Book Description
The daring escapes that have captivated our imagination in fiction, television, and movies pale in comparison to the real-life exploits described in Great Escapes and Rescues. From the slave revolt led by Spartacus in the first century B.C.E. to the recent Peruvian Embssy siege, each story in this entertaining and informative resource serves as a tribute to the ingenuity, perseverance, courage, and indomitable will of those who fled or were rescued from dangerous political, religious, or social circumstances. The entries, many of which are illustrated, also include suggestions for further reading.
Coverage includes:
* The escape of Mohammed, the founder of Islam, from his enemies in 622 A.D.
* Jacques Casanova who fled from an "escape-proof" prison in 1755, only to hide out in the house of a local police official who was searching for him
* Union prisoners who escaped their Confederate captors when a ventriloquist among them made a corpse "protest" his burial
* Members of the Danish underground who smuggled more than 8,000 Jews into Sweden in 1943
* The 1973 attempt made by Israeli commandos to free fellow nationals being held hostage in Entebbe, Uganda.
Book Description
This book explores the dynamic interaction between economic life, society and civilisation in the regions around and beyond the Indian Ocean during the period from the rise of Islam to 1750. Within a distinctive theory of comparative history, Professor Chaudhuri analyses how the identity of different Asian civilisations was established. He examines the structural features of food habits, clothing, architectural styles and housing; the different modes of economic production; and the role of crop raising, pastoral nomadism, and industrial activities for the main regions of the Indian Ocean. In an original and perceptive conclusion, the author demonstrates how Indian Ocean societies were united or separated from one another by a conscious cultural and linguistic identity. However, there was a deeper structure of unities created by a common ecology, technology, technology of economic production, traditions of government, theory of political obligations and rights, and a shared historical experience. His theory enables the author to show that the real Indian Ocean was an area that extended historically from the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf to the sea which lies beyond Japan.

Asia Before Europe.......2001-07-25
K.N. Chadhuri is an economic historian whose "Asia Before Europe: Economy and Civisation of the Indian Ocean from the Rise of Islam to 1750" is a 434 page detailed study of the Indian Ocean trading network during the millenium preceding its fall under European hegemony. It further develops the thesis he first presented in his 1985 book, "Trade and Civilisation in the Indian Ocean from the Rise of Islam to 1750." In that earlier work he presents the argument that "Asia" is a word of European origin with little real meaning other than tthat it refers to the non-European part of the vast Eurasian landmass and that the Indian Ocean basin is the real unifier and transmitter of cultural exchange and integration. In this work he refers to Fernand Braudel's work on the Mediterranean basin economy and Chaudhuri extends that methodology to the Indian Ocean. Just as Braudel insisted that the Mediterranean economy extended to, influenced, and even included subsidiary areas as far north as the Baltic and as far south as the saharan Sahel; Chaudhuri includes the economies of East Africa (inadequately treated), the East Indies, Malaya (Malacca), and the subcontinent, but he does not stop there. He insists that the "isthmus" of the Middle East, South China and even the Silk Road and North China are as related to the Indian Ocean as the Braudel's Baltic was to the Mediterranean. He then discusses in some detail the societies, clothing, agriculture, nomadism, industry, and urban areas; devoting a full chapter to each. He discusses the uniqueness of each area and the exchanges with copious use of primary sources. All this is done to prove that the Indian Ocean economy was dependent upon the tacit cooperation of Dar al-Islam and the Hindu and Buddhist states; and that commerce was the driving force that made the local economies prosperous, expansive and efficiently developing. He posits that the European incursion stifled this exchange and Europe's disruption, ignorance and violent arrogance made the basin prone to conquest. He concludes that European hegemony resulted in the area's relative poverty.

Customer Reviews:
Not everyone is so smart.......2007-04-05
For a start, when I look for a textbook, I'd like to learn both the theory and the application. I'd like to know how to apply what I learn to a real life setting - which I believe is the sole purpose of any textbook.
Terry Sturm's book fulfills the first part very well - his theorectical overview and insights into open channel flow equations is fantastical. We have integrations, advanced formulae, control volume diagrams and definition of equations. Linear momentum, vector sum of forces blah blah blah.
What we don't have however, are explanations what everything means (which I suspect is left up to the Professor of the Day). It's just regurgitated facts. After then end of an oversaturated chapter, guess what. You don't get examples, instead you get a whole set of problems (with no solutions) - which you are expected to solve by deriving some other equation from the already extensive list of textbook equations. Make sense? I think not.
That unless you come into the field of open channel hydraulics with a foreknowledge of fundamentals, don't expect anything to make any sense. That plus the outrageous price of the book makes me want to return this.
excellent experience.......2005-09-06
Received the book that i bought in 1.5 weeks and with no hassels.
very helpful.......2004-02-16
In a world where engineering texts burn one's eyes like a Saharan sandstorm, Sturm's Open Channel Hydraulics provides rivers of soothing relief. Concise, to the point, and utterly compelling, it stands as a towering example of an engineer in full command of his prodigous talent. Read it and be powerfully enlightened.
Diagrams Please!.......2003-12-22
The text was ok except for the fact that the chapter problems did not include any illustrations. A lot of time the students had to guess at exactly what Sturm meant. Towards the end of the course it became routine for us to work the problem first and then check in the teacher's key to make sure that we set it up the way Sturm meant for us to. The class was made of seniors and graduate students.
Another problem is that often the student had to infer how Sturm wanted the reader to use the numerous charts based on empirical data. Sturm wasn't always explicit and that caused problems in getting correct values off them.
To be fair, this is a first edition and there are bound to be errors. Hopefully, the next edition is better. My professor loved this book stating that "Sturm gets to the point." He used Chow and Henderson's texts to supplement this book which helped a lot. There were computer programs and examples of their use in the book which I enjoyed and will prove useful to me in the future.
Dam Good.......2001-03-11
This is a dam good book. For those aficionados of hydraulics (such as myself), this book is liberating. Masterful work!

By two expert and licensed wildlife rehabilitators.......2004-01-13
Now in its third and updated edition, Wildlife Care For Birds And Mammals is a straightforward, how-to manual to care for and assist injured wild animals, written and presented by two expert and licensed wildlife rehabilitators, Dale Carlson and Irene Ruth. Direct and to-the-point instructions, enhanced with black-and-white illustrations by Hope M. Douglas, showing the reader just what to do to help baby ducks, birds, opossums, rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels that are lost, injured, attacked by pets or otherwise in trouble. From treating wounds to care and feeding and procedures for release, Wildlife Care For Birds And Mammals is a very highly recommended and thoroughly "user friendly" guide.
Price Does Not Fit the Quality.......2000-08-29
Informative but rather elementary. I was disappointed with theamount of information and quality of the actual book itself. ...product doesnt fit the price.

Electric Power Industry in Nontechnical Language
ASIN: 0878147667 |
Customer Reviews:
By 2004, its too dated to be much use.......2004-03-10
While one of the few books on this intriguing topic, "Merchant Power: A Basic Guide" is by now so dated as to be practically useless. As I see it, its only real use now is as an artifact documenting the unchecked optimism over merchant power generation that arose during the 1990s. For readers in 2004 and beyond, history shows that much of these assumptions and analysis were misguided and/or just plain wrong. It is almost comic to be told, in 2004, that "the merchant phenomenon will likely be a dying fad in certain countries, as all power plants will represent 'merchant' capacity." Not this decade, anyway...
Aside from its use of now dated facts and assumptions, the book is not terribly well organized or written. While a "Basic Guide" might be expected to cover "the basics," this book is more of an arguement for the validity of the industry and its growth potential than an explanation of what it actually is. It is also filled with now useless facts and figures about current and "future" power generation capacity and prices. By the second paragraph of the book, no less, the author has already embarked on an analysis of state-by-state power price variations for industrial consumers (complete with map). Of its 220 pages, no less than 80 are devoted to an appendix, glossary and index, including an exhaustive list of new generation projects recently (as of 1997) completed or underway.
In sum, if you want "A basic guide" to the merchant power industry, this is not it. Sorry....
Decent Introduction to a Rising Industry.......2000-07-30
This is a mostly interesting summary presentation of the basics of merchant power plants (which are plants whose electricity production is not tied to long-term sales agreements). Not as carefully written or well organized as her book Natural Gas and Electric Power in Non-Technical Language, the sloppy editing here (e.g., multiple repeated sections, an inability to distinguish dashes from hyphens) will by itself make you resent how much you paid for this book. Pennwell and Chambers, an editor of some respected industry rags, can put out far better than this. Not to say you won't learn something new if this is your first look at the subject. Basic issues (e.g., deregulation, convergence of natural gas and electric power industries, stranded cost, the NERC regions) are covered, occasionally with the flair that Chambers is entirely capable of. The chapter (4) covering financing issues seemed particularly complete and well written -- as was the first part of the chapter (5) on California's certification and permitting process. There are lengthy sections devoted to specific project descriptions and specifications. These would have been much more helpful if they had been offered as specific illustrations of broader development principles or industry trends. A reader desiring a quick introduction to the merchant power phenomenon will absolutely find this (expensive) book useful, but it appears to have been too hastily thrown together to be an outstanding effort.
