Now this revolutionary book has been completely updated and expanded for the 21st century! Through revised text, new photos, specialized illustrations, updated charts and additional information sidebars, The Ultimate Sniper once again thoroughly details the three great skill areas of sniping: marksmanship, fieldcraft and tactics. Just some of the material in this new edition includes: * Cutting-edge sniper rifles, scopes, ammunition and equipment, everything purpose-designed or adapted specifically for military and police sniping. * The latest tactics and techniques from the frontlines of the War on Terror, including the mountains, deserts and urban areas of the Middle East and Central Asia. * Analysis of evolving technologies, including lasers, night vision, FLIR and ballistics programs. * Detailed ballistics and trajectory data for sniper ammunition. * An all-new chapter on countersniping lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan * An up-to-date listing of U.S.-based sniper training programs. Find out why professional snipers, sharpshooters and long-range riflemen consider The Ultimate Sniper to be the bible of their craft. A veteran of the top-secret Special Forces covert operations unit MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War, Maj. John L. Plaster combined what he learned of stealth, stalking and camouflage with his postwar experiences as a competitive shooter and firearms instructor to write The Ultimate Sniper. Over 60 pages of the original manual have been replaced with updated, modern information. An additional 120 NEW PAGES have been added with the above information!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever want to konw about Marksmanship.......2007-08-15

Everything, and I mean every single aspect of snipers, markmanship, ballistics, weapons, tactics, military and civilian organization, is covered. Things you want to know, things you didn't know you wanted to know, everything is here.

This is the Sniper and Marksman Bible.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Own This Book.......2007-02-14

Plaster's first version of this book was one impressively far-reaching effort at putting it all on paper (pun not intended, but welcome.) A boatload has happened in the firearm, ammo, optics, and sniping world since then, so this book, unlike most updated books, is well worth the effort for Plaster to write. The first version; 451 pages, this version, 572! That's a lot of new material. Even if you own the first version, and especially if you don't, you'll be happy you have this book in your "book arsenal" (for you Field & Stream readers.)

4 out of 5 stars Very impressive feedback.......2006-07-13

This extended/updated version is a very handy and an impressive feedback from Maj. PLASTER. The first opus was a great book, very accurate and useful, but this one come further and give us all the newest techniques and experiences from the combat zone.
It's like this book was Army/USMC approved, and we can pick a lot of tips and tricks from real sniper at bay.
However, you'll find a lot of "already seen" informations and sometimes, you'll have to find what's really new down there.

But I really appreciated all the informations concerning new ballistics, especially the M118 LR tests and ballistics cards

Finally, this book is a new "have to buy" from Plaster...

5 out of 5 stars Juba likes it........2007-03-24

I bought this book because when I watched the Juba the Sniper movie they mentioned this book. During the video they interview the commander of the Baghdad sniper brigade he says this book is their main training manual. For all you who want to see theory applied to the real world downloand this movie, it shows about 25 attacks on US soldiers in Iraq. It will give you something to think about. What more do you need than real snipers saying they use this book?

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely detailed.......2006-05-16

This book is the finest book I own on precision shooting. And I own quite a few. Maj. Plaster is a master at precision shooting and has given us the science of it in this book. This book scientifically teaches you how to put one bullet into a target at extreme ranges. It also teaches you about stalking, building hides, range estimation, counter sniping, mantracking, target priorities, camo in various environments, and something defensive books doesn't ever teach you, offensive tactics. I have probably read this book 3 times over, because there is so much detailed information in this book to learn. This book is written so that even the most unskilled shooter can understand. Survival and equipment section is just as informative. Buy this book before you buy or build your rifle, for it will open your eyes as to what to look for in a rifle and scope.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Sniper : An Advanced Training Manual For Military And Police Snipers.......2005-09-10

This book has been, and will continue to be the standard by which other "sniper manuals" are judged. I first read this book about 10 years ago and I have learned and relearned several important tactics and techniques every time I read it. A must for the LE marksman who has no military background.

        The National Bestseller

In the autumn of 1558, church bells across England ring out the joyous news that Elizabeth I is the new queen. One woman hears the tidings with utter dread. She is Amy Dudley, wife of Sir Robert, and she knows that Elizabeth's ambitious leap to the throne will draw her husband back to the center of the glamorous Tudor court, where he was born to be.

Elizabeth's excited triumph is short-lived. She has inherited a bankrupt country where treason is rampant and foreign war a certainty. Her faithful advisor William Cecil warns her that she will survive only if she marries a strong prince to govern the rebellious country, but the one man Elizabeth desires is her childhood friend, the ambitious Robert Dudley. As the young couple falls in love, a question hangs in the air: can he really set aside his wife and marry the queen? When Amy is found dead, Elizabeth and Dudley are suddenly plunged into a struggle for survival.

Philippa Gregory's The Virgin's Lover answers the question about an unsolved crime that has fascinated detectives and historians for centuries. Intelligent, romantic, and compelling, The Virgin's Lover presents a young woman on the brink of greatness, a young man whose ambition exceeds his means, and the wife who cannot forgive them.

"In the autumn of 1558, church bells across England ring out the joyous news that Elizabeth I is the new queen. One woman hears the tidings with utter dread. She is Amy Dudley, wife of Sir Robert, and she knows that Elizabeth's ambitious leap to the throne will pull her husband back to the very center of the glamorous Tudor court, where he was born to be. Amy had hoped that the merciless ambitions of the Dudley family had died on Tower Green when Robert's father was beheaded and his sons shamed; but the peal of bells she hears is his summons once more to power, intrigue, and a passionate love affair with the young queen. Can Amy's steadfast faith in him, her constant love, and the home she wants to make for them in the heart of the English countryside compete with the allure of the new queen? Elizabeth's excited triumph is short-lived. She has inherited a bankrupt country, riven by enmity, where treason is normal and foreign war a certainty. Her faithful advisor William Cecil warns her that she will survive only if she marries a strong prince to govern the rebellious country, but the one man Elizabeth desires is her childhood friend, the irresistible, ambitious Robert Dudley. Robert revels in the opportunities of the new reign. The son of an aristocratic family brought up in palaces as the equal of his royal playmates, Robert knows he can reclaim his destiny at Elizabeth's side. Elizabeth cannot resist his courtship, and as the young couple slowly falls in love, Robert starts to think the impossible: can he set aside his wife and marry the young queen? Philippa Gregory's The Virgin's Lover answers the question about an unsolved crime that has fascinated detectives and historians for centuries. Philippa Gregory uses documents and evidence from the Tudor era and, with almost magical insight into the desires of Robert Dudley and his lovers, paints a picture of a country on the brink of greatness, a young woman grasping at her power, a young man whose ambition is greater than his means, and the wife who cannot forgive them. 2 out of 5 stars somewhat boring.......2007-09-29

I have read all the books in this series re: Henry 8th and enjoyed all of them except this one. In spite of the history during this period of time, the reign of Elizabeth I, this book concentrates far too much on the sexual relationship between Elizabeth and Robert Dudley as well as his whining wife, Amy. In terms of a synopsis, other reviewers have gone into depth but, again, the book is somewhat devoid of historical value. Gregory's theory about how Amy died is somewhat interesting but so much more could have been done with this time period. I actually came to despise the characters Dudley and Elizabeth. She is being portrayed as weak, Dudley obsessed, dumb and easily manipulated. As one of the greatest rulers in England, I found this characterization of her unbelievable and annoying.

        3 out of 5 stars Falls flat.......2007-09-23

This was not at all like Philippa Gregory's other novels that I have read. Instead it was just filled with boring war talk and it made Queen Elizabeth seem weak, confused, and not a good leader whatsoever. Once I got over that fact, the book was just okay.

This story discusses Elizabeth's first few years on the throne. Her 'lover' is Robert Dudley (who also appeared in Gregory's novel The Queens Fool) and the book is central to him, his wife, and his affair with Elizabeth.

At first I sympathized with Elizabeth and I was naïve to even sympathize with Dudley himself for a short time in the beginning, but quickly I was repulsed by his devious and selfish behavior. As the book went on (and let me tell you it dragged on and on... not a fast read AT ALL...) I was quickly on the side of Amy Dudley and I felt horrible for the way she was treated and disrespected by her husband and the Queen.

I have adored the handful of Philippa Gregory novel's that I have read so far (The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Constant Princess, and The Queens Fool) and I usually love biographical stories; therefore I was certain that I would enjoy this book as well. However, it was long, boring, and not filled with spice. If this is your first taste of Philippa Gregory, don't start with this book. Start with The Other Boleyn Girl; it is much better and much more fun.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read of historical fiction.......2007-08-07

This was my first Philippa Gregory book. It was a very enjoyable read, and I especially liked how she integrated historical events into the narrative. If you enjoy Elizabethan era history and movies like "Shakespeare in Love" you will enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars The weak side of Elizabeth, not a full view.......2007-08-07

Elizabeth I may be the greatest most interesting ruler ever and I love Philippa Gregory, so what happened here? I know Elizabeth relied heavily on Robert Dudley but this book ONLY focused on the vigins "lover" so the other more compelling strengths of Elizabeth are just not mentioned. This book provides a distorted, narrow view of Elizabeth. I have learned more about Elizabeth I's strengths through other books and also the HBO movie "Elizabeth I" with Helen Mirren which was excellent. I suggest other sources for Elizabeth stories - keep looking.

2 out of 5 stars Queen Elizabeth Fans Beware.......2007-07-25

While I have enjoyed several of Gregory's other works, including The Constant Princess, The Queen's Fool, and The Other Boleyn Girl, I couldn't even make it through this book. I am an avid reader of historical fiction and non-fiction and never have I been so disgusted with a portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I. Gregory writes about an immature, one-dimensional girl unable to make the simplest decisions without her lover, more focused on lust and adolescent games than running a country. Despite the fact that Queen Elizabeth I was fluent in English, Latin, Greek and had studied War, Science, Mathematics and was a model pupil throughout her schooling, Gregory expects you to view the Virgin Queen as little more than a village idiot who has the crown thrust upon her. While Gregory's works are on the whole fulfilling this left me completely dissatisfied and unimpressed with her writing.

        Book Description

An absorbing and illuminating account of the relationship between Robert Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I-a dramatic romance that has inspired countless films. Leicester's influence on the Queen was constant and incalculable, though he was reviled by his fellow courtiers, detested by the populace, and lampooned by writers. His character; lavish entertaining; encouragement of the arts; and day-to-day activities as he rose from courtier to leader of the English forces all come vividly to life.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Queen Liz and her favorite courtier........2002-08-28

This book, writes Jenkins in the preface, is not a definitive biography of Lord Leicester. That much is certainly true. But is it the definitive biography of the romance of Leicester and Elizabeth? Not either. According to Jenkins, the romantic feelings of the couple were real, but Elizabeth was almost too much of a monarch, and too much the traumatized daughter of Anne Boleyn, to give into them on ANY level. Jenkins satisfyingly explains this with much attention to detail, saying what Dudley and other important courtiers gave to the Queen at New Year's for example, and then commenting on the spirit in which the gifts were given and received. And she maintains enough of a distance from her subjects, Elizabeth, and Leicester's relationship to her, to keep the mystery of their romance vivid. One feels a History book about this couple OUGHT to be this detached and reverent. One learns a great deal about the personal likes and dislikes of the great Queen (a very sensitive nose, a passion for flirting, a thirst for power) and reads the reported, but obviously public, dialogue between the couple. "You are like my dog," Elizabeth tells Robin, "whenever people see you they know I am coming." Snippets like this make it understandable that Dudley would have been a bit frustrated with his Queen and his love. On the other hand when Dudley becomes curious about the Queen's relationship to her much younger suitor, the Duc D'Alençon, he asks her if "she is a maid or a woman." The Queen laughs and replies "a maid." Jenkins concludes, to the disappointment of Historical novelists everywhere, that this 'shows he had never deflowered her'. Uhuh, or that he didn't want the entire court to know that he had. That could explain why she laughed before answering. Nonetheless, the book is a gift for its information and insight, particularly into the political world in which Leicester operated.

        Book Description

Few relationships fire our imagination like that of Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester, Robert Dudley—the love affair immortalized in Philippa GregoryÂ's The VirginÂ's Lover—but nearly fifty years have passed since a book has been dedicated solely to their lifelong love.

Soon after Elizabeth became queen she scandalized the royal court with her passionate obsession with the married Robert Dudley. When DudleyÂ's wife mysteriously died two years later, there was rampant speculation that Elizabeth and Dudley would marry. Instead, over the next decades they formed a working partnership and an intimate bond of mutual dependence. Robert advised Elizabeth, serving as her counselor, unofficial consort, and army commander. He guarded her sickbed and represented her on state occasions. But despite her devotion, Elizabeth humiliated him, made him act as a go-between with her other suitors, and tried to imprison him when he finally remarried. Fueled by scandal and intrigue, this royal relationship was never dull.

Elizabeth & Leicester is an intimate, startling portrait of two people who transformed their age. For those who adore reading about the royals and the many fans of the Emmy Award- winning miniseries Elizabeth I and feature film Elizabeth, this is a story of enduring love that continues to speak to us today.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative.......2007-06-06

Fun-to-read book about the romance of Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester. There seemed to be a lot of information compiled from many sources to make this a fascinating "tell-all" which is no small feat considering the limitations of digging up such old records which were often all but scarce. This book not only showed Queen Elizabeth I as a woman who could love, but also showed her intelligence in using her head as well as her heart to make her relationships work also to her advantage as queen and for love of her country and able to keep Leicester loyal to the crown until his death. The author did a great job.

                          Book Description

Sievers takes on the task of explaining the remarkable economic declines of the post-Soviet Central Asian States (Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) in the past decade, and the turn of these states towards despotism. In 1990-1992 optimistic hopes for achieving transition to free markets, democracy and sustainable development were voiced. Instead, there has been a continued worsening of the serious environmental problems of the Soviet Union in its last decades.
Dismissing explanations of the decline as the result of 'Asian' or 'nomadic' values as simplistic and opportunistic, the author makes use of extensive fieldwork to explain this decline as the result of the region's unbalanced stocks of natural, physical, human, financial organizational, and social capital, exacerbated by the influences of development agencies, environmental NGOs, scientists, corrupt local politicians, and the inequitable downside of globalization symbolized by the WTO. Drawing on recent development in economics, law and political science, as well as a wealth of local sources, the book presents a compelling and unorthodox challenge to development agencies, scholars and human rights organizations to realize the implications of globalization and the challenges of sustainable development.

                          5 out of 5 stars A genuinely fascinating book.......2003-02-07

Given the breadth of the issues covered, the abundance of sources, and the insightfulness of analysis, this is probably as good as it gets in terms of scholarly writings about Central Asia these days. Unlike many of his western colleagues, Sievers is multi-lingual, and he takes full advantage of this: his coverage of sources is virtually unprecedented in the English-language literature on the region. Although written by a lawyer, this book is not a legal treatise. A sweeping account of the great expectations nurtured in the region in the early 1990s and the grand failures that ensued thereafter, this volume is a true eye-opener for the Anglophone public as well as a useful addition to the personal library of a student and a scholar alike. Whether he deals with civil society reforms or environmental regimes, Sievers is thoughtful and encyclopedic about his subject. Not only does he describe the experience of Central Asian states during their first decade of independence with enviable insight and commendable accuracy, but he also unhesitatingly challenges the many myths so uncritically popularized by other scholars. The fact that it is easily readable adds further value to Sievers' work.

We can know that water problem is not lying in the future but now. Especially Dead Sea basin is the source of armed conflicts over years. The Aral Sea problem shows no sighn to recover.
As previous reviewer said, this books let you blue. But it's necessary to think over the water management problem for our future.

Water is the main issue of our security in 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars We are doomed to repeat the past.......2001-06-02

i bought this UN publication for research into my Masters thesis on Caspian pipelines. I was curious about the impact that such hydrocarbon exploration could have on the environment. I need not of worried the ecology of Central Asia is already beyound hope.

This book is technical yet informative - and sad to read - it reminded me of a chapter in James Critchlows book on Uzbelistan about the rape of the environment. Divided into 5 sections of which 2 focus on the Aral, and the Caspian and a third on the Dead Seas - the other 2 sections proved and introduction and a final commeentary on the role of IGOs.

There are some colour satellite image maps and photographs, useful charts and there are useful recommendations made by some contributors.

It is very useful in relation to the Caspian that until recently ecological and environmental concerns were not adequately addressed - this book is a must for any seeking a factual analysis of the water crisis that is already here. Other newer books may seek to cover topical material but this is a must for those who want regional commentary on the problem. I recommend it.

                                Book Description

As the transition began, countries in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region had reason to take pride in their education systems. They had solved problems that still bedevil several other regions of the world: adult literacy was almost universal; participation and completion rates for children and youth of both genders were high at all levels of education; teachers came to work; students had textbooks; students from some of the countries that participated in international assessments of mathematics and science performed well; and repetition and dropout rates were low. However, as this study reveals, the education systems in ECA fit the planned economies and authoritarian political systems well, but fit market economies and open political systems poorly. Prevailing teaching methods and materials do not impart the skills required by a market economy, such as recognizing and solving problems and applying knowledge flexibly. This volume outlines strategies that are required to change the education system in ECA.

                                Download Description

This book addresses problems in the education systems of countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. These problems have emerged as the region adjusts to changes in the social and economic rules that governed choices and decisions in ECA for decades. Institutions are shifting, with significant consequences for education. ECA education systems now are not producing graduates able to adapt flexibility to the skill demands of interconnected market economies or vigorous civic societies. This book proposes ways to reframe ECA's systems of education to fit these new realities. The book also discusses the role of the Bank in the sector. The Bank should not lend to countries resistant to change in the education sector. For such countries, the ECA education sector will limit its activities to nonlending services that can help these countries benchmark their education systems against those of other countries.

                                  Book Description

Economic progress means not only increased wealth for the region as a whole but wealth which is equitably distributed through the creation of economic activities which provide a livelihood to as many people as possible. This has been achieved traditionally (in the successful examples) by the introduction of science, technology and innovation as the main engines of economic development. Whatever the accepted scenarios were (depending on the indigenous conditions), economic development has been achieved through the implementation of technological, economic or other types of innovation, which lead to stability and sustainability. In developing countries, it is usually not the lack of opportunities, but the lack of experience coupled with the absence of practical know-how, which impedes socio-economic development. Yet such knowledge is transferable. One can learn how to identify opportunities in operative terms and one can learn how to apply existing methodologies even in situations of social, economic and political uncertainty. Basically this is the essence captured in this publication.

                                    Book Description

An evaluation of the use of water by the riparian Central Asian states, with a primary focus on Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The paper discusses the basin's water resource geography along with other critical water issues including irrigated agriculture, the Aral Sea problem, water sharing among the basin states, national water politics, and the future of water management. These complicated management issues are central to understanding and tackling the environmental and agricultural challenges confronting Central Asia, and also have the potential to generate conflicts both within and between states.

                                        Book Description

"The best hope for protecting and sustaining the earth rests in understanding the way it works, particularly the ways in which human activities shape the natural world. The geographers reporting here bring a special set of skills to their work. They show us how complicated, delicate, and enigmatic the interactions of people and nature can be, and how careful we must be in our tinkering if we want to keep celebrating a planet like this one."-David R. Brower, Earth Island Institute

"This is a substantial and scholarly contribution by geographers to the biological conservation literature."-Thomas T. Veblen, University of Colorado

Developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are increasingly influenced by human-induced environmental changes. It is crucial that sustainable development be based on insights into these expanding processes-conservation as well as deterioration. Nature's Geography offers a new perspective on the geographical nature of these changes. The book reveals how human-environment relations must be understood at multiple scales and time frames.

Editors Karl S. Zimmerer and Kenneth R. Young have forged an exciting group of case studies from distinguished geographers focusing on high mountains, tropical forests, and lowlands, as well as humid and arid-semiarid landscapes. Each chapter analyzes the implications for meshing environmental protection and sound resource use with development.

The case studies evaluate three topics: spatial habitat fragmentation and forest dynamics; disturbances in mountain ecosystems; and the major activities of settled areas, chiefly farming, livestock-raising, and forestry. Included are analyses of interactions involving wildlife, such as primates and wild pandas; assessment of fire impacts and road-building; long-term forest management as well as recent techniques; and the role of environmental variation and ecosystem properties in agriculture and rangeland.

Nature's Geography demonstrates the vital importance of advancing a new approach to geography. This definitive study of landscape change and environmental dynamics will have wide appeal for those interested in geography, ecology, environmental studies, conservation biology, and development studies.
