Book Description
In Beyond Baghdad, America's most provocative writer on strategy recounts the liberation of Iraq and analyzes its implications for the future of U.S. military strategy and foreign policy. Author Ralph Peters describes future threats at home and abroad, offers startling insights into today's most pressing issues, and highlights global opportunities that lie, unrecognized, within our grasp. Written in his trademark style--powerful, lively, and accessible--Peters' themes range from the lessons of recent combat experiences to a proposed revolutionary redesign of Washington's international strategy.
Certain to be widely read and heatedly discussed, Beyond Baghdad is destined to become one of the most influential books of the decade.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-04-02
Excellent - well written and insightful. Not quite as good as New Glory, but that would be hard to follow. I include it in my must read for strategic military thinkers as well as the well informed citizens.
plain common sense.......2004-12-01
If the US policymakers listened to Ralph Peters, the world would be a better, safer place.
Machine-gun bursts of common sense!.......2004-08-25
Ralph Peters has the talent to present his ideas with exemplary clarity without being repetitive or boring. Although he can't conceal his Republican sentiments and his contempt for the Clinton policy regarding the Al Qaeda and Iraqi threat, he gives a fine analysis of the current geostrategic environment and the kind of threats that Western civilization faces. His views regarding the militant Islam and Osama bin Laden are based on solid facts but they are rather stretched sometimes with conclusions like "extremist Islamists fear the girls". The epithets "killers" or "murderers" are also overused when he refers to Al Qaeda operatives, but I think that if it is a characteristic of the Islamic terrorists that we can't deny it's their immense courage and self-sacrifice (no matter the cause they are fighting for). US and the West must respect their opponents and their ferocity and not try to degrade them with epithets (it is understandable that during a war you have to cultivate hate against the enemy but this must not lead to fatal underestimation of his strengths). The best part of the book is in my opinion the second one ("Our Wars") which contains articles that Peters wrote before and during the Operation Iraqi Freedom. The author should be proud of his clear judgement and forethought when a lot of media people saw only doom and failure, and also for his courage to blame Defense Secretary and his entourage for their naive instistence to wage a war with inadequate land forces (a fact that became painfully obvious in the postwar Iraq).
The Cutting Edge.......2004-08-10
When you read Ralph Peters bring your thinking cap. He will challenge you by taking you outside of the box. He will not let you find safety in platitudes. Combine a razor sharp analytical mind with an extraordinarily gifted writer and you have Ralph Peters. In Beyond Baghdad Peters makes us look at the world as it is, not as some of us would have it. Consequently we realize that there will be no quick victory, no glorious sprint over the finish line in the war against Islamic fundamentalism. Peters tells us frankly that we are in a gritty, dirty and prolonged war against a brutal, committed enemy bent on destroying us. And then offers suggestions to win that war.
Peters eschews convenient partisan shelters to forge new strategies in this war. He has a global geopolitical view and a long horizon. Beyond Baghdad is a must read for any concerned, informed person who worries about what a tumultuous future holds for this country. If you want to learn what the war on terror is about, start with Ralph Peters and Beyond Baghdad.
Just finished watching Ralph Peters on Fox news........2004-05-29
I've read quite a bit of Ralph Peters, and I've seen him interviewed several times on TV. What he has to say isn't pretty. I saw a former CIA agent interviewed on TV the other night. He said we will not see the end to this conflict with terrorism in our lifetime, meaning people in their 40s and 50s. People like Jozsef Kele, in his "review" below, who live in a world of fuzzy wuzzy fantasy, don't want to come to terms with the dangerous world we live in. Many cowards hide behind the cloak of "conscientious objector."
Why some people in this country can't see the connection between Syria, North Korea, and probably Iran, is beyond all understanding. I guess they don't see it because they don't want to see it. I suppose that was the problem with Neville "Peace in our time" Chamberlain, who negotiated us into WWII. Do these people not understand that the socialist country of France was Iraq's biggest trading partner, and Russia is Iraq's biggest creditor? Who needs Iraq oil the most, France or the U.S. Why is Russia Iraq's biggest creditor? Why did Sadaam invade Kuwait? Did they do all this just to make us invade them. Wake up, all you people like Josef Kele. We have a war on our hands, and it just may be the worst war in world history. It will take a dedicated war plan, as Col. Peters says. And it won't be pretty. So Mr. Kele, just sit back and let the soldiers that hold the flag, and die for the flag, and whose casket is covered by the flag, do all your dirty work for you, then you can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

First Hand Accounts of Human Effects of Atomic Attack.......2001-07-10
This book assesses the changes that have occurred in the world as a result of the dropping of the atomic bomb from four different perspectives: the story of a person who experienced the bomb, the account of a physicist, the view of a U.S. President, and the outlook of the American people. For Yoshitake Kawamoto, who was in school only a half mile from the bomb's hypocenter when it detonated, it took nearly forty years to tell his story, but he is now the director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Japan. The physicist, Harold Agnew, flew over Hiroshima on that fateful day as a passenger on the Great Artiste, the plane that measured the size of the blast. The third perspective is that of former President Richard Nixon who believes that dropping the bomb was a major step in the process of maturation for the United States. Moreover, he argues that having the bomb quickly became a means of diplomatic negotiation for the U.S. Finally, the author provides a summary of the changes in American thought and culture after the bombing.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Forbidden Love with a Married Man; E-mail Diaries describes one couple's journey as they struggle with sexual identity and how it conflicts with right and wrong. This day-by-day memoir diary includes actual daily e-mails and correspondence between the author, Dennis Schleicher, and his 14-year married boyfriend. Will his boyfriend leave his wife and confess to her his love and desire to live with another man, or will he be trapped in his own insecurities and not move to a side of life he has kept hidden all of these years, risking the loss of his potential "soulmate"? Every married and single woman and male and/or those engaged in a relationship will learn the truth about two loving people who are highly challenged to reveal their innermost souls in order to "survive."

Riveting, thoughtful and perceptive.......2007-07-18
Wow! Thank you Dennis for writing this thoughtful and unique tale of a potent topic. I am divorced for the past 6 years from an 18 year marriage and fell in love last year with a man who was married for 33 years. In fact today is the one year anniversary of our first phone call. So when I stumbled across this book I ordered it immediately. It arrived Monday and I finished the last page on Tuesday.
I found it riveting and insightful although, in certain parts, the style of writing reminds me of a cheesy romance novel. But when you find yourself living a romance novel then it's a case of life imitating art.
I've read that a sequel is in the works. I can't wait to see what happens to this couple and I look forward to any insights offered by the author's experience. Kudos.
Must read for those who suspect........2007-05-17
Because I'm not a gay male, I bought Forbidden Love with a Married Man to research for a novel I'm writing. The book gave me needed insight to understand some aspects of gay relationships, and consequently, I think anyone who even suspects their husband is gay should read this book.
I commend Dennis for his honesty in exposing his private life to help others affected by these relationships. I would have liked to see the next stage of the journey that Bryon and Dennis went through. Something along the line of How to Survive Your Boyfriend's Divorce. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because deciding to leave is different than actually leaving, thus a significant amount of the story is left out. Perhaps that was because of the need to get this portion of the story out.
Now that Dennis has shown us the journey in deciding to leave I hope he'll share his journey as the other man waiting for someone to leave and share Byron's difficult journey of coming out and actually leaving.

You have to read it in order to believe it. Truly amazing...
This book nearly saved my life.......2007-04-07
Forbidden Love with a married man:e-mail diaries written by Dennis Schleicher was the nourishment I needed going through the darkest time in my life. I am a married gay man that has been riddled with guilt because I feel that I created victims in my wife and children for selfish reasons. I got married even though I knew I was gay but I new what societies expectations were of me and I thought marriage would somehow heal those desires. They didn't and they never will for anyone. Dennis's book not only helped me understand that my intentions weren't to do harm but to follow societies narrow expectations they have for men and woman. I truly did what I thought was right. I now have hurt my wife and children and it nearly cost me my life until this book was given to me. I have since join Dennis annonymous group for married men and he is not only wise and insightful but very compassionate and has personally helped guide me back out of the darkness of dispair that I was in. This book WILL and SHOULD become a movie. Thank you Dennis for your inspiration. Most sincerely, Aaron

There are better..........2003-06-22
This was not one of Packard's better books. Upon returning to the cave of time (read Choose your Own Adventure #1 for more details) you find yourself in medieval England. The king has heard of a forbidden castle that will enable anyone who conquers it to rule over all of Europe. Of course, you're a wierd person in a strange time so you're not exactly welcome here. Depending on how you go, the king may end up finding you or you won't ever see him. If you like fantasy books this one may be one to avoid. Except for the moving through time and one possible ending there's no real magic in the book.
One of the best of a fun series.......2002-11-08
Most of the best of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series (in which readers are asked to make periodic choices that help determine the outcome of the story)were written by its originator, Edward Packard, and "Forbidden Castle" is definitely one of Packard's better efforts. (I think his best may have "Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey?") It begins with the protagonist - you - returning to the Cave of Time (book #1 in the series) and ending up in medieval England, where the ruthless King has offered a fortune to anyone who can solve the riddle that will lead to a Forbidden Castle of great power. The riddle is a clever one with a logical explanation, and the quest for the castle proves a dangerous and ultimately rewarding one, though not in the way one might expect. Young readers (say, 3rd-5th grade) will want to read the book many times to discover all of the endings, and enjoy the historical fiction in which sensible decisions really do take you somewhere. The book features appealing illustrations by Paul Granger.
Somewhere South where it is colder..........2002-04-23
For those of you who liked "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," this Choose Your Own Adventure book is for you. A sequel of sorts to CYOA #1, "The Cave of Time," this story written in the series trademark second-person interactive, transports the reader back to medeval England. The reader may end up before this king, and the reader's life may be spared if s/he is able to provide a meaningful interpretation of the poem that provides the clue to discovering the Forbidden Castle.
Correct decisions may lead to discovering the castle and ultimately returning to one's own time. Wrong turns may have the reader die centuries in the past.
This was one of my favorite CYOA books, along with "Escape" and "Hyperspace."
