Officers' Guide.......2007-06-27
I have been using the 3rd edition since 1972. The 6th edition by Lieutenant Colonel Estes is a tremendous improvement though Chapter 22 Marine Corps Social Life is still antiquated and reeks of the 19th Century. I did not observe the use of calling cards once in my thirty year career.
Marine Officer's Guide.......2005-09-22
I accepted my commission this summer and found this book helpful because it addressed some of the customs and history of the United States Marine Corps all in one location. The book is well organized and each chapter can be read on its own. Good overview of the basics. The history portion is superficial. I'm wondering if a more recent edition should be available since this book is several years old.
Yes.......2004-12-24
First Off i am going to go to the Naval Academy, and i will stop at nothing to get accepted. I hope that by having read this book, i will be more prepared to go to annapolis and eventually become an officer in the marines. This book answers everything i could have asked and more. In summary, if you have big goals, this book will help you achieve them.
A great tool for non-Marines, too........2000-11-14
I imagine this book to be an invaluable resource for serving USMC officers, whether fresh out of The Basic School or with many years of service. But it has another use too: as a guide to the Corps for future Marines, and for non-Marines like me.
At first blush, much of the information in this book may seem obscure or even irrelevant for people not making a career in the Marine Corps: information about personnel folders and fitness reports, how to apply for and receive transit insurance, or how to render salutes when small boats pass close aboard. But even in these details, a sense of what it means to be a Marine comes through loud and clear.
For a non-Marine, the real value of this volume lies in two areas: (1) its explanations of the history and traditions of the Corps (Marines are often said to be the most history-conscious of all the services), and (2) the explanation of the role the Corps plays in America's military machine, including how the Corps is structured, trained, stationed, and led.
Non-Marines can also find much merit in the sections on the attributes of a leader, dealing with subordinates, the useful, if somewhat brief, bibliography, and the glossary of common USMC terms and slang.
If you are, or plan to be, a Marine officer, absolutely read this book.
If you're not a Marine, but are interested in the Corps, its history or its present functions, I recommend this guide very highly.
At one point, the author quotes General John A. Lejeune: 'The future success of the Marine Corps depends on two factors: first, an efficient performance of all the duties to which its officers and men may be assigned; second, promptly bringing this efficiency to the attention of the proper officials of the Government, and the American people.' LtCol Estes admirably succeeds in 'bringing this efficiency to the proper attention' of any civilian interested enough in the Corps to pick up this most valuable book.
If you are or are going to become a Marine Officer, get this.......2000-01-31
This book which is written by retired Lt. Col. Kenneth W. Estes(who also wrote the Handbook for Marine NCOs)is filled with things officers should know. I am sure some of the stuff is taught at OCS and TBS, but some probably isn't. Has chapters like History, Traditions, Bases and Stations, Pay, Sea Service, Marine Corps Reserve, Leadership, Arriving at Your First Assignment, Personal Administration and Affairs, Social Life, Military Justice, and others. Its hardcover, and just shy of 500 pages. I personally liked the section that describes your typical career pattern as an officer.

Book Description
This handbook addresses every aspect of a watchstander's duties at sea and in port. A classic reference of the profession since its initial publication in 1911, the guide is a compendium of information and wisdom contributed by hundreds of naval officers and mariners over the past eighty years. For watch officers beginning their training, the book provides an abundance of useful, up-to-date information. For experienced watch officers, it is handy both for general review and for use while actually standing watch.
The revised edition offers much new material, including sessions on standing watch in the combat information center, training, and engineering, and a quick-reference guide filled with the shiphandler's tricks of the trade. Other material has been brought into line with current practice. No officer who stands watch at sea or in port should be without this useful volume.

Book Description
This is a home study guide to prepare for the Coast Guard's two most popular captain's ratings: (1) the six-passenger or charterboat license, and (2) the 100-ton Merchant Marine Masters license for sightseeing, whalewatching, and fishing head boats. Will need to be updated every two years.

Terrific Book.......2006-07-24
This text is great and the CD-ROM which lets u take and review practice tests may even better. I was surprised at the effectiveness of the text. All the material was presented in sufficient detail to answer your questions, but no not so detailed as to be burdensome as a college degree. The end result for me was a perfect score on all four sections of the test, but I took a LOT of practice tests. YOU NEED THIS BOOK & CD!
Get Your Captain's License, Third Edition.......2005-10-09
This new 3rd edition is better than the fist two. It is not a complete guide to all you need to learn to test for a USCG License, but it is a good base. There are still a few corrections needed in the rules that should have been updated for this 3rd edition and not all the study text agrees with the USCG questions. The CD tests is okay for review and gives a good feel of what needs to be studiedfor the USCG exams. Over all makes a great referance and should help anyone looking for a lower level license.
Get Your Captain's License Ed. 3.......2004-10-15
I received this volume in the mail about two weeks ago and have been hard at work using it to prepare for my exam. While not yet licensed, I have boated and sailed much of my life and am familiar with most of the material in it already.
The new edition is quite thorough. It not only presents all the questions, but has substantial guides preceding each section to help you understand the principles, which I find to be the most helpful feature of all. The volume's only weakness is it is written in a very dry, technical manner making it somewhat laborious to read. Also, if you are not already familiar with some of the concepts, you need to read more basic, outside resources to prepare you to study them in this book, otherwise it will leave you behind. However, if you are not familiar with the material in this text, you probably should not be applying for licensure yet either.
Finally, the new version of the software is very good. It still does not offer to test on the navigation problems. The author correctly states it cannot do this because one cannot plot with compass and parallel ruler from charts on a computer screen. However, I wish the software offered the tests anyway so that I could at least put my answers down and have it confirm them. It would just be more convenient for practicing.

Don't be tempted by the included CD.......2003-04-07
The software not only is simplistic, but also is unstable.
A Good Start.......2003-01-08
No single text is going to allow you to ace the test, but this should be one of the ones you use. This is the second edition and supposedly updated as of 2000. While much of the information is available on the Coast Guard web site, Wing does a good job of "packaging it" to make it much more readable. I found the light and signal summaries worth the price of the book. Without these two summaries, memorization of the many, many lights and signals would be much harder. Another plus is a "plain english" version as well as the original rules - much more readable and easier to learn.

Excellent for Maritime Intel Ops.......2004-11-01
This book was originally intended for preparing enlisted members of the seagoing community to transition into the officers' corps, and for that purpose it is an excellent work. However, because there is very little written specifically for maritime intelligence operations, this volume may fill the gap. For those interested in specializing in maritime intelligence operations it would be wise to learn as much as possible about shipboard procedures.
Proper shipboard operations follow a very strict regimen. Therefore, any deviance from what would be seen as normal should send up red flags. Watchstanding Guide for the Merchant Officer is packed full of forms, examples, and procedures that should be a formal part of every ship's operation. During a boarding, or any subsequent investigation, if the investigator doesn't see documentation very similar to that depicted in this work then something is amiss. For those monitoring a ship's movement from an office location, the normal actions for the vessel and crew should be easily visualized after reading this book.
It is a sad state of affairs when there are so many `area experts' that have never set foot within the country of their 'expertise'. The same holds true for the maritime intelligence officer, who has little or no time at sea. There is no substitute for experience, but I do recommend this book as an excellent reader for a maritime intelligence course.
Excellent Book.......2000-12-08
This book is a must for the active sailing Merchant Mariner. Meurn has combined his wealth of stories, pratical knowledge, and years of experience. His telling of the horrors of "that first watch" is familar to any officer. This book has served as an excellent text for ship simulator courses, and it provides the mariner with pratical watchstanding procedures.

MANY FACTS BUT FEW EXPLANATIONS.......2005-10-14
Wistrich is certainly correct in calling Antisemitism the longest hatred. Almost every culture, from ancient times to the present, has been infected with this philosophy. His book covers its history from Biblical times to the late 20th Century. The first two thirds look at Europan and western attitudes, and how they contributed to the holocaust and have changed since World War II. The final third examines the Islamic world and the present conflict over Israel. This last section is in many ways the most interesting, as it covers material many in the West may be less familiar with.
The greatest weakness here is that while the author gives us many facts, he offers very little in the way of explanation. We learn almost nothing about why antisemitism has been so prevelant or so intense, or why, like a natural disaster, it flares up in cycles every so often. No one expects Wistrich to have the final answer here, but he should have made at least some attempt to discover the reasons for the 'longest hatred'.
A scholarly study of Anti- Semitism .......2005-02-03
This is a very learned and convincing study of the history of Anti- Semitism. It is especially illuminating in its understanding of the new anti- Semitism which has come to the Islamic world. The bulk of the book however is devoted to European anti-Semitism and its disastrous culmination in Nazism. Wistrich is a very thorough and broad- ranging scholar and he writes with brilliance about one of the most recurrent evils in the life of mankind.
A Hatred Still Very Much Alive & Well On Planet Earth........2003-01-22
This is an excellent study based on extensive, thorough research of both ancient and modern-day anti-Semitism that destroys any myth that anti-Semitism is now on the decline.
Introducing the definition of anti-Semitism as the hatred of Jews & Judaism (and not Semites in general), the writer displays a commendable knowledge of the subject while devoting a sizeable section of this book to revealing and analysing the re-emergence & immediacy of the virulent, racial hatred revived by the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
Many readers will find this book both painful and shocking. The writer approaching the many aspects of anti-Semitism through the ages, not least of which being those originating through some aspects of 'Christianity', which were subsequently adopted by Nazism, Bolshevism and Islam. Certain revealed myths shown to provide the seedbed on which Nazi and other racialist doctrines/prejudices could flourish, dehumanising Jews & subsequently removing all/any moral restraints that opposed a persecution or genocide of the Jewish people.
The book examines the erroneous, malignant myths like 'The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion', (of which the Arab world is now the largest supplier), and how these have now taken root in the Middle East as another Islamic weapon against the Jewish State.
The writer declaring that, despite being an absolute tissue of malicious lies, wherever there is a 'will' to believe such aberrations, events can always be made to fit the paranoid visions & homicidal hatred of a Jewish 'world conspiracy'.
A whole section of the book is devoted to Jews living in Islamic lands & the question of 'Palestine'. Of particular note here is the revelation that the enforced wearing of the 'Yellow Badge' by Jews actually originated in Baghdad and not Europe. The 'dhimmi' status of Jews under Islamic rule is also studied, together with the post 1948 enforced expulsion of the Jewish populations from these Arab lands, together with the confiscation of all Jewish property.
The author also describes how in recent years a vast anti-Jewish literature has appeared in Islamic/Arab countries, using theological, racial and 'demonological' motifs to vilify the Jews, including the revival of the 'blood libel' and the promotion of an image portraying Israel as a ruthless, oppressive nation . (Aryeh Stav's book "Peace; The Arabian Caricature" admirably covers this subject.). Anti-Jewish ideologies constantly being disseminated through books, newspapers, caricatures, radio and television, subsequently reaching mass audiences with this indoctrination.
The complicity of the Arab world and the Mufti in Hitler's Holocaust is also discussed along with the Palestinian National Covenant. The latter, which has still not been rescinded, containing a basic premise which demands within nearly half of it's 33 articles, that the State of Israel must cease to exist.
The present situation in the Middle East relating to the 'peace process' is also expounded with reference to the anti-Semitic diatribes within the International arena and the UN. In view of the study here, I cannot help but recall the statement of previous UN Secretary General Boutros-Gali which showed the real position of the UN;- "The Jews must give up their status as a nation and Israel as a state, and assimilate as a community in the Arab world."
Indeed, this essential study reveals that there is an underlying, universal precept at work pertaining to the Jews and the Middle East itself. I do not believe it is a desire for peace, but it is the distaste for the Jewish state. No other nation in the World is or has been treated in this way.
I concur with what the author I believe is trying to convey within his discourse about the Islamic/Arab towards Israel, in that the issue here is not 'land for peace'! It is the very existence of the Jewish state in the land of 'Islam' in the Middle East that is the issue. An existence that will never be accepted by the Moslem world, irrespective of any boundaries.
To elaborate slightly, when the Arab world demands a 'just peace', it is saying in effect that 'peace' can only come when Israel no longer exists and there are 'JUST' Arab nations in the Middle East. Perhaps readers will make up their own minds on this. This is one of the best works on anti-Semitism that I have come across to date and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Book Description
This monograph explores the geometry of the local Langlands conjecture. The conjecture predicts a parametrizations of the irreducible representations of a reductive algebraic group over a local field in terms of the complex dual group and the Weil-Deligne group. For p-adic fields, this conjecture has not been proved; but it has been refined to a detailed collection of (conjectural) relationships between p-adic representation theory and geometry on the space of p-adic representation theory and geometry on the space of p-adic Langlands parameters.
In the case of real groups, the predicted parametrizations of representations was proved by Langlands himself. Unfortunately, most of the deeper relations suggested by the p-adic theory (between real representation theory and geometry on the space of real Langlands parameters) are not true. The purposed of this book is to redefine the space of real Langlands parameters so as to recover these relationships; informally, to do "Kazhdan-Lusztig theory on the dual group". The new definitions differ from the classical ones in roughly the same way that Deligneâs definition of a Hodge structure differs from the classical one.
This book provides and introduction to some modern geometric methods in representation theory. It is addressed to graduate students and research workers in representation theory and in automorphic forms.
