I recieved my order on time but I do not like the shipping company DHL. They do not have very good service. Amazon is a very good site.

3 out of 5 stars Not really applicable to a lot of jobs........2006-11-08

Many jobs in the military for officers require specific tests instead of the general officer exams. For Navy, for instance, you'll often just take the aviation exam. The exception is for general duty officers.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE FOR NAVY MARINE CORPS ASTB!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-05

Several probelms with the book. First, changes were made to the Navy's DCO program prior to 2004 that were not included in this printing. Second the ASTB has changed its format, when I don't know so that MAY be a problems with timing. HOWEVER OF THE SECTIONS OF THE ASTB THAT THE BOOK STATES ARE ON THE ASTB, ONLY TWO (2) SECTIONS WERE GIVEN IN THE BOOK TO PRACTICE ON, THE OTHERS WERE NOT INLCUDED. I am ticked of and felt I wasted my time waiting for this book and money on it. CHECK OUT ONLINE PREP SERVICES!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Book is poorly written with a lot of errors.......2006-04-04

I am very disappointed with this book because there are a lot of errors in it. I found the newer edition, and was disappointed to see the same typos in it. This was particularly upsetting because the typos that I noticed are in the Math sections (although I am sure they are elsewhere too) It is unfortunate there are few resources to choose from for this topic. The explanations in the math section are also poorly written. I am honestly worried about the real exam because this book gives me very little guidance.

Read Thomas Hochmann review of the book and that is about what i feel. The circit board part of the test isn't in the test any more. I took the AFOQT on March 10, 2006. The test has changed look at my other reviews to see how it has changed.
This sample questions are harder than the actual test. The math is definitly harder and some of the words are too. If you have time to find this book in a book store and have a few hours to just brows it do that to save your money.
But if you really need to buy a book to review the test buy this one and you will be very prepared for the non-technical part of the test.

3 out of 5 stars It was Okay.......2006-07-19

This book helps to brush up on a few key points, like math and mechanical. It depends on which test you are taking. It dosn't cover much of what is on the ASTB, it offers a little help, but not much.

2 out of 5 stars poorly edited.......2006-04-04

This book has a ton of typographical errors. This book and the Arco book appear to be the only 2 books available as study guides for the AFOQT. After buying and studying from both books, I am not surprised the Air Force recommends studying from other guides like SAT, ACT, GRE, etc. The explanations are poor also. I've been studying from these books and bought other guides and have basically been using the other guides to find explanations for similar questions that I do not understand.

1 out of 5 stars Do not rely on this book!.......2006-04-03

This book is full of typographical errors and wrong equations in the math section. I called Cliffs and reported at least 29 pages with problems on them.

4 out of 5 stars The Air Force Officer Qualifing Test has changed.......2006-03-12

I think that this book is the better of the two that I bought if you are non-technical. The test is now 12 sections. I took the test on March the 10th, 2006. No reading comprehension or Data Interpertation any more. I would buy this book just so that you are familar with the style of the questions. More of the test is concentrated on the Military Flight Aptitude Tests. If you want to be a navagator or pilot definitly buy the military flight book. It is even out of date too with a few sections not covered. There is one section of the test you can't study for which is section 12 of the test. Don't worry it isn't hard for anyone that graduated from college. General science is included in the test. Chart reading. the airplane direction with the instraments and aviation knowledge are still on the test. Movement of the blocks, and hidden objects are still on the test and the blocks touching the other blocks which the format of that has changed.

2 out of 5 stars umm... not so sure about this one.......2005-03-02

To be honest, I used probably less than half this book. I read through the verbal sections and those were ok. I skipped much of the math tutorials because I use math all the time in school. But when I got to scale reading, 3 out of 10 of the samples questions had incorrect answers. That was a shocker to me. How do book editors let 3 errors go unnoticed. Following that, in the mechanical section, there's a statement about how you compare viscosities of liquids.
"engine oil has a high viscosity because it flows easily while molasses has a low viscosity because it flows quite slowly."
For those of us who've had a decent amount of exposure to either math, science, or mechanics, we would know this is a complete fallacy. The typist probably got "high" and "low" mixed up late at night while drinking liters of coffee. But this does a huge disservice to anyone who isn't too familiar with these things.

I give this book 2 stars based on the absurdity of the errors.

Book Description

In addition to military academies and Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), the United States military services draw a significant number of officer trainees from the military enlisted ranks and from civilian college graduates, commissioning them as second lieutenants or ensigns after completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer Training School (OTS) programs. This brand-new manual prepares candidates to pass the acceptance tests for those schools. It presents in-depth reviews of all test topics, which include math knowledge and reasoning, word knowledge and reading comprehension, and general science. Specialized topic reviews include mechanical and spatial comprehension and flight aptitude. Full-length practice tests are as follows: two Air Force Officer Qualifying Tests (AFOQT); three Army/Marine Corps OCS test; and three practice tests for Navy OCS and Marine Corps/Coast Guard Aviation applicants. All tests come with answer keys.

1 out of 5 stars Beware bad math.......2007-10-03

Although this book is the only one that I know of that covers the revised AFOQT, don't buy it unless you have no other option. You would be better served by simply buying an older but better book and reading on the internet about current changes to the tests.

The mathematics section is where I noticed most of the mistakes, because they were easiest to spot there. And I'm not talking about typos either. Some of the "explanations" give you blatantly false information, such as "Square roots cannot be multiplied or divided, only added and subtracted." That is the exact opposite of truth! The only positive is that I got lots of extra math practice by having to do many problems multiple times to determine if I made a mistake or the book did. For the record, fully 15% of the math problems are incorrect!

I shudder to think about errors in other sections where I am not well versed enough to notice the mistakes. How many might there be in the pilot section?

I should point out that the author of this book, Rod Powers, is a retired USAF 1st Sergeant. That's right, a retired enlisted member. If his math was of this level, its no wonder he never got a commission.

5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-05-04

Out of all the prep material purchased, I found this item to be the most useful and beneficial. Not only is it the most current and up to date afoqt book around, but MANY of the questions mirror the actual questions that will be found on the test. I was able to breeze through many sections due to the challenge this book put forth. Yes, there are a FEW errors, but I found that to be true to some extent in all my purchases. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Too many errors for a test prep book........2007-02-05

I would agree with the guy who previously reviewed this. I am in the process of studying for the AFOQT and while taking the math practice exercises I have found three errors in the first 41 questions. What gives? Someone should have checked these before going to print.

Under the Mathmatics Knowledge practice exercises, there are errors on #28, #34, and #41. And I am not even all the way through yet.

3 out of 5 stars Rod Powers should be ashamed of himself........2006-11-18

It's a useful book, I'll give him that. It's also one of only two on the market that seemed very applicable to someone about to take the Navy Officer Aptitude Rating Exam. I don't have massive time to study. I work 8-15hr days. I work about every third weekend, and sometimes 3-4 weekends in a row. I work out 2-4 times/day. I'm trying to make the All-Navy Triathlon Team. I have two degrees.

Which is why when I do sit down and study something written by a 23-year veteran of the military, about something that he should be intimately familiar with, it disturbs me that there are so many mistakes.

I scored 3 wrong answers on one of the math tests. Mr. Rod Powers had at least 7 wrong answers, and he had the benefit OF WRITING THE TEST, with presumably a few math books open right next to him. Did no-one proof-read this or go through all the tests to make sure the answers matched the questions?

In some instances, he even had the right answer to the question listed in an explanation, but the answer key was wrong. Once he even has two explanations, one wrong and one right. Some answers are COMPLETELY unrelated to the question asked.

Some of the basic math he teaches is just BLATANTLY WRONG, not that I remember much from AP Math back fifteen years ago, but I'm pretty sure his stuff about square roots is just not right.

Holy crap, pal. If this is the best you can do, then the US Air Force was wrong to keep you around for 23 years. Good game job security working for the government, huh?

Settler Colonialism in the Twentieth Century is a powerful and thought-provoking volume of original essays that examine how settler communities have shaped landholding policies, laws, and race relations within colonized territories throughout the world. Historians of Japan, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East offer a compelling new interpretation of twentieth-century imperialism and establish an analytical framework for understanding the impact of settler communities in a variety of contexts. Case studies include the European settler projects in Africa, expansionist efforts by the by Japanese in Korea and Manchuria, Nazi attempts to settle ethnic Germans in Poland, and contested settlements in Israel and Palestine.

This is an interesting book. If I were more of an authority I would say it was before its time. Good formalisms of different kinds of grammars, like tree grammars. Also, a fair amount of pictures, which drew me to it while I was wandering around in the library, show applications of recognizing gramatical patterns.

                          Book Description

A Practitioner's Guide to Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation brings together knowledge and experience from conservation practitioners and experts around the world to help readers understand the global challenge of conserving biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems. More importantly, it offers specific strategies and suggestions for managers to use in establishing new conservation initiatives or improving the effectiveness of existing initiatives.

The book: offers an understanding of fundamental issues by explaining how ecosystems are structured and how they support biodiversity; provides specific information and approaches for identifying areas most in need of protection; examines promising strategies that can help reduce biodiversity loss; and describes design considerations and methods for measuring success within an adaptive management framework.

The book draws on experience and knowledge gained during a five-year project of The Nature Conservancy known as the Freshwater Initiative, which brought together a range of practitioners to create a learning laboratory for testing ideas, approaches, tools, strategies, and methods.

For professionals involved with land or water management-including state and federal agency staff, scientists and researchers working with conservation organizations, students and faculty involved with freshwater issues or biodiversity conservation, and policymakers concerned with environmental issues-the book represents an important new source of information, ideas, and approaches.
