This new book proudly displays a selection of eight different military dioramas by master modeler Greg Cihlar. Greg is renowned for his exceptional skills at painting, weathering, groundwork, and composition, and has won numerous awards for his dioramas at various prestigious model shows around the U.S. Although his work has been published many times before, this is the first book dedicated solely to his work alone. The themes of his works in this book, all from WWII, include a captured U.S. M8 “Greyhound”, a German King Tiger broken down under a bombed out rail bridge, a Sturmtiger in action during the Warsaw uprising, German street fighters taking cover behind a knocked out half-track, a Jagdpanther in a defensive position from a bombed-out German factory, a spectacular multi-leveled diorama of a Berlin sewer, a converted SdKfz 251 half track rescuing a G.I in Holland, and an awesome 1:16 scale King Tiger diorama. This book is packed with beautiful photographs of some of the best modeling around, and is sure to inspire and educate modelers and non modelers alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work.......2001-07-21

I'm giving this book "5" stars because of who the modeler is, but I thought more detail on the planning of Greg's dioramas and the actual steps involved in making his dioramas should have been published; this information would have been very helpful to me and other master modelers. Greg Cihlar's work is the most impressive I've ever seen. Greg is exceptional in his craft. His skin tones are the best I've ever seen where many modelers skin tones are yellow or orange. His weathering is excellent. His composition and groundwork are outstanding. The balance of his dioramas is very well thought through. Greg has a very special talent and I hope he goes very far with his craft.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Book.......2001-06-11

Greg Cihlar's Fabulous Military Diorama's is a suprisingly average publication. What you get with the book is bright, fancy color pictures, but very little substance. There is little detail on the planning of the diorama's and the actual steps involved in making the diorama's.

In a nutshell, the book is a advertisement for Verlinden Products.

4 out of 5 stars Fugitives of the Forest.......2003-10-31

Allan Levine's "Fugitives of the Forest" is a chronicle of the thousands of Jews who had participated in the partisan resistance in eastern Poland, Belorussia, the Ukraine, the three Baltic states, and the western part of the Soviet Union.
As the author mentions in the introduction, there were other countries where Jews had participated as partisans; however, the book is restricted to a study of only those above-mentioned geographical locations.

Most of the book deals with personalized oral accounts of those who survived the Holocaust and why and how they resisted.
Many of us will ask the troubling question, why did not more Jews resist?

The author very aptly states, our question should have been rephrased: "how, under the circumstances, was any resistance possible at all."

Levine points out that there were a variety of reasons why many Jews did not join the underground resistance.
For many there was a blind belief that if they obeyed the Nazis they would survive.

This was one of the main beliefs of some of the Judenrate. The Jewish councils established by the Nazis in each city and town whose main mission was to ensure that the Nazi's orders and regulations were carried out.
In certain instances these councils tried to convince their fellow Jews that if they worked hard and helped the Nazi war machine things would work out.

There was also reluctance for fear of mass retribution. In other words, if one family member were to be caught it was more than likely that an entire family would be killed.
Other reasons were a lack of arms, fear of the forest, a loss of all hope and some, who were too paralysed to act.

On the other hand there were those who emphatically believed in the slogan of the underground resistance: `the ghetto means death, provide yourself with arms, leave the ghetto and take to the forests."
It was not a matter of being a hero but only one of survival.

It is the story of these few Jews that are extensively dealt with in the book.
We are told of the men, women and children who escaped the Minsk and Vilma ghettos and eluded death for a brief time span.
We are also informed of some of the peasants who had collaborated with the Nazis and brought about the death of thousands of Jews.
However, the author makes it clear that it is difficult and nearly impossible to generalize about the behaviour of some of the European peasants towards Jewish fugitives. After all, they also were in danger of being killed by the Nazis if they aided the Jews.
Some of the peasants had taken great risks, while others were indifferent or frightened.

Some may question the accuracy of the facts or the reliability of oral testimony.
There are others who go so far as cruelly denying that the Holocaust even existed and they attempt to revise history.

Levine's book, although very well written, is nevertheless heart wrenching and extremely disturbing. Very often I had to stop and put it aside. ...

3 out of 5 stars FUGITIVES OF THE FOREST.......2001-05-10

I have just read this remarkable story. While the author's arguments are slightly flawed and narrow in scope, He has recorded, for history, the many brave acts performed by a group of people who refused to just give up.

1 out of 5 stars A seriously biased and uncritical story book.......2000-06-26

On page xiv of the preface to "Fugitives", Allan G. Levine states: "Despite the flaws..., the survivors' recollections' are at least (or more, I suggest) as valuable a historical source as any written Nazi or Soviet documents of the era... Oral history may be unreliable in some cases, but it is equally true that the passing of years can add a valuable perspective to traumatic events."

This truly surprising statement, coming from a self-professed historian, explains the spectacular shortcomings of Levine's book.

The treatment of the various occupations (Soviet, then German, then Soviet again) of northeastern Poland during the Second World War, in "Fugitives of the Forest" is seriously flawed. Not only does Levine not know Polish sources, but he also dismisses sight unseen readily accessible Soviet archival documents. This is an inexcusable omission given that the Jewish partisans were subservient to the Soviets.

Levine purges documents he cites that are prejudicial to his arguments. He does not acknowledge, for example, that there were Jews in political and administrative positions in the Soviet-occupied, eastern half of Poland, as well as ordinary civilians, collaborating with the Soviets in deporting one million Poles to the Gulag between 1939 and 1941. Jan Karski, the legendary Polish courier who was honoured by Israel for his efforts to warn the West about the Holocaust, reported that denunciations of Poles were "very frequent." Although Levine refers extensively to Karski's important report, there is no trace of this key passage.

Soviet wartime reports openly admit to treacherous assaults and massacres of Polish partisans in the latter half of 1943, in which Jewish partisans joined in, with predictable consequences. However, there is a deafening silence about such matters in his book, which relies exclusively on Jewish anecdotal literature.

Moreover, many of the survivors' stories, so uncritically accepted by Levine at face value, are so improbable that they border on the ridiculous. All in all, Levine's "Fugitives" has almost no scholarly value.

                    Book Description

This volume is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas and seasonally dry forests of the neotropics. Focusing on the molecular phylogenies and population genetics for uncovering biogeographic history, it addresses three questions: Where are the centers of species-richness and endemism that make up the floras of these ecosystems? How and why did this endemism and diversity arise? Are these ecosystems adequately protected, and if not how can this be best achieved? It also looks at evolutionary history, including links to the development of analogous vegetation in Africa. According to the Midwest Book Review (August 2006) this work is "...a seminal and necessary addition to professional and academic library Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies reference collections."

5 out of 5 stars The first systematic treatment.......2006-08-12

This book is the result of a plant diversity symposium that composed part of a conference held at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in September 2003. As with most scientific books of this type where the information is the result of research that was conducted very recently, there are numerous contributors, more than fifty. They come from most of the world: England, United States, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Switzerland, France, and many others.

Most of the book covers Latin and South America with discussions on the types of plants found in these environments. Only one chapter is devoted to Africa, the other large area where savannas and seasonally dry forests are to be found. And it primarily discusses the differences.

This is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant diversity in these neotropical ecosystems. It is a monumental work.

                      Book Description

This collection of studies by anthropologists, botanists, ecologists, and biologists is an important contribution to the emerging field of historical ecology. The book combines cutting-edge research with new perspectives to emphasize the close relationship between humans and their natural environment.

Contributors examine how alterations in the natural world mirror human cultures, societies, and languages. Treating the landscape like a text, these researchers decipher patterns and meaning in the Ecuadorian Andes, Amazonia, the desert coast of Peru, and other regions in the neotropics. They show how local peoples have changed the landscape over time to fit their needs by managing and modifying species diversity, enhancing landscape heterogeneity, and controlling ecological disturbance. In turn, the environment itself becomes a form of architecture rich with historical and archaeological significance.

Time and Complexity in Historical Ecology explores thousands of years of ecological history while also addressing important contemporary issues, such as biodiversity and genetic variation and change. Engagingly written and expertly researched, this book introduces and exemplifies a unique method for better understanding the link between humans and the biosphere.

                        -- The Environmentalist

The destruction of tropical forests is intimately intertwined with the fate of the rural poor who rely on this resource for their livelihood. Conservation of Neotropical Forests provides important information for understanding the interactions of forest peoples and forest resources in the lowland tropics of Central and South America. This interdisciplinary study features experts from both the natural and social sciences to illuminate the present dilemma of conserving neotropical resources. These contributors -- who are responsible for some of the most promising work in cultural and biodiversity conservation -- investigate the patterns of traditional resource use, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of existing research, and explore innovative directions for furthering the interdisciplinary conservationist agenda.

                                Book Description

This comprehensive synthesis systematically covers the entire range of natural and managed oak forests in the highlands of tropical America. Originally, these forests were widely distributed, but largely through human impact large parts have disappeared and the remaining patches are under increasing threat.

For the first time, aspects as diverse as the paleo-ecology, biogeography, stand structure and composition, biodiversity, population dynamics, ecosystem dynamics, fragmentation and recovery, conservation and sustainable use of Neotropical montane oak forests are treated in a coherent manner. Providing a thorough understanding of ecological patterns and processes that determine the structure and functioning of these magnificent forests, this volume can serve as a sound basis for sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in general.

                                    Description:
Habitat fragmentation is thought to create a barrier to individual movements particularly for area-sensitive species which, by definition, prefer to breed in large tracts of forest. For two breeding seasons, we radio-tracked an area-sensitive species, the scarlet tanager Piranga olivacea, in a fragmented landscape in northeastern PA. We found that scarlet tanagers made extensive and frequent movements among fragments. Paired males were less likely to leave their capture fragment, and traveled shorter distances. Unpaired males in fragments had two distinct tactics we labeled: ''Sedentary'' and ''Mobile''. Sedentary males stayed at one fragment and sang at high rates, while mobile males spent 58% of the total time tracked off their capture fragment and traveled over a kilometer away from the capture site over open fields and through forests. Mobile males were not floaters per se because they were territorial (i.e., singing) in multiple sites. Habitat structure of a fragment did not correlate with the percent time a male spent off the capture fragment. Males in fragments experienced lower pairing success and were more likely to be first time breeders compared to males in continuous forest. Our results suggest that movements by scarlet tanagers in fragmented landscapes are not restricted during the breeding season, and that these movements are related directly to pairing status and indirectly to population density.

                                      Description:
The cloud forest is one of the rarest and most threatened ecosystems in Mexico, although it contributes highly to the country's biological diversity and provides important ecological services. It is a naturally fragmented ecosystem, but anthropogenic deforestation and fragmentation has been severe. Consequently, it is essential to identify landscape patterns critical for the conservation of cloud forest. In order to understand how landscape patterns affect diversity in this ecosystem, this study explores the consequences of cloud forest fragmentation on bird diversity in eastern Mexico. I analysed the response of bird species richness and abundance as a function of forest fragment size, shape, topographical complexity, altitudinal range, connectivity, and proportion of landscape forested area in a system of 13 cloud forest fragments. Fragment shape was the main characteristic positively related to species richness in the bird community, but a differential response to landscape patterns was also detected. Fragment size was the main characteristic influencing the segment of the bird community depending mostly on forest, that is to say, forest interior and generalist species. In contrast, the extent of forest edge, expressed as fragment shape, produced a positive response of forest border species. Both, forest dependent and border dependent species positively responded to the extent of their suitable habitat. The immediate and most effective ecologically oriented conservation strategy for the region is the conservation of the largest cloud forest fragments.
