Book Description

The end of the Great War did not bring peace to Russia. A civil war developed between the Bolsheviks and the 'White Russians' who represented the old Czarist order. A 'coalition' of 16 nations including Britain, America and France became involved on numerous fronts in support of the White Russians. The result was defeat and failure for the coalition forces.

This little known and ill-fated enterprise was surprisingly costly in political and military terms. Indeed the intervention lead to precisely the opposite result to that intended.

4 out of 5 stars Review from The Spectator July 24, 2004.......2005-04-20

Review from The Spectator July 24, 2004:

Miles Hudson is a military historian with several interesting books to his credit, especially his War and the Media (1981), written with Field Marshal Sir John Stanier.

He gives his latest book the subtitle 'A Cautionary Tale', and so indeed it is. It tells the story of the various forces sent to Russia in 1918-19 by the Allies for what seemed at the time good reasons. Each was a separate expedition within the vast geographical range of Russia's western frontier.

Eventually all of them ended in humiliating failure, and their presence was used by the Bolsheviks (or Bolos as they were often called at the time) as patriotic propaganda in their struggle to win their own power.

The British were of course not alone in this venture (except in the Baltic sector). The nationalities of the forces engaged were:

55,000 Czechs
12,000 Poles
4,000 Serbs
4,000 Romanians
2,000 Italians
1,600 British
760 French
28,000 Japanese (later increased to 70,000)
7,500 Americans
4,000 Canadians

Hudson's researches cover a wide range of British sources, especially in the Imperial War Museum and in regimental archives. He has also had access to some personal reminiscences including those of his own father who had a very gallant record in the first world war. The general picture that emerges is decidedly confused, though there were creditable episodes, some of them involving men of outstanding ability such as General Ironside and General Alexander. Hudson has an eye for picturesque or amusing detail and he tells a number of extraordinary tales of adventure, some of which could probably be matched by the archives of other nationalities. However, the want of a consistent policy agreed among the participants is all too clear and it is hardly surprising that it all ended in tears.

In his concluding chapter, Hudson reverts to his main theme. He condemns the Allied intervention as having been embarked on without adequate care or sound information about the true situation in Russia and without any attempt to reach even the minimum agreement among the participants about the objectives of such a policy. Nor does it seem to have been realised that the state of morale of many of the armed forces of the Allies was dangerously low after the appalling losses in France. The upshot of the intervention was failure in every sector, even though the course of events included some skilful and courageous actions.

I found this a most enjoyable book, written in a lucid and straightforward style. It is well produced and illustrated with good maps and photographs.

    Book Description

In January 1923 French and Belgian forces occupied Germany's Ruhr District and seized its prime industrial assets in lieu of unpaid reparations. This unilateral attempt to enforce the crumbling Versailles settlement precipitated a wider struggle for long-term control of Western Germany and ultimately for the very survival of the Weimar Republic. The Ruhr Crisis is the first comprehensive account of a definitive and mutually self-defeating confrontation, which marked one of the great untold tragedies of European history yet, paradoxically, sowed the seeds of Franco-German reconciliation after 1949. It demonstrates how and why the people of the Ruhr waged a grass-roots mass campaign of passive resistance against the invaders, and evaluates the human and political price of their ultimate failure. To this end, the author exploits a broad range of local and regional sources, many for the first time, to bring together the high politics of the crisis and intimate, often disturbing, accounts of the daily struggle in the mines, towns, and villages of the Ruhr. It is a ground-breaking contribution to the history of inter-war Germany.

      Book Description

It has been increasingly realized by sedimentologists in the petroleum industry and academia that integration of ichnological information into sedimentological models, and vice versa, is one of the main means by which we can improve our understanding of ancient depositional environments. This volume aims to provide an analytical review of the ichnology of all major depositional environments and the use of ichnology in biostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic analysis, as well as highly refined palaeoenvironmental studies. The remit of the book is achieved through a combination of review articles and novel research papers that outline methodologies and protocols for improving our understanding of ancient palaeoenvironments. Trace fossils from microscopic borings to dinosaur footprints are considered.

The comprehensive coverage of ancient depositional environments means that the book will be of use as a course text for undergraduates as well as an invaluable reference text for all interested in ichnology whether they are ichnologists, sedimentologists or petroleum geologists by trade.

4 out of 5 stars An Up-to-Date Presentation of Trace Fossils.......2006-09-21

Various authors concentrate on different ichnofossils. I will briefly discuss only two of them.

Droser et al. discuss such trace fossils as Rusophycus and Cruziana, both of which are constructed below the sediment-water interface (p. 393). There are different pathways for the construction of these fossils, depending upon such things as the successive removal of seafloor sand and/or mud, followed by redeposition of either or both sediments. One can infer that the sediment must have been firm enough to preserve the leg imprints of trilobites, yet shallow enough to have underwent subsequent seafloor erosion.

McIlroy (p. 6) supports a modified version of the Seilacherian ichnofacies. He allows for there to be a "patchwork", rather than straightforward succession, of these ichnofacies. This "patchwork" pattern is caused by such things as local seafloor variations in sediment firmness, energy level, bathymetry, etc.

The second book in the Environ-mental Health Fund Series.

      5 out of 5 stars Riveted.......2005-01-04

Exposing chemical industry crime and the personal stories that make their poisoning of the world real to us, Trespass Against Us takes on Dow Chemical. The book was launched on the 20th Anniversary of the Bhopal Chemical Disaster that stole the lives of 22,000 people and counting. Social justice organizers hope the book will help spur Dow to present its subsidiary Union Carbide to the Indian Courts to face the criminal charges against them.

Asserting that it is a human right to be born and live free of manmade chemicals which enter our bodies without our permission; Doyle makes the case that Dow is guilty of legal and ethical trespass. The book chronicles the poisoning Dow has been responsible for through quality investigative journalism, while telling the story of dioxin, Agent Orange, and silicone breast implants. The lesser known stories of plastic wrap, pesticides, dry cleaning chemicals and myriad of other products that we use every day and inhabit our bodies are also told.

The book is both a human story and a thorough resource for anyone who wants to understand Dow's seemingly endless quest for power and the toxics that have made it the largest chemical company in the world. On a more human scale, the book helps one understand the connection between the subtle impacts of chemicals in the world on our health from asthma and endometriosis to cancer. I think this connection is the most important one in made in the book, the personal stories of suffering that are caused by Dow are not associated with everyday pollution and they should be. It is impossible to live in this modern world today and be totally untouched by Dow. The current administration would have us believe that Dow has more of a right to pollute than a child with Dow- triggered cancer has to live. The story of how this could happen in just 100 years is worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars A wealth of information that could use better editing........2004-11-29

This book reports on the history of those who have been adversely affected by Dow's products, byproducts, and practices, especially from the forties onward. The three main topics are workplace (un)safety, hazardous products, and toxic waste. It's a bit disjointed, though. Most chapters focus on a single product or manufacturing site, and there isn't much of an overarching chronology or a neat conclusion on, say, Dow's culture, or much discussion on how it compares to large corporate culture in general. The author might also have made it clearer that establishing allowable levels for chemical releases doesn't help when bioaccumulation causes the presumed-safe thresholds to be exceeded in people.

Technical editing would have helped as well. There are several typos or misspellings of chemical names, and other errors that would be caught by an editor with some knowledge of chemistry -- for example, the author at one point states, incorrectly, that acetone and benzene are chlorinated compounds. This is not good for the book's credibility. Fortunately, many of the people the author quotes are chemical or medical experts, and the quotes at least seem to be (plausibly) correct. The best parts of the book are the stories of workers or nearby residents that have been affected by Dow, and the people who have tried to solve the problems. Unfortunately, so far it seems that only threats of regulation or litigation have had much effect.

      Book Description

The first English-language publication of one of the greatest Second World War memoirs — with a new preface by Norman Davies.

Born in Vienna in 1898, Karolina Lanckoronska was an aristocrat and art historian who taught at the University of Lwow. When the Soviets came to occupy the city, Lanckoronska became active in the Polish resistance. She was arrested in 1942, imprisoned and sentenced to death before being incarcerated, first in Stanislau then in Lwow and Berlin. She was finally placed in a concentration camp in Ravensbruck.

As a Countess, Lanckoranska was subjected to varying treatment, at times suffering near starvation, only to receive extra food and medical care at other times according to the often-conflicting concerns of the authorities in Berlin. With the intervention of some influential friends, the honourable actions of one Nazi, and efforts by the Swiss scholar Carl J. Burckhardt, she was eventually released.

Throughout her imprisonment, Lanckoronska remained defiantly resilient, loyal to Poland and committed to her fellow prisoners. Her magnetic personality and superb storytelling makes this a powerful narrative and sustains our interest through harrowing reading. Hers is an extraordinary story of courage and will.

This well written book is a cliff-hanger, a tear jerker and the most frightening lesson in the behavior of supposedly civilized races.
It should be mandatory reading for all schools and universities in the free world. The bestial atrocities detailed in its pages need to be shown the light of day so that public conscience ensures that they never be repeated.
The author's incredible faith and determination shine through, as does the spirit of the Polish people.
This first hand account may be the most comprehensive and detailed ever written.

4 out of 5 stars Fate is Both Friend and Foe.......2006-10-20

On the surface, it wouldn't seem likely that an inexperienced nun and an outcast rancher would be convincing protagonists in a lesbian romance. However, the talented Helen Macpherson makes it work. She pulls the reader gently into the story until suddenly a romance between these two, seemingly different women seems both feasible and fated.

Katherine Flynn was left standing alone at the altar... a blessing in disguise because she was marrying out of duty, not for love. Out of shame, she joined a convent and married God instead. Sister Katherine is sent to serve in Australia and dives in headfirst when she first sets foot in this strange place. Her predecessor and many of the townsfolk are killed in a storm the day Katherine arrives. The priest she will be working with is out of town, so she reluctantly gives last rites to the deceased. It seems even her lodging has been destroyed by the storm so she accepts the hospitality of rancher Catriona Pelham.

Catriona Pelham, although wealthy in her own right, is looked down upon by the town's religious elite. It seems Catriona doesn't conform to their ideas regarding female behavior. The rancher wears pants, plows fields, and basically works with the men in the community. To make matters even worse, her brother was engaged to the local nun (Katherine's predecessor) and their parents are dead.

Macpherson does a wonderful job illustrating Katherine's struggle between her commitment to the church and her growing feelings for Catriona. The author brings in many supporting characters that help Katherine work through this complex situation. There are Susan and her lover who show Katherine that love between women is not wrong. There is the female leader of the bushrangers who stirs physical sensations the nun has never experienced. And, finally, there is Catriona's first (yet former) lover who shows up unexpectedly and invokes Katherine's jealous streak.

I loved the author's first book - Colder than Ice - and am certainly not disappointed with this one. There are a few minor plot elements that weren't really necessary, but overall I'd recommend `Trespass' for a great read set in late 19th Century Australia.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific drama of women set in the Australia of the 1870's.......2005-10-02

Extremely well written novel of life in a small town and the arduous circumstances that can occur both physically and emotionally. I could not put the book down once I started to skim the first chapter. The romance was simply lovely and the drama quite real. Up until the end you are not sure what the resolve will be.

The secondary characters are so intriguing that I would enjoy reading a sequel to this story involving both Susan and Me-Lin as most especially Adele.

From the publisher's website - Sister Katherine Flynn is an Irish nun, sent by her order to work in the remote Australian countryside of New South Wales. Katherine is a prideful woman who originally joined her order to escape the shame of being left at the altar. She had found herself getting married only because society dictated it for a young woman her age, and she was not exactly heartbroken when it didn?t take place. Yet, her mother could not be consoled and talked of nothing except the disgrace that she had brought to the Flynn name. So, she finds great relief in escaping the cold Victorian Ireland of 1872.

Catriona Pelham is a member of the reasonably affluent farming gentry within the district. Her relationship with the hardworking townspeople and its farmers is one of genuine and mutual respect. The town?s wealthy, however, have ostracized her due to her unorthodox ways and refusal to conform to society?s expectations of a woman of the 1870?s. Catriona finds comfort in the friendship of the townspeople and farmers, but at night she pines for the lover she lost long ago?her governess, Adele Cooper.

As a bond between Katherine and Catriona develops and so the journey begins for these two strong-willed women. For Katherine it is a journey of self-discovery and of what life holds outside the cloistered walls of the convent. For Catriona it is bittersweet, as feelings she has kept hidden for years resurface in her growing interest in Katherine.

      4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2002-01-04

I think the other reviews are fair depictions of this book -- it's long, has some good character building and is an enjoyable read. But it could have benefited from an editor's attention. In addition to the repetitive flaws that someone else wrote about, there's the element an editor should bring which is "who cares" about every secondary character and change of scene. There were one or two scenes that were just more of the same. They didn't add to character or develop the plot, instead they slowed down otherwise good pacing.

This book also has a growing pet peeve that I'm finding in a lot of books, which is referring to characters constantly by the color of their hair, their relative height or age. Once in a while it might help the plot to remind the reader who is older or taller, or to jazz up a visual with a detail about appearance. But more than that I find jarring. It's not dramatic, it's just odd. Give the readers some credit for remembering these details and stick to their names. That's why they have names.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent story.......2001-12-09

This is a well written book and features characters who are well drawn. You get a chance to see how they developed and the forces at work on them instead of the plot being hastily thrown together in an attempt to "get at the good parts". Until the end of this book, you can't be sure if this situation is going to work out for these two women or not. Both of the main characters are appealing and the kind of people that you wish really existed. Maybe they do and they're just so rare not enough people get to know their kind. If you like to read, you'll like this book. If you like a love story that doesn't jump off of the first page, but develops fully, you'll like it even more.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Story.......2001-08-21

Set in 1872, this lesbian novel is about a young Irish nun who travels to Australia, a move that ultimately changes her life.

The story basically revolves around Sister Katherine Flynn and Catriona Pelham, a young woman rancher, and the various levels their relationship goes through, with the aid of other characters adding flavor and plot twists.

While the characters and the plot are well drawn, the author could have benefited from a better editor. A good editor would have caught the author's use of repetitive phrasing. The author too often uses the phrase "shook herself out of her revelry" or "she shook her head", "shaking her head...",etc. Along with overworking the term "grazier" and "the older woman."

I do think this author shows promise and I look forward to other works by her.

        Book Description

Twenty-five years ago, a young newlywed was killed in a suburban San Francisco bank hold-up. Her murderers are never found.

          Book Description

Those Who Trespass Against Us is a vivid, disturbing look at the life and suffering of one small, orphaned, Irish boy. This is a heart-wrenching tale based on the life of Walter O'Keeffe, between, 1939-1948 in Ireland, as he struggles to survive the inhumane treatment imposed on him by those charged with his care.

This is a tragic, personal account of lost love and abuse at a time when the Irish legal system had gone mad with regard to the care of children. Through-out the book a sharp picture is painted of the horrific conditions in Ireland's Industrial Schools, in particular, Greenmont Industrial School in Cork where the Presentation Brothers starved, beat, preyed upon, and abused the children in their care.

During his years of abuse, Walter's happy memories of his early life with his parents in Polrone Ireland, and of his childhood sweetheart, Josie, provide him with hope and a place to escape the harsh realities of his dreadful existence. On May 11, 1999, the Government of Ireland apologized on behalf of the State to the victims of abuse in Ireland's industrial schools. For many, like Walter, the apology came to late, his life had already been grossly affected and negatively shaped by the horrors of being separated from his family and growing up in Greenmont.

Other stories relate the suffering of Ireland's children, and while they are all horrible, no other so brilliantly describes a personal account of the severe conditions children were exposed to during this shameful period of Irish history. Walters story also exposes the lasting impact living in these conditions continued to have on individuals' even years after they left the chambers of horrors in which they were forced to live.
