The 15th and 16th centuries marked a turning point for Western culture--when "civilization progressed from monochrome to technicolour," as Oxford historian Dr. David Rundle puts it. He should know, having amassed the collected wisdom of the cream of the scholarly crop, in The Hutchinson Encyclopedia of the Renaissance. Over 1,500 entries comprising artistic, political, and religious figures and events fill the book, aiding the researcher and rewarding the casual browser with descriptions and histories of the whirlwind of novelties that sped through this period.
Gorgeous photographs of some of the greatest Renaissance paintings, sculpture, and architecture (including 29 color plates) from famous artists such as Fra Angelico and more obscure folks such as François Clouet accentuate the entries and inspire further reading. The book is extensively cross-indexed; this period marks the first intensive long-distance cultural communication since the fall of the Roman Empire, so the cross-links are important and complex. Maps, genealogical charts, and timetables complete the presentations, providing visual insight into this turbulent world. The Hutchinson Encyclopedia of the Renaissance gives the reader a new perspective on the pioneers of our now thoroughly explored cultural territory and may just provide a map of what lies ahead. --Rob Lightner

Book Description
A two-volume work covering an extraordinary period in the history of art that produced some of the most famous artists of all time, including Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
Beginning with transitional Late Gothic artists such as Giotto, the biographies in The Encyclopedia of Italian Renaissance and Mannerist Art trace the evolution of the new modes of artistic expression, from scientific naturalism and the development of linear perspective to the exploration of new
secular themes derived from Classical literature and mythology.
All three phases of Renaissance art are covers: early, high, and late (the latter period also known as Mannerist). Besides biographies on all types of artists, from [painters, illuminators, sculptors, and architects to printmakers and maiolica designers, patrons, and collectors, there are entries
on styles, important art forms, cities, and in-depth surveys of all the fine and decorative art forms in Italy during the Renaissance and Mannerist periods.

Can't believe I'm the first to review this..........2007-04-28
I'm absolutely, positively NOT an expert on this topic. I'm interested in the topic for its own sake, and I'm also interested in cultural and environmental factors that foster creativity. I have kept this book in my car for the last couple weeks, and I find myself reading a passage or two here and there. I've been reading it along with Abdul-Jabbar's recent book. There are quite a few books out there on the Harlem Renaissance, and the last 100 years of African-American history. I'm not familiar with most of them.
Here's why I loved THIS book.
The writing is superb. The passages are about 1-4 pages each, and they confront the reader with the snap, crackle and pop of concise, crisp journalistic prose. The authors have a knack for deepening knowledge while causing the reader to want to know even more about the topic. The portraits tend to be descriptive without being judgmental, which adds credibility to the passages and force to the general topic. At the same time, the authors seem psychologically savvy, providing internally consistent life histories in many instances. There's a phenomenal amount of information here about remarkable people and places. The scholarship appears to be quite good, with helpful references following each passage.
This review is a work in progress, so stay tuned.

Book Description
The Middle Ages as they were lived in Eastern Europe are covered in this encyclopedia. An introduction provides an overview of the Byzantine Empirewhat life was like, what people wore and ate, how families were formed and cared for, and how the so-called Eastern Empire differed from its Western counterpart.
Over 1500 entries, from Adrianopolis to Zoë, embrace a broad range of topics. Illustrations include genealogies of Byzantine rulers, maps of the Empire at various stages, and photographs of Byzantine buildings and art. A pronunciation guide, a note about transliteration and spelling, a chronology of emperors, a glossary, a suggested readings list, and an index are also included.

Not recommended.......2004-08-24
I was prepared to like this book, as it has a nice look and feel--physically well-constructed with easy to read print arranged in two columns. However, as soon as I started reading, I encountered problems. The maps referred to in the book description are in fact only two--one of the Empire around 1025 and other around 1350. Both maps are very sketchy--only two cities are named on each, Constantinople and Venice. Then we consider the heart of the book, the entries. The Czech Republic is said to be part of the Balkan Peninsula under that entry. Under the entry for the themes, no mention is made of when the themes were initially founded or by whom; Heraclius is said to have founded them under his entry, but there is no cross reference to him under the themes entry. The entry for Belisarius implies he was in Italy continuously until 548 after first going. In his entry, Justinian is stated to have attacked the Visigoths in Spain in the 540s rather than the correct 550s. Most of the entry for Tripoli concerns the city of that name in Lebanon, but it is also stated that this city "was an important part of the trade route through the Sahara", a statement that seems more appropriate for the city of Tripoli in Libya. There is a somewhat detailed entry on Bohemia; I'm not sure why this is so in a book on Byzantium. On the plus side, there are many charts and tables and an extensive bibliography, plus some black-and-white photographs. But in my opinion the book contains too many misleading statements to be of much use either to a specialist or a casual reader. I still give the book two stars as it does in fact have a nice look and feel.

Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, Third Edition
ASIN: 0521449537 |
Book Description
This third edition of the principal text on the finite element method for electrical engineers and electronics specialists presents the method in a mathematically undemanding style, accessible to undergraduates who may be encountering it for the first time. Like the earlier editions, it begins by deriving finite elements for the simplest familiar potential fields, and then formulates finite elements for a wide range of applied electromagnetics problems. These include wave propagation, diffusion, and static fields; open-boundary problems and nonlinear materials; axisymmetric, planar and fully three-dimensional geometries; and scalar and vector fields. A wide selection of demonstration programs allows the reader to follow the practical use of the methods. Besides providing all that is needed for the beginning undergraduate student, this textbook is also a valuable reference text for professional engineers and research students.

Removal of the section on waveguide discontinuity analysis.......2000-01-09
The third edition of FINITE ELEMENTS FOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS by Silvester & Ferrari is an excellent book. However, I am quite disappointed with the removal of the section on scattering matrix calculation and waveguide discontinuity analysis which existed (Ch.9, section 4) in the second edition of the book.

Book Description
Designed for undergraduates, graduates and practicing engineers, this text provides an up-to-date overview of numerical field computational methods and, in particular, of the finite element method (FEM) in magnetics. Particular attention is paid to the practical use of the FEM in designing electromagnetic devices such as motors, transformers and actuators.
The book is based on the authors' extensive experience teaching numerical techniques to students and design engineers from industry and is ideal for use by anyone who wishes to learn fundamentals and immediately apply these to actual design problems.
Book Description
A systematic treatment of the finite element method
"Anyone interested in the state of the art in finite element formulations will find this book an interesting read. In particular, I would strongly recommend it to those members of the electromagnetic community who are involved in high-frequency applications."
-Measurement Science and Technology
The finite element method is one of the preeminent simulation techniques for obtaining solutions to boundary-value problems in mathematical physics. It has applications in a variety of engineering and scientific studies, such as antennas, radar, microwave engineering, high-speed/high-frequency circuits, wireless communication, electro-optical engineering, remote sensing, bioelectromagnetics, and geoelectromagnetics. This Second Edition of an essential text teaches the finite element method for electromagnetic analysis. It offers engineers a methodical way to quickly master this very powerful technique for solving practical, often complicated, engineering problems.
This book provides the first systematic treatment of this numerical analysis technique for electromagnetics, including a brief overview of the two classic methods-the Ritz variational method and Galerkin's method-which form the foundation of the finite element function. Employing an example to introduce the concept of the finite element method and describe the essential steps of the technique, the author lays the groundwork for a broad-based understanding of the finite element method's usefulness. He completes his coverage by describing the finite element analysis of one-, two-, and three-dimensional problems, developing for each problem a rigorous finite element solution in general form from which solutions to specific problems can be deduced.
Carefully updated to include the most recent developments, the Second Edition now includes new coverage of:
* Absorbing boundary conditions
* A hybrid technique for pen-region scattering and radiation problems
* Eigenfunction expansions on elliptical boundaries
* Time-domain analysis of transient electromagnetic problems
* The method of moments and its fast solvers
Customer Reviews:
Great Book on the Finite Element Method for EM.......2007-03-28
I use commercial simulation tools and have had an introductory computational EM course, but I am not a numerical EM expert. This is a well-written book with a logical and precise presentation. There are two other books on this topic that I have studied. In comparison to the book by Volakis et al, the initial development here is more formal and clear. Sadiku's book covers many more methods than the finite element method and is difficult to compare because of that reason.
The most comprehensive and up-to-date FEM book in EM.......2002-08-29
The book covers all the basic theory of FEM in electromagnetics, which is perfect for those beginners in FEM. The book also has lots of materials on the most recent developments such as hybrid techniques, method of moments and its fast solver, etc. So it is very good choice for researchers in the area of computational electromagnetics. Nicely written and easy to read. If you want to know anythhing about FEM in EM, this is the book. Go for it.
ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WORKS IN FINITE ELEMENT METHOD.......2002-07-08
Enrichs the first edition by the latest development in the finite element method in electromagnetics. Documents for the first time higher-order vector finite elements, perfectly matched layer as the absorbing boundary condition, hybrid finite-element and asymptotic methods, advanced finite-element boundary-integral method in conjunction with the fast integral solvers such as FMM, and finite element method in time domain. A state-of-the-art as well as a systematic treatment of finite element method. Though the complexity in nature, the author's writing is so good that one could have a hard time in putting it down once he opened it. None of the finite element books ever published in electromagnetics can be its parallel in depth, completeness, and reader-friendliness. If you are a beginner who wants to learn finite element method, this book is the choice. If you are an expertise who wants to know more about finite element method, so it is.
Excellent Finite Element book for Electrical Engineers........1998-12-02
A good book for learning about Finite Element methods for electrical engineers. The emphasis is on electromagentics and the author develops FEM from first principles. Numerous examples supplement the theory and show the power and utility of FEM.

Book Description
Written by specialists of modeling in electromagnetism, this resource provides a comprehensive review of the finite element method for low frequency applications. The fundamentals of this method and latest advances in the field are described in detail through topics such as macroscopic behavior laws of materials, magneto-thermal coupling for induction heating, and how Maxwell equations are derived from thermodynamic principles.
Book Description
Most large herbivores require some type of management within their habitats. Some populations of large herbivores are at the brink of extinction, some are under discussion for reintroduction, whilst others already occur in dense populations causing conflicts with other land use. Large herbivores are the major drivers for forming the shape and function of terrestrial ecosystems. This book addresses the scientifically based action plans to manage both the large herbivore populations and their habitats worldwide. It covers the processes by which large herbivores not only affect their environment (e.g. grazing) but are affected by it (e.g. nutrient cycling) and the management strategies required. Also discussed are new modeling techniques, which help assess integration processes in a landscape context, as well as assessing the consequences of new developments in the processes of conservation. This book will be essential reading for all involved in the management of both large herbivores and natural resources.
