Writings of Sun Tzu, Vegetius, Marshal Maurice de Saxe, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon
Customer Reviews:
Good collection.......2007-01-13
A very helpful collection of military philosophies. Sun Tzu, Vegetius, De Saxe, Frederick, and Napolean. A brief biography of each author is also provided with some background on their works. A must have for the military thinker. The translations of De Saxe and Sun Tzu alone are worth the price.
Interesting Book for Strategists and Moms - a review of "Roots of Strategy".......2006-07-25
I am quite enjoying this book and thought I'd give a little bit more information on it so that you can decide whether to fork over your hard earned cash. This book is part of a series and Volume One contains treatises by the following authors:
Sun Tzu
Vegetius
De Saxe
Frederick
Napoleon
Besides the treatises themselves there is an "Editors Foreword" which gives a brief two-page history of how these works fit historically into the literature of warfare.
There is also a synopsis of the contents which lists each work individually. Additional information is provided here as well. For example the synopsis for the "Art of War" states, amongst other things, that it was written about 500 B.C. And that it is still held in reverence today (as of 1940 A.D.) in China and Japan.
But what is really useful and wonderful are the thoughtful introductions to each work. For instance, we are told in the introduction of "De Re Militari" that even as late as the 15th Century that there were as many as 150 extant manuscripts. (A huge number in historical terms.) He goes on to say something about Vegetius, Emperor Valentianian (to whom the book was dedicated), and the Roman Empire.
In addition -- and this is the part I found well worthwhile -- the editor explains how the popularity and usefulness of the strategy went in and out of favor as technology changed. He writes:
"It is a paradox the De Re Militari, which was to become a military bible for innumerable generations of European soldiers, was little used by the Romans for whom it was written."
Also,
"Cavalry had adopted the armor of the foot soldier and was just commencing to become the principal arm of the military forces. The heavy armed foot-soldier, formerly the backbone of the legion, was falling a victim of his own weight and immobility, and the light-armed infantry, unable to resist the shock of cavalry, was turning more and more to missile weapons. By one of the strange mutations of history, when later the cross-bow and gun-powder deprived cavalry of its shock-power, the tactics of Vegetius again became ideal for armies....
For someone like me who is not a military expert, this sort of information allows me to understand how the advice was used by others in later centuries.
Four Stars. [B+]. Interesting material with valuable editorial commentary. Minus points for the fact that some material from the originals has been omitted. The editor notes that it was of little interest, but I'd rather make that decision myself.
The clearest translation of Sun Tzu's The Art of War........1999-09-11
Firstly, I've read many versions of The Art of War by Sun Tzu and they all seemed to be translated by someone with Chinese as their native language, rather than English. This translation is as clear as they get. Napoleon's maxims are short and sweet. The other works contained herein are also easy to read and are packed with simple, eternal principles of warfare.

Culture and Values: A Survey of the Western Humanities.......2000-07-21
This is a very good book for introducing students to art, literature and music from the beginning of the Renaissance until the 1990s. Many illustrations are included which help the reader comprehend what the text is saying about works of art. Selections from works of writers studied are included in the back of the chapters in which they are mentioned. However, no footnotes, commentaries or definitions are included in these selections by the authors, which may sometimes be frustrating because some writers are harder to understand than others. As a student who used this book in my humanities class, I would have to say that overall this book is an excellent survey of humantities because it provides good information not only about the writers, artists and musicians but also a good background of the social/political events of the times during which these people lived.
Great Book For All Interested Western Civilization.......2000-03-30
I, as an undergraduate student studying culture and civilization, was very impressed by the content of this title. It covers everything from the effect of the Mona Lisa on society to Guernica. It goes into great detail about how art, music, and archetecture has affected society throughout modern times. The quality of the book is unprecidented as the photos and painting prints in it are beautifully presented in a very aesthetically pleasing fashion. This is a must buy for all interested in the affect of the arts on society and culture. As this is the only textbook that I am keeping this year, I completely recommend it for those who may not be taking any subject associated but are just interested in its subject. If I could I would give it 1000 stars.

Customer Reviews:
O.K........2007-05-15
I thought the graphics in this book are AMAZING, but the text is not that great....
There are a lot of terms in bold that are not explained. The index is not very helpful in finding the terms; even basic terms that should be directed to a page(s) number.
Overall, I gave this book a "3 star" simply because the graphics are really helpful. If it were not for the graphics, it would be a "1"
One of the best textbooks I have ever had!.......2007-03-11
I really like this textbook. There were a variety of pictures and diagrams that helped me out a lot, and it definitely clarified the information that I got in lecture!
Traditional Textbook.......2006-11-05
This is a text book, and it's written like one. It's a hard read. I believe you could find a book a little easier to understand. But if you speak the language it would be great. It has excellent pictures, diagrams and tables which are very helpful.

i got the book in a speedy manner recieved the book in graet condition as promised will be purchasing future textbooks through this process
Beginner's anatomy 101.......2007-07-31
I have used this for my anatomy/physiology classes and found it to be very descriptive & helpful.I have compared the 3rd & 4th edition, there is no difference what so ever; Saladin is a great author as well as a excellent teacher. The 4th edition is only about 30 pages shorter, content taking out...
A very difficult read for the average person........2006-10-27
This book is a very descriptive book on anatomy and the author covers the human body in great detail and provides many examples and good illustrations. Here's why I only gave it 2 stars. This book is NOT an easy read by any means. It is truly college level reading material. I am a student majoring in Nursing and I have to tell you that the author does not do an adequate job of simplifying the material, which gets VERY complex in later chapters. Frequently throughout the text when describing something, say an organ, he will give you every last ounce of info on that organ but truly fail to tell you the BASIC FUNCTION that it performs. He uses a page of text when a paragraph will do. I frequenlty had to have a dictionary by my side reading this. Many of my classmates shared the same opinion. He does not "Dumb it down" so to speak for an average person who is reading this. Frederick Martini's version of Anatomy is much better. He really simplifies the complex concepts and his way of writing is much more decipherable and READER FRIENDLY than Saladin's. Many college students I know have struggled mightily reading through Saladin's technical writing and wish they had a simpler book to read. I probably would have done much better in my anatomy classes had they issued us a better textbook than this complex, indecipherable encyclopedia.
A+++++ .......2006-06-06
I am beginning medical sch in the fall and needed a solid summer review book. This text is great. The first ~5 chapters are mostly review concerning organization of the body and various physiologic functions that covers most of the highlights from undergrad. The next section is a great introduction to histology, followed by the body systems, pointing out all bones, joints, muscles, blood vessels, etc. that will be covered again in Gross Anatomy, all while presenting a coherent and easy-to-read accompanying text. In addition the illustrations are WONDERFUL. No sacrifice of details ocurred here.
One of the major contributions of this text is the online study materials. Saladin has provided a plethora of study guides, review questions and exams, all with answers, relevant weblinks (the LUMEN histology slides and practicals are a must), crossword puzzles, and perhaps most helpful, labeling exercises, to help get a firm grasp of the material. Gross is a hard hard hard class, and unless some review is done prior, it's almost impossible to learn and retain all of the material required. This is an excellent summer review tool!
Brand New...like they said........2005-10-04
The book arrived about 10 days after I ordered it. It was in "Brand New" shape like they said it would be.

"It has been sixty years, thirty wolf generations, since the last wolf pups were poisoned in the Yellowstone," writes McNamee. With the passage of time, the world is a safer place for the beleaguered wolf, so that, when the Interior Department conducted hearings on whether the wolf should be reintroduced to Yellowstone, some 160,000 letters came pouring in to Washington from across the country--the largest official citizen response to any federal action in history. Even so, the reintroduction effort was not without its divisive politics, and environmentalists squared off against so-called Wise Use movement activists in court and on the streets. Those political debates heated up even further when fewer than a dozen wolf individuals were finally released in Yellowstone National Park two years ago. McNamee tells this story knowingly--and very well.
Book Description
A New York Times Notable BookThe inside account of the environmental story of the decade Early in this century, U.S. government agents trapped, poisoned, or shot every wolf they could track down in and around Yellowstone National Park. By 1926, not one wolf was left alive. After generations of struggle between the wolf's friends and foes, the wolf was returned to Yellowstone in January of 1995. Thomas McNamee chronicles the drama of the reintroduction, the political machinations behind it, and the harrowing details of the wolves' own lives. In his telling, it is easy to see why this saga has stirred the imagination of a nation.
Customer Reviews:
the definitive book on the Yellowstone wolf reintroduction; and more.......2006-10-24
This is not only the authoritative account of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone, but also a profound insight into the process of getting things done in American conservation. The return of the Yellowstone wolf was the greatest triumph of species restoration in American history, and there are many lessons to be learned from this book. It's also a thrilling murder mystery, as federal agents track down the killer of the magnificent Wolf Number Ten. Written for adults, but great for kids as well.
The Return of the Wolf to Yellowstone.......2001-11-26
I loved this book! The only complaint I have against the book I bought was the lack of pictures. I had checked this book out from the library and it was full of pictures of the wolf.
If you have any interest in the return of the wolf to Yellowstone, this book will definitely be an asset to your library.
I would rate this book a '5', if it was the illustrated issue.
A fresh perspective on wolves.......1999-05-21
Residents this reason have heard lots about wolves, but Thomas McNamee brings a fresh perspective to the story. He was a part-time rancher himself while writing this captivating book, but was also drawn to the wolves more deeply than he had first realized.
McNamee himself is a character in this book, giving it an inviting and personal air, but does not force his views on the reader. He shows the reader a federal wildlife agent tracking a wolf-killer outside of Red Lodge and even opens the window on curious rivalries and tensions between agencies involved in various chapters of the wolf story. Parts of the book are almost dramatic in their intensity, while others slow the pace as the wolves romp and play.
A smooth reading, funny yet informative book........1999-03-16
I have been studying the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone for some time, yet this book not only gave me tons of new information it also made the information palatable by bringing with it humor and wit. Mr McNamee has an insiders view, being both a rancher and a wolf lover. Few people could see through both seta of eyes as clearly as he does, yet he makes it seem so easy. If you are to pick one book about the wolves of Yellowstone to teach you as much as possible I recommend this book to you. I do feel like he rushes details at the end of the book, but since the saga is not over, the book was hard to finish I suppose. Other than that small detail this is a great book with lots of facts and easy, witty, reading. Enjoy
A compelling read.......1997-10-22
Thomas McNamee is a passionate writer as well as a consummate naturalist, and what he has done in this book is a remarkable feat; to tell the story of the Yellowstone wolves from the perspective of a denizen of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem/one who owns a ranch within the wolves' new domaine/and an enrivro who questions his own, in addition to other's, emotional involvement with the issues raised by the their re-introduction. To do this all in a book as readable as this one is is a great feat. If you love the West, love Nature, or just want a surprisingly suspenseful story of the animals survival, the political and social implications of the wolf and, by extension, the ideals of the Endangered Species Act, you must read this book -- You won't be disappointed. It's a personal journey with implications for all of us who care about the imperiled natural world.
