Book Description
The Punic Wars triggered an era of astonishing human misfortune. Resulting from a mighty power struggle between the military confederation of Rome and the trading empire of Carthage between 264--241 B.C., 218--201 B.C., and 149--146 b.c., the wars were fought over a period of 118 years. Massive man-made devastation on both sides left RB.C.ome’s population radically depleted and Carthage razed and erased from the map.
Sir Nigel Bagnall brings his military experience and a modern professional eye to bear in analyzing the Punic Wars here. He marshals classic military strategists such as Livy, Polybius, and Diodorus to plot the wars’ campaigns in Spain, Africa, Sicily, and the Peloponnese, and follows Hannibal’s daring but unsuccessful strike into the heart of Italy.
But Bagnall goes beyond military strategy to discuss the force, structures, and politics of Rome and Carthage at their heights. And he contrasts their conduct of battle at strategic, operational, and tactical levels to show how they were governed by the same military principles used by nations today. His thought-provoking final chapter relates these wars’ lessons to modern times in an impressive argument for adapting the experience of the past to the needs of the future. While the history of the Punic Wars dates back over 2000 years, Bagnall’s comprehensive account demonstrates that this ancient conflict is remarkable both for its scope and its contemporary relevance.

Good but needs editing.......2006-08-24
I liked Bagnall's book, but they could've edited the thing a little better. I found lots of places where a comma was needed for clarity. Perhaps it's his style.
Bad History.......2006-06-06
This is one of the worst attempts at writing a historical account of a major episode I have ever encounted. Bagnall was clearly a novice at this sort of thing and it shows throughout the book. There are numerous glaring errors in detail, such as misidentifying key figures, misplacing sites and dates of events, and an almost incredible lack of sensible analysis of the reasons or importance of events. The reviewer who referred to Bagnall as a (Hannibal) hero worshipper was quite correct - Bagnall is one of those Hannibal apoligists who finds it necessary to glorfy a loser at all costs, including the cost of truth. The comments of another reviewer concerning Scipio, the true victor of the second punic war, are as misguided as Bagnall's dismal attempt to write history. For the reader interested in this history, please read Goldsworthy, Hart, or Scullard - these are ligitimate historians!
A British Historian Recaptures a Pivotal Chapter in Roman History.......2005-09-18
~The Punic Wars : Rome, Carthage, and the Struggle for the Mediterranean~ is some really bold historical prose capturing one of the most resounding conflicts in antiquity between the Carthaginians and the Romans, which were a series of three wars between 264 B.C. and 146 B.C. For the first time in United States, Thomas Duanne books has brought British historian Nigel Bagnall's epic history to print in 2005. The Punic Wars forever changed the destiny of Rome and marked their unfettered ascent to becoming an imperial power to be reckoned with. These two Mediterranean peoples stood in enmity one against the other, and their climatic struggle would set the balance of power in favor of Rome for the ages. In the third century before Christ, the great naval power in the world was not Rome but Carthage. The Carthaginians were descendants of the seafaring Semitic race the Phoenicians and their campaign of colonization inevitably brought them into a clash of arms with the Romans who had imperial ambitions of their own. As the Romans solidified their control over the Italian peninsula, Carthage extended their control over North Africa's entire arable coastline. Likewise, when Carthage expanded its colonies to Spain, Sardinia, and Sicily-they sparked a clash with the Romans. Treaties were broken and honor was at stake. The Romans took over Sicily seeking a buffer zone to minimize hit-and-run naval raids on the Italic peninsula. Hamilcar Barca and Hasdrubal sought to create a Carthaginian bastion on the Iberian (i.e. Spain) and its ancillary islands. What is more, the bold gambit of Hannibal is brought to life, as his ambition in Iberia is recaptured with amazing detail. The author meticulously documents Hannibal's painstaking and arduous transalpine march as his men struggled to brave the elements of Gaul, as well as the climatic battle with the Romans. The late British historian and former soldier Nigel Bagnall captures the epic clash of personalities with amazing detail. With the decimation of Carthage's Navy, an account of Rome's brutul subjugation of Carthage and her colonies is captured with astonishing detail. Cato's merciless quip "delenda est Carthago" ("Carthage must be destroyed") surmised the belligerent Roman policy toward their Mediterranean neighbors towards the south. Carthage itself would be utterly vanquished and plowed over with pillars of salt. Bagnall gives life to the ancient historical accounts in a keen narrative history. This book is powerful and yet easy to read. All things considered, it is a really good laymen's history of a pivotal war in the annals of history. Bagnall is possessed of a profound historical acumen that makes this particular book come to life. Though, a cursory understanding of Roman history is probably prerequisite for readers.
Hero worship and biased........2005-09-08
This is a well researched and written book, so why the 2 stars? Simply put this book is written by another white man who writes in a fashion that clearly shows his distaste for his own race and civilization, a trend that is all too common in this pathetic era of self-doubt and media induced frenzies of political correctness.
Here are a few examples: when the Romans commit some form of atrocity such as the sacking of allied cities to Carthage it is described as blood lust and wickedness, whereas if it is done by the Carthaginians it was done out of tactical necessity and no malice was involved...give me a break. The sacking of Roman cities described by the author's idol Hannibal, are always glossed over but the author never misses a chance to characterize Roman sackings as acts of folly and blood lust. Not to mention that the author gleefully tries to remind everyone that the Romans used slaves while he never states the fact that the Carthaginians also used slaves as well. The message is clear : white man bad...ethnic good.
Furthermore during the first Punic War the Roman navy suffered greatly from storms that destroyed their fleet on several occasions. This also happened to the Carthaginians during the Second War. The author states that for the Carthaginians this was ill luck and unfortunate, but for the Romans he states that it was incompetence. This is just one of the examples of double standards he applies to his much loved Carthaginians. The author is clearly one who wants to break with the image that Romans were mighty warriors (after all they conquered a vast empire) and he wants to install a revisionist notion that the Romans were in no way superior to other soldiers as was stated in previous historical works.
The author does, on the other hand, repeatedly drool over the supposed incredible prowess of the Numidian cavalry. The author gives an impression that the Numidians are the ultimate warriors. If that were so then how come they did not carve out a vast empire of their own? At the end of the Third Punic War the Numidians did have a small kingdom on the North coast of Africa that was united under one King. When this king died his kingdom fragmented when his sons fought one another to control it. The author somehow manages to try and blame the Romans (evil white men after all) for this because they were in negotiations with one of the sons for an alliance. Wouldn't it be the Numidians fault if they were fighting amongst one another instead of cooperating? How was this the Romans fault? The author could just not resist blaming the white man I guess.
These are only a few examples of the author's ethnic worshipping...there at many other examples throughout the book. If the Romans truly were as ungifted as the author tries to have us imagine then they would never have gone down in history as a great empire.
If you can't get enough of ethnic hero worship and have low self esteem then by all means get this book. Otherwise get another version of the Punic Wars.
Splendid History Applicable to Today .......2005-08-15
The late Field Marshall Sir Nigel Bagnall has done something in this book that is unique in my reading experience.
First, this book is a history of the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage. It is a military history, written from the standpoint of a senior military officer who is able to see and understand what the military of both sides were doing.
Second, this book goes beyond the military history of the two countries to explain the internal workings, the culture, the commercial activities of the two countries. He is then able to relate these points to the overall battle.
Third, the reason to study history is to be able to relate what happened to what is happening now. And he is able to relate these wars from so long ago to the conflict between the Soviet Union and the West.
Fourth, at the beginning of wars, the finding of competant generals has been a problem. This was true in the Punic wars. This was certainly true in the American Civil War (witness the number of generals Lincoln put in charge of the Army of the Potomac). And it was true at the start of World War II on the part of both the British and the Americans. In the short wars of the future, this cannot be allowed to happen.
Splendid history with direct applicability to modern times.

A riveting eyewitness account of the bloody guerrilla fighting that raged along the Missouri-Kansas border during the Civil War. Drawing from a wide array of contemporary documents--including diaries, letters, and first-hand newspaper accounts--Thomas Goodrich presents a hair-raising report of life in this merciless guerrilla war.

War At Its Worst.......2007-04-07
Every time I read about the guerrilla warfare in Kansas and Missouri I'm amazed that they were ever able to settle the region again. Both sides had their share of psychopaths who used the war to justify robbery, rape and murder.
Each side committed attrocities, which were used as justification for the attrocities committed by the other side.
The book is well-researched, and filled with first-hand accounts of what went on there. Anybody who thinks of war as a glorious adventure should read this book and see how ugly it can become. The brutality of the way they killed one another and mutilated the bodies of their victims is shocking.
Men surrendered, being told they would be treated as prisoners of war, only to be gunned down in cold blood. The murdered men were sometimes beheaded or scalped, and some of the killers rode around with necklaces made of body parts they had cut off of their victims.
It's not a very pleasant book to read, but if you want to know more about that part of the war, this is a good way to learn about it. If you don't want to read something this violent, but still want to know more about this part of the war, you should read Ride With the Devil (a novel covering the same topic) or watch the movie by the same name. The novel and movie are plenty violent, but not nearly as graphic as this book.
Much more brutal than The Civil War that was fought in the East.......2007-01-01
Well written account of the border wars between Missouri and Kansas. In a place and time without laws or remorse, this book can be shocking at times but the truth can be shocking as we all know. This book comes well recomended for anyone wanting to know more about this violent and bloody time in American history.
Lacking depth and narrative.......2006-05-14
The guerilla warfare along the Kansas-Missouri boarder brought forth some of the bloodiest incidents of the Civil War. Unlike many of the larger battles between Union and Confederate forces (where armies were pitted against armies) the conflict between Northern Jayhawkers and pro-South Bushwhackers moved beyond military actions and brought the war to innumerable civilians. Both sides burned and pillaged the region, causing massive financial loss and an untold loss of life.
Goodrich does an adequate job broadly describing the Boarder Wars of 1861-1865. His use of primary sources, i.e. diaries, newspaper accounts and correspondence brings an interesting look into the lives of those who lived through those bloody years. However, I found Goodrich's narrative lacking and the depth of his book to be quite shallow.
Although briefly touching on the more notable incidents of the war, i.e. the Lawrence Raid, Ewing's General Order No. 11 and others, he fails to thoroughly examine the events with a keen enough eye. The same can be said for his description of pertinent actors. Although remaining objective and granting fair coverage to both sides, he fails to truly explain the motives behind much of the guerilla leadership and their role in the conflict.
Little new was provided by Goodrich that has not been thoroughly fleshed out by other authors. I would recommend "The Devil Knows How to Ride..." by Edward E. Leslie. All though concentrating on William Quantrill, Leslie's work provides a much greater study of the guerilla wars than Goodrich.
No One Was a Hero.......2006-03-20
As the title states, this is indeed a riveting acccount of this era and place. Although a slim volume, this book is definitely a page-turner that is very well written and balanced with anecdotes, eyewitness accounts, and newspaper articles from the time.
With most histories it is easy to take sides in hindsight, or to proclaim who was right or wrong. Not so with the border war, where there were no heroes, no shining hour of courage, no happy ending to years of suffering. Both sides lost the battle as the border war raged. This is American History in its darkest time as lawlessness ruled, as the eyes of a nation were riveted on "big" battles to the east.
Although I was familiar with the redlegs, Quantrill, and Bloody Bill Anderson before I read this book, Goodrich breathes life into them, Quantrill benefiting the most. Often one of the most reviled characters in American history, Goodrich shows him as a more complex figure. In a war zone where any vestige of nobility was scarce, Quantrill comes off best, standing by his orders that women would not be harmed. If only the redlegs and Anderson's men had such a strain of character. That isn't to say Quantrill is heroic, just not as demonic as the other participants.
While I was reading this book, I also waded through a history of the Foreign Legion, which was more "academic" (meaning tedious and poorly written). In comparison to that book, this is a classic - even without so harsh a contrast this book is well written, well organized, and well thought out. I would recommend it to anyone as a satisfying reading experience.
An awesome book!.......2003-11-11
For many years I had studied the Civil War, especially the
Eastern theater and sometimes the Western theater. This was one
of the first books I read on the Trans-Mississippi, and it was one of the most eye-opening books I have ever read on the entire
topic of the Civil War. It shines a spotlight on little-known areas and personalities of the war and particularly on the murderous and often personal violence in the regions west of the
Mississippi. It offers a great corrective for those who view the
Civil War as a "gentleman's conflict" and a "chivalrous era."

Book Description
Food safety is a matter of intense public concern, and for good reason. Millions of annual cases of food "poisonings" raise alarm not only about the food served in restaurants and fast-food outlets but also about foods bought in supermarkets. The introduction of genetically modified foods--immediately dubbed "Frankenfoods"--only adds to the general sense of unease. Finally, the events of September 11, 2001, heightened fears by exposing the vulnerability of food and water supplies to attacks by bioterrorists. How concerned should we be about such problems? Who is responsible for preventing them? Who benefits from ignoring them? Who decides?
Marion Nestle, author of the critically acclaimed Food Politics, argues that ensuring safe food involves more than washing hands or cooking food to higher temperatures. It involves politics. When it comes to food safety, billions of dollars are at stake, and industry, government, and consumers collide over issues of values, economics, and political power--and not always in the public interest. Although the debates may appear to be about science, Nestle maintains that they really are about control: Who decides when a food is safe?
She demonstrates how powerful food industries oppose safety regulations, deny accountability, and blame consumers when something goes wrong, and how century-old laws for ensuring food safety no longer protect our food supply. Accessible, informed, and even-handed, Safe Food is for anyone who cares how food is produced and wants to know more about the real issues underlying today's headlines.

Eye opener.......2006-07-10
As a food safety trainer I did not realise the rest of what has and is going on to deliberatly sell us food that is not fit for the purpose all in the interest in profit.
One could have doubted what was written but we have just had the blatent disregard for food safety by 'CADBURY' the famous chocolate people claiming that only minute traces of bacteria may be present.
You either have bacteria or no bacteria there is no halfway house, this book will open everyone's eyes.
An important and well-documented expose.......2005-01-27
This is a well-written book by an author with experience in both the scientific and public affairs aspects of food quality and safety. Marion Nestle makes an effort to describe the complex scientific procedures associated with foodborne disease investigation, and the creation of bioengineered foodstuffs, reasonably clear to the layman / woman. Her message is simple and direct: as far as US government regulatory agencies, and the food industry itself, are concerned, food safety and wholesomeness is regarded as a secondary consideration to corporate profit. Her thesis is supported by a wide and varied list of references, including the scientific literature, print media, and quotes from participants involved in the struggle to make food safety one of the more urgent issues in contemporary public health. "Safe Food" covers such important topics as the outbreaks of E. coli caused by feces-contaminated ground beef; the ineptly regulated release of genetically engineered crops into farm systems and the spread of transgenes into native species; and the farcical (but ultimately tragic) mishandling of the "mad cow" epidemic by a British government blindly devoted to promotion of the beef industry. In each instance, Nestle documents how the food and agrochemical industries conspired to weaken federal oversight of food safety and quality by manipulating politicians and government officials, all in order to maximize profits.
The book is not perfect; some of the sections describing various scientific procedures may have benefited from the inclusion of explanatory diagrams, rather than somewhat belabored text descriptions. But overall, "Safe Food" is an important and timely book, and one well worth reading by anyone concerned about the quality of the food we eat.
Excellent.......2003-07-27
"Safe Food" is a terrific look at the issues involved in keeping our food supply uncontaminated. It is also a look behind the scenes at how our democracy really works, and it's not a pretty sight. Corporations choosing profits over public health, government representatives more often than not siding with industry rather than consumers, corruption, greed, and ineptitude are all part of this fascinating story. Highly recommended!
more questions raised about the author's intentions.......2003-06-08
I just heard Marion Nestle on the Mike McConnell raido show. All I could ask myself during the interview was, "What are her intentions in writing this book." All I could think of during the interview was she was another Rachel Carson writing her "Silent Spring".
My general impression was that she wrote this book to create fear in the food consumer, but never really offered any solutions except more government intrusion. She never presented, in the interview, the fault of the consumer in poor preparation practices or lack of control when eating out.
In Nestle's view its either "big" business' fault by being cheapskates or the government's failure by not legislating.
Yes I believe that there needs to be safeguards, but I also believe that regulations can become so excessive that it could become not profitable to produce food products. That is why there should be a certain amount of responsibility by the consumer (i.e. don't eat tuna fish that's been sitting out in the sun for a few hours).
In the interview of besides presenting herself as a prophet of doom, I also found her to be very condescending to people who challenged her opinions.
If you want to read her work, I can only recommend reading this with a very critical eye.

Finally, a great way to teach children about the environment!.......2006-03-08
Wow - this book was a big surprise. It was something that my kids had picked out at the library, and now we are planning to buy our own copy. With it's main character, Slobosaurus, showing children (and adults too) how we take our environment for granted, the lessons of the simple ways to correct this are great for children ages 4-8 (and even up through adults). Kids learn everything from not wasting paper to recycling to the fact that 1 gallon of water is used every minute that it is left running. The illustrations are great and only add to the book. This book is a great asset to any children's collection!

Totally useless environmentalist rant.......2003-01-25
The author begins his rant by contrasting a lush forest scene with a paper mill that "uses up more than a million tons of wood every year." Note to author: What do you think your book is printed on? Plastic? And by the way, it's not printed on recycled paper. I looked. Next readers are treated to sections titled:
soil erosion
farm alarm
habitats at risk
forest crisis
fire alert
animals in danger
people pressure
wasteful world
filthy fuel
Really uplifting stuff. My kids find the book to be utterly boring.
Much of the blame is put on global warming and the book is full of dire (but refutable) statistics. The book mentioned the end of the ice age 20,000 years ago and the fact that the earth has been steadily warming ever since then. The fact that it may still be warming as part of that trend is not mentioned.
Anyway, the sales rank on this book is well over 700,000, meaning that other buyers have recognized this book for what it is and avoided it. I, unfortunately, was not so wise and it cost me money which, by the way, is also printed on paper. Don't make the same mistake I did. Don't buy this book. Conserve your paper.
