Book Description

Although Sparta's early history is not clear, by the end of the 8th century most of the other cities of Lakedaimon had been reduced to subject status. The Lakedaimonians were the only full time army in ancient Greece and were thus truly an elite force. The institutions of the state and the system of education were organised with a view to creating superbly trained soldiers. Nick Sekunda examines this unique military machine in this book describing the organisational systems of the Spartan army through the Hellenistic period, how they were trained, the battles they fought, and the society that produced them.

3 out of 5 stars Good Pamphlet .......2007-09-29

This book has good information, but is small. I would actual only consider it a pamphlet. Was expecting a little more but overall it is a good basic review of the Spartans with a few good illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Thermopylae.......2007-08-24

This title takes the reader past the infamous Battle of Thermopylae and examines the whole Spartan military system from its gradual birth in the 8th Century BC until its decline in the 4th. It captures numerous interesting details-like the poems of Tyrtaios and the brutal treatment of the helots. The 12 color plates are good, but would have looked better if by Angus McBride or Christa Hook. Overall it is a good source on this brutal warrior society and the state they fought to maintain for centuries.

1 out of 5 stars ????.......2006-11-17

"At some point during the 5th Century...the Lakedaimonian army decided to discard their cuirasses.... In due course other Greek armies followed the Lakedaimonian lead and abandoned their heavy body armour. This situation continued into the 360s...." (p. 28)

Well, that's news. If anyone out there can confirm by appropriate citations (there are none in this pamphlet)that Greek hoplites did not wear armor in, say, the 2nd Peloponnesian War, or at Cunaxa, please let me know, will you? Until I get some confirmation for this amazing statement, I will regard it as one of the biggest bits of nonsense I have ever read.

I find equally astonishing the view that the Spartans, unlike all the other Greeks, continued to wear the muscle cuirass, not segmented armor. "It must be admitted we are dealing with a rather small sample of evidence" says the book. Maybe common sense could occasionally play a part as well, dear author??

This book now has an honored place in my local landfill.

4 out of 5 stars great reference material.......2005-12-01

I use these books when making historically based drawings. As reference material they are generally excellent. The illustrations are by no means top notch but the gritty little details of everyday life make them great for both Artists and Reinactors but the skimpy text makes them too light for historians. The greek hopolite book is the better of the two editions.

2 out of 5 stars Short and Fragmented Source of Information.......2005-07-21

The Spartan Army was my first read in the Osprey series. From the posted reviews I expected something more thorough and written with a style typically found in historical references. What I discovered was a picture book with a very small amount of supporting text. Outside of a brief description of the territory, the military organization and fashion (yes that's right I said fashion) of the period I found little useful information in this book. An example of the paucity of information would be how the book detailed the organization of the military into divisions, but failed to mention even the most famous of the Spartan division leaders or Generals. The book spoke of the weapons used to fight, but did not describe any battles. I also think the organization of the book is somewhat confusing leading to disconnected passages and topics as opposed to drawing a history from beginning to end. The illustrations and photos, while nice, are captioned in a way to make it confusing at times whether the items are Spartan authentic or just general for the period. As opposed to my original expectation for a thorough treatment of Spartan history, I think the book is best used as a supporting set of pictures and illustrations for a more comprehensive treatment of the Spartan army.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive study of the 13th Texas Cavalry Regiment.......2005-04-11

Spartan Band: Burnett's 13th Texas Cavalry In The Civil War by Thomas Reid (History Instructor at Lamar University) is the definitive study of the 13th Texas Cavalry Regiment as it operated during the American Civil War. The result of Reid's meticulous research (letters, diaries, oral histories gleaned from more than one hundred descendants of the soldiers) and positive flair for reader-engaging writing, showcases a Confederate unit drawn from eleven counties in East Texas when it was organized in the spring of 1862 by two Texas Senators -- John H. Burnett and Anderson F. Crawford. Although a calvary unit, the 13th was ordered to dismount after crossing the Red River into Arkansas and fought as infantry until the end of the war, seeing action at Lake Providence, Fort De Russy, Manfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry. Disbanded in Hempstead, Texas, in May 1865, the unit was held in high regard and service it in paved the way for several of its troops to secure favor in business and political office. No dedicated Civil War Studies collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of Thomas Reid's Spartan Band!

          Book Description

This collection of essays, presented as a tribute to the career of Lois Green Schowerer, the highly-esteemed scholar of early modern British history, explores the several topics which have been central to her interests: politics, political thought, and the role of women in later Stuart Britain. Through two related sections, on the politics of violence and revolutions, and on the play of political imagination, American and British scholars address Professor Schowerer's pioneering brief for the role of radicalism in the three decades spanning the Restoriation and the Revolution: Professor Schwoerer offers her own view and summary of that `wicked and turbulent' era in response. Throughout, the articles are ultimately concerned with the underlying issue of sovereignty, coming to terms with the contradictions and continuing tensions between a desire for monarchichal stability and the fear of an emerging absolutism an issue not unique to the Restoration era. Whether looking back to the early career of Thomas Hobbes, the antecedents of patriarchalism and ancient constitutionalism, or the trial and execution of Charles I, they see the Restoration and Revolution in the broader context of the whole seventeenth century.Professor HOWARD NENNER teaches in the Department of History, Smith College.Contributors: MARK GOLDIE, JANELLE GREENBERG, TIM HARRIS, HOWARD NENNER, LINDA LEVY PECK, J.G.A. 3 out of 5 stars Irrelevant Information.......2003-08-28

If you're interested in the history of France, you may like this book. However, it tells far more about the history and politics of France than it does Nostradamus himself. Names are thrown in everywhere, and it's hard to distinguish whom certain information pertains to. It tells a good bit of information about his education, and it has a multitude of quatrains and their interpretations in Part Two of the book. If you're looking to read on Notradamus, there has to be a better one out there.

          4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2001-02-27

It was my first time to go deeply into some of the prophecies and prophets. This book really got me throughout end of the book. It contains his birth to his death... It also contains ALL of his prophecy in order, relating with his life events. You will suprised by how much this book tells about his life.

          4 out of 5 stars this is a re-issue.......1999-06-18

I have read this book about 10 years ago. So please forgive me. This Title was originally published by the creative press in July of 1941. so if you are into seeing the changes in the interpretations of the Quatrains over the last 58 years, this is a book for you. If you are into reading the quatrains themselves, than this is also the book for you. I enjoyed reading it, and occasionally pull it out after seeing a documentary about the predictions.

Lee McCann's riveting book gives us a fascinating glimpse into the life of Michel Nostradamus. Part historical novel part academic examination of the accuracy of Nostradamus' prophecies. Both readable and enjoyable, just what the layman has been looking for! Since governments, sects and countries will undergo such sweeping changes, diametrically opposed to what now obtains, that were I to relate events to come, those in power now - monarchs, leaders of sects and religions - would find these so different from their own imaginings that they would be led to condemn what later centuries will learn how to see and understand. - Nostradamus

By weaving together her personal awakening and the real-life intuitive experiences of her clients, Christensen not only illustrates why the use of intuition will necessarily become more commonplace in the third millennium, but also gets readers started on the path to unlocking their own intuitive potential.

Part One presents the current time period's critical role as an evolutionary portal through which we can more effortlessly adopt a sixth-sense reality, and what our existence will be like if we do. Christensen portends how the healing/medical field will look in the future, and defines the terminology involved in our shift to "three-dimensional" awareness.

Part Two demystifies the realm of "energy medicine" by describing a typical session as Christensen conducts it. She explains why someone would seek intuitive healing/guidance, what to expect during a session and how to find a qualified "intuitive." Poignant, true stories from individuals who've sought intuitive healing/counseling help to explain the short- and long-term positive outcomes of the work.

Christensen then identifies tips and techniques that can be used to tap the universal energy field and use it to your healing advantage.

Part Three is Christensen's compelling life story: her odyssey into healing and how she coped with personal crises, near death, and constantly living in dichotomous worlds--the earthly and spiritual.

This book's message is pure and pertinent to our times: that we are more than we think we are. Having faith in our inner wisdom will prove that if we allow it to speak to us. The rewards for doing so are personal fulfillment, health and aliveness, as well as an unprecedented spiritual transformation of the world around us.

5 out of 5 stars I'M PLEASED TO RECOMMEND HIGHEST AND BEST.......2001-07-16

Your book has just traveled with me through Havana, the beaches of southern Cuba, a hostel in Trinadad, and thru Quito, Ecuador. What a wondrous journey into better knowing your unique self and clues into the near future. Your thought-provoking and well researched book sends the reader on a path of hope, powered by faith, and built on love.

As an alternative practitioner (I'm an ethnopharmacist, a clinical and natural pharmacist, president/founder of the Student Rainforest Fund and pharmacy specialist for World Health Mission), always trying to be more intuitive, you gave me useful tools and plenty of food for thought. I particularly like your sentence at the end of page 66, "in short our greatest cures will come from honesty, compassion and love." Great words. I find them working wonders in my practice and in my life as I've tried to adopt them more. The great sage RUMI says on page 70, "so necessitious one, increase your need." How profound! but someday if mankind can tryly follow the 'path' to enlightenment then the "need" of doing anything will vanish, there will be no 'doing,' and all that remains will be the 'being.' Thanks for the lesson.

In The Highest And The Best: A Gifted healer's Vision Of Third-Millennium Medicine And Humanity's Intuitive Evolution, private-practice, intuitive healer and counselor Sallie Christensen (with the assistance of professional writer and editor Gina Hillier) draws upon her more than 20 years of experience and expertise to reveal a new way of living in the 21st century as she explores why the use of intuition will become commonplace in the third millennium. She explains that men and women will evolve into "three-dimensional" beings with a balance of body, mind, and spirit. The Highest And The Best is thoughtful, through-provoking, as insightful as it is ground-breaking, and highly recommended reading for all students of alternative medicine and metaphysical philosophies.

5 out of 5 stars WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK........2001-04-22

"The Highest And The Best" is thorough, thought-provoking, as insightful as it is ground-breaking, and highly recommended reading for all students of alternative medicine and metaphysical philosophies.

5 out of 5 stars We chose this for our Body & Soul Holistic Health Guide 2001.......2001-03-31

The Highest and The Best consists primarily of intuitive healer Christensen's personal story and vision for a future in which all human beings are balanced in mind, body and spirit. But it also lists valuable resources including "one-minute 'intuition-sharpening' tools" and a section titled "The New Language of Health," which defines and explains many complementary therapies.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring read!.......2001-01-26

The Highest and the Best is a fascinating book that takes you into the life of an extraordinary woman. The authors give factual information, but the best parts are stories of the actual people she has helped and the story of her life. Sallie offers insights into the world of medicine and spirituality. If you know a lot or just a little about intuitive healing, you will like this book.

                                Book Description

The second volume of the History of Humanity covers the first two and a half thousand years of recorded history, from the start of the Bronze Age some five thousand years ago to the beginnings of the Iron Age,
It is divided into two main sections. The first is thematic, covering the trends and developments that characterize the period covered. The second is geographical, studying the progress of peoples around the world; this section is split into two parts, one covering those regions for which written sources are available, the other covering those for which only archaeological and anthropological sources are available.
Written by a team of over sixty experts from around the world, this volume has a comprehensive bibliography, a detailed index for ease of reference, and is illustrated with black and white plates, figures and maps.

Libraries, archives, and museums hold a wide variety of moving images, all of which require the same level of attention to issues of organization and access as their print counterparts. Consequently, the people who create collection level records and metadata for these resources need to be equally conversant in the principles of cataloging. Martha Yee covers both descriptive (AACR2R, AMIM, and FIAF rules) and subject cataloging (with a focus on LCSH). In the process, the reader is encouraged to think critically and to be prepared to make decisions in ambiguous situations where solutions to problems are not always obvious or clearly dictated by specific rules.

                                      Book Description

An increasing world population with an ever greater need and greed strains the world's finite resources to exhaustion: Atmosphere, water, soil and genetic resources are being used and destroyed at an alarming pace. The Forum Belem I conference succeeded in bringing together a group of international administrators, businessmen, policy makers and scientists to identify emerging concepts that combine resource use with conservations and replace wasteful and destructive consumption with the use of renewable materials and non-destructive technologies. Intelligent changes in technological processes together with a transformation of political, social and institutional thinking are proposed, indicating paths toward sustainable development. A vision is given of incipient approaches toward world sustainability allowing mankind to live and prosper throughout a third millennium.
