Book Description
4GW (Fourth Generation Warfare) is the only kind of war America has ever lost. And we have done so three timesin Vietnam, Lebanon, and Somalia. This form of warfare has also defeated the French in Vietnam and Algeria, and the USSR in AfghanistanAs the only Goliath left in the world, we should be worried that the worlds Davids have found a sling and stone that work.Chapter 1, The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century. The War in Iraq. The War on Terror. These types of asymmetrical warfare are the conflicts of the 21st centuryand show how difficult it is for the worlds remaining superpower to battle insurgents and terrorists who will fight unconventionally in the face of superior military power. This change in military conflict may seem sudden. In The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century, Thomas X. Hammes, United States Marine Corps, details how Fourth Generation Warfare or 4GW has evolved over decades, with powerful military forces from economically advanced nations being defeated by seemingly weaker opponents.
Customer Reviews:
The 4th Generation of Warfare.......2007-08-24
Colonel Hammes' book is about the 4th generation of warfare (4GW). 4GW differs from the other 3 in that it intends to defeat the enemies' will to fight (hearts and minds) rather than his means to fight (armies, communication and industry). Hammes provides numerous examples of conflicts where 4GW has been used around the globe with varying degrees of success. Where the book loses some focus is in detailing changes necessary to the government and military of the United States to implement 4GW. Very little attention is given to either the Navy or Air Force. The book also does not try to show how a 4GW strategy could have been used effectively by the United States in Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq or even if we would have become involved in these conflicts if we knew they would take decades to resolve. Overall the book provides an excellent primer on how superpowers can be defeated and the future of war in general.
A breath of fresh air.......2007-07-08
If you're both confused and annoyed by the endless cacophony since September 11, 2001 by politicians, pundits, columnists, and tv and radio talk show hosts proclaiming to be experts on modern warfare, then this book will come as a real relief. This is a level-headed, unbiased, rational, in-depth, and intellectual tour de force that takes a good hard look at the reality of modern warfare. Unlike so many other commentators on the subject who are so blinded by ideology that they are incapable of making an honest examination, Colonel Hammes sweeps all that aside and delivers a highly credible assessment of the nature of the enemies we face today, why our current military structure is incapable of dealing with it adequately, and what we need to do to correct that situation. I never once got the impression that he was rooting for any particular political party, philosophy, or ideology. Instead, he comes across as truly detached from political debates and concerned solely with doing what is necessary to prepare the United States to deal with the enemies of today and tomorrow.
Hammes begins with a solid (though perhaps too brief) examination of the history of fourth generation warfare (4GW), which I found to be highly enlightening. Not being a military history scholar myself, I learned a lot from that part of the book alone. That history lesson is a very good lead-in for his assessment of the current state of threats around the world, and then finally a discussion of what steps we must take to deal with those threats. What he calls for is nothing short of a revolution in the way our military is structured and the way it operates, from the lowest levels all the way up to the Dept. of Defense and indeed the entire federal government. It's not a simple solution by any means, but that's what makes Hammes' assessment even more credible. In an age when we are constantly inundated with simple-minded "solutions" to complex problems, this book, while quite sobering, is refreshing to read.
I did feel like Hammes probably goes a bit beyond his area of expertise toward the end of the book when he discusses several topics outside the realm of military affairs, but overall this is a solid performance that everyone would benefit from reading.
Essential.......2007-05-07
One can hardly understand the war against terror and the conflict in Iraq without understanding the ideas articulated by Col. Hammes. An essential read.
sling and the stone.......2007-02-26
Very informative book by a former USMC officer. Provides insight into long term insurgent plans in the middle east, and reasons for the neccessity of continued persistence. Begins with a short review of the evolution of modern warfare into forth generation war, and the adaptation of 4GW in the twentieth century by various revolutionary groups. Also gives a brief but very good history of the Jewish and Palestinian conflict. If you think its time to just get out of the middle east this book might change your way of thinking. The book gets a little boggy toward the end, but overall an excellent read.
Put this in each military academy curriculum.......2007-02-16
And in OCS and Officer Basic Course and wherever future military leaders are trained. Then get the policy wonks on the staff of each member of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to read it. This is the future of war for DOD and Homeland Security and the sooner they recognize that fact and start retooling from the Rumsfeld technocrat philosophy and flatten the hierarchies the better chance our military personnel will not fight another Vietnam or Iraq with pollyanna expectations. If we had gone into Iraq with Col Hammes prescription...well.I believe he was on the advisory staff in the Baghdad and saw close up what was happening. Good book, a little tiresome in detail for a lay reader, but absolutely essential for understanding where we made (and are still making)our mistakes and what we need to do to fix them.

Airline book.......2007-01-09
Was interested in this because I, too, have trained for responding to a major airline disaster. Learned alot from this book.
Great Handbook on Poise: "a lost art".......2006-02-10
Though not necessarily the author's intent, I deeply appreciated this writer's insights regarding communication skills (both verbal & nonverbal), self-presentation, discernment, and crises managment.
I recommend EXIT ROW for individuals pursuing corporate careers, (especially in areas of communications, marketing or sales) or emergency management professions.
Author took no payment for the book.......2003-10-05
In response to doubletrouble... I read in a newspaper article that the author is giving 100% of the proceeds of this book to a children's charity. So, anyhow, I felt the book very interesting and a great testimony about airplane crashes and crisis workers! Everyone involved in the Sept 11th activation should read it. It was very moving.
Response to doubletroublefive-o.......2003-10-05
Review for Exit Row and response to doubletroublefive-o
I was deeply touched by this book, and surprised to find it contained much more than the title and subtitle hinted at. Not everyone is going to get the same thing out of a book, but in all fairness and honesty, I can only conclude that doubletroublefive-o did not read to the end of the book. Had he or she done so, the full picture would have come clear.
In a serendipitous way, two survivors of Flight 965 (one of the actual crash, the other the aftermath) meet and allow their lives to be enhanced by the other. Together they create a project to benefit orphans around the world, building swingsets as evidence of their love and concern. In truth, Mercedes became an orphan as a result of the crash, even though she was an adult by then. I can attest to that, because it's the way I felt the day my second parent died and I was already an adult and parent of several children myself. The loss of parents, so closely allied with our past, helps us empathize with those who are orphaned in a more profound sense as children.
Connected with this is the fact that the author mentions (to me a foreshadowing) the loss of her father at age 7, the details of which she doesn't learn for many years.
I applaud the writer of this book and her close ally and friend who helped inspire it. This book is one more proof that mankind has the capacity to turn tragedy into a lasting expression of gratitude for life.
Don't bother!.......2003-08-21
This book was NOTHING like what I expected. The author leads you to believe she was thrusted into a traumatic experience that changed her life. Her experience dealing with plane crash victim's families was brief and inconsequential! It appears she wanted to benefit financially from an event she was only slightly involved in. I'd give it 0 stars if I could.

Book Description
The Extreme Survival Almanac is written specifically for the vast majority of regular people who may someday find themselves thrust into an emergency survival situation far from assistance - everyday travelers who have no specialized skill or gear to help them reach safety. It provides decision-making guidelines to walk the reader step by step from the first signs of trouble all the way through to the rescue. It includes thousands of useful tips and directions that can be understood and followed by panicked, possibly injured laymen stranded in the woods, in their vehicle or at sea, plus resource lists for scrounging usable survival equipment from a car, plane or boat as well as the natural environment.
Customer Reviews:
I never leave home without it........2005-08-01
Although a bit heavy this book is a must for any serious outdoorsman. Whether you like mountaineering, ice or rock climbing, hiking, biking, canoeing, snowboarding, piloting or just simply travelling this book is suffused with helpful tips on staying alive.
The book is replete with diagrams and hand drawn pictures illustrating important points.
The most helpful aspect of the book is the section which shows you how to make a survival kit with minimal weight and volume that you will NEED to survive.
What a Great Book!.......2004-01-06
This book is full of Information that anyone can use, especially if they are an outdoors person, or travel alot. You can not go wrong buying this book. Way to go Reid.
A friend from Metlakata Alaska!
Amazing Amount of Information.......2003-07-05
I certainly hope I don't have to use such fascinating information!
I find it incredible that one author can know so much about survival in rare and difficult conditions. Note: this is not a survival guide for the average outdoorsman; it's a guide for the average person who finds him- or herself in extraordinary situations.
It's a great addition to the sort of coffee-table books one lays out to entertain friends!
...
If traveling in remote areas you need this book.......2003-04-09
What do you do when your car dies in the desert, or the small plane in which you are a passenger crashes into the water a long way from land, or someone on your hiking trip suffers a major injury miles from the nearest help? That's what this book is all about.
It covers a surprising number of subjects, all having to do with survival when help is a long way away. It doesn't tell you how to prevent an accident from happening, but concentrates on what to do now that it has happened. It's biggest recommendation: Don't Panic. Among the subjects covered are; How to build a shelter, starting a fire, finding and purifying water, edible and inedible plants and animals, waiting for rescue and navigation with and without a compass. There is also a large section on survival medicine, covering everything from CPR to spinal injuries to frostbite to infection to insect bites to seasickness. The author hasn't forgotten psychological first aid, too. After a disaster has happened, psychological injuries can be worse than physical injuries.
This is the sort of book to get familiar with before you go on your trip. You don't want to be reading it for the first time as the disaster is in progress.
Those who do a lot of traveling in remote areas need this book. Those whose traveling is limited to hiking trips in a national park or state forest also need this book. It presents things in a very clear, step-by-step way, with lots of illustrations. Even those of us whose traveling is limited to watching TV travel shows could really use this book. One day, it will come in very handy.

Book Description
Book Description
Michigan's "storms of November" are famous in song, lore, and legend and have taken a tragic toll, breaking the hulls of many ships and sending them to cold, dark, and silent graves on the bottoms of the Great Lakes. On November 18, 1958, when the limestone carrier Carl D. Bradley broke up during a raging storm on Lake Michigan, it became the largest ship in Great Lakes' history to vanish beneath storm-tossed waves. Along with the Bradley, thirty-three crew members perished. Most of the casualties hailed from the little harbor town of Rogers City, Michigan, a community that was stung with grief when, in an instant, twenty-three women became widows and fifty-three children were left fatherless. Nevertheless, this is also a story of survival, as it recounts the tale of two of the ship's crew, whose fifteen-hour ordeal on a life raft, in gale-force winds and 25 foot waves, is a remarkable story of endurance and tenacity.
Written in a style that is equally appealing to young adults and adult readers, Black November is a tale of adventure, courage, heroism, and tragedy. Kantar, the author of 29 Missing, a book about the loss of the great lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald, has once again crafted a dramatic narrative that is both informative and compelling. Although the Carl D. Bradley has been called "the ship that time forgot," Black November recalls that tragic day nearly fifty years ago and is a moving tribute to the ship and its crew.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Read.......2007-09-29
Black November is a well written short novel on the life of the Carl D Bradley and the men that sailed on her. An event such as the sinking of the ship could be an in depth, long novel, however this book tells the story while maintaining interest and keeping things to the point. Their is a brief illustration section mid-way through the book which is informative. I highly recommended this book for the Great Lakes enthusiased wanting to "get-their-feet-wet" in Great Lakes Shipwrecks and the like. For someone wanting to know more about the men and everyday life of the Great Lakes sailor, I recommend Gales of November-The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. All-in-all a good read and respectful to those who perished on the Bradley and their families.

Aircraft Accident Analysis: Final Reports
ASIN: 0195072235 |
Book Description
This work examines the causes of airplane accidents and what private and public policies are needed to improve aviation safety. It begins by examining the safety record of the United States commuter airline industry in the post-deregulation era characterized by increased emphasis by airlines on cost control and growing pressures on the air traffic control and airport system. The authors go beyond the safety of the scheduled airlines to examine the reasons for accidents in the nonscheduled and general aviation segments of the United States industry, where the bulk of fatalities occur and where airline pilots increasingly receive most of their training and experience. They then turn to an examination of aviation safety throughout the world, first with a detailed comparison of Canadian and American aviation safety, and then with a look at air safety in all regions of the world and the safety performances of all the world's major airlines. Three emerging issues are then examined in greater detail: assessing the margin of safety, worldwide aging of all airline fleets, and terrorism.

Real life drama........2001-02-21
I put on about 100,000 frequent flier miles a year. Once in an airport while waiting for a delay I came across this book. Almost as a joke I bought it to amuse my travel companions. We all joked a bit about it for a while. Our flight eventually boarded and I took the book out and began to read. I was captivated. I finished the book in less than a day. I left it on my desk in the office and people are still borrowing to this day. There is something morbid about reading these accounts but once you start you will not be able to finish.
Excellent, overview of commercial aircraft accident causes.......1997-02-08

Book Description
When a pilot experiences a sudden loud bang or sudden total silence, he is often faced with the stark choice of the parachute or attempting to get the aircraft down to earth in as few pieces as possible. This book describes twenty-three remarkable and true instances when, for a variety of reasons, all seems lost - but life was not. These life-threatening incidents range through the history of powered flight and all over the globe from Arctic waste to desert sand and from English hillside to coral reef. Within the narrative are moments of humor, despair and utter joy. The author has gleaned his information from a myriad of sources and many personal accounts. For those who love to read of the human spirit and its determination to survive against all odds - this book makes splendid reading.

WOW! This library binding is STRONG!.......2005-12-19
The second in Werther's series on humans as alternative food sources (see The Donner Party (High Interest Books: Survivor (Paperback)), the succinctly titled, Airplane Crash in The Andes Mountains, paints a disgusting and bloody picture of an Airplane Crash in The Andes Mountains. I really want to get in touch with Mr Werther because I have a great marketing idea for this book. Mr. Werther - why not make the books out of human skin? This would certainly attract a voracious following!

Book Description
The black box is orange -- and there are actually two of them. They house the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, instruments vital to airplane crash analyses.
But accident investigators cannot rely on the black boxes alone. Beginning with the 1931 Fokker F-10A crash that killed legendary football coach Knute Rockne, this fascinating book provides a behind the scenes look at plane wreck investigations. Professor George Bibel shows how forensic experts, scientists, and engineers analyze factors like impact, debris, loading, fire patterns, metallurgy, fracture, crash testing, and human tolerances to determine why planes fall from the sky -- and how the information gleaned from such reconstructions is incorporated into aircraft design and operation to keep commercial aviation as safe as possible.
