Book Description

Ever since the caveman gazed longingly at the winged creatures above him, mankind has been enamored with the idea of flight—of just taking off and soaring away. Steven A. Ruffin celebrates that spirit, that sense of wonder, with Aviation’s Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Winged Wonders, Lucky Landings, and Other Aerial Oddities. With dozens of top-ten lists focusing on notable flights, memorable planes, famous and infamous aviators, aircraft combat, air travel—even space travel—and so much more, Ruffin provides a treasure trove of fun facts and amazing anecdotes celebrating the world’s love affair with flight, plus the hurt that accompanies any deep love.

Will Rogers died in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska, with aviation legend Wiley Post at the controls. Rogers was writing an article at the time of the crash; eerily, the last word he typed was “death.” Isoroku Yamamoto, who masterminded the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, met his fate in similarly sneaky fashion. U.S. forces intercepted and decoded information on Yamamoto’s travel plans and “Pearl Harbored” his plane, shooting it down into the island jungle of Bougainville. The safest seat in a crash depends on if you crash on takeoff or on landing—so flip a coin! You’ll read about the first and worst of flight, aces and races, and everything from crimes, sex, and controversy to planes so fast they can outrun the sun. With Aviation’s Most Wanted™ you’ll get the history of flight from the early balloon adventures of the eighteenth century until the present, laid out with trivia and tales to amuse and amaze!

Book Description

This book reconstructs and studies the music, liturgy, and illustrations of a twelfth-century manuscript from the Austrian monastery in Lambach. The manuscript was taken apart in the fifteenth century and subsequently sold to various collectors in the twentieth century. The pages are here brought together (albeit photographically) for the first time since the original manuscript was dismantled five centuries ago. The book includes a black-and-white facsimile of the recovered portion of the manuscript. Charts and tables are used to demonstrate how it compares to other twelfth-century liturgical manuscripts.

5 out of 5 stars Some Book!.......2001-04-10

I never thought a book of such remarkable insight into 12th century Lambach could exist! I am thrilled to have this wonderful tome in my library, and urge any historian or linguist to buy a copy for their own. Lisa Fagin Davis is a rare jewel, and I look forward to her next work.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful examplar of the study of a manuscript.......2000-04-24

Lisa Davis' description of the Gottschalk antiphonary is a tour de force. It is a wonderful example of the study of a medieval manuscript in its total context. Although I had no personal interest in the book subject, I found it a great read and a very good mystery story for intellectuals.

    Book Description

The claim, central to many interpretations of the Renaissance, that humanists introduced a revolution in the classroom is refuted in Robert Black's masterly survey, based on over 500 manuscript school books. He shows that the study of classical texts in schools reached a high point in the twelfth century, followed by a collapse in the thirteenth as universities rose in influence. It was not until the later 1400s that humanism had a significant impact in the schoolroom, as Italian teaching, particularly at elementary levels, remained strongly traditional throughout the fifteenth century.

    Download Description

Based on the study of over 500 surviving manuscript school books, this original and comprehensive study of the curriculum of school education in medieval and Renaissance Italy contains some surprising conclusions. Robert Black's analysis finds that continuity and conservatism, not innovation, characterise medieval and Renaissance teaching. The study of classical texts in medieval Italian schools reached its height in the twelfth century; this was followed by a collapse in the thirteenth century, an effect on school teaching of the growth of university education. This collapse was only gradually reversed in the two centuries that followed: it was not until the later 1400s that humanists began to have a significant impact on education. Scholars of European history, of Renaissance studies, and of the history of education will find that this deeply-researched and broad-ranging book challenges much inherited wisdom about education, humanism and the history of ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The Premier Book of Early Middle Ages Research.......1998-12-23

Despite its age, this book is still the premiere piece fo scholarship on the Twelfth Century. The late Harvard professor Haskins was a master at presenting detailed, insightful research in an easy, accessible manner. Everyone, from the average reader to the advanced researcher will be greatly satisfied with this erudite work.

In this book, which he did throughout all of his career, he presents history in the broader sense: history that is flowing and morphic, not static and pigeonholed. He believed that breaking history up into little arbitrary units of measure, like the century or a decade, while convenient, led to unrealistic expectations of periods or breaks between events, eras, and cultures. History for Professor haskins was very much alive and could not be contained for our convenience, hence it overflowed our self-imposed boundaires, and events which occurred in one era, had their origins far back in time and their ramifications felt far forward in time. Nothing is encapsulated and cut off from the rest of time.

The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century is a very important book, because it recaptures the early Middle Ages from the dustbin of Dark Ages ignorance where all the centuries after the Fall of Rome and the better known Italian Renaissance of the 15th Century are thrown. It proves that scholarship and learning were vigorous, that the liberal arts flourished in towns, cathedrals, monasteries, and the newly founded universities (which is covered much more fully in his book The Rise of the Universities), and therein lay the expansion of the earlier Carolingian scholarship, the salvation of the Latin classics and laws, and rediscovery of Greek philosophy, literature, and sciences, and the influx of Arabic learning that was so influential in the later eruption of learning that led to the greater Renaissances and modern times. He proves however, that there were local origins of learning and that the arts grew very much out of their own cultural bedrocks. These were not ignorant scribes only copying work from far away and a millennia before, but intelligent and resourceful scholars who bettered themselves and their times.

Haskins is a master historian and this book remains a classic of the genre.

          Book Description

Winner of the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History

"Writing a book about one of the most complex books ever assembled is no easy task, yet Griffiths rises to the occasion. . . . In her treatment of the manuscript, and more important, its maker, a forceful new picture of twelfth-century female monasticism emerges, one that is far less passive than that to which we have allowed ourselves to become accustomed. This work will be widely and warmly received by medievalists everywhere."--Jeffrey Hamburger, Harvard University

"This is scholarship of a very high order. Griffiths's research is exhaustive, her knowledge of the twelfth century broad and deep. She has left no stone unturned in her quest to understand the Hortus, along with its 'mastermind' and the community that produced it, and to restore this work to its rightful place in the history of women's education."--Barbara Newman, Northwestern University

In The Garden of Delights, Fiona J. Griffiths offers the first major study of the Hortus deliciarum, a magnificently illuminated manuscript of theology, biblical history, and canon law written both by and explicitly for women at the end of the twelfth century. In so doing she provides a brilliantly persuasive new reading of female monastic culture. Through careful analysis of the contents, structure, and organization of the Hortus, Griffiths argues for women's profound engagement with the spiritual and intellectual vitality of the period on a level previously thought unimaginable, overturning the assumption that women were largely excluded from the "renaissance" and "reform" of this period. As a work of scholarship that drew from a wide range of sources, both monastic and scholastic, the Hortus provides a witness to the richness of women's reading practices within the cloister, demonstrating that it was possible, even late into the twelfth century, for communities of religious women to pursue an educational program that rivaled that available to men. At the same time, the manuscript's reformist agenda reveals how women engaged the pressing spiritual questions of the day, even going so far as to criticize priests and other churchmen who fell short of their reformist ideals.

Through her wide-ranging examination of the texts and images of the Hortus, their sources, composition, and function, Griffiths offers an integrated understanding of the whole manuscript, one which highlights women's Latin learning and orthodox spirituality. The Garden of Delights contributes to some of the most urgent questions concerning medieval religious women, the interplay of gender, spirituality, and intellectual engagement, to discussions concerning women scribes and writers, women readers, female authorship and authority, and the visual culture of female communities. It will be of interest to art historians, scholars of women's and gender studies, historians of medieval religion, education, and theology, and literary scholars studying questions of female authorship and models of women's reading.

Fiona J. Griffiths teaches history at New York University.

                Book Description

The twelfth-century renaissance, though usually seen as a French phenomenon, produced fundamental changes in the culture and politics of the wider Anglo-Norman world. The essays in this volume, by leadingscholars in this field meeting at La Bretesche, Brittany, in 1995, explore the impact of this change. Covering a variety of topics, including the transmission of Norman saints' cults, vernacular history and aristocratic values, and shifting modes of death and dying, they have in common the elements of change and transformation occurring throughout society during the course of the Anglo-Norman era. The late Professor C. WARREN HOLLISTER taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara.Contributors: C. Book Description

The aim of this book is to make more widely available a body of recent research activity that has become known as applied general equilibrium analysis. The central idea underlying this work is to convert the Walrasian general equilibrium structure (formalized in the 1950s by Kenneth Arrow, Gerard Debreu and others) from an abstract representation of an economy into realistic models of actual economies. Numerical, empirically based general equilibrium models can then be used to evaluate concrete policy options by specifying production and demand parameters and incorporating data reflective of real economies. Shoven and Whalley describe all aspects of developing applied general equilibrium models, including developing an appropriate equilibrium structure, calibrating the model, compiling counterfactual equilibria, and interpreting results. The authors contend that the Walrasian general equilibrium model provides an ideal framework for appraising the effects of policy changes on resource allocation, assessing who gains and who loses, and the policy impacts not well covered by empirical macro models. The applications in the book illustrate a number of ways in which fresh insights are provided in long standing policy controversies.

This comprehensive guide for new parents finding themselves overwhelmed dealing with the reality of parenting provides "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice to allay their fears. Written in a compassionate yet authoritative tone by two moms who are also pediatricians, this guide covers a wealth of topics that often prove daunting in the first eight weeks of a child's life. Starting with "Into the Mouths of Babes" (the trials of breastfeeding) and "What Comes in Must Come Out" (a discussion of "pee and poop") and moving on through "Fever: Trial by Fire" and "Seeing Yellow: Jaundice," this guide offers sound advice that will enable parents to feel confident about their parenting skills. Hints on daily living, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn are also provided.

4 out of 5 stars Cliff notes for your newborn.......2007-08-17

It is a good quick synopsis. A caring for your newborn cliff notes. They address all the major topics, deciphering cries, poop, bathing, diapering, sleeping, car safety, illnesses etc. If you are going to buy several books regarding your baby than you could do worse than to purchase this one. However, if you only want to purchase one book, get
what to Expect the 1st yr. They have an entire section devoted to newborn care. It basically gives all of the information that you could find in here. Plus, you are able to use it as a resource for more than just the first few weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to prepare for baby!.......2007-08-09

If you read only one book to help you prepare for your new baby, this should be it. It is straightforward and full of information, but not overwhelming or confusing at all. It does not waste a lot of space with excessive or redundent explanations or cutesy humor. My husband (who is a doctor) and I (definitely not a doctor) both love this book, and recommend it to every soon-to-be parent.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-06-21

I am a first time mom and was very nervous about what I was going to do after I had my baby as far as taking care of it. Before I read this book I was very scared and nervous about whether or not I was going to know what to do. This book sets your mind at ease and breaks things down in layman's terms, it doesn't give you more information than you need, and it doesn't give you opinion based information. I recommend this book to the scared first time mom.

                        Book Description

He has been cursed since age 15, carrying always the appositive affixed eternally to his name--the youngest pitcher in major league baseball. And yet the Joe Nuxhall story neither begins nor ends with the appositive. Baseball, in fact, may not even have been his best sport. He was a high school fullback, big and fast and good enough to be All-State, and he was unquestionably the best schoolboy basketball center in Ohio. He had pitched ten no-hitters before he was 15, however, and when he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds that historic time, he first had to get permission from his 9th grade principal, and ferried himself to Crosley Field and back, alone, on the bus. It was not, as history tells us, an auspicious occasion (an ERA of 67.50), but it launched the remarkable career of perhaps the best-loved and most enduring sports figure Cincinnati has ever seen. Noted sportscaster Greg Hoard's new biography, Joe, dramatically paints the Depression era background of "Hamilton Joe," closing industrial league games for his athletic father when the boy was barely a teenager, facing feared veteran slugger Stan Musial his first time up, and on to Birmingham, where he watched, astounded, while a lanky Negro pitcher named Satchel Paige warmed up by throwing strikes across a piece of chewing gum tinfoil. "The Old Left-Hander" pitched twenty-two seasons of professional baseball, including an All-Star year in 1955 when he led the league in shut-outs, and even when he retired to the broadcasting booth, he was still pitching batting practice. Greg Hoard's tale of baseball's last great innocent is the story of a charmed life, in which a blue-collar kid from a gritty industrial town, by great athleticism and a disarming guilelessness, found himself an enduring legend.

I grew up watching Joe pitch. Lots of pictures in the book, but it could have been much better written. Not that much about his major league career. Mostly about his life up to making the big leagues. If you're a Reds' fan you may want to read the book, but don't make it a priority or buy the book. If you're not a Reds' fan, don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars Reds Fan Must Have.......2006-07-10

If you are a true Cincinnati Reds fan or even a Major League Baseball fan you must get this book. It is a biography of a baseball star. The writer didn't just write the book as he saw it he interviewed anyone and everyone that might have had contact with Joe Nuxhall throughout his life and carreer.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Baseball and a Hometown.......2006-06-02

I purchased the book for a younger brother, knowing the Hamilton hometown scenes and connection would interest him. However, I couldn't put the book down. It was thrilling to hear of Joe's encounters with the Big League greats of the glory days of baseball. Greg Hoard's writing is clear and descriptive and moves you right along with it. This would be a good story if it were fiction. As a true narrative, it's fun and inspiring. It's easy to like Joe and it's easy to like this book.

                        4 out of 5 stars A great baseball story.......2006-04-26

I thought I had pretty much heard all there was to hear about Joe, but I was way wrong. This book never got old because while Joe stated the obvious, he also took care to let us in on other things that happened at the same time. Everyone knows that Joe gave up his high school elgibility to sign with the Reds at the age of 14, but how many know that he later successfully petitioned to have his elgibility returned? That he was an all around athlete at Hamilton High? That he had a sister who died as a toddler? I didn't, but now I do. The minor league stories were the highlight of the book for me, but this is a recommended read for anyone who ever tuned into a Reds game on 700 WLW during one of the stretches where Joe had decided to punctuate the action with a long moment of silence, (Do I have this tuned right, or what?) or tried to figure out what was going on when the action was coming fast. You had to grow up with it to really appreciate it. Great book.

This is simply a wonderful book. These black and white photographs, mostly non action shots, taken over 3 or 4 years at the same little league park in working class east Baltimore have an emotional power and honesty that is both rare and quite moving. The book works on so many levels: children, baseball, families, cities, and art.

5 out of 5 stars A photographer's labor of love and homage to kid baseball.......1999-04-01

This is obviously a labor of love for Connolly. The beautiful black and white photographs, a mixture of portraiture and reportage, capture the essence of kids playing baseball. This is reinforced by Cal Ripken's moving foreword, in which he writes that "for this brief phase in my life, the playing field was level and everyone was equal." It reminds me of Butterworth's revelation in "The Bad News Bears" that these are just kids who love to play; they have yet to place winning above fun.

Johnny K Heading Home is an exciting, sometimes humorous, and always fast moving story of a kid growing up in a "loving," albeit dysfunctional, family. A friend said I should have called it: Leave it to Beaver Meets Bart Simpson.

5 out of 5 stars As much fun as "A Walk in the Woods"!.......2007-01-16

With its episodic structure, "Johnny K Heading Home" lets you enjoy casually written humor reminiscent of Bill Bryson's best efforts without having to remember where you left off -- if you can even put the book down once you join the adventures, that is. "Johnny K..." reads as easily as listening to a favorite uncle, though it includes some hilarious raunchiness that few uncles would dare to share.

I'll start by saying, I'm only 3/4 of the way through this book. Nearly every story makes you say the same thing... "He's still alive???" This is a great book and an easy read. Written just like you were sitting in front of the author as he was telling his stories/memories from his childhood. Though you were a mischievous child? Get this book and find out how lucky your parents were to have you instead of this terror child!

Heading For Home by Zahava Hanan is the intriguing memoir of one woman's remarkable struggle with the big-business interests in Western Canada and her attempts to preserve her ranch from degrading industrial pollution. An inherently fascinating account of her friends, cowhands, neighbors, and even the opposing businessmen themselves, Hanan describes her twenty year-battle to protect and preserve her property rights. Heading For Home is a story of strength, will-power, and incentive, as well as presenting a kind of spiritual quest for self realization. Heading For Home is to be given high praise and recommendation for readers who would enjoy a timeless but modern autobiographical story that informs, entertains, and occasionally inspires.
