touching. Everyone should read this book. It is a beautiful work.
a great book!.......2005-12-27
I barely remembered the show real world when pedro was on. I happened to find this book in a library when I was waiting for the bus. I read this book in one sitting. It is a beautiful story about Pedro. It also tells a lot about the real world experience. I do think that this book should be read by all teenage students for the way it was written. It is written in a cartoon style..........anyone could read it, it really has a lot of information about aids prevention with out getting all preachy. When I finished reading this book , I felt emotionally drained. I really wish I could have met Pedro.
I also wish that MTV would release the whole season on dvd.
Wonderfully haunting.........2004-11-17
I have never seen 'The Real World', nor had I heard of Pedro. I merely picked this book up on a whim, and discovered an amazing tale of friendship, both beautifully drawn and exceptionally realised. Brief, but hard to forget.
Winick's life has obviously changed after meeting Pedro, and I am suprised so many reviewers feel that he is capitalising on Pedro's death. Rather, Winick strikes me as having a great amount of love and admiration for his former friend, all the while using the comic medium to become a voice for Pedro's cause. Essentially the work is looking to promote AIDS awareness and direct a future that is increasingly knowledgable and embracing of non-normative sexualities.
The art is quite lovely; somewhat like Craig Thompson's 'Blankets', although the comic couldn't be more different. I thought the layouts were quite innovative and the whole piece was quite an achievement and obviously completely heartfelt, which is so uncommon in the comic genre.
However, I did feel that the time in the house was skipped over quite briefly to focus on his death. While the exploration of his demise was important, I think it is also essential to portray more of his household interactions, considering they were the basis for the friendship.
Additionally, the comic's cover is a real led-down point for Winick. It is poorly designed, old-fashioned and quite unappealing. It does not really exhibit the true wonder of this comic, which is a shame, because it is quite masterful.
Irrespective of this, I could not recommend this work enough. It is beautiful and deep, aching and gentle. I really admired it.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing personal story applicable to many conflicts today.......2004-04-12
Sender-Baryon's book evokes transcendent sadnesses by unfolding so artfully yet simply the story of one family's horrors under a style of political brutality all too familiar in the world.
The most poignant aspect, of course, as we have been told so many times in such stories, is the pain and guilt of the survivors tormenting themselves with their personal might-have-dones.
It never ends. There are 800,000 stories like this one about Franco's Spain waiting to be told by Rwandans about the Hutu massacre of the Tutsis. These stories, like those of Spain, await because the world knew of the evil and turned away, despite all we of Euro-American culture have learned about Hitler, Franco, Stalin, Milosevic, etc.
An Intense Family History.......2004-04-11
This book is astonishing. I found myself amused, curious, sad, and almost uncontrollably angry, sometimes all on the same page. The writing style is distinctive. As I progressed through the book I became consumed by it. In some passages the transition from the present to the past comes without warning, from interview to narrative without segue, as if the memories of the author or the memories of another have suddenly taken a life of their own and started writing themselves. An old adage I love goes something like this: "Disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." I found A Death in Zamora to be one of the most profoundly disturbing books I have ever read. I was aware of the tragedies of the Spanish Civil War but the story of the author's search for the truth about his mother brings them to the public on such a personal level. He has shown us a piece of his soul, a piece of his family'a soul, a piece of Spain's soul.
The Crimes of Franco.......2003-12-02
This is a deeply moving, indeed deeply upsetting book, which has much to say to several different audiences. The central narrative relates the quest by man brought up in the United States to discover the fate of his mother in Spain during the Civil War of the 1930s. His father was the world famous novelist, Ramón J.Sender, author of Seven Red Sundays and a well-known leftist. A target for the military rebels because of being married to Sender, Amparo Barayón fled to her native city of Zamora hoping to be safe there. In fact, she was imprisoned, tortured and eventually executed - her horrendous fate typical of what happened to many innocent women at the hands of the supporters of General Franco. In that sense, this book is a major contribution to the history of right-wing atrocities during the Spanish War. In addition, however, the subsequent story of how Ramón J. Sender took his two children to the United States and then virtually abandoned them is also horrific in its way and makes for a tragic psychological drama that will be of interest to many people not concerned with Spanish history. The story of Ramón Sender Barayón's quest also happens to be a rivetting detective story. I read the first edition of this book about six years ago and immediately bought several copies to give to friends and their reaction confirmed my own. An important and neglected masterpiece!

Book Description
The best of Outside magazine's "The Wild File." Join longtime Outside editor and contributor Hampton Sides as he rollicks through the fascinating, quirky questions readers ask about the world around them: Do beavers ever get squashed by the trees they're gnawing down? Why are there so many worms writhing on the sidewalk after a storm? What good are goosebumps? Why do llamas spit? What is the oldest living creature on earth? Focusing on natural history and outdoor lore, this collection ranges from the gothic to the comic to the cosmic. It includes the sorts of questions that most of us stopped asking (at least out loud) when we were eight years old. "The Wild File" is what question-and-answer columns should be but seldom are: an often surprising, sometimes zany, always insightful and informative back-and-forth between a devoted readership and its publication. The result is an enchanting and enriching collection of answers that open windows to more questions. 60 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
For the child at heart.......2007-10-02
"Why Moths Hate Thomas Edison And Other Urgent Inquiries into the Odd Nature of Nature" is filled with all the stupid, ridiculous, silly, or `obvious' questions we're too afraid to ask, or feel we should already know the answers to. Best of all, the folks at Outside Magazine tracked down the most obscure of experts to get the answers.
So if you've ever wanted to know precisely why a tongue will stick to cold metal (and what to do about it if it should happen to you), you can find that out in here. If you want to know how goose down is collected, that's in here too. The book debunks common myths, such as the idea that eagles mate in midair and sometimes fall to the ground and die during the act. It explains the exact science behind that distinctive smell in the air when it rains, and the factors that have created the misconception that tornadoes are somehow attracted to trailer parks. Next time someone gives you guff over your male pattern baldness you can point them to the argument in here for why it's actually a sign of virility and fertility.
The editors turn seemingly dull questions into far more entertaining discourses. For example, the question of how high birds can fly becomes a catalogue of the highest KNOWN flights, most of which had rather... sudden... ends.
If you're the kind of person who hasn't given up their sense of wonder at the universe, this is a great book to have around. It makes a great conversation starter, but it's equally fun to just sit down and read for enjoyment's sake.
Very funny facts........2003-07-14
217 pages of funny answers to weird questions asked about the world, nature and, in general, the universe around us. Like, how many times can a stone skip on water? Is Pluto really a planet? What is foxfire? How do ducks float? Where does the white go when the snow melts? Are blue moons really blue? Why do worms always show up after the rain?
The book comes with an index, so you can look up facts fast, and the intro comes with an e-mail address because 'The Wild File' which the book is based on still lives on the pages of 'Outside' magazine and they still need questions!
Easy to read, funny and with answers anybody can understand. I would suggest this book for anybody, young or old.
THE WONDERS OF NATURE.......2002-06-13
Remember when you were a child filled with curiousity and wonder about nature? You asked many questions such as why do ducks float, do people go crazy during the full moon and why does do collect in the morning? All of those were great questions and some of them may or may not have been answered to your satisfaction. Now your children are asking the same questions and what are you going to say?
Never fear, dear friends. Outside Magazine's "The Wild File" has provided us with a book answering those various hard questions that we have about nature. Why Moths Hate Thomas Edison is a compendium of the best of The Wild File column. You are presented with five files dealing with various forms of nature. Each file has a question/answer format and cites the person who asked the question.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some of the questions sounded stupid but in reality made sense. The answers were informative and hilarious. You would be surprised over the number of experts in such esoteric fields of wildlife. For example, one informant researched the number of pushups that lizards do in their exercise regimine. Yes, there are people who really do that.
What is also great about this book is its brevity and accessibility. You can share it with your children as they ask you the great questions of nature. You can spend time finding those answers to questions you had as a child. This is a delighful read. So go out and find out why lizards do pushups and why llamas spit.
Great book of short topics.......2001-12-05
This is one of those books that you read in one page sections. It is basically a collection of interesting questions that the author has answered while working for a magazine. The questions are fun and he gives pretty complete answers. The answers are usually about a page in length so if you want to read something for five minutes this book is perfect. The information is cool, I really enjoyed it. It gives you a lot of responces to questions you often hear.
VERY GOOD BOOK.......2001-09-27
this book is really good... i found it informative and interesting... i recomend iut to everyone

Book Description
This collection of essays provides the definitive survey of the importance of agricultural reform to the future of the world's trading system. There is growing consensus concerning the need to reduce the level of subsidies in agriculture and to open up the markets of the developed world more to the farmers of the developing world. However, while non-governmental organizations such as Oxfam may agree on this point with free trade economists, governments in Europe and the U.S. seem reluctant to give up their protectionist habits.

Book Description
In recent years the relationships between trade and the environment, and trade and development, have become increasingly complex. The need to reconcile the competing demands of economic growth, economic development, and environmental protection has become central to the multilateral trade agenda. In this volume various commentators debate the role of the World Trade Organization and other institutions in addressing these challenges. The book arises from the papers presented at two High Level Symposia hosted by the World Trade Organization in March 1999, on Trade and the Environment and Trade and Development.
The first section of the work focuses on the relationship between trade and the environment. The issues addressed include the need for WTO members to pursue integrated trade and environmental policies in order to achieve sustainable development, ways in which the removal of trade restrictions and distortions can lead to positive environmental and development solutions, the relationship between WTO provisions and trade measures contained in environmental agreements, and the need for transparency and effective interaction between civil society and the trade community.
The second section examines the growing importance of developing countries in the global trading system over the last 30 years, and the ways in which the inequalities which persist between countries may be addressed. The papers include discussion of the need for integration of the least-developed countries into the multilateral trading system, the ways in which international institutions may work together to realize the objective of development, the complex role of trade liberalization in development, and the importance of new technologies in accelerating integration between developing and developed countries.
Book Description
What role should international trade rules and the World Trade Organization (WTO) play in the protection of the environment? While many environmentalists argue that trade rules and procedures must be made more "green," many trade proponents fear that the international trading system will be undermined by extreme demands of environmentalists.
In this essay, Gary Sampson scrutinizes these contending views and assesses the effects of trade liberalization on the environment; the role of the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism; the potential impact of WTO rules, including those dealing with production processes; and the relationship that should exist between the WTO and specific multilateral environmental agreements.
In his discussion of these issues, Sampson puts forward a priority agenda for trade and environmental ministers and proposes ways to enhance the WTO's environmental protection role and strengthen the trading system at the same time.

From the author: The results of the model indicate that the liberalization of rice trade in accordance with the WTO agreements will result in increased demand in the ASEAN region. This will be brought about by the fall in prices in the ASEAN countries. Committing to reduce the soaring level of tariffs is expected to bring about a more positive effect on Indonesian rice sector, but this favourable outcome would not be realized if WTO agreements co-exist with the implementation of the ASEAN Free Frade Area (AFTA). Finally, the WTO trade liberalization process in the time of the implementation of AFTA will effect trade diversions in the ASEAN rice sector.
