Tahir Shah devises a get rich quick scheme which brings him to India to seek his fortune. He also has other interests namely the mysterious Gond people who may have walked the earth when the earth was one joined land mass. However this book is so much more than that. India \ Africa \ South America are all experienced and observed from a most interesting angle. The author roughs it al the way. There are many side-splitting moments in this book. There is youth and vivacity in the words that flow. Tahir Shah is clearly in love with life. Incidentally while this book is truly excellent, his latest effort "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is I believe a masterpiece. You will not be disappointed in either book.

TAHIR SHAH is without doubt the most original travel writer of his generation... never before have I been so touched by, and become so involved in, a book. I am struck dumb by Shah's genius.

            Read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most original travel writer in the last 5 years!.......1997-09-15

A fast gallop through the Indian sub-continent, Africa and South America, with a cast of eccentric characters perhaps unprecidented in modern travel writing. It put me in mind of Peter Flemming for the sheer pace and sense of adventure. Yet it was a hundred times funnier. Gives Redmond O'Hanlon a run for his money as the Number 1 funny travel writer at work today. Also, I notice it is easy to find in the UK, available in an Orion paperback, not out of print at all!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!!! THE BEST TRAVEL READ OF THE YEAR!!!.......1997-08-11

Beyond the Devil's Teeth, by Tahir Shah,is the funniest book of the year. Traces a haphazard route through India, Africa and South America, in search of GONDWANALAND. From sentece one of page one you can't put the thing down! Read it and split your sides with laughing

              5 out of 5 stars Delightful reading.......2001-10-04

This book is a delight to read, both for the breadth of events included and for the writing itself. Some events are clearly important - such as the founding of the ILGWU - others are less well-known, such as the passing of the Sheppard-Towner Act, the first federally funded health program. Ms Felder's dry wit lightens some topics, like the history of the bra and the premiere of Ozzie and Harriet, but she keeps her focus on the deeper significance. Events are chronological, so you can read straight through or browse -- and enjoy the photos and art too.

This is a truly impressive performance that synthesizes an amazing amount of information to highlight the crucial developments women made in America in the 20th century and the factors that affected not just women but all of us. Impressively researched and gracefully written, the book is a must, particularly for mothers to give their daughters and vice versa.

Well done, Ms. Felder, and keep up the good work.

              3 out of 5 stars Not great..........2007-01-22

I'm using this book in a 10th grade general global history survey course. The actual text is easy to understand, but the problem is that the writing style gives no sense of which events were extremely important and which ones were less so, instead putting them all in the same long, boring paragraphs. Also, I'm no grammar expert, but I feel like it's very badly proofread and there are awkward phrasings/typos. It does include all the information though, so if used alongside a book of promary sources it would probably be okay. My teacher decided to use it for the information on Japan, but instead of the WW II section, we used Brinton's "A History of Civilization", which does a much better job of presenting the causes/events leading up to the war.

As a minister, I often use this work to write embellished obituaries highlighting the main evnets in a persons life when I conduct a funeral(e.g., "...when John Smith was born in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed into law...while Al Jolson's new hit, "You Made Me Love You" topped the charts...")

This volume can be useful to writers seeking to set a tone, historians, or those interested in popular culture or gaining a perspective of America's changing times.

It is definitely a reference book, interesting to thumb through, but not a book for standard reading.

This is a rich compilation of photographs, essays, and timelines, breaking the 20th century up into decade-long sections such as "The Age of Big Business" (1900 to 1909) and "Challenging the Establishment" (1960 to 1969). A number of respected scholars (including what feels like the entire Yale history department) have produced the historical essays, while National Geographic experts deliver articles on topics such as "Adventure and Exploration," "Mapping Our World," and "Earth's Forces." The brief items in the timeline section try to maintain a balance between "history" and "popular culture"; thus, 1969's articles include information on Chappaquiddick, the Manson family, Northern Ireland, Woodstock, and Joe Namath.

              Book Description

At the threshold of a new millennium, we look back on an extraordinary century, the most momentous and eventful in the history of humankind. In a hundred years that encompass both astonishing achievements and unparalleled horrors, the world has seen the greatest scientific triumphs ever imagined and the two most destructive wars ever fought. At the dawn of the 20th century, powered flight was a visionary dream. A mere seven decades later, American astronauts stood on the moon and gazed back at Earth. As old empires, fell, new superpowers arose to take their place. As new discoveries vastly increased our store of knowledge, new technologies shrank the globe and accelerated the pace of life. And as era succeeded era. National Geographic was there to chronicle our ever changing world.

Highlighted by 600 dramatic photographs and illustrations, this lavish and fascinating volume captures all the amazing variety of the 20th-century experience. Decade by decade, it presents the main themes and monumental events that transformed whole civilizations as well as the colorful details that shaped our daily lives. Here are authoritative essays on historical and cultural trends that reflect the moods and concerns of each decade, from America's arrival on the world stage at the start of the century to the increasing globalization that marks its end. Here too are year-by-year sidebars on important developments and personages, a yearly time line of modern milestones, and features on the subjects of special interest to generations of National Geographic readers. Along with these serious and informative sections, there's a treasury of delightful trivia and lighthearted lists of the people, the songs, the movies, and the accomplishments that gave each decade its unique flavor, from the first Teddy bear to the last episode of Seinfeld, from Kitty Hawk to Cape Kennedy, from Marconi to Microsoft and beyond.

This wonderful, wide-ranging portrait is colorful, comprehensive, compelling, entertaining, and utterly engrossing -- in short, a perfect mirror of the varied, vivid, vital century that it celebrates.

              4 out of 5 stars good summary.......2003-07-17

Eyewitness to the 20th century is of typical National Geographic high quality. Each decade consists of one chapter. Each chapter egins with a summary of the decade. Each year is given a two page summary that highlights many of the trends and events of the year. At the bottom of the page there is a timeline that lists specific dates of important events that has happened during the year. In general, this book is a good summary of the past century and the major events.

4 out of 5 stars A must for workplace trivia.......2000-05-11

This book is loaded with all things I should have already known, or better yet, learned in high school and promptly forgot. It is well laid out with a summary of the decade, then quick yearly details in easy-to-read and interesting short paragraphs. It's the essential handbook for all of us who want a foundation in history, but don't care enough to buy an entire book on every subject or person of interest.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview!.......2000-01-28

Out of all the books outlining the events that shaped the twentieth century, I found this to be the most enjoyable and informative. Set up in an accessible, easy to read format, it details the major historical events of the past century, providing entertainment and education along the way.

5 out of 5 stars The best century in review book I've found.......1999-12-02

I have found this book superior to those by Time, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. I especially like the year by year layout w/timeline that includes both hard data and trends & trivia of the period. You'll find it hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Good review of the Century.......1999-08-13

While not a comprehensive account of the entire century there is enough here to get a good idea of what happened, who it happened to and why it happened. All things considered this a good buy that can be used as a launching pad for further research about any particular event in any year. It will point you in the right direction.

                Book Description

Albania in the Twentieth Century: A History represents an unparalleled achievement in scholarship on Albania. Owen Pearson presents a complete account of the twentieth century in Albania, from its breakaway from the Ottoman Empire in 1908 to the Kosova War in 1999. In fascinating detail, Pearson chronicles the monarchy of King Zog and the wartime period where Albania became a battleground for the Greek, Italian and German armies. He describes Enver Hoxha's seizure of power, the country's fraught relationship with the post-Stalin Soviet Union and Maoist China's fraternal embrace of Albania, all leading to near-total isolationism and inevitable economic collapse. Pearson concludes with the genocide of Kosovar Albanians at the hands of the Serbian regime of Milosevic that characterised the last decade of twentieth century Albania. Comprising original research, and excerpts from rare Albanian sources, this is a compendium of primary source material that provides a year-by-year and sometimes day-by-day account of Albania's modern history. It is an essential reference for all those interested in Albanian Balkan and Eastern European history.nbsp;I.B.Tauris in association with the Center for Albanian Studies.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine masterpiece of Albanian history in English!.......2006-02-22

This is no doubt the first concise and complete history of the modern Albanian state ever published in English. The book's structure is in chronological order of events following the years of independence to the consolidation of the Albania state and Albanian Monarchy. Mr. Pearson gives a realistic and vivid depiction of Albanian political personalities of the time and the overall political environment. The book is objective and free of any domestic or international political biases, which is difficult to maintain given the regions turbulent past - the author should be complimented on his efforts in this aspect. Anyone interested in Albanian studies, Balkan or Eastern European history should own this book! I highly recommend it!

                  Book Description

Neil Armstrong walks on the moon. The stock market crashes in 1929. Roger Bannister runs the first four-minute mile. John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas. The twentieth century has been filled with remarkable events--some awe-inspiring, some tragic. Now, the most important happenings of
the last century have been collected in one attractive and authoritative volume.
Events: A Chronicle of the Twentieth Century is a unique year-by-year survey of events from 1900 through 1991. Profusely illustrated with vivid photographs of key news stories, this comprehensive reference covers each year with a two-page spread containing the essential chronology of political,
social, cultural, and scientific history from around the globe. A brief introduction treats the major stories of the year, and the remainder of the spread contains approximately 100 news items, handsomely presented and listed in chronological order by topic. Two indices--one of important figures,
the other of events and places--ensure easy access for those seeking out specific details. But editor Philip L. Cottrell has also designed the book for browsing, allowing the reader to discover previously unknown events, or to glean a sense of the character of a specific year.
Whether it is the outbreak of a war, the death of a statesman, a great moment in the world of sports, or the newest teenage fad or craze, this volume is an indispensable resource for answering all those questions of "who," "when," "where," and "how many" of twentieth-century history.
