4 out of 5 stars A Good Guide to Civil War Sites.......2007-02-14

This is a good book to find Civil War sites through the US. Alice Cromie shows us where to find major sites as well as some of the little known sites. We not only read of the war itself, but the location of events leading up to the war, and locations of museums dedicated to the Civil War. If you use this book
as a tour guide, be sure to call places ahead of time, as some of these no longer exist. Over all it is a good book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion for Touring Civil War Sites.......2004-12-04

Cromie has written an excellent guide for locating Civil War-related sites in the United States.

The book is organized by state and usually contains the following information:

        1. City/town of the event or relation to the Civil War.
        2. Location and address of the site.
        3. Significance of the site or event.
        4. Date of the event.

This book is a gem because it mentions several locations that may not be known to both the Civil War novice and long-time student.

Highly recommended as an invaluable guide for your next Civil War trip, particularly to those less well-known places!

        Read and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for all civil war enthusiasts........1999-05-28

This book is an easy to follow guide to many civil war sites. Some of the places are the well known sites and some are not so well known. But, you will enjoy tracking these sites state by state. I've used the book sysytematically and when I've visited a site, I highlight in the book the place I've been on the state maps provided. Buy it! Try it! Take lots of pictures, too! Start a scrapbook of civil war sites you've visited. It makes for a great conversation piece.

Between 1865 and 1876, about two thousand blacks held elective and appointive offices in the South. A few, such as the senator from Mississippi Blanche K. Bruce, are well known, but most have languished in obscurity, omitted from official state histories. Prize-winning historian Eric Foner profiles more than 1,500 black legislators, state officials, sheriffs, justices of the peace, and constables. Essential reading for anyone interested in the scope of black achievement during Reconstruction, Freedom's Lawmakers includes biographical sketches of each officeholder (some necessarily brief because so little is known) and many photographs.

            Book Description

Freedom's Lawmakers is the first comprehensive directory of America's first generation of black public officials--those who held office during the Reconstruction era that followed the Civil War. With positions including congressman, justice of the peace, constable, and member of the legislature, the nearly 1500 officials listed here offer a panorama of the black community in all its diversity--freeborn and slave, Northern and Southern, rich and poor. The book draws on extensive research in the era's primary sources, and the voluminous literature on Reconstruction that has appeared in the past generation, providing information about the antebellum status, occupation, property ownership, military service, and other attributes of black officeholders. The concise biographies are augmented by 125 halftones, including seven composite photographs at the front of the book. In some cases, only a few pieces of information are available, but in a remarkable number of instances, the book traces the life histories of previously unknown individuals, most of them born as slaves, who played a role in America's first experiment in interracial democracy. The biographies follow many individuals into the twentieth century, illustrating the impact of these black Americans on post-Reconstruction society and the consequences for black Americans of the overthrow of Reconstruction.

This is a book accompanying a television series, so one would not expect anything very profound. The first three of the six chapters are a perfectly readable and lavishly illustrated introduction to the First Industrial Revolution, though there is only one sentence (in the sixth chapter) about Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The other three chapters, on London, medicine and weaponry seem to fit ill with the title of the book. We have something on the growth of London, but one wonders what the extensive description of pleasure gardens has to do with the Industrial Revolution. The only thing that development in medicine "did for us" is Jenner's work on vaccination. Whether that has anything to do with the Industrial Revolution is questionable, and certainly the pages on useless patent medicines and on body snatching can't be said to have done much for us. The description of weaponry (ineffectual rockets and early torpedoes, fortifications like the Martello Towers) likewise have done little for us. Unfortunately, as the note on Further Readings tells us, there seem to be very few general surveys in print of the First Industrial Revolution, but one that is recommended is Phyllis Deane's The First Industrial Revolution, and anyone seriously interested in the subject would do better to consult that work than this one, and Eric Hobsbawm's excellent Industry to Empire is not mentioned in the bibliography at all.

5 out of 5 stars Examining the Industrial Revolution's lasting impact.......2004-09-13

Between 1750 and 1840 the Industrial Revolution changed the lives of British people forever, advancing science and technological discoveries and their application to daily lives. Gavin Weightman is a noted historian and Dan Cruikshank presents the TV series on the topic: together they use the TV show as a starting point and foundation for examining the Industrial Revolution's lasting impact on modern times.
