Book Description
The first full, nonpartisan history of the Greek Civil War, the brutal guerrilla conflict that launched the Cold War.
From 1944 to 1949, tens of thousands of Greek soldiers and guerrillas fought and slaughtered each other and thousands of innocents in a civil war of unrelenting and shocking savagery. In the wake of the Allied liberation of Greece, the fighting transformed into a civil war, pitting Soviet-backed Communists against U.S.- and British-backed government forces. As the first proxy war between the superpowers, the Greek Civil War became the first hot zone of the Cold War.
In Red Acropolis, Black Terror, historian Andre Gerolymatos recounts the full history of this divisive conflict, exposing old wounds that still fester beneath the surface of contemporary Greek society. He tells the stories of ordinary Greek men, women, and children caught up in turbulent times and by powerful foreign forces.
In many ways, the Greek Civil War heralded America's future involvement in Vietnam: Not only did it mark the first time the U.S. used napalm, but it convinced U.S. policymakers that counterinsurgency operations were winnable. Red Acropolis, Black Terror unflinchingly presents the personal horrors of this brutal war, while exploring the global issues that make this "little" conflict so significant.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting book with several flaws.......2007-02-21
The Greek Civil war that began after the Second World War is still being felt today. This book explores it, beggining with the OSS intervention in Greece and the resistance to Nazism in Greece and follows the conflict up to modern times through interviews with normal people and history of the various governments and the coup.
This is an important contribution to cold war studies and regional history and squarely places the Greek Civil war in the context of the Cold War, the realm of 'small wars', great power politics and the Balkan region. This leads to one of the great drawbacks of the book: its over-emphasis on the role of the U.S and Russia, when we know that both played a far smaller role than credited. Stalin didnt support the Greek rebels and the U.S maintained mainly an economic support as well as using the Mediteranean fleet and a CIA office to support the Greek government. THe second major flaw is the emphasis on the "Black terror" which is mostly a canard. The Communist Greeke rebels murdered ten times the number of civilians as the government ever did. But somehow in this book that is called 'political terror'. One wonders if it had been the other way around if the murder of villagers by the 'Black terror' would have been called 'political' and not murder.

Book Description
Although this brief edition is two-thirds the length of its full-length counterpart, it retains coverage of all major themes and provides a truly global perspective on world history, without over-emphasizing Europe or the U.S. The Earth and Its Peoples focuses on the interaction of human beings and the environment, using this central theme to compare different times, places, and societies. Special emphasis is given to technology and how technological development underlies all human activity.
Ideal for one-semester survey courses or courses where instructors want to supplement their textbook with many primary sources, this text has been carefully abbreviated to maintain the essential narrative of world history. Specific areas of improved coverage are the early Americas, Russia, the Enlightenment, the Renaissance, and the Industrial Revolution. Structural updates include earlier coverage of the Americas and a chronologically organized section on the period from 1945 to the present.
- The new part openers include a brief narrative overview with a relief map and timeline that outline major historic events. The colors used in the timeline correlate to specific regions on the relief map so students can see both when and where an event occurred. All events shown on the timeline and map are discussed in-depth within the part.
- To increase student accessibility, the new brief edition now features a full-color design, which provides more effective maps and a colorful new part opener design.
Customer Reviews:

A Potpourri of Styles.......2000-06-20
I used The Wilderness Reader in teaching a course in stewardship and field ecology for teachers. I found that the book contained a wide variety of different types of environmental writing and that all of the selected pieces were excellent examples of the genre. Several of my elementary school teachers even read parts of the reader to their students.

Book Description
This major new resource is a much-needed support to the few text books in the field and offers an excellent introduction and overview to the established principals and new thinking in cultural heritage management .
Leading experts in the field from Europe, North America and Australia, bring together recent and innovative works in the field. With geographically and thematically diverse case studies, they examine the theoretical framework for heritage resource management.
Setting significant new thinking within the framework of more established views and ideas on heritage management, the reader re-publishes texts of the past decade with an overview of earlier literature and essays that fill the gaps in between, providing students of all stages with a clear picture of new and older literature.
A helpful introduction sets out key issues and debates, and individual chapter introductions and reading lists give a background collection of key works that offer ideas forthe development of thought and study.
With good coverage of major issues and solutions in Britain, the US and Australia,
The Cultural Heritage Reader will appeal to students internationally across the English-speaking world, and will stand proud as a key guide to the study and practice of this major archaeological sector.
