The definitive resource on Japan, wrapped like a candy........1996-10-19

Japan: An llustrated Encyclopedia is a condensed two-volume offspring of a venerable predecessor. Kodansha first published its 10-volume Encyclopedia of Japan in 1985. It was a landmark reference work that immediately made space for itself on the shelves of every major library in the world. It also became at once the standard by which all other reference material on Japan is judged. Illustrated was introduced specifically for homes and libraries that wished for the wealth of the original in a more manageable format. It includes high-quality colour photographs, charts, and tables, and raises the standards of its near-perfect parent to even higher levels. The text of articles has been taken directly from the parent and this ensures the same high quality of research. The articles are written by renowned academics and scholars, Japanese as well as others. They represent a fair range of points-of-view that lends objectivity as well as variety to this beautiful and entertaining work. Some issues, such as Japan's role in the War and the conduct of the war crimes trial, are approached from a novel standpoint that does justice to all parties involved. All in all, Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia is as much as can be said, and as beautifully, about a nation as complex and unique as Japan in two handy cloth-bound volumes.

Kamon or family crests are art motifs, which have been adopted as insignia by families and handed down through the ages. The heraldic emblems of Japan are simpler and aesthetically finer than European coats of arms. The clarity and elegance of kamon are now highly valued throughout the world as a
new design or motif, and applied widely in various ways in such fields as handicraft, interior and textile designs.

In this book, 4,080 traditional crests are collected. The Yin (white on a black background) of each crest is presented on the left page, and the Yang (reversed motif) on the right page. Accordingly, the total number of motifs comes to 8,160. All the designs are free of copyright, so you can use them

A Wonderful Resource...with one Fault.......2006-11-03

This is a WONDERFUL resource for those who are looking for information on Japanese Family Crests (or "mon"). The book groups the different crests by "type" such as crests of plants, animals, insects and things like everyday objects. Also there are many examples grouped by specific things, like those crests of the "ume" or "plum" blossom, of which there are many variations.

The weak point of this book is that the family names that these crests belong to are only shown in Japanese Kanji and there is no English translation, so if you are trying to do research on a specific family's (or business' crest as some businesses later in Edo history and pre-WWII Japan used crests as well, an example being the large solid "circle" in white on the lamps and such of the geisha district of the "Gion" in Kyoto) and you do not read kanji then you will not be able to figure out which family or business the crest belonged to.

I would have given this resource book five stars if they had translated the kanji of the names that belong to the crests (at least those that are well known, such as the various samurai daimyo family crests and of course the Tokugawa family crest, etc.), but since they did not, I'm only giving this book a four out of five stars.

As far as I can tell though, it is the ONLY reasonably priced book currently being published that has ANY English language in it at all on this subject and which is so full of the actual pictures of the crests, which makes it pretty invaluable if you are trying to match crests on antique kimono (which is what I originally bought it for) and you can find a way to scan the kanji under the crest and then send it to someone that does read it so that you can find out where your kimono (or other antique item) came from.

Excellent Reference Book.......2006-03-25

If you're into anything Japanese then this is a very good reference book to have lying nearby. It catalogs thousands of family crests and they're indexed by motif, which makes it relatively painless to look a crest up. Do be advised that all the crest names in this tome are in katakana (Japanese syllable symbols) so you will need familiarity with katakana (or yet another handy reference tome at your side) in order to determine what family each crest represents.

Dollar for dollar, though, you cannot get a better deal than this book which has about 400 pages worth of crests, with 20 crests per page. Each crest appears twice, though, so it comes to about 4000 crests, all told.

JOHN FRANKLIN, born in 1786. Many naval experiences, including Trafalgar, before heading an expedition across northern Canada in 1819. Elected F.R.S. and knighted after a second expedition. Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen;s Land, 1836 to 1843. Last expedition, 1845, was lost, and Franklin died in 1847 near the Arctic. Subsequent investigations have established him as the discoverer of the North-West Passage.

Journey to the Polar Sea.......2001-04-23

This book was a very interesting true story of several British naval officers and their guides who travelled from Hudson Bay into the interior of Canada and up the Coppermine River to the northern coast of the North America. This expedition took several years. As their journey progressed so did the sufferings they endured. Several members of the group died of starvation and other causes. One was murdered and his killer was shot. It was incredible that anyone survived.

Anyone interested in the Arctic exploration and early Native Americans will enjoy this book. The author, Sir John Franklin, was a fearless explorer who died on a subsequent Arctic mission. He descibes his meetings with the traders and local inhabitants in great detail. He relied in large part on local Native Americans as guides and hunters. It was his intention to meet with the Eskimo people, who avoided all contact with his group. The Native Americans refused to accompany the group all the way north due to their fear of the Eskimos. I highly recommend this book.

A masterpiece.......2004-03-18

It isn't often that one comes across books of this calibre: Friedman has put together nothing short of a masterpiece. His depth and clarity of exposition are laudable, and so are his findings.

In an impressive effort, Friedman has found his way through the intricate and tangled maze--or mess--that spacetime physics and philosophy has become. The most important revelation to be learnt is in what sense theoretical spacetime remains an absolute and literal reality despite its unobservability: on the one hand, general relativity did not achieve a relativization of all motion (or Mach's programme), and in it acceleration remains an absolute concept; on the other, spacetime can be granted physical reality (rather than it being a mere mathematical representation) due to its theoretical unifying power.

Friedman's book exceeded my already high expectations. In a time in which lousy scientific writing has become commonplace, it is an utmost pleasure to stumble upon a book such as this one. To put it in a nutshell, this book is enlightening in an extraordinary way. Superb!

Comfort food for the scientific scrounger.......2001-05-27

The complexity of the mathematics of General Relativity produce an unfortunate side-effect: however satisfying they are from an aesthetic viewpoint, dealing with their rigour obscures the philosophical basis of their development.

Friedman does an admirable job of investigating the currents of early twentieth century thought that led Einstein down the particular road he chose, via a number of useful visualizations made by clear and surprisingly elegant prose and clean math, without dumbing down the science involved in the name of science 'popularization.'

The primary aim of this monograph is to clarify the undefined primitive concepts and the axioms which form the basis of Einstein's theory of special relativity. Minkowski space-time is developed from a set of independent axioms, stated in terms of a single relation of betweenness. It is shown that all models are isomorphic to the usual coordinate model, and the axioms are consistent relative to the reals.

In the analysis and synthesis of contemporary systems, engineers and scientists are frequently confronted with increasingly complex models that may simultaneously include components whose states evolve along continuous time and discrete instants; components whose descriptions may exhibit nonlinearities, time lags, transportation delays, hysteresis effects, and uncertainties in parameters; and components that cannot be described by various classical equations, as in the case of discrete-event systems, logic commands, and Petri nets. The qualitative analysis of such systems requires results for finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional systems; continuous-time and discrete-time systems; continuous continuous-time and discontinuous continuous-time systems; and hybrid systems involving a mixture of continuous and discrete dynamics.
Filling a gap in the literature, this textbook presents the first comprehensive stability analysis of all the major types of system models described above. Throughout the book, the applicability of the developed theory is demonstrated by means of many specific examples and applications to important classes of systems, including digital control systems, nonlinear regulator systems, pulse-width-modulated feedback control systems, artificial neural networks (with and without time delays), digital signal processing, a class of discrete-event systems (with applications to manufacturing and computer load balancing problems) and a multicore nuclear reactor model.
The book covers the following four general topics:

* Representation and modeling of dynamical systems of the types described above
* Presentation of Lyapunov and Lagrange stability theory for dynamical systems defined on general metric spaces
* Specialization of this stability theory to finite-dimensional dynamical systems
