    Book Description

In The Great Explorers--an abridgement of his two-volume magnum opus, The European Discovery of America--the late Samuel Eliot Morison, one of the most eminent American historians of the 20th century, vividly describes the early voyages that led to the discovery of the New World. Based on Morison's own trips, by plane, to the places the early discoverers landed, and on massive research into their maps, travelogues, and means of navigation, it tells, as no other book does, what the experience of these early explorers was. Morison describes their fear of sailing uncharted waters, their encounters with natives, their joy--and surprise--at discovering new land, and enriches his story with the photographs and maps he made while retracing the great voyages.

5 out of 5 stars A Superior Example of Both Scholarship and Writing.......2001-10-27

As usual Morison's work is a superior example of both scholarship and writing. Many of his sources for research were not written in English since most of the historians who have studied the voyages of discovery south of the Caribbean have been either Spaniards, Portuguese, Brazilians, Uruguayans, Chileans or Paraguayans.

4 out of 5 stars Who would not love a book like this.......2001-04-29

The discovery of the new world is one of the most exciting periods to study. Here is a book that has not only has Drake, Magellan, and Columbus but has the story of less famous mariners as well. This is not a book that has to be read all at once. You can read about one of the explorers and when you are sick of reading about storms and starvation put it aside for awhile.

I homeschool my children, and in order for them to grasp information, the presentation needs to be more exciting. I think there should be better illustrations in the book and I wish it was easier to read for the average child. All the historical information is there in the book. If one lacked a better book this would suffice.

            Book Description

The journal of James Colnett is the last unpublished account of the early maritime fur trade on the Northwest Coast. Between 1786 and 1789, Colnett's expedition traversed the coast from Prince William Sound to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Its members were the first Europeans to encounter the Tsimshian and the southern Heiltsuk, and the first to land on the southern Queen Charlotte Islands.

The journal is reproduced with full scholarly apparatus, as well as with extracts from a second journal by Andrew Bracey Taylor, 3rd mate on one of the ships in Colnett's command. Focusing on the expedition's remarkable encounters with the Native peoples of the Northwest Coast, Galois' introductory essay also addresses the geopolitical context of the voyage and the intellectual background that shaped the writing of the journals.

This fascinating account gives us a new understanding of early European presence in the Northwest and of Native responses to these developments. It will interest historians, geographers, and ethnographers of the Northwest Coast and beyond.

While marketing reasons exist for flashy titles, difficulty sets in when both the title and subtitle promise something they can't deliver-such is the case with F. David Peat's Philosopher's Stone.

A woefully unsatisfying read, Peat's book is a vague rhapsody through eight chapters loosely connected to quantum physics, chaos theory, and the nature of scientific inquiry, but strongly tied to mysticism (Eastern, Western, and other) and New Age philosophy. The saying goes that one should not judge a book by its cover, but that maxim does not apply to the excerpts from reviews printed on back and inside covers to promote a book; thus one should cautiously note that The Philosopher's Stone was praised by the authors of Space, Time and Medicine, Recovering the Soul, Creating Alternative Futures, Parallel Universes, and The Eagle's Quest. The book's greatest fault is not its subject matter, but its circular logic, unsupported claims, and conclusions that stand in conflict with the material covered.

This is unfortunate precisely because Peat's book does contain sparks that could lead to a more rigorous, insightful, and provocative text, such as the growth of crystals, superconductors and superfluids, and the differences between scientific and human-perceptual models of space and time; instead of exploring these topics in detail and then teasing out wasy in which they point toward the book's thesis, they are merely superficial evidence for a conclusion the author never doubted. When scientists write about the history and philosophy of science, an in-depth knowledge the history and philosophy of science should be a prerequisite. Peat cites Bacon and Newton, but leaves out Hume and Kant-two philosophers important not because they are "correct" but because they deal with the questions of time, space, and causality at stake in quantum mechanics (QM). The author, however, engages in a naive romanticism by referring constantly to "ancient wisdom" (of Native Americans, Asian peoples, and others), by assuming an a-critical position regarding mankind's supposed Ur-connectedness with nature, and by misrepresenting both the harmony of the medieval world and the hyper-rationalism of the Renaissance and Enlightenment.

Although not entirely clear, Peat's explanation of fractals and of "fractional dimensions" is refreshing, as is his exposition of the Verhulst equation in connection with the size of insect colonies. Other books, however, provide more lucid discussions of strange attractors and non-linear dynamics in general. The seventh chapter is the point at which "chaos" makes its first and only appearance in the book; unfortunately it is not truly taken into account in the book's final chapter in which the author proposes an ethics of "gentle action." The Jungian concept of "synchronicity" (the subject and title of Peat's previous book) is poorly developed and vaguely defined here, although the author throws around the term uncritically in every chapter: phenomenon after phenomenon is labeled an "example of synchronicity." David Bohm's "implicate order" likewise suffers from superficial coverage; instead, one should read Bohm's own works, or get a good introduction in Peat's biography of Bohm, Infinite Potential (Addison-Wesley, 1997), a vastly superior book.

General statements about the nature of mind and consciousness, and of nature itself, will strike many readers as dogmatic, naive, and unsupported by any evidence in the book; other books that discuss the failures of artificial intelligence (AI), for example, describe or at least cite relevant efforts and experiments, and then conclude that computers and computing as we understand them are not able to imitate the mind-Peat states this as a categorical impossibility. The book begins with an assertion of the intrinsic and essential meaningfulness of the universe, and whenever scientific results (e.g. the double-slit experiment in QM) threaten objective truth and meaning, Peat searches for a way to salvage meaning, for he ontologizes meaning in such a way that it is connected with truth. The Philosopher's Stone rightly calls into question the truth-claims of "traditional" science-a task undertaken more credibly in other works-but insists upon its own truthfulness; thus it is neither insightful nor refreshing, neither challenging nor provocative.

This book is loaded. It discusses a plethora of fascinating scientific topics, and finds a way to connect with all of our living universe in able to make meaning of it all. Though some of what it includes may be rather difficult subjects, what the book puts forth is easy to understand... I'm no scientist and I apprectiated what was said. Synchronicity to Chaos Theory to Quantum Physics to phase space to unitary transformations and back. Many metaphors and diagrams are used to illustrate his concepts simply. It kept me up 'til 2 AM on a school night, it must be good!! Bond with our universe and be alive!!!

                5 out of 5 stars Cougar or grizzly - I'll be prepared.......2005-04-01

I hope I never have to confront a grizzly bear or a cougar, but given there are grizzly bears near our ski condo and cougars have been seen in a local nature preserve I'm not taking chances.

You probably know the basics of hanging your food in a tree and not letting bears see your cooler in your car. This little book goes way beyond the basics. With a chapter per animal, it explains animal behavior and takes you through your options. You can find out whether a bear is predatory, how to select a campsite and what a cougar does before it pounces. Be careful of those buffalo in Yellowstone - it lists the other parks where you might find them too. It also tells you about javelinas - a risk I had never considered.

There is an excellent section on pepper spray. It has good statistics - like the weight of a moose or the number of people that die of rabies. Your odds of getting eaten alive are pretty low - but why take chances. As it says "Hiking in grizzly country is dangerous and that's all there is to it."

Read this book - the techniques for each animal are different.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Gem........2000-04-13

I read this book for the first time 20 years ago and am constantly refering to it. It is truly one of my favorite books of any kind. If you are at all interested in wildlife or nature this book is a must-read. Mr. Caras is well informed and writes with a keen insight.

A fascinating book that never bores, but never trivializes or sensationalizes. If you think you might be interested in this book, I am sure that you will find it richly rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have ever read about the truth about animals.......1997-10-11

I read this book while in high school in the 1960s. It is by far the best book I have ever read concerning animals and their interaction with man. It is very factual and I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to know the truth about animals. I am saddened that it is out of print and hard to find.

                  Book Description

The year 2000 saw a phenomenal increase in bear attacks on humans. Both black and grizzly bears across the continent attacked humans at an astonishing rate. Is this the result of continuing intrusion into wild habitats by humans, or are other invironmental or climatic factors at play? In Bear vs Man, writer-photographer Brad Garfield chronicles resent bear attacks through dramatic photographs and text, interviewing the victims who survived, and the search crews of those who didn't. Along with the attack stories, Garfield discusses the various reasons for the alarming increase in the attacks, instructs readers on new methods and equiptment that can protect people during an attack, and offers tips on how to behave traveling in bear country so as not to become a victim. Lastly, he compiles his knowledge of how to photograph bears in the wild while still remaining safe and causing no harm to these amazingly powerful animals.

                  2 out of 5 stars Dangerous advice.......2005-03-22

Garfield tell photographers they should never approach a sow with cubs, but says nothing about the danger of approaching a solitary male or female. Is it OK to approach a solitary bear? No. At some point you'll encroach on the bear's personal space and force it to fight or flee. You don't want to provoke a charge from a male grizzly, do you? You don't want to drive a female black bear away from berries, acorns or some other food source, do you? It's dangerous and unethical to approach any bear for a photograph. If Garfield doesn't know this, you can imagine all the other mistakes in this book.

Cover to Cover this book grabs you and doesn't let you go until you finish it. It is filled with beautiful photography and hair-raising accounts between man and beast. It is a great read...

3 out of 5 stars Bear vs Man.......2001-08-31

This book chronicles recent attacks in a straight forward but not very interesting or original way. The stories of the attacks are told second hand as they were told originally. I know this as my husband is one of the featured chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Chronicles many recent bear attacks.......2001-05-18

There's been an increase in the amount of incidents involving bears and men, and Brad Garfield's Bear vs. Man chronicles many of these recent bear attacks, with photos and stories told by victims who survived. Insights on bear behavior accompany advice on what to do when a bear is encountered.
