Book Description

The insider's story of the Atlas rocket, America's first intercontinental ballistic missile, is offered in this careful history of the rocket in its roles as both a civilian and a military vehicle. Written by the manager of program control for the Atlas project, this tell-all includes intimate details of the rocket, including its origins as the MX-774 prototype missile, the difficult development and deployment of its nuclear payload, the activation and deactivation of the Atlas rocket as part of the Strategic Air Command squadrons, and a host of previously unpublished pictures. The missile's development as a civilian rocket is also documented, including details on its role in the Project Mercury manned spaceflights and its use today as the high-performance Centaur and Agena rocket stages used for satellite and space probe launches.
Appendixes of the Atlas flight history, a detailed key of program events and milestones, and biographies of prominent Atlas managers are also included.

5 out of 5 stars I Loved This Book About The Atlas Booster.......2007-03-17

Very, very interesting. This book talks to many different people involved in the development and flight of the Atlas booster. I eat up all of these details. The people, technology, and infrastructure involved in making this rocket a reality are amazing. If you want to read the definitive history of one of our most important rockets, then this book is the one you need on your book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome insider's view!.......2007-02-19

This book is definitely worth the money. I got it recently and pretty much devoured it right away. Note that it is a moderated book, so there are many voices present in many chapters. In addition to the Atlas `steel balloon' flight vehicle design and construction, it also has a lot of information about the impressive civil engineering effort that went into the construction of the launch sites. It also has a detailed write up of the December 1958 Project SCORE, achieving single stage to orbit decades before it became a NASA mantra. To the authors of the book: THANK YOU for sharing all the early anecdotes of the Atlas program in this book, I enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Atlas: The Ultimate Weapon.......2007-01-10

An extremely interesting book about our space industry. However it is written with the Engineering and Management type mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Atlas Missile.......2006-07-10

I was a young engineer right out of college in 1956 when I went to work at Convair in San Diego. I knew most of the people and the history of the Atlas missile. I was in the antenna design group under George Tweed....a great supervisor who latter became Chief Engineer. The work ethic was great in those days. We were working on the ICBM that had national priority. I was with Convair until 1962. This book brought back many wonderful memories of the Atlas missile program and people that worked on it.

4 out of 5 stars Chronology of Atlas Missle Launches.......2006-06-16

I really enjoyed the way this book listed all of the Atlas launches, it allowed to go back a review the successes and failure of the program as I remembered them. It also has a great collection of photographs.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of the Cartograher's Art and the Historian's and Geographer's Expertise.......2007-02-13

This review can be applied as well to all those in series.
The title is spot on. Anything you might need to satisfy a lingering curiousity about the Romans, the Celts, the Anglo Saxons andverious other people arrivng or departing from Britain while roaming the world' gets a highly concdensed intorduction to all subjects "animal, mineral, and vegetable" to quote Messrs. Gilbert and Sullivan can be found herin, plus economic, sociologic, anthropologic, sociological can also be found herein. How the history of the British Isles, a thinly populated group on the edge of the workd and how the inhabitants More detailis on the era since teh Renaissance as that is the period of the beginnings og the Empire. And the the Dominions and the AUnstatrd are covered also.
The book is typicla of the publisher, well thought, desgned and clear. Each mahor topic is covered by at two pages arranged Each cnapter iconsizts of text and one or more cartographic gems commpiled at such a scale as to facilitate the reader;s xomphrehension of the narrative.
This part of a larger seres on similarly desgned books on several subjects, especially those that are best understtod in geospatial terms
As a professional cartographer and geograper I thoroughly appreciate the thought thought of which this is the result.
My only quibble is the size of the books in this series. It would be much more useful in the magazine size rather than the trade paperback size it is in. The recommended size is still holdable when seated in youe arm chair, and would not need a standor table as full aizwe atlases so.
. Unfortunelately most hiatorical books lack adequate maps or any at all. I once read one in whiich the mahor city that was at the centr of the the narrative was missing form the sorry sketch that was passed off as a map.
A great virtue is its usefllness as a companion to more dealeled works on hhhhhthe multitude of subjects

1 out of 5 stars His predictions never came true. .......2007-06-01

I read this book back in the late 1970's when it first came out. It predicted that California and much of the West coast of the United States would suffer massive earthquakes and fall into the ocean by 2000. He based this on the predictions made by different psychics, whose predictions all seemed to point to the same pattern of future events. It seemed pretty scary at the time, but as the years rolled on, none of his predictions ever came true. There are, of course, still others out there making various psychic predictions of massive disasters. While massive disasters can and do happen, I think the lesson of this book is that we should take psychic predictions with a grain of salt. We're probably better off looking at scientific predictions, although they are not infallible either (has your local weather-person ever been wrong?). In the end, we all have to live with the fact that we cannot know the future for sure. Yes, tomorrow something could happen and any one of us might die, but we just have to accept that this is a part of all life and make our peace with that.

This enthralling book describes fifteen of the most remarkable volcanic eruptions in history and, using rare firsthand accounts, analyzes their impact on the humans in their paths. Alwyn Scarth surveys volcanic disasters from the violent eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. to the fatal eruption of Laki that killed one-fifth of the Icelandic population in 1783 to the forest-razing eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in 1980.

Alwyn Scarth, former Professor of Geography at the University of Dundee also wrote "La Catastrophe" which is the best treatment I've read of Mount Pelée and the destruction of Saint-Pierre by a nuée ardente (pyroclastic flow).

"Vulcan's Fury" is a more general treatment of 'Man Against the Volcano' and the score in this book, at least is Volcanoes: 15 - Man: 0, although Parícutin had to make its kills by lightning and death by homesickness in 1943. As the author says in his preface, "This book is about an unequal contest."

The eruptions covered in this book are Stromboli (multiple), Vesuvius (AD 79), Monte Nuovo (1538), Etna (1669), Õraefajökull (1727), Lanzarote (1730 - 1736), Laki (1783), Cosegüina (1835), Krakatau (1883), Mount Pelée (1902), Parícutin (1943), Mount St. Helens (1980), Nevado del Ruiz (1985), Lake Nyos (1986), and Pinatubo (1991).

The most controversial inclusion in this book is the Lake Nyos carbon dioxide eruption that asphyxiated about 1,742 people. Professor Scarth is in the minority among volcanologists in his belief that the trigger for this disaster was an eruption of carbon dioxide from the throat of the volcano beneath the lake. Most people believe the trigger was a landslide. If the lake bottom's carbon dioxide build-up is slow, rather than eruptive, then it can be piped to the surface and dissipated in a controlled manner. In fact, this is currently being done. If the author is correct, there about thirty similar lakes in this region of Africa that could explode at any time--as if this continent didn't already have enough problems!

Hardly anyone ever dies in an actual lava flow except in Hollywood. In his conclusion, Professor Scarth categorizes the different ways to perish by volcanic eruptions, including the indirect ones--mudflows, tsunamis, fires, famines and social disruptions. Krakatau took its biggest toll via tsunamis. Nevado del Ruiz killed 23,000 people by melting its glacier and triggering mudslides. Pinatubo claimed most of its casualties by combining with Typhoon Yunya to collapse roofs under a mess of drenched ash. Laki killed its victims through the 'Haze Famine'--an acrid, blue haze of sulphur dioxide and fluorine that withered the crops and killed the farm animals.

"Vulcan's Fury" is a good general read, and could also serve as a manual for disaster management. Pinatubo was a much more violent eruption than Nevado del Ruiz, but its casualty list was miniscule compared to the latter because of "surveillance, political will, [and] evacuation of the threatened population." It is very likely that most of the 23,000 casualties in the river valleys of Nevado del Ruiz could have been averted through similar measures.

5 out of 5 stars Vulcan's Fury: Man Against the Volcano.......2000-04-05

Alwyn Scarth's book is ideal for anyone interested in volcanoes and their eruptions. His writing style is lively and keeps the reader turning the pages. I would class this, together with Peter Francis' "Volcanoes", as the best reference book on volcanoes available at present.

                                Book Description

Environmental values and concerns are meant to be reflected through environmental policy, which is then integrated into mainstream economic and social policy and serves to govern society and the economy. Yet effective environmental policy integration (EPI) has proven to be very difficult in actual practice and it remains largely an elusive aspiration. This is particularly the case in core economic sectors such as energy and agriculture, which have enormous environmental impacts but are also sectors in which other priorities typically override environmental concerns in policy creation. This groundbreaking volume presents the first ever detailed examination of EPI at the national policy level, focusing on the key sectors of energy and agriculture within Sweden, a country that is widely recognized as a leader in Europe and worldwide. In doing so, the authors unpack EPI, look at what it means in policy formation and examine how environmental priorities are treated in relation to other political priorities.

The final section of the book lays out the major findings and presents key lessons for international application including institutional recommendations on how to enhance the potential for EPI. Most fundamentally, the book answers the questions of what works and why for EPI, and how it can be achieved in practice across sectors. The result is a rich and indispensable guide for all those involved in policy formation in governments, NGOs and business and industry as well as environmental management professionals, and researchers and higher level students studying environmental policy.

                                            Book Description

This is the first detailed study of the ecological impact of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion on 26 April, 1986 - the largest civil nuclear catastrophe of all time. Geneticist Vladimir Savchenko details the effects of high level radionuclide release on the environment, on natural ecosystems, and on agroecosystems; the human effects then and now; the impact of radionuclide release on biological diversity and genetic systems; and the socioeconomic effects of the Chernobyl catastrophe. He also describes the Chernobyl Ecological Sciences Network, a multinational information network dealing with the large-scale, multidimensional effects of human technology out of control. The book has a bibliography, an index, and a glossary of units, ratios, and acronyms.
