Book Description

On August 21, 1940, a Nazi raider torpedoed the British merchantman Anglo-Saxon and machine-gunned the survivors as they tried to escape in their lifeboats. One little boat escaped with seven men. Five of them perished, but Robert Tapscott and Wilbert Widdicombe endured for seventy full days and 2,300 miles to landfall on the other side of the Atlantic. This is the almost incredible account of their ordeal - one of the most thrilling stories of the sea that almost never came to light. "It has seldom happened," writes William McFee in the introduction, "that a narrative so circumstantial, so entirely stripped of all humbug and false sentiment, has come out of the depths of the sea, to inspire us with admiration for human valor." Two Survived is an unforgettable true story of survival against the very longest odds. (5 1/2 x 8 1/4, 218 pages, b&w photos)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, very authentic.......2007-09-22

This was a very good book, so authentic you almost feel part of the hapless crew of this boat. The strong point is, it was written during the war, and it was not edited afterwards.. Luckily for us readers. You get a very authentic feel of how things were seen then. Excellent, well worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2006-08-05

This is an excellent book. All Brave Sailors by Revell Carr covers the same story in much greater detail and is also recommended highly.

3 out of 5 stars Good story - not well written .......2006-02-17

This is an amazing survival story but I think it could have been written better. This story was written in 1940 or 1941 right after the events described take place. The copy of the book I have was printed in 2001. Even though it is 60 years later they still say things like "they can't say where the convoy was headed because of security concerns...." I think 60 years later it is fine to know where a coal cargo ship is heading. There are several things like this in the book - it just shows 60 years later they didn't even spend a few minutes updating some minor details. That's minor stuff.

What I thought was worse was the way the author wrote the book. He starts of the first few pages telling you most of the story... who dies ... who survives... how long it all took... where the survivors finish their journey. I think that is a very poor way to tell a story. It's like watching a five minute edit of a movie just before you see the whole movie - kind of ruins most of the suspense. It's a good story but I would recommend skipping the intro & reading it at the end of the book. The guys endured some terrible events for sure. I do think it is worth reading if you like survival stories - it is one of the most amazing survival stories ever.

A much better read I would recommend is "Adrift".

Book Description

Saying Farewell to Innocence can be a gut-wrenching experience. Donny and Tricia had only themselves to rely on as they grew up during the turbulent years of the '30's '40's and '50's. Having a father who deserted them, and a mother who clung to them for the essentials of life, they learned to fend for themselves struggling to come of age. Their father, a narcissistic authoritarian, who adhered to the principal that children should be seen and not heard, enforced his demands with a soft rubber hose. Their mother, a soft-spoken woman with no self-confidence, relied on her husband for all things. Before he beat her to death, the kids helped her escape his dominating ways.

But freedom from fear has a price. After a devastating divorce, with no help from family members, on either side, they found themselves thrust into a role usually reserved for adults-providing the economic and emotional stability necessary to keep the family together. Their childhood and adolescence are filled with wondrous, hilarious, and heart-wrenching adventures as they struggle to survive and triumph over life's harsh realities, and survive their birth, their circumstances, and their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreak and Humor - A Great Memoir.......2007-10-03

I'm a big fan of memoirs and this is the best one I've read in a long time. Set in the 1940's and 50's, the story follows the life of young Donny. The reader learns how Donny and his family survive the war, poverty, and a abusive father who abandons them all. It's not all doom and gloom though. Donny may lose his father, but gains amazing friends and humorous life experiences and adventures in Los Angeles. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Becoming of Age.......2007-03-24

I read Farewell to Innocence in one sitting. It is a heartgrabbing tale of two kids trying to grow up with most of the odds stacked against them. Their mother, a loving, but uneducated and timid woman is dominated by her brutal, overbearing husband. The family loses two children, one shortly after birth another a few years later to illness. Meanwhile the breadwinner loves his booze more than his family. Donny and Tricia live a life filled with strict rules and rubber hose enforcement. Beatings are almost normal for Donny, who's slightest mistake earns a trip to the garage. At least at the beginning, living in their railroad car there was no garage.

                    Book Description

"This is the first major study of American Indians in Vietnam. . . . Dr. Tom Holm, a Cherokee-Creek himself and a Vietnam veteran, provides the unheard 'Indian Voice,' and he shares an insightful perspective on that controversial war."
-Donald L. Fixico, Professor of History, Western Michigan University

At least 43,000 Native Americans fought in the Vietnam War, yet both the American public and the United States government have been slow to acknowledge their presence and sacrifices in that conflict. In this first-of-its-kind study, Tom Holm draws on extensive interviews with Native American veterans to tell the story of their experiences in Vietnam and their readjustment to civilian life.

Holm describes how Native American motives for going to war, experiences of combat, and readjustment to civilian ways differ from those of other ethnic groups. He explores Native American traditions of warfare and the role of the warrior to explain why many young Indian men chose to fight in Vietnam. He shows how Native Americans drew on tribal customs and religion to sustain them during combat. And he describes the rituals and ceremonies practiced by families and tribes to help heal veterans of the trauma of war and return them to the "white path of peace."

This information, largely unknown outside the Native American community, adds important new perspectives to our national memory of the Vietnam war and its aftermath.

                                  Description:
A thorough understanding of the role of microbes in C cycling in relation to fire is important for estimation of C emissions and for development of guidelines for sustainable management of dry ecosystems. We investigated the seasonal changes and spatial distribution of soil total, dissolved organic C (DOC) and microbial biomass C during 18 months, quantified the soil CO"2 emission in the beginning of the rainy season, and related these variables to the fire frequency in important dry vegetation types grassland, woodland and dry forest in Ethiopia. The soil C isotope ratios (@d^1^3C) reflected the 15-fold decrease in the grass biomass along the vegetation gradient and the 12-fold increase in woody biomass in the opposite direction. Changes in @d^1^3C down the soil profiles also suggested that in two of the grass-dominated sites woody plants were more frequent in the past. The soil C stock ranged from being 2.5 (dry forest) to 48 times (grassland) higher than the C stock in the aboveground plant biomass. The influence of fire in frequently burnt wooded grassland was evident as an unchanged or increasing total C content down the soil profile. DOC and microbial biomass measured with the fumigation-extraction method (C"m"i"c) reflected the vertical distribution of soil organic matter (SOM). However, although SOM was stable throughout the year, seasonal fluctuations in C"m"i"c and substrate-induced respiration (SIR) were large. In woodland and woodland-wooded grassland C"m"i"c and SIR increased in the dry season, and gradually decreased during the following rainy season, confirming previous suggestions that microbes may play an important role in nutrient retention in the dry season. However, in dry forest and two wooded grasslands C"m"i"c and SIR was stable throughout the rainy season, or even increased in this period, which could lead to enhanced competition with plants for nutrients. Both the range and the seasonal changes in soil microbial biomass C in dry tropical ecosystems may be wider than previously assumed. Neither SIR nor C"m"i"c were good predictors of in situ soil respiration. The soil respiration was relatively high in infrequently burnt forest and woodland, while frequently burnt grasslands had lower rates, presumably because most C is released through dry season burning and not through decomposition in fire-prone systems. Shifts in the relative importance of the two pathways for C release from organic matter may have strong implications for C and nutrient cycling in seasonally dry tropical ecosystems.

This study examined the short-term effects of wildfire on fungal communities in two Mediterranean ecosystems in northwestern Spain, dominated by Pinus pinaster Ait. and Cistus ladanifer L., respectively. A large wildfire burned the areas on August 2002. During the autumn of 2003, fruiting bodies found in the plots were identified, and mycological richness, diversity and production in both burned and unburned areas were measured. A 50mx2m transect was established in each plot. In P. pinaster plots, total fungal dry weight decreased from 35.3kgha^-^1 in unburned plots to 1.9kgha^-^1 in burned plots, where richness, diversity of mycorrhizal species and production of edible fungi were significantly lower. Dry weight for mycorrhizal species was higher than for saprophytic fungi in the unburned treatments (75% and 25% of the total, respectively), but it was not significantly different in burned areas (56% and 44%). In C. ladanifer plots, mycorrhizal species diversity was higher than that for saprophytic species. However, diversity of total, mycorrhizal and saprophytic fungal species was significantly lower in burned plots. An overall decrease of richness was also observed in these plots. Fire significantly increased the abundance of the pyrophytic mycorrhizal species Leccinum corsicum, whereas Boletus edulis, usually associated with C. ladanifer in northwestern Spain, was not found in burned plots. Some mycorrhizal fungi associated with C. ladanifer are common to Pinus forests, so these pyrophytic shrubs can play an important role in the regeneration of P. pinaster stands after wildfire.

                                        Description:
Pterocarpus angolensis (Fabaceae) is a leguminous tree species of the miombo region of sub-Saharan Africa that is highly prized for its wood value. We use both experimental exposure to fire, as well as classification of field burned seeds, to predict germination rates in seeds from both husked and unhusked fruits. We find that seed germination and seed persistence in unhusked fruits are maximized by moderate exposure to fire. Germinating seeds had heavier fruit and seeds than those that did not. Finally, seeds without husks persisted in the soil yet continued to germinate even after 18 months in wet soil, indicating potentially long soil longevity. Using these results, we support an intermediate fire exposure model wherein repeated moderate exposure to fire enhances the capability of seeds to emerge from fruits. Seeds from unburned and unhusked fruits were never observed to germinate and had poorer soil longevity than those exposed to moderate fire. Similarly, extreme exposure to fire resulted in poor seed germination rates, often as a consequence of direct fire mortality of seeds. We suggest that early burning resulting in cool fires may augment germination and recruitment in wild populations.

                                          Description:
In West Africa policies for prescribed early fire and livestock grazing in the savanna woodlands are rarely based on long-term experimental studies. The inherently different management characteristics and their effects on the vegetation dynamics make landscape degradation a contentious issue. The effects of grazing intensity were investigated by a comparison of non-grazed areas, lightly grazed areas, moderately grazed areas, heavily grazed areas and very heavily grazed areas that received one of two fire treatments: early burning and fire protection in a long-term 12-year study. The parameters assessed reflected changes in herbaceous plant cover, biomass as well as soil physical and hydrological properties. The main findings were by and large specific for the grazing level. This supports the argument for devolution of management responsibility to the local level where there is indigenous site-specific knowledge but at the same time insufficient management capacity. A comparison of composite soil samples taken at a depth of 0-10cm did not differentiate significantly between treatments. This is probably because the composite soil sampling procedure hid the properties of the top first few centimeters. Grazing pressure had a tendency to reduce total above ground biomass (p=0.081). This was related to increased biomass removal and the trampling pressure (static load) exerted by the animals. The infiltration measurements indicated that the deleterious impact of cattle trampling increased as stocking rate increased. Livestock grazing significantly (p=0.038) lowered the infiltrability. Prescribed early fire had a tendency (p=0.073) to reduce the soil water infiltration rate. The subplots subjected to prescribed burning had a lower steady state infiltration rate compared to unburnt areas (means of 49.2+/-27.5mmh^-^1 versus 78+/-70.5mmh^-^1 for burnt and unburnt subplots, respectively). A partial least squares projection to latent structures showed that 34% of the steady state infiltrability was explained by the stocking rate and soil organic matter. Also all soil characteristics were significantly connected to steady state infiltrability suggesting that they are related to the soil hydrological response to trampling. From a management perspective, adoption of a short duration grazing system should avoid high stocking rates because they may adversely affect soil infiltrability, increase susceptibility to erosion in the savannas and decrease biomass productivity.
