Book Description
Long out of print, Jules Michelet's classic study of medieval superstition has been reprinted in this edition to bring the general public's attention to one of the truly great sociological works of modern times.
Michelet brilliantly recreates the Europe of the Middle Ages, the centuries of fierce religious intolerance, the Inquisition and the auto-da-fe.
He depicts the feudal barons, the great manors, the fiefs and serfs... and the witches, hobgoblins and wizards of whom the masses lived in mortal fear.
Michelet draws flaming word pictures of the witch hunts, the Black Masses, the reign of Satan, and the weird rites of the damned. Here is the age of unbridled pleasure and sensuality, of luxury beyond imagination and squalor beyond endurance. Here is the time when a girl might be accused of witchcraft merely if she were young and pretty and did not survive the test of immersion in water or boiling oil. Here is the day of beatings, floggings, tortures and summary decapitations.
Encyclopedia Britannica called the book, "The most important work on medieval superstition yet written." It is indeed one of the great works on the Age of Darkness.
Customer Reviews:
A true masterpiece............2005-11-12
This book is breataking in it's lyrical prose and subject matter. It reads almost like a grand novel.
I honestly have read nothing like it, ever! I have 2 copies of it, the 1st one I got was so large and I wanted to tote it around with me so I got a small PB version.
This is a not to be missed study, story, fairytale like work.
What in the world was the last reviewer taking?.......2005-10-24
Satan as Hero? Michelet a Satanist? The book is the basis for a group of Michelet Satanists? Oh for pete's sake. What some people think is "real" continues to astound me, and you'd think after all these years my astounder would have been pretty much astounded out. But no. Once again, someone expresses a belief so unfounded and so, well, stupid, there I go, getting astounded again. Too bad they wrote it yonks ago. Chances are they won't be reading this. In any case, this book, of which I have an ancient falling apart copy with a truly lurid cover, is a brilliant bit of historical writing. No pulling punches, no shying away from what the Church might think or say (and there was a time not so long ago, one had to be damned careful of old Popey), this book stands even now as a Classic on the Dark Ages. Were we nuts then? You bet. Are we nuts now? Yes. In a different kind of way, but getting nuttier by the day. Are we headed for a new Dark Age? Might be. Timely this book, no matter how long ago it was written. Dripping with blood and lust and hypocrisy and cruelty...that was us. Now we're dripping with greed and a casual indifference to the suffering of others, not to mention the suffering of animals and the earth itself. What do we care when scads of us are so crazed we think something called the Rapture is coming to take us away.
Satan is here and Satan is us.
Satan as hero.......2002-10-31
This book isn't so much a history book as it is a book by an individual Satanist elaborating his own historically-based reasons for joining the Devil's side. This book predates the Church of Satan by over a century, and forms the bases of the attitudes and ideas of "Michelet Satanism."
A Desperate Plea for Feminism (or at least Humanism).......2000-10-15
Some stuff never quits. And, it seems some stuff never starts, when it should, anyway. This book is a great example of both, I think. Strangely contemporary in its impact, this book is a startlingly empathic study of, well - oppressed women way back then - I mean just ordinary women trying to live their lives. These women are much more like us than is the society around them; I owe this emphasis much to the genius of Michelet. Not to be read by thrill seekers but by lovers of humanity and seekers of sociological truth, I guarantee you a very rich experience indeed. I'm a community radio producer and on my next show (just before Hallloween) I am going to try to read excerpts from this book mixed with pieces from Richard Thompson and Maddy Prior; any other suggestions?

An invaluable translation.......2007-08-30
The life of the maid is not only well told by the author, but the translator, the late Albert Guerard (himself an historian and critic of great stature), has included an introduction and notes about the life, and the thoughts of Michelet that are important to the modern reader.
This short work is well worth owning. Anyone interested in France, the Middle Ages, the Hundred Years War, or the life of an important woman in Christendom will find this, now classic work, a gemstone.
A wonderful story telling a details of Joans life.......2000-07-19
this is the most inspiring book i have ever read. It told about Joan's religous life and human life. This book I recomend to everybody above 15.

An Abrams favorite, now available in a new, fun format!
When Yann Arthus-Bertrand's astonishing book of photographs of domestic livestock and their breeders first appeared in 1999, The New York Times Book Review hailed this remarkable treasure as "a curiously appealing blend of art with kitsch...drama tinged with comedy." Now this wonderfully whimsical book is being rereleased in a fun new format.

Love it.......2007-08-14
I gave this book to my Dad for Father's Day, years ago. Whenever I go to his house, it's there and I have to look through it again. Get a hardcover copy if you can ... it will wear out otherwise. :-)
I never tire of looking at this book.......2006-04-15
I'm not from a rural background, nor do I have any experience of animal husbandry, nor do I even have much interest in photography, but when I first saw this book in a store it simply drew me in.
Inside you will find page after page of superbly composed, full-colour photographs of various livestock breeds pictured with owners, owners' children or handlers from all over Europe, even some from as far away as Argentina. On some pages you will see soft-haired, placid sheep, on others tall and elegant horses, plump pigs whose faces almost seem to show amusement, graceful, homely-looking cows, on some occasions even goats or donkeys. Yet my personal favourites are the pictures of prize bulls. These handsome creatures seem to exude power, yet starkly defy their fearsome reputation as they stand patiently with their handlers, some of whom are just tiny children.
Yann Arthus-Bertrand's photographic juxtapositions of animal and master are often endearing, sometimes humourous, but crucially they are never, however often you happen to glance at them, dull. This book is not just a portfolio. Look through it and it will warm your heart.

Marvelous photographs of magnificent animals!.......1999-12-15
Arthus-Bertrand displays the most amazing photographs of breeding quality livestock that I have ever seen. Anyone who appreciates animal husbandry, agronomy, or farm animals in general will love this book. The photographs of bulls are exceptional!
A compelling book of portraits -- animals and their keepers........1999-09-25
This is the only photography book I've ever purchased, simply because I couldn't put it down in the bookstore. Since buying the book, I've passed it around to several friends -- some who are familiar with livestock -- and some who are not. Makes no difference. It's impossible to look at this book without going through the whole thing, page by beautiful page. The animals look strangely like their owners (or is it the other way around?). Each portrait is stark and simple, drawing your eye to the relationship between animal and handler. Buy this book. You won't regret it. Outstanding gift!

LOUIS XV.......2006-11-10
This is a well researched book on Louis XV, it's odd that the author chose only a part of his long reign..Louis did not die until 1774. Honestly the women in his life were always the story..the machiavellian Pompadour and the beautiful de Berry, the latter's head rolled during the Revolution. The court under Louis XV was fasciating, all the intregue and the seeds that sewed the Revolution. Louis had the misfortune of following his grandfather, the great Louis XIV, and he rose to the thrown at five, he really never had a chance, but frankly he did not try very hard either, the real power was always in the hands of Pompadour and de Berry, they controled the access to the King, for better or worst. His reign was summed up when he so famously said, "After me the deluge".

Published in France in 1954, Roland Barthes's Michelet inspired a revival of interest in the great 19th century French historian. Neither a biography nor a critique, Michelet is Barthes's effort to give the reader a sense of the whole man.

Customer Reviews:
An absolute "must-have" for anyone seeking to create successful ads.......2007-01-06
Award-winning advertising industry insider of 35 years John Michelet presents Advertising: Industry in Peril, a no-nonsense guide to the difference between effective and utterly worthless advertising. Advertising: Industry in Peril discusses why sales are not a measure of advertising success, the massive cost of ineffective advertising, and common problems and blunders plaguing the advertising industry from mentioning the competition too often (thereby giving the competition free advertising!) to producing "onezies" rather than coordinated ad campaign. The highlight of Advertising: Industry in Peril are the fifteen expert points to creating better advertising, such as "Make a Big Promise and reasons to believe it", "Demonstrate", and "Put messaging before entertaining". In an industry with little certification, where "on-the-job training" (i.e. "learn the hard way") is the norm, and there are few official distinctions between trained professionals and amateurs sporting business cards, Advertising: Industry in Peril is an absolute "must-have" for anyone seeking to create successful ads, whether independently, for their own small business, or as a branch of a larger business, and especially vital for anyone responsible for reviewing or approving ads for a corporation.

Book Description
Hearing History is a long-needed introduction to the basic tenets of what is variously termed historical acoustemology, auditory culture, or aural history. Gathering twenty-one of the field's most important writings, this volume will deepen and broaden our understanding of changing perceptions of sound and hearing and the ongoing education of our senses. The essays stimulate thinking on key questions: What is aural history? Why has vision tended to triumph over hearing in historical accounts? How might we begin to reclaim the sounds of the past?
With theoretical and practical essays on the history of sound and hearing in Europe and the United States, the book draws on historical approaches ranging from empiricism to postmodernism. Some essays show the historian of technology at work, others highlight how military, social, intellectual, and cultural historians have tackled historical acoustemologies. Investigating soundscapes that include a Puritan meetinghouse in colonial New England, the belfries of a French village at the close of the Old Regime, the court hall of Elizabeth I, and a Civil War battlefield, the essays vary just as widely in their topics, which include noise as a marker of social and cultural differences, the privileging of music as the sound of art, the persistence of Aristotelian ideas of sound into the seventeenth century, developments in sound related to medical practice, the advent of sound-recording technology, and noise pollution.
This important new anthology will help us to contextualize the past within the larger rubric of all of the senses and thus free mainstream historical writing from the powerful but blinding focus on vision alone.

Customer Reviews:
Cool!.......2007-10-13
This is a fascinating book with lots of cool illustrations and diagrams. If you have kids, or still are one, buy this book. It's really neat.
The Space Shuttle Operator's Manual-Revised Edition .......2006-10-24
I agree with most of the above comments regarding this book, other than the one about NASA propaganda, which I did not see in this book. While, I was skeptical at first when I first ordered it thinking that the book was going to be very basic, I was later very impressed with the detail that the book actualy went into on how the shuttle works and how one lives and works in space. I would caution though, that if you teach from this book that you make sure the shuttle systems and payloads are up to date by checking he Nasa websites. Because of its publishing date, this book does not deal with the Multifunctional Electronic Display Subsystem (MEDS), or "glass cockpit," that is on the three remaining orbiters. The MEDS system replaced the 32 analog gauges and four cathode ray tube monitors in the old cockpit with 11 state-of-the-art, full-color flat panel displays to reduce the pilot's workload. The first glass cockpit was installed in Shuttle Atlantis in 2000. Since this book was revised in 1988, the MEDS system is not mentioned in it. Also, some of the payloads mentioned in the book are out of date, so before you teach from this book, please make sure that you follow-up and update your teaching material. Overall, well worth the money as a teaching and learning aid.
As Good As it Gets.......2005-09-06
The book I ordered was delivered in the estimated time frame and was in the exact condition they said it was in. Other than the shipping taking a few more days than wanted it was excellent service.
So, You Want To Be An Astronaut?.......2003-11-04
This is the best book on how to live, work, and live in space. It tells you all about the buttons, the menus, the toilets, the suits, etc. It even has like 7 pages for the launch with the dialogues and everything starting at T-minus 5 hours to T+plus 48 minutes. It has the same for landing, too. It tells you what's inside the shuttle, and where the stuff is located. It even describes certain space missions like Spacelab, and more! If you want to study space shuttles and become an astronaut, this book is a must! I love it! I can't stop putting it down!
The Perfect Shuttle Reference.......2003-02-05
This book is the best overview and reference manual on the shuttle. As you can see from the "Look Inside" function, and by the index, it covers the whole nine yards. It focuses specifically on the orbiter, and covers all aspects of shuttle missions from launch to landing.
As an aspiring sci-fi writer, I found this book to be the perfect reference. It has raw statistics, such as orbiter length, cargo bay volume, and it even goes over the meals and menus and how they are prepared. It also goes in to the history of the orbiters, and the names of the ever shrinking shuttle fleet.
Several sections deal with the now-defunct Spacelab modules. The Spacelab was the shuttle equivalent of a camper shell that sat in the cargo bay. It turned the shuttle into a mini space-station, and had several interchangeable modules. One section was a pressurized module with a battery of experiments, which was connected to the shuttle cockpit. Other sections included a multi-use pallet, and an experimental pallet. This Spacelab was retired in 1997, and has been replaced by the Spacehab modules, which was on the Columbia when it broke-up over Texas.
This book is written in the normal "Basic English" of instruction manuals, and can be understood by elementary school children. It also has many diagrams and pictures, which save many thousands of words of descriptions.
By the way, this book does explain how the space lavatory. In case you are curious, it is a normal commode with vacuum suction, although I have heard stories that it can smell at times.
This book's one weakness is that it is a bit impersonal. If you want to know about the emotions and reactions to life in spaces, another book may be better, such as Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff," of Homer Hickam's "Back to the Moon.". As you read this book, you must supply your own excitement and emotion to this book, since it is an operator's manual. It reads a bit like an encyclopedia, or dictionary, and not a novel.
After reading and referencing this book, I felt as if I had been on board!

Book Description
Tracking the many moods of the tiger, this book traces the progress of efforts to save the magnificent animal in India. Documenting tiger watching in Ranthambhore from the 1970s to the late 1990s, the second, enhanced edition discusses the tiger tragedy of winter-spring 2004-5 and argues for new and more radical initiatives to protect the animal and, by extension, wilderness itself. An impassioned plea for greater involvement of administrators and general public alike, this book is a must read for tiger enthusiasts, animal lovers, environmentalists, and the general reader.
