2 out of 5 stars Who are the authors trying to impress?.......2007-02-26

I simply cannot reccomend a book ,that purports to be about the Jewish people, but then minimizes the importance of the inextricable connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel, which is in fact a major cornesrone of the Jewish peoplehood and faith.
For one thing, why do the authors use the word 'Palestine' to refer to the Land of Israel, from when Avraham the Patriarch entered the Land. The
term Syria Palaestina was in use only since the 2nd century CE, while the term 'The Land of Israel'or 'Eretz Yisrael' had been used for hundreds of years before. If one wants to avoid conflict the term 'Holy Land'or the Levant can be used. But the term Palestine to refer to the Land even before the term was invented is inaccurate and not impartial.
The authors also try too hard to discount the authenticity of the Biblical historical accounts. But the book is readable until one gets to the chapters on Zionism and the rebirth of the State of Israel.
The authors ignore the influx of Arab immigrants into Eretz Yisrael during the British Mandate Period, and also does not mention the Mufti Haj Amin El Husseini, ally and friend of Hilter, and the mastermind of the anti-Jewish pogroms of 1020,1921,1929 and 1936 to 1939.
He then refers to the Arabs 'as equally and sincerely attached to the land of Palestine'.
The Arabs are relative newcomers to the area, and 'Palestine' is a politically loaded and not a neutral term.
He then go's on to point to that to 'give one's complete loyalty to the state' is 'an embarassing 19th century anachronsim.'
Those insulated academics who refer to the nation-state as an anachronism are ignoring the message of recent history, which has seen the birth (or rebirth) of a plethora of nation-sates, from the ruins of enforced multi-national artificial entities : Hence in the last 18 years we have seen the independence of nation-states including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Eritrea and East Timor.
And he also says that 'if national survival is postulated as the nation's highest goal, than it precludes any higher moral value...what nonsense...how can a nation be a light unto the nations, if it does not survive.
Avoiding a second holocaust (i.e the destruction of the State of Israel) has to be the first duty of every Jew.
And the Jewish attachment to the Land of Israel is acenral tenent of the Jewish faith, as well as Jewish identity.
Who are the authors trying to impress by distorting history and Jewish nationhood?

1 out of 5 stars $0.65 for 448 pages says it all. History from non scholars.......2007-02-06

Frankly the book is OK to read if you don't care about facts. Authors clearly

don't have any background in historical analysis and are not scholars on Jewish history. Lots of material based on selective and dubious sources.

Great book an highly praised one is of course the one and the only Paul Johnson, who is the real historian- not those two jokers. If you have an extra $ 0.65 and have any use of 448 useless pages, please buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive account of Jewish History and Religion.......2000-07-03

I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in gaining an insight into the history, practices and literature of the Jewish people.

The book is broken down into 4 parts. In Part 1, Rabbis Goldberg and Rayner explain each phase in Jewish history from Abraham to the holocaust. With regards to their analysis of the biblical period, I was very impressed at their genuine concern with true history rather than just relying on scripture to provide the details. When dealing with each period, they refrained from giving painstaking details and rather delivered a good overview. Those wishing to satisfy their curiosity for details are able to consult the bibliography for further reading.

In Part 2, the Jewish literature for each period is reviewed including the origin of the Torah and an overview of Rabbinic literature such as the Talmud and beyond.

Parts 3 and 4 deal with the theory of Judaism and Jewish practices. These are excellent for those who are being introduced to Judaism for the very first time, or for those who could do with some revision or brushing up on some of the important rituals, laws and festivals.

Overall, I must say this book is informative and a pleasure to read and remains an excellent reference book.

      Book Description

A Mark Twain scholar. An African American philosopher. A lesbian feminist literary critic. A Cuban-American anthropologist. A German immigrant to the United States. A professor of English at a Jesuit university. All share their reflections on the interconnectedness of identities and ideas in People of the Book, the first book in which Jewish-American scholars examine how their Jewishness has shaped and influenced their intellectual endeavors, and how their intellectual work has deepened their sense of themselves as Jews. The contributors are highly productive and respected Jewish American scholars, critics, and teachers from departments of English, history, American studies, Romance literature, Slavic studies, art, womens studies, comparative literature, anthropology, Judaic studies, and philosophy. Nearly an equal mix of men and women, the authors of these analytical and autobiographical essays include white Jews and black Jews; orthodox, conservative, reform, and totally secular Jews; Jews by birth and Jews by conversion; past presidents of the Modern Language Association and American Studies Association and young scholars at the start of their careers. What is fresh and exhilarating about this volume is the articulation of a wide array of very personal views on Jewish identity that are thoughtful, interesting, often moving and inspiring. Most interestingly, they emanate from scholars in secular fields who are uninterested in pleading a cause, staking a claim, organizing a movement, or promoting an agenda, yet whose emotional ties to Jewish peoplehood, values, and ideals are pronounced and eminently worth discovering.Rabbi Stanley M. Wagner, Center for Judaic Studies, University of Denver

5 out of 5 stars Super book for even a younger audience.......2005-12-17

We bought this book 2 years ago for our then 6 year old son, who was an early reader. He took this book to bed with him every night, reading himself to sleep. The pictures are colorful and the text is inviting for young children, even though the age range stated on Amazon is 9 - 12 years. I think the marketing people might want to reconsider the age range toward a younger audience. Teachers and friends would often ask how he knew a particular fact, and he'd answer honestly, from "The Book of Knowledge." The book is now falling apart from use and he's asked for a new one. It still captures his imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for inquisitive young minds.......1999-03-23

This is the best "how come" book that I have run across for my six-year old boy. It covers every topic that young children are likely to be interested in, from space ships and planets to how plants grow. My son browses in it incessantly. The illustrations are excellent, and the succinct explanations for common natural phenomena teach even adults something (e.g., I now grasp exactly how thunder occurs).

My only criticism is that some of the chapters are slightly dated, and a new edition would be warranted to give a more current child's eye perspective on, say, the findings of the Hubble space telescope, computers and the Internet, or environmental challenges.

                            Book Description

Tidal salt marshes are viewed as critical habitats for the production of fish and shellfish. As a result, considerable legislation has been promulgated to conserve and protect these habitats, and much of it is in effect today. The relatively young science of ecological engineering has also emerged, and there are now attempts to reverse centuries-old losses by encouraging sound wetland restoration practices. Today, tens of thousands of hectares of degraded or isolated coastal wetlands are being restored worldwide. Whether restored wetlands reach functional equivalency to `natural' systems is a subject of heated debate.
Equally debatable is the paradigm that depicts tidal salt marshes as the `great engine' that drives much of the secondary production in coastal waters. This view was questioned in the early 1980s by investigators who noted that total carbon export, on the order of 100 to 200 g m -2 y -1 was of much lower magnitude than originally thought. These authors also recognized that some marshes were either net importers of carbon, or showed no net exchange. Thus, the notion of `outwelling' has become but a single element in an evolving view of marsh function and the link between primary and secondary production. The `revisionist' movement was launched in 1979 when stable isotopic ratios of macrophytes and animal tissues were found to be `mismatched'. Some eighteen years later, the view of marsh function is still undergoing additional modification, and we are slowly unraveling the complexities of biogeochemical cycles, nutrient exchange, and the links between primary producers and the marsh/estuary fauna. Yet, since Teal's seminal paper nearly forty years ago, we are not much closer to understanding how marshes work. If anything, we have learned that the story is far more complicated than originally thought. Despite more than four decades of intense research, we do not yet know how salt marshes function as essential habitat, nor do we know the relative contributions to secondary production, both in situ or in the open waters of the estuary.
The theme of this Symposium was to review the status of salt marsh research and revisit the existing paradigm(s) for salt marsh function. Challenge questions were designed to meet the controversy head on: Do marshes support the production of marine transient species? If so, how? Are any of these species marsh obligates? How much of the production takes place in situ versus in open waters of the estuary/coastal zone? Sessions were devoted to reviews of landmark studies, or current findings that advance our knowledge of salt marsh function. A day was also devoted to ecological engineering and wetland restoration papers addressing state-of-the-art methodology and specific case histories. Several challenge papers arguing for and against our ability to restore functional salt marshes led off each session. This volume is intended to serve as a synthesis of our current understanding of the ecological role of salt marshes, and will, it is hoped, pave the way for a new generation of research.

                                Book Description

This is a major compendium of the existing knowledge of the ecology and management of tidal marshes by some of the leading experts in the field. The major theme of the book is the interconnectedness of the marsh, plants, marine organisms, soils and geology, energy and money flow, and legal and management effects on the system. Emphasis is placed throughout on the fact that nature has provided a free service that can either be maintained and enhanced by man or destroyed and forever lost. At a time of declining fisheries, this book points the way to management strategies that are needed to effect improvement.

                                      Description:
As a result of Elymus athericus (Poaceae) invasion in the last 10 years, a major change in vegetation cover has occurred in salt marshes of the Mont Saint-Michel bay (France). Such invasions are known to modify biodiversity and consequently ecosystem proprieties and functions as well as the conservation value of invaded areas. In this study, we especially focus (1) on the impact of the invasive species on the conservation value of the invaded ecosystems and (2) on the impact of mowing in the invaded parts of salt marshes. Among the various biological models, spiders were selected for the present study because they are an abundant, diversified, taxonomic group of generalist predators. Furthermore, data are available on this group since 1984, allowing a comparison of species distribution ranges in salt marshes before and after the E. athericus invasion. This diachronic approach showed that the invasion of salt marshes promoted the progression of non-coastal species, web-building spiders and cursorial spiders, but did not interfere with resident species distributions, finally resulting in higher spider densities and species richness in the entire area. The species composition, functional groups, abundances and densities of spider assemblages were also compared using complementary sampling techniques (i.e., pitfall traps, collecting by hand and quadrat technique) between natural and invaded stations in 2002 for synchronic approach. One main result is that some halophilic species decreased in abundances and densities in invaded plots, which is thought to alter the marine character of salt marsh arthropod assemblages. Lastly, mowing, by reducing non-coastal species and enhancing halophilic ones, tends to reduce the negative effects of Elymus on salt marsh conservation value. The relation between the treatments tested (invasive species and mowing) and the spider assemblages by changes in environmental variables confirms the high value of this group as bioindicators.
