Book Description

"The Foundation of Rome is one of the few intelligent books on the subject, neither hypercritical nor visionary; its particular strength lies in the skillful interweaving of modern historiography and ideology with ancient history."--Jerzy Linderski, University of North Carolina

At once a historical essay and a self-conscious meditation on the writing of history, The Foundation of Rome takes as its starting point a series of accounts of Rome's origins offered over the course of centuries. Alexandre Grandazzi places these accounts in their contemporary contexts and shows how the growing sophistication in methodology gradually changed the accepted views of the city's origins. He looks, for example, at the hypercritical philology of the nineteenth century which cast aside everything that could not be verified. He then explains how the increase in archaeological discoveries and changing archaeological techniques influenced the story of Rome's birth. Grandazzi produces a depiction of Rome's origins that is both up-to-date and provocative. His use of scientific parallels in describing changes in the ways texts were analyzed and his broad familiarity with comparative material make his synthesis particularly illuminating, and he writes with clarity, verve, and wit.

2 out of 5 stars Too much blather.......2003-09-26

How have important archaeological discoveries of the last half-century revolutionized our thinking about the origins of Rome, especially the foundation myth of Romulus? That's the subject of this book, and it's a fascinating one - the subject, that is, NOT the book. Grandazzi does present a few interesting ideas, but they are few and far between, and could easily have appeared in a 30-page monograph rather than a book-length work. Much too much of the book is filled with digressions such as this one: "Paradoxically, it is the technological development made possible by the use of computers that has raised the risk of rigidifying this still necessary evolution. On the luminescent screens of these miraculous little machines, which archaeologists for good reason put to great use, the date attached to each of the catalogued objects is stripped of it hypothetical character and acquires a legitimacy, an obviousness, an objectivity - the weight of reality in short." This kind of blather goes on for page after page. And despite the fact this is a paperback reprint of a previous hardcover, there remain uncorrected errors in spelling (Asier for Aesir, the Norse gods; Tarquinius Piscus for Tarquinius Priscus) as well as errors in the footnoted references to other works (the wrong date for an article in a philological journal, for example). Readers interested in the subject will find much greater rewards in THE BEGINNINGS OF ROME by T.J. Cornell, who deals with the same material in far greater depth and proves that even the most complex issues can be clearly presented and cogently argued. More theoretical but equally disciplined is REMUS: A ROMAN MYTH by T.P. Wiseman, who presents ideas far more daring than those of Grandazzi yet still keeps his feet firmly on the ground (and his prose firmly on subject).

The Global Studies series is designed to provide comprehensive background information and selected world press articles on the regions and countries of the world. This edition of Global Studies: Islam and the Muslim World is a mini-encyclopedia on the subject. The Preface maintains that we are living in a globally interdependent world in which it is imperative for the non-Muslim world to understand the faith of 1.3 billion Muslims who live all over the world. Part I comprises two chapters: Chapter 1 is a timeline of the “Momentous Events And Influential Muslims That Have Shaped Islamic Civilization (570-1605 CE);” Chapter 2, “Understanding Islam, Muslims, Islamism, and Anti-Americanism,” comprises sections on the “Fundamentals of Islam,” “Islamism,” “Myths and Misconceptions About Islam and Muslims,” as well as “Islamophobia in the West and Anti-Westernism/Anti-Americanism in the Muslim World.” Chapter 2 also has several informative boxes and tables that present vitally important matters pertaining to Islam and Islamism at a glance. The two boxes are “The Ninety-Nine Names of God” and “Sensational Events in the Media about Islam and Muslims.” The six tables in the chapter are “Sunnis and Shi`as: A Comparison of Islam’s Two Major Sects,” “A Comparison of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity,” “Jesus and Muhammad: Founders of the World’s Two Largest Religions,” “Islam and the Nation of Islam: A Comparative Overview,” “Revolutionary Islamists and Muslim Secularists: A Succinct Comparison,” and “A Comparison of Revolutionary Islamists and Progressive Islamists.” Part II comprises informative “Country Reports” for the fifty-seven member states that represent the Muslim world’s interests through the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Part III provides readers with world press articles on various aspects of the World of Islam. This book also provides readers with a list of annotated Internet sites on Islam. In addition, a list of articles and books on Islam and the Muslim world, a selected glossary of key terms, and a comprehensive and easy to access index are provided.

As a student of political science and international relations I always look for new publications that relates to the Middle East. When I first heard about this book from a friend of mine; I asked him if I can borrow it to go over the book quickly. I was amazed how the author was able to capture all the significant and important aspects of Islam and the Muslim world in the most simple and easy to follow method. I loved the tables in the book and how the author was able to compare and contrast between the different elements of Islam. This book has many important articles written by prominent scholars in the field of international politics and Middle Eastern Studies. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested to learn the surface and depth about Islam and the Muslim World. I have decided to buy this book and added it to my small library.

To the West, the Islamic world often appears homogeneous and monolithic; the Islam practiced in Iran or Saudi Arabia is our model for Islam everywhere: heavily veiled women, strictly segregated schools and workplaces, the harsh law of sharia demanding a thief's hand cut off or an adulterous woman stoned to death. In reality, the practice of Islam varies widely from place to place and culture to culture; in Turkey, for example, Islam may be the religion of the majority, but the political and legal systems are strictly secular. In Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, politics and religion are one, represented by the power of the mullahs and the ruling family. Uzbeki Muslims are different from Senegalese Muslims, and North African Islam has more than a little sub-Saharan influence to thank for its pantheon of djinns, afrites, and holy saints. Just as religious practices differ from country to country, so does the impact of Islam on women. Muslim women in Morocco, for example, have the legal right to drive a car, while women in Saudi Arabia do not. This being the case, is it even possible to define an Islamic brand of feminism? Elizabeth Warnock Fernea, a professor of Middle Eastern studies at the University of Texas, Austin, certainly tries and, in many cases, succeeds. Her book, In Search of Islamic Feminism, is both an account of her many years spent living and traveling in the Middle East and an attempt to define the issues facing Islamic women today. Though Fernea occasionally comes off as naive, she also makes valuable points about the many faces of Islam and feminism.

    Book Description

"Islamic feminism" would seem a contradiction in terms to most Westerners. We are taught to think of Islam as a culture wherein social code and religious law alike force women to accept male authority and surrender to the veil. How could feminism emerge under such a code, let alone flourish? Now, traveling throughout Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as Islamic communities in the United States, acclaimed Arab Studies scholar and bestselling author Elizabeth Fernea sets out to answer that question.

Fernea's dialogue with friends, colleagues, and acquaintances prompts a range of diverse and unpredictable responses, but in every country she visits, women demonstrate they are anything but passive. In Iraq, we see an 85 percent literacy rate among women; in Egypt, we see women owning their own farms; and in Israel, we see women at the very forefront of peacemaking efforts. Poor or rich, educated or illiterate, these women define their own needs, solve their own problems, and determine the boundaries of their own very real, very viable feminism. In Search of Islamic Feminism offers a groundbreaking new interpretation of the status and vision of Muslim women that will open up a new world to its readers, even as it challenges our own sense of what feminism means.

2 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but problematic.......2004-04-01

This is without a doubt the most informative book I've ever read. The lessons learned are innumerable, invaluable, and unforgettable. Fernea however, is irrepressibly annoying. Not only does she seem unbelievably ignorant about the cultures she studies, especially for such an accredited "expert", but she clings firmly to her own misconceptions and stereotypes, regardless of what her interviewees may say. I give her credit though, for being so honest. In that position, I might have tried to make it sound like I knew what I was talking about.

    4 out of 5 stars a personal account.......2001-09-30

Very interesting personal account of a Western woman's experiences in the Middle-East, giving a voice to those who really have no voice: the women. No, this isn't scholarly and her lack of ability to speak Arabic certainly handicaps her, but still this is valuable.

Those who complain about the emphasis on clothing are either apologists or fail to understand the meaning of such required restrictive dress to Western women: it means a lack of ability to move about freely (because of voluminous fabric or the heat of wearing such occulsive clothes) as well as, more seriously, the idea that women are objects to be kept secluded because they belong to a man. It means that women are responsible for men's morality and must pay for men's inability to exhibit self-control. I don't think Fernea did a good job of explaining her own view of such subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the other reviews turn you off ---.......2001-06-11

A superb book, describing the authors travels to several Middle Eastern countries emphasizing the role of women in each country. In her discussions with local women, she explores the various images of women, in those countries and in the West, and looks for how feminist ideas interact with Islamic cultures. I lead tour groups to the Middle East, and one of the most common questions I hear from prospective travelers is the perception that women in all Islamic countries are oppressed and undervalued. Fernea and her associates dispell this idea, and show the wide range of responses and possibilities. As in the West, many people have a reluctance to even use the word 'feminism', when in fact there is substantial agreement on the actual ideals of equality and other principles that transcend other cultural or religious artifacts and obstacles. On our trips, we don't often have the chance to get as involved in discussions as Fernea, with her years of experience and contacts does, but, in what I have experienced (in Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Uzbekistan and Turkey), her discussions here ring true. Along with Dalrymple's From the Holy Mountain, these are 2 of my highest recommended books as glimpses of modern culture in the Middle East. It was particularly interesting to read some of the negative reviews on Amazon -- I find it hard to believe those people were reading the same book I was!

    3 out of 5 stars Long journey.......2000-12-04

This book describes Fernea's personal quest for Islamic feminism throughout the Middle East. Each chapter describes her experiences in a different country. It is never made clear whether the ordering of the chapters corresponds to the chronology of her visits, although she mentions in the beginning that she began in 1994, and the most recent entries seem to be from about 1997. Although some of the visits seem to be specifically for this project, others appear to have been incidental, where she did research for the project while on various lecture tours arranged for other purposes.

Fernea writes from a very personal point of view in this book. Indeed, the book, with its details of such things as the food she ate and her misadventures with her hostesses' dog, comes across more as a travel journal than an academic survey. Throughout, she seems to go out of her way make it clear that she does not consider herself an expert on the topic, but rather as a curious seeker. She also laments frequently her limited ability in Standard Arabic. Coming from an author of her stature, this is a bit surprising. But then again, this is in line with her previous ethnographic studies on the Middle East, which described her and her family's personal dealings with the culture as much as they described the culture itself. And perhaps given the topic and the ethnicity of the author, this was the only possible approach for a book exploring these questions.

Fernea presents few clear conclusions in her search for Islamic feminism. Those generalities that are mentioned come mostly from the mouths of the women she interviews. The clearest message is that women in the Middle East seem leery of the term "feminist". To them, "feminism" seems to represent attitudes of Western women (of perhaps questionable morals) who want to subvert their culture. On the other hand, virtually all the women interviewed in the book are concerned about women's issues and would like to improve the lives of women in their communities. Several of the women stressed that there is no overall "Islamic" culture; each Islamic country has its own culture. The issues that are important for women in any given country arise more from the culture than from the religion. Nevertheless, the religion does provide certain rights and expectations for all Islamic women; whether the women can take advantage of these rights depends on the conditions prevailing where they live.

This book represents yet another chapter in the Fernea's growth in understanding about the women in this region. As such, it will be a welcome addition in the library of anyone who has read her previous books, or for anyone else who is exploring women's issues and Islam.

1 out of 5 stars Nice as a travel book.......2000-05-16

This book is nice as a travel book. Description of the "adventures" was really enjoyable. But that was it! The author seemed so much interested in the external appearances rather than the core. For example, I noticed the way she handled the Islamic dress code. As a feminist, she obviously has her biased stand against it. There's much more in the life of a Muslim woman than the way she dresses, but it seemed that this issue was one of the author's most primary targets. She handled the issue in such a naive way and displayed any positive views expressed by some Muslim women in a disagreeable manner.

I was astonished to learn from the book that Mrs. Fernea doesn't know standard Arabic. This means she doesn't have direct access to all the Arabic written material. All her sources must be second hand. If this is the case, then I wonder how she can be described as an "acclaimed Arab Studies scholar." Neither her short visits to Arab and Muslim countries, nor her stay with her husband in a remote village in Iraq qualify her to be an authority in Arab studies.

    Book Description

Jules Verne, one of the founding fathers of science fiction, was the author of such thrilling and perennial favorites as Around the World in Eighty Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, as well as more than sixty other novels of adventure and exploration. One hundred years after his death, this magnificent new collection celebrates Verne’s amazing vision. A host of today’s top science fiction authors pay homage to Verne’s genius with a series of stories inspired by his groundbreaking imagination and original characters. In this anthology are extraordinary voyages of discovery and adventure from the four corners of the globe, and even within it. Following the tradition of Verne’s original tales, Ian Watson tells of a journey deep into the center of the Earth, where Verne himself does battle with occultist Nazis, and Adam Roberts takes us to latter-day California, where a descendant of Verne’s character Hector Servadac is preparing for the end of the world as we know it. These and many more compelling adventures add up to an anthology that will introduce a new generation to the wonder of Jules Verne and delight readers already familiar with the master.

I've decided to treat myself to only one of these a week after reading the first 4 this weekend. Who knows if we'll ever get new Verne stories again by authors of this caliber. (The editorial review doesn't do justice to the contributors. Check the table of contents scan.) Each story deserves to be savored fully. The first four are each very different - one's even a parody of Paris in the 20th Century - reflecting the various strengths and tastes of the authors; but, at the same time, you feel that you are reading Verne himself somehow. Even the parody!

    5 out of 5 stars Griffiths' Finest.......2002-05-24

Of all Griffiths' books this is surely the most beautifully written and the most profoundly mystical. In the first chapter he gives a kind of progress report by reflecting on what life in India has done to him, on how his mind has developed over the years, on the changes that have taken place in his way of life and in the depths of his soul. As a framework for all this he explores the meaning of the three vows of religious life: poverty, chastity, and obedience.

He understands humans as products of evolution, including the evolution of consciousness, and culture and religious expression as conditioned by history. What makes humans unique is their capacity for self-transcendence, and this is what religion is all about. Each religion is a culturally determined medium (or vehicle) to undertake the search for ultimate reality or absolute being. This reality has been revealed in a variety of ways in different circumstances and historical epochs.

In subsequent chapters, Griffiths looks at the meaning of original sin as a failure to appreciate the idea of interiority. He looks at the eternal nature of each person as a thought in the mind of God. Death, he says, should not be feared or despised but regarded as a sacrament of passage into eternal life. He contrasts the eternal religion with the church as a sacramental entity and explores each of the higher religions in terms of three features they all share: organization, ritual, and doctrine. In a fascinating later chapter he speaks of the Spirit as the feminine principle guiding the development of the world. Not all Christians will be pleased with this author's critical views of the Church. But they are views with which we can all agree after some reflection on our own history and culture and on the real meaning of our own religious belief and practice.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding ... intelligent ... compassionate ... wise ..........1999-10-28

Bede Griffiths gives an engaging, authoritative and comprehensive account of the human experience in God's universe ... a must-read for all those with a thirst for knowledge, divinity and love.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......1998-02-13

An excellent book by Bede. Reminiscent of 'The Universe Is A Green Dragon' By Brian Swimme (but with a Christian perspective). Similar to the progression from matter to divine consciousness seen by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice of True Authority.......1997-11-07

We are all looking for meaning and purpose in our lives. But there are so many Ways. And so many books about those Ways. Amidst all this mass of material, which voices are authentic and can be trusted, which Ways true? The field of religion is notoriously open to false prophets, to charlatans who profit from people's sincere need to find greater fulfilment in life. Anyone who is sincerely searching for meaning can trust Bede Griffiths. What he tells us about the Universe and the Spirit of Love, which he affirms is the basis of all life, is written with utter authority - the authority which comes from living experience, not from abstract theology. It is certainly The Word of God, and it comes through a man of gentle temperament, of real learning and wisdom, who had a great gift for expressing himself, so that his words fascinate us intellectually, engage us imaginatively, and touch us emotionally. It is the greatest book of its kind I have ever read. Roger Noël Smith. noelsmit@cc.jyu.fi

If you grew up in the 60's and 70's with Seattle radio and the local dance and band scene, here's your book. Pat wrote a good one and I hope he finds time to do another. He didnt get it all because he couldnt possibly fit it all in. It also helps if you were a a radio person on the inside during that time to fully understand what that industry was going thru. Its was the swan song of AM broadcasting as a music medium. FM was right on its tail.. I met Pat when I was about 13-14 years old when a friend of mine and myself (we were considered early day geeks) wanted to go see what a 5000 watt transmitter looked like. We somehow got down to West Seattle to KJR and hounded and badgered the hell out of a poor receptionist with a million questions for an hour before she grabbed an employee who happened to be walking thru the station to take over. That employee was Pat O' Day. He spent a part of his afternoon showing us the station and all the (at that time) cool gadgets and gizmo's that made it all go together. We were blown away by it all. Never got to see the transmitter but we didnt care. That moment for me was instrumental in me getting into that business for a few years in the early 70's. THis book brings it all back. Pat will go down in Seattle history as being our own Alan Freed. Or better yet, our own Dick Clark. So many of those bands, some that still play today, you would never have heard of if it hadnt been for Pat and Concerts West. He personalized the rock entertainment industry in Seattle. Not to be compard with the awful, sanatized and over done over cost over budget way it is all done now in the world of ticketmaster etal. You'll like this book if you grew up on Seattle radio and its people. Pat talks about most all of them in one regard or another. What fun and torture it all must have been...

Having grown up in the Northwest, when I saw It Was All Just Rock n Roll II in the bookstore, I couldn't wait to read it. Evidently, the first version was filled with editorial mistakes, as well as some inaccuracies. This edition still contains some grammatical and factual errors, but it's relatively clean.

Pat O'Day was huge in Seattle when I was a teenager, and when I had to leave the area in 1969, other than my family and some friends, he was probably what I missed most about the Puget Sound. As O'Day mentions in his book, Seattle's KJR was blessed with many excellent DJ's, but there was only one Pat O'Day, and he was without a doubt, the King of disc jockeys in this part of the country. My subsequent travels around the country led me to believe that he was truly the best during his 1960-1974 hey day. It was Pat O'Day who inspired me to enter radio and forsake an effort at taking my own stab at becoming a rock and roll musician. No, instead I opted to become a radio disc jockey, and make no mistake, I wanted to be another Pat O'Day. I had my day in radio, though it wouldn?t be in the Pacific Northwest, and I never reached the heights of Pat O'Day or any of the other fine dj's at KJR.

I desperately wanted to give this book five stars. However, being an English teacher, and a harsh critic of biographical writing, I am only able to offer four. It Was All Just Rock n Roll excels in several areas, but fails miserably in a few along the way. The good points are many. For one, and this is actually a big deal, the book is of extremely high quality. The paper is very expensive, heavy, somewhat glossy, and very nicely textured. The binding is some of the best I've ever seen, and the book's end covers are made of highly durable material, though not leather, of course. This book will not fall apart. The information contained in the book is very interesting for those of us who have worked in radio, concerts, etc, and/or lived in the Northwest. O'Day gives some great insight into the world of radio, though he doesn't spend enough time discussing KJR or it's evolution. The sections on Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, BTO, and Three Dog Night are very entertaining, and perhaps too short. He tells a wonderfully amusing story about a brush with the mafia, that to be honest, had me wondering. The early years of Northwest rock and roll are covered well, but could have been more fully explored, and it would have been great to have heard from the legends of the day, such as Merrilee Rush, Gerald Rosalie, and Buck Ormsby, to say nothing of other djs from KJR or even KOL. He does give some great info about the Spanish Castle dance club from the early to mid sixties. This place was only a legend in my mind, as it was too far away for me to attend any of the dances, and reading about it really brought back my teenaged desires of wishing I had been there. It was very interesting finding out that Pat O'Day began Concerts West, a promotional company that certainly took much of my ticket buying money. I had no idea he owned it or even had anything to do with it. He relates some good stories about his days as a promoter, particularly a story out of Baltimore.

If the reader grew up in the Northwest during the 60s, this book is essential. That, however, is one of its shortcomings. Although O'Day tries to bring in the rest of the country, the scope of the book is so limited to the PNW, that anyone from Kansas will not find much of interest in the book. Also, while Pat O'Day enjoyed huge fame in the PNW, outside of it, except for within the radio industry, he was an unknown. But where moss is known as carpet, O?Day had an infinite number of fans. As the book illustrates, however, he was probably his biggest fan; which is another failing of the book, too much unlimited boasting throughout. We know he was great, the reader can tell he was great, but it would have been a nice exercise in humility, had O?Day not continually reminded us how huge and significant and important and vital he was. Perhaps, the biggest downfall, in my opinion, of It Was All Just Rock n Roll is the cavalcade of stories that have no significance to anybody but Pat O'Day, certainly none to the book. I wondered if he wasn?t getting paid per word for this book, as the stories just kept coming, and many, though well under half, had nothing to do with anything, save boasting about his friendships with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., industry heavies, presidents, maniacal killers, whoever. Pat also leaves out a lengthy period between 1975 and the present. What was happening then? Also, very little of his personal struggles. I had to wonder what became of his first wife. She's virtually never mentioned. I read every word and found myself wanting to skip about a third of the book, as it just seemed to be set on drone. As a co-writer, Jim Ojala doesn't appear to be gifted, but we thank him for at least getting the job done, even if it did take two go rounds.

I'd recommend It Was All Just Rock n Roll II to anybody who wants to relive some old memories, but be prepared for some slogging..

        Book Description

The redesign and revitalization of traditional urban centers is the cutting edge of contemporary urban planning, as evidenced by the intense public and professional attention to the rebuilding of city cores from Berlin to New York City's "Ground Zero." Spanish and Latin American cities have never received the recognition they deserve in the urban revitalization debate, yet they offer a very relevant model for this "return to the center." These cultures have consistently embraced the notion of a city whose identity is grounded in its organic public spaces: plazas, promenades, commercial streets, and parks that invite pedestrian traffic and support a rich civic life. This groundbreaking book explores Spanish, Mexican, and Mexican-American border cities to learn what these urban areas can teach us about effectively using central public spaces to foster civic interaction, neighborhood identity, and a sense of place.

Herzog weaves the book around case studies of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain; Mexico City and Querétaro, Mexico; and the Tijuana-San Diego border metropolis. He examines how each of these urban areas was formed and grew through time, with attention to the design lessons of key public spaces. The book offers original and incisive discussions that challenge current urban thinking about politics and public space, globalization, and the future of privatized communities, from gated suburbs to cyberspace. Herzog argues that well-designed, human-scaled city centers are still vitally necessary for maintaining community and civic life. Applicable to urban renewal projects around the globe, Herzog's book will be important reading for planners, architects, designers, and all citizens interested in creating more livable cities.

          Book Description

Despite talk of a "naked public square," religion has never really lost its place in American public life. As the twenty-first century opened, it was re-emerging in unexpected and paradoxical ways. Religious institutions were considered for expanded roles in welfare and education, at the same time that the limits of religious pluralism---as, for example, in the relation of Islam to American values--became a question of urgent public concern.

Religion Returns to the Public Square;Faith and Policy in America explores how and why religion has to be mixed up with American politics. Uncovering philosophical, historical, legal, and social roots of this relationship, these essays go beyond hot-button issues to reflect on the current interactions and future possibilities of religion and politics in America.

This report is part of the OECD Environmental Performance Review Programme which conducts peer reviews of environmental conditions and progress in each Member country. It scrutinizes efforts to meet both domestic objectives and international commitments. Evaluating progress in reducing the pollution burden, improving natural resource management, integrating environmental and economic policies, and strengthening international cooperation is also central to these reviews. The analyses presented are supported by a broad range of economic and environmental data.
