Book Description
ed Handy was captured by Germans in April 1944, after his B-24 was shot down. Sent to Stalag 17, the infamous Nazi prison camp, Handy soon led an escape team determined to tunnel to freedom. Along with the unforgettable comrades he vividly describes, Handy worked relentlessly for months on a tunnel that was to prove instrumental in saving the lives of four fugitives sought by the Gestapo. One of those fugitives would become the only American ever to escape permanently from Stalag 17. The Flame Keepers is a vivid first-hand account of an American soldier's experience as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany and a poignant portrait of the POWs who worked to survive within the wire and their German captors. Illustrated with original photographs taken inside the camp from a smuggled camera and published for the first time in the trade press, The Flame Keepers recounts one of World War II's great untold stories.
Customer Reviews:
Reading it was like Dad telling me about the whole ordeal.......2007-08-15
My Dad was a POW in Stalag 17 during the same period of time as Handy. Dad had a hard time of it and it really was difficult for him to talk much about it. I now know that it would have been much better for him, and us, if he had been able to talk about it. He died in 2004.
Many of the things he did tell me in bits and pieces over the years about his experiences Handy described also. The Kregie who killed imself by deliberately crossing over 'the wire', the tunneling efforts, the dirt in the rafters, the sawdust bread, the interrogations, solitary, the bunks, the cold, the hunger, the frightened guards, the end in the forest. Lot and lots of pieces of the puzzle.
Dad was a most devout Catholic and, as it turned out, the only prisoner in camp who had been trained to be an Altar Boy. He gave lessions in Latin to train many other prisoners who were 'getting religion' in those desperate times. Dad described the Christams Mass in great detail, and it was striking to read Handy's account of that sermon. It was erie to read Handy's account of it all and how identical it was to Dad's. It was a very uplifting sermon that Dad and Handy never forgot.
My Mother told me about this book and I ordered it immediatly from Amazon and couldn't put it down until I had read all the way through. It was as if Dad was sitting in the room and describing the whole horror, step by step, and in chronological sequence for the first time which enabled me to put it all together for the first time. Now I have an even deeper understanding and appreciation for what Dad had endured, and how tragic his ongoing suffering had been, what it meant for his life, how much he had sacrificed, not only for those 16 months as a POW - but throughout the remainder of his life. I also got some insights regarding how it impacted mine life and my family's. I wish Dad could have read it him self 50 years ago. Thanks, Ned for getting it out for all of us to understand.
If you have any POWs in your immediate family, especially if that POW is or was your father - or you were a POW and you have children, I would say that this is required reading.
A worthy read.......2007-05-21
Loved this book. It grabbed my attention from the very start and never let it drift...housework and commitments be damned! Knowing it was a true story made it all the more gripping. I highly recommend it.
A true and accurate account.......2007-02-03
One of the heroes in this book, Gene Meese, is a friend of mine. He no longer talks much about his war experiences but he does say that Ned Handy tells the story with great accuracy. Oh, sure, much was omitted -- some of it quite bad -- but the core and substance is there and treated well.
Knowing Gene and reading the book deepened my appreciation for all the terror our troops, past and present, have endured for our country.
Incredible Tale of Successful Ingenuity, Perseverance, Courage.......2005-08-04
It is not hyperbole to say that The Flame Keepers is an excellent, well-paced book that will captivate readers of all ages and backgrounds - from teens to seasoned citizens. Not only about World War II, or even strictly a "war story," the book covers the effects on human behavior of war, imprisonment and defiance of one's enemies -- all well beyond the armored battles that raged.
Author and protagonist Ned Handy tells the unvarnished story through his eyes of a network of men and comrades-at-arms whose sudden imprisonment brought out their individual and collective ingenuity, bravery, stamina and perseverance in ways they could not have imagined. These qualities possessed by so many "ordinary" sergeants came to the fore when they faced the stark choice of surviving or giving up behind a wire, while watched by armed guards, deep in enemy territory, and in spite of brutal weather and a starvation diet. The incredible story of a brash and brilliantly conceived escape attempt from Stalag Luft XVII-B plays a major part in the narrative, and it is spell-binding.
Mr. Handy employs simple but eloquent language that takes the reader on a hard-to-put-down journey through five seasons in the life of a 21-year-old B-24 flight engineer and top turret gunner, who survives a shoot-down only to be imprisoned in infamous Stalag XVII-B. Events inside Stalag 17 are interwoven with interesting vignettes that bring to life Mr. Handy's memories of home, family and early life, which inform his ability to survive the prison ordeal. He ascribes well-deserved credit to his colleagues, from his crewmates to POWs with whom he lived in extremely close quarters for more than a year. He describes how each POW used the talents he had to their utmost, such that they were able to survive, defy the enemy at times, and create a vital internal safety net for their fellows when it mattered most. For a man imprisoned and isolated for a time due to circumstances that are movingly presented in the text, Mr. Handy presents a fair-minded view of the individual human beings behind the generic descriptors, "soldier," "prisoner," "enemy," "guard," and "civilian."
It is easy to get "lost" while reading this book, and is a challenge to return, during the intervals one puts it down, to the regular and occasionally mundane tasks of everyday living. For it is the ability to do these tasks, and to take advantage of all the small and large freedoms we have today, that was denied the prisoners of war like Mr. Handy and those whom he describes so vividly. And although the author doesn't indulge in self-praise, the reader cannot help but thank God for stalwart men like Mr. Handy and his comrades, who sacrificed so much for the liberty and prosperity we all enjoy today. It's a must-read for all ages.
Up Close and Personal View of Stalag 17.......2005-01-05
I am a WWII buff as I know had it not been for those who served we would not be here. So reading and appreciating those sacrifices is paramount to me.
I found this book "disturbing" (in a good way) in that the book literally took the reader inside the walls of Stalag 17.
It was a fearful experience and filled me with dread and agony for those who lived through that experience.
Some of the material mirrows what the movie "Stalag 17" depicted but certainly not with the Hollywood context of stalag life.
Ned Handy is one of countless heros who served all of us. God bless them, each and every one.
This is a book to cherish and help us understand the horror of war and the sacrifices of so many.

Great listening!.......2006-05-03
Handy does a great job of bringing the listener into his WWII experiences as a prisoner of war in Stalig 17. Honest, articulate, interesting, comprehensive. His writing style is absorbing. If you have to stop listening, you'll look forward to the time you can return to it. The voice inflections of the reader takes a little getting used to, but the content will soon overcome this initial distraction and leave you anxious to return to Handy's world.

Book Description
On a stormy night in September 1934, the Morro Castle was making its way through heavy seas en route from Havana to New York City. Shortly after 2:00 A.M., while most of the passengers slept, fire suddenly engulfed the luxury liner; within an hour, hundreds were dead or struggling desperately in the water.
The fire's apparently inexplicable outbreak wasn't the only secret that night aboard the Morro Castle. Hours earlier, Captain Robert Wilmott had died in his cabin under suspicious circumstances. Had Wilmott been poisoned? Was the fire accidental, or intentionally set? Drawing from interviews with the survivors, as well as his own in-depth research, Thomas Gallagher skillfully recreates the Morro Castle tragedy, proposing convincing solutions to its myriad mysteries.
In FIRE AT SEA, originally published in 1959, a seasoned reporter's meticulous attention to detail is combined with a novelist's sense of his story's drama. The result is a vivid and unforgettable story of the sea.

Tragedy at Sea.......2007-09-02
This book is well written and the facts are correct as I have read other books on the Morro Castle. Gave this book as a gift to a relative and he has enjoyed it very much. Highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This book describes for the first time how Monte Carlo modeling methods can be applied to electron microscopy and microanalysis. Computer programs for two basic types of Monte Carlo simulation are developed from physical models of the electron scattering process--a single scattering program capable of high accuracy but requiring long computation times, and a plural scattering program which is less accurate but much more rapid. Optimized for use on personal computers, the programs provide a real time graphical display of the interaction. The programs are then used as the starting point for the development of programs aimed at studying particular effects in the electron microscope, including backscattering, secondary electron production, EBIC and cathodo-luminescence imaging, and X-ray microanalysis. The computer code is given in a fully annotated format so that it may be readily modified for specific problems. Throughout, the author includes numerous examples of how such applications can be used. Students and professionals using electron microscopes will want to read this important addition to the literature.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to Monte Carlo technique in SEM.......2006-08-31
This book provides a good introduction into Monte Carlo simulation for so-called microbeam analysis.
I read this book to start up my work on image formation of scanning electron microscopy. This book was really useful to understand how the Monte Carlo technique could be realized in my lap-top.
Although the author provides a complete set of PASCAL codes,
it was not difficult to convert them into C/C++ based my programming codes.
This book contains many references, mainly journal papers.
So advanced modificaion may require ones to read these articles.
But without this kind of text book,
the analysis by Monte Carlo technique would be more difficult.
To understand the physical background of electron transport in a specimen,
I recommend to read SEM text books by Reimer or by Goldstein et al.

Still Strippin' After 25 Years.......2007-10-01
This is an excellent book for beginners and experts as well! Eleanor is such a lovable and knowledgeable teacher that anyone could learn to quilt with her! The little stories she tells make the quilts so special that you feel you know her like a next door neighbor!
Not really a better idea...........2007-09-27
As many people have said, the book gives measurements for several sizes of quilts and while that is very helpful, it gets tiring having to go back to the pages to see which size piece you need. After giving you this information and allowing you to precut all of your pieces, she really ought to refer to the sizes of the piece in the instructions, ie: Using the 2 1/2" Star Point strips... do this.... I found it distracting to have to go back to those pages and hunt for the description of the piece I needed. Also... the corners on one quilt don't work out as well as you would believe from the instructions in the book, I spent about two hours trying in vain to get nice flat seems from a point that had eight pieces of fabric joining together.
Still Stripping After 25 Years.......2007-09-05
Eleanor Burns writes wonderful, easy to follow, quilt books. This book is no exception. The patterns are written for beginners and advanced quilters alike. She is entertaining, as well as being a great teacher. I would personally like to have all of her books.
Eleanor Burns.......2007-08-23
Love the quilt-in-a-day books. Eleanor Burns always makes all the directions so easy to follow. Can't wait to get started on my next project!
Great for beginners!.......2007-03-15
I am new to quilting and my mother-in-law suggested this book to me. It's wonderful! It begins by describing all the tools essential to quilting then moves right in to how to begin. The books progresses with more and more difficult patterns. The illustrations are beautiful and the instructions are simple. Perfect!
Customer Reviews:
Very Funny book, but didn't agree with all advice! .......2007-10-17
I haven't quite read all of this book yet, but what I have read so far is that this author is funny and it is a good read for any bride to be! It will still be something to read after you are married too. I did not like the author assuming that all women have sex before marriage--I am a virgin and plan to be until my wedding day. That was so ridiculous! So, her advice on sex was a little off to me. Anyway, the rest of the book had some good things on switching from being single to married and how to keep up with friends, etc. I will read those parts again to know where to go. Also, I didn't exactly like her part about starting a family. I am Christian/Catholic and we just believe God is part of the say on starting a family. Sometimes your will isn't his and vice versa. I don't believe in any "birth control" and I think the author was on verge of saying this is OK--it is not according to my belief system and I was offended.
All for now.
Decent Read.......2007-08-28
It's an interesting read, but it's definitely geared towards a specific demographic of brides. Any bride that hasn't lived as a single woman on her own for a good amount of time will find this book interesting but not extremely helpful. Still, the author is witty and the book is an easy read.
Tedious and biased.......2007-07-23
I hate to be the lone dissenter, but this book really didn't help me sort out my pre-wedding thoughts. A few months before my wedding, I began to feel somewhat nervous about leaving my single life behind and "becoming another person." I bought this book hoping that it would offer advice and some reassurance that my feelings were shared by other brides.
While it did indeed indicate that my sudden identity concerns were common, I found that most of Stark's advice was based on her own marriage, with a few tidbits thrown in from a few interviews she had done with several young brides--although most of it is common sense. I found myself often thinking that I was reading Stark's autobiography.
That said, it does have some good pointers and a few good stories that a lot of brides can relate to.
Great Book !.......2007-04-04
I am a 40ish bride-to-be and I learned a lot from this book. It's not only advice about weddings, etc., but a really deep look at some serious issues that arise in relationship. Thanks Marg.
Excellent advice and a must-read for newlyweds.......2006-10-24
Someone once said that "When the Wedding March fades and the cake is in crumbs, what you have left is a marriage." There are plenty of books out there for how to plan a wedding, but few to help on the morning after. This practical advice for beginning your marriage and surviving the transition to spouse is both entertaining AND informative. Would make a great gift for a newlywed, or good class reading for those in premarital counseling.

Book Description
"A compelling blend of science, history and storytelling. Barbara Ravage has fashioned an enlightening, invaluable book." -Stewart O'Nan, author of The Circus Fire: A True Story of an American Tragedy Though each of us is just a spark away from being a burn victim, the public knows little and understands less about the world that patients inhabit. Pulling the curtains back on this private and sterile environment, Burn Unit is a riveting account of the frontline efforts-both modern-day and historical-to save lives devastated by fire. With unflinching urgency, Barbara Ravage follows an extraordinary team of healers at Massachusetts General Hospital, the cradle of modern burn treatment and the site of one of the best burn units in the world. From Boston's Cocoanut Grove fire of 1942 to the treatment of the victims of the Rhode Island nightclub fire in early 2003, we watch everyday heroes do their incredible but punishing work against the backdrop of history. Both a moving human drama and an engrossing scientific exploration of this little-known field of medicine, Burn Unit is an unforgettably powerful read.
Customer Reviews:
Five Stars if you are wanting specifically to learn about burns, three stars if you are a fan of medical non-fiction.......2006-05-15
I'll start out here by saying that I am a medical non-fic junkie. I have read just about every medical narrative non-fiction book to come out in the last five years, and I am simply intrigued with the behind the scenes look at what goes on in hospitals and in the minds of doctors and nurses. I was in the hospital a lot as a teen and I think that is where my interest started.
So I am not coming from a place of particular interest in burns, more from a general medical interest standpoint. If you are specifically interested in learning about what goes on in a burn unit or what goes on in a patient's body after they are burned, then this is an amazing book. It is very informative. The author talks about historical fires and how they contributed to medical knowledge about burns, the physiological changes that occur in a human's body after becoming burned, and the medical treatment. She also personalizes the burn unit by showing actual people who suffered a burn and showing their progress.
But for me, coming from the perspective of wanting a thrilling and informative non-fiction read about the medical field (like Hot Lights, Cold Steel by Collins), this didn't fit the bill. The historical and informative parts that told us about advances in the burn field and what happens physiologically were too dry to hold my attention without having any specific reason to learn about them, and the people she profiled didn't capture my heart and interest.
So, if you are looking for a general interest read that will capture your attention even with no particular interest in the field, look elsewhere, but if you have experiences with burns or are a doctor, then this is a really interesting and informative read. It is gory in parts, so be warned.
Burn Unit.......2005-11-09
This book is exceptional. It goes into details and explains what happens to the burn victim's body and why it happens. I would recommend this book to medical students...but is also a good read to those not in the medical field. It has a story like flow and is presented in a very interesting way that captures your attention.
An inside look at a place we hope we'll never see..........2005-11-09
Before reading this,I knew very little about burns and burn care, other than they were messy, smelly, painful and left terrible scars. This book covers the burn treatment floor, Bigelow 13, at Mass General, one of the best burn units in the country. Very informative, if a little boring in places. At times, the author goes into long biological speeches about layers of skin and how they regrow and blah blah blah blah blah . It can read like a high school anatomy book- not exactly something that captures one's attention for long periods of time. But the rest of it- the explanation of procedures, case histories and daily routines of a burn unit- was fascinating.
Recommended, but get some coffee for the slow parts, and DO NOT eat while reading this book.
The many case histories personalize the entire experience.......2005-10-05
It's grueling work caring for victims who wind up in a burn unit: work author Barbara Ravage examines as she follows the Mass General health team working in the hospital's burn unit. Here are touching stories of victims severely burned, medical teams which care for them through a difficult recovery process, and insights into the latest advances in rehabilitation and treatment. The many case histories personalize the entire experience.
FROM A BURN PATIENT'S SPOUSE TO ANYONE.......2005-09-27
On August 3, my wife was burned in central Anatolia. On August 15, we med-vaced her to the United States. On September 1, I bought this book. On September 20, I received the book. I was so rapt by the writing that I finished this book in two days. Understand, my wife was in the hospital at the time. Reading was not a priority. I visited my wife daily while I ran a family and my own business.
Sometimes a writer's capabilities can so overwhelm the topic. A good writer can make the worst topics readable. Burns, sores, sepsis, pain, and scars are what I neither care to read about nor wish others to read about. The sterile black ink on the white pages cannot deliver the sensations to you of the stench associated with the dead skin, nor show you the grotesque complexity of the red and yellow skin which bleeds easily and often.
I no more would ask a person to experience what my family has lived the past few months, than I would ask them to clean my plumbing. Burns are a horrible topic which Ms. Ravage has managed to make less horrible.
I used this book for something more than enjoyment. The doctors' mouths, often as clasped as the arteries of their surgical patients, tell little to the patients' family, and when they speak, the language is too often cliched with inexplicables and nondeterminatives. This book answered questions, told me what to look forward to, and outlined what to anticipate. This was my "Burn Patients' Questions for Dummies." But, written well.
I cringed. I cried. I swallowed hard. And, at times, I had to leave the book. The writng and insight were as razor sharp as the scalpels discussed and referenced in the portion discussing grafting.
Good work Ms. Ravage! You helped a great deal. I can only tell others in my predicament, read this book. And, after you read the book, you will feel better about what there is looming in the slowly progressing and little discussed world of burns.

A Work of Genius.......2004-08-25
Gosetti-Ferencei's poetry is sterling: luminescent, pure, and honest; for the thinker it utters what needs to be said in a classical poetic style. This book should be in every private library.
simply stunning.......2004-06-02
This book makes me love poetry. It is so loving and sad and precise. It is unparaphraseable. It is sweeping and minute at the same time. There is little more I can say except: get this book. You will love it.
Gorgeous........2004-02-24
I picked up this book in passing while purchasing some other, more publicized, titles. This one blew the others away. There is a quiet sense of formality, even in the lyrics, that draws you into the rhythm of the book--it is easy to to read from beginning to end and feel as though you've been carried along by the work's momentum. Erudite, but never difficult or without grace, the poems invite readers to notice the delicate intermingling of the world we observe and the worlds we imagine.
There is a haunting aesthetic power at work, culmintating in the sequence "A Realm of Vague Delights." The images stay with you:
"...a lady found entangled in the weeds,/while sky is darkening, and gulls have flown/and salt is blowing through the corridor" (Wedding Night for the Count of Sand).
"My table's plates disheveled, wine-soaked bread,/then open sky, the stars, oracular,/envelop night, and then the morning's fruit,/at breakfast, humming with a subtle fall" (The King as Concubine).
Simply the best poems I have read in ages.
Sublime.......2004-01-27
In Gosetti-Ferencei's immensely intelligent first book, the poems enter a Europe of the past and the imagination, a lost Europe, with its dead masters and decaying masterpieces, indeed its burnt palaces, its faded philosophers. Yet the poems' elegiac landscape thrives with a vitality drawn from the sublime
beauties of nature and the intricate forms of poetry itself (sonnets abound in the book, among other examples of Gosetti-Fercenei's prosodic virtuosity). From its first lovely lyric, through its dark and masterful sequences, to its final embrace of life ("More light!" Goethe is claimed to have cried at his
death), After the Palace Burns proves that "joy, though strained, is undeniable."

Book Description
In the euphoric aftermath of 1989's history-making events, the fall of the Berlin Wall and Soviet Union, reviewers heralded Francis Fukuyama's national bestseller "The End of History and the Last Man" as "the first book to fully fathom the depth and range of the changes now sweeping through the world." In "After History?", 13 critics from across the political spectrum offer provocative responses to Fukuyama's bold declaration that democracy and capitalism have triumphed over totalitarianism and socialism. Fukuyama responds directly to his critics in a concluding chapter.

Good Book, But Cheats.......2006-02-18
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the fast pace and chilling story, I was struck by how this book completely disregards the most fundamental rule in mystery stories: giving readers enough clues (no matter how twisted or incidental) to actually solve the crime on their own. I can't say more without spoiling the end of the novel, but I think this book would have made for a more satisfying read had the author played a little more fairly with her audience. As it is, I would highly recommend this book as a good horror novel, but not as a mystery.
Fun To Read.......2003-07-12
This book, written in 1914, is great fun to read. The plot is relatively simple and the number of suspects limited. What adds to the fun are the mores of the early 20th century and how they differ from our own.
Chilling.......1999-12-16
This was the first book I ever read by Ms. Rinehart and it was a thrilling surprise. It would make an excellent film. The novel takes place on a ship where an axe murderer is on the loose and it has remnants of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Was None" It's a quick, exciting read and I highly recommend it.
