Book Description
In this galvanizing account of the most dramatic of the Arab-Israeli hostilities, Abraham Rabinovich, who reported the conflict for the Jerusalem Post, transports us into the midst of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Rabinovich’s masterly narrative begins as Israel convinces itself there will be no war, while Egypt and Syria plot the two-front conflict. Then, on Yom Kippur, Saturday, October 6, 1973, we see Arab armies pouring across the shattered Bar-Lev Line in the Sinai and through the Golan defenses. Even the famed Israeli air force could not stop them. On the Golan alone, Syria sent 1,460 tanks against Israel’s 177, and 115 artillery batteries against Israel’s 11. And for the first time, footsoldiers wielding anti-tank weapons were able to stop tank charges, while surface-to-air missiles protected those troops from air attack
Rabinovich takes us into this inferno and into the inner sanctums of military and political decision making. He allows us to witness the dramatic turnaround that had the Syrians on the run by the following Wednesday and the great counterattack across the Suez Canal that, once begun, took international intervention to halt.
Using extensive interviews with both participants and observers, and with access to recently declassified materials, Rabinovich shows that the drama of the war lay not only in the battles but also in the apocalyptic visions it triggered in Israel, the hopes and fears it inspired in the Arab world, the heated conflicts on both sides about the conduct of the war, and the concurrent American face-off with the Soviets in Washington, D.C., Moscow, and the Mediterranean. A comprehensive account of one of the pivotal conflicts of the twentieth century.

How the modern middle east was formed.......2007-04-13
This book does an excellent job of recounting the entire Yom Kippur War from both the military and political standpoints. The first 100 pages cover the lead up to the war and the diplomatic maneuverings on both sides. It assesses the United States and Soviet Unions role and the fear of what detente would mean for the participants. You even see the ironic nature of Jordan's King warning Israel of the impending attack. Israel left itself blind to the possibility of an attack and was caught completely off guard. When Egypt and Syria launched their invasion it was a devastating blow for Israel. Syria proved its military ineptness fairly quickly and although recapturing part of the Golan proved that it was not going to advance much further. Even the intervention of other Arab powers, most notably the Iraqi's, were unable to break the Israeli hold. Egypt would be another story entirely.
Building the bridges literally in the face of the Israelis, the Egyptians crossed the Suez and attacked driving the Israelis back. Israel's own Patton, Arik Sharon, delivered some devastating attacks to the Egyptians and could have done more if not held back. The Israeli air force was hampered severely by SAM sights in Egypt. All of these aspects of war are very well covered and I will leave the surprising twists and turns out. One of the more notable parts is the Israeli reaction to the cease fire which they see as limiting their options and their attempts to flaunt it are many. The Israelis go so far as to get bogged down in invading Suez city. The end result of the war was a great victory for Egypt and a sober realization for Israel. This books analysis is top notch and does a wonderful job of showing what the wars significance is. If you want to understand the modern Middle East this is an essential book to read.
A thumping good read........2007-04-04
Just as I said, a thumping good read. Extremely well-written, from the Israeli point of view (for the mist part) this is a very engaging page-turner, that does a marvelous job of illustrating the war of 1973 in both military and political terms. Highly recommended.
So-so book.......2007-03-09
I was somewhat disappointed when I read this book especially after all the good reviews I read about it. If you are interested into the little fighting details, then this book is excellent. However, if you are looking for an analysis of the big pictures, this book is not for you.
Its main focus is on the Israeli side of the fighting. While it has a small discussion on the Egyptian politics and leadership conflicts, it has absolutely nothing on the Syrian side. A tiny and shy analysis is made of the cold war and its impact on the war. The position of the other Arab countries, like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and the Palestinians is completely ignored by the author (besides telling us that Iraq and Jordan send a few tanks to help the Syrian). The book gives the impression that King Hussein was simply a traitor that told the Israeli of the incoming war before it started (no analysis whatsoever on the motivation of King Hussein to do that).
The oil embargo and its consequences are mentioned in one sentence. There is no discussion whatsoever on the political aspects of the war. The challenges the US administration was going through. You have to guess that the US established an air bridge to re-arm the Israeli army (as the author barely mentions it). The book is just a series of stories of the heroism and sacrifices of the Israeli soldiers. From that perspective, it is an excellent book.
Exceptionally comprehensive review.......2007-01-26
This is the best account of the Yom Kippur War publicly available. It brings to life the critical decisions made in the capitals and battlefields of the Middle East that would shape its events for the next 30+ years. I would highly recommend it for those with an interest in the politics and history of the region. The book gives a highly detailed review of a frantic 18 days in October 1973 that would have a huge impact on Middle Eastern relationships going forward.
Greatly Advances the Understanding of the Yom Kippur War.......2006-08-05
Rabinovich has greatly advanced the understanding of the Yom Kippur war, as Norvell De Atkine wrote. An increasing number of memoirs by the participants and the release of Israeli documents enable the author to piece together a much clearer picture of what happened. This book is written in a chronological, narrative style that is riveting, portraying the ferocity of the conflict, using the words and writings of Israelis from the private to the prime minister. This is accomplished in a seamless fashion, moving from the Golan front to the Sinai, from the soldier on the ground to the high command.
Rabinovich illuminates the glaring failures of some of the Israeli commanders, blinded by personal animosities and a deprecating view of the Arabs, whose courage and abilities in the war the author notes. He makes clear that the courage and initiative of Israeli junior officers and enlisted men turned the tide, despite, rather than because of, their higher command leadership.
He examines the near-fatal intelligence assessments by the Israelis with their ingrained belief that the Egyptians were not ready to attack. Despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary, Israeli intelligence maintained this assessment until the last day, allowing the Israelis to be surprised and nearly overwhelmed.
Rabinovich focuses on the human drama of the war but does not provide more than occasional glimpses of the Arab side. This is a function of the fact that there are few credible Arab sources available, particularly on the Syrian side. Although not intended as an academic strategic study of the war, much can be learned from The Yom Kippur War by specialists as well as the general reader.

The interior Southwest United States--which Elizabeth John defines as including "that vast arena stretching westward from the pine-forested great bend of the Red River to the red desert mesas of the Colorado Plateau"--was a hotly contested territory for generations. First came the Spanish, who conquered it while never completely subduing the indigenous culture. Then came the French, who fought with Spain over control of what is now Louisiana and eastern Texas. Still later came the English and, finally, the Americans, who were able to capitalize on the exhaustion of the great colonial powers. John, a highly regarded historian of the region, takes a panoptic view of these complicated events and delivers a fine, gracefully written overview.

The Importance of "Storms Brewed in Other Men's Worlds".......2002-10-11
The famous Mexican writer, Carlos Fuentes, said, in effect, that the Hispanic world did not come to America, America came to the Hispanic world. No book reveals this with more clarity and accuracey that this one. It represents 400 years of history of what is now the American Southwest. The author writes with the dramatic eloquence of a seasoned novelist creating a history book that is, of all things, a "page turner." It reveals epics, sagas, villans, and both noted and anonymous heroes. It is a shame so many of our educational systems do not teach this history becasue it is the story of millions of Amerians and fully one-third of United States territory. If anyone has ever looked at a map and wondered why so many mountains, cities, villages, rivers, plains, states, and people have Native American or Spanish names, this book will answer those questions and more, it will help them appreciate Mr. Fuentes' insight.

Book Description
Developmental changes in cognitive abilities in childhood have long been of interest to researchers across many fields, including behavioral sciences, communications, education, and medicine. With the publication of research findings showing individual differences in the development of children's learning skills has come the realization that models, methodologies, and analysis approaches that include consideration of individual differences are needed. It has brought an increase in research collaborations among experts in different fields who bring different approaches together in studies of cognitive abilities. This work has yielded a growing body of knowledge about how children with normal abilities and those with developmental disorders learn, gain skills in social competency, develop decision making and planning abilities, and acquire language skills and the skills needed for reading and writing. More recently, researchers have sought to use this body of knowledge as a basis for the early identification of children at risk for cognitive delays and for the development and evaluation of intervention approaches. The chapters in this book review literature in five areas of cognition, and provide theory- and research-based information on the applications of research findings and intervention approaches. Throughout the chapters, information on the interactions of different cognitive abilities and the role of individual differences in development that influences development assessments is included.

Book Description
It is perhaps no exaggeration to suggest that all of what is intrinsically human experience is grounded in its shared nature. Joint attention to objects and events in the world provides the initial means whereby infants can start to share experiences with others and negotiate shared meanings. It provides a context for the development of both knowledge about the world and about others as experiencers. It plays a central role in the development of the young child's understanding of both the social and nonsocial worlds and in the development of the communicative interplay between child and adult. The first devoted to this important topic, this volume explores how joint attention first arises, its developmental course, its role in communication and social understanding, and the ways in which disruptions in joint attention may be implicated in a variety of forms of abnormal development including autism. br
Customer Reviews:
Joint Attention, Masters and Directions.......2000-03-31
This volume laudably views research in the area of joint attention. Jerome Bruner's fascinating Forward provides a joint referent for the entire volume, beginning with his own long-standing interest in "sharing attention", coalescing the three primary strains of research which contribute to the current understanding of joint attention, and circling back to the question "what impels children to seek joint attention with others." Dunham and Moore choose their contributors to provide a broad spectrum of theoretical and research orientations which contribute to the amassed knowledge in this area, as well as providing their own historical perspective and current themes in research. Overall the book is not only scholarly, but erudite, and well written. For anyone seeking a basic review of the concepts and research in the area of joint attention, this book fills a unique niche.

Marxism and the Philosophy of Language

Book Description
This study identifies key mechanisms through which a young child operates with external knowledge in his/her immediate social context. Central to this is the child's capacity to draw on discourse-based understandings that have become evident in prior interaction. In contrast to studies that analyze development under different headings, such as language, emotions and cognition, Tony Wootton links these aspects in his examination of the state of understanding that exists at any given moment in interaction. The result is a distinctive social constructionist approach to children's development.

Book Description
In the past decade, psychology has increasingly acknowledged the importance of considering the role of culture for understanding human development. One of the major issues now confronting those interested in this issue is how cultural meanings, values, and practices are appropriated by persons growing up and living in concrete contexts. The general theme addressed in this volume concerns how enactments of cultural understandings in social interactions form the fabric of individual experience and the specificities of individual development.

Product Description
For young children, two of the most important tasks they face are learning how to communicate and learning how to think about themselves and the social world around them. The premise of this book is that these two tasks are inherently linked. The communicative routines and language that children learn enable new modes of cognition, which in turn allow for more complex social interactions. The model of early child development that emerges is one in which equal importance is given to the socio-cultural context in which children are developing, and to the role played by children in actively constructing their own knowledge. Each of the chapters in this volume examines a unique aspect of this interplay between children's cognitive development and their social interactions. The book is organized into four thematic sections, each introduced by an integrative overview. The first section, "Language and Cognition," examines the function of language in young children's lives. The second section, "Intentionality and Communication," explores young children's understanding of intentions and their verbal and non-verbal communication. The third section, "Theory of Mind and Pedagogy," examines the ways in which developments in cognitive and communicative skills transform children's participation in the process of teaching and learning. The final section, "Narrative and Autobiographical Memory," looks at the effects of narrative on young children's understanding of themselves and their world. This book will be of great interest to anyone concerned with young children's learning and development, including developmental psychologists and educators. Each contributor is a leading researcher in developmental or educational psychology.

Book Description
A Lifetime of Communication explores the developmental processes that make for uniquely human change and growth. In this distinctive work, author Julie Yingling utilizes a single case example of a child, her parents, and other influential figures to demonstrate developmental interaction and transformational life events. Using relational and dialogic perspectives, Yingling follows the child from infancy into adolescence and adulthood, through the stages which the child acquires the means to communicate, to form and develop through relationships, to build human cognitive processes, and to understand the self as a responsible part of the social world.
The work presents traditional and cutting-edge developmental theories as well as current research and relational perspectives in a palatable framework, employing a case example from a person's life at the start of each content chapter. Yingling examines communication and cognition in the various stages of human development, making connections between communication, relationships, and maturation. She also distinguishes the biological and physiological portions of development from those that are relational and self-directed. She concludes the volume with a summary of relational dialogical theory and a discussion of the implications of this perspective of development-both for the future of communication study and for personal growth.
This monograph offers many new insights to scholars in human development, relationships, family studies, social psychology, and others interested in communication and relationships across the life span. It is also appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in relationships, developmental communication, and relational communication.

Book Description
The studies in this volume measure the various behaviors that are displayed as infants and mothers share their attention on an outside object: joint engagement, following gazes and points, gestures, imitation of actions, and language comprehension and production. The authors show how infants follow a progression from sharing to following to directing others' attention and behavior, and how these skills are related to early communicative competence. Their results have important implications for theories of social-cognitive and language development.
