5 out of 5 stars Venerable of the early west.......2004-10-14

This is actually two writings in one.
The first, "A Day with the Cow Column", is an abbreviated but classical description of a typical day along the emigrant trail with cattle in 1843, by Jesse Applegate. A must read for insight into trail life.
The second writing is a reminesce by Jesse's nephew Jesse A. Applegate some sixty plus years later. Young Jesse was only six and a half years old when undertaking this 1843 pilgrimage and his recollections are persuasive and touching. He recalls such occurrences as to geographical places they visited; descriptions and experiences with Indians; "buffalo chip" collecting; dogs chasing antelope; river fordings; crossing the prairies and sage plains; buffalo; games and mischief of young boys; etc.
Also included are his recollections of the perilous floating of the Columbia River where he lost a brother and cousin to drownings; the first year in Oregon with frugal provisions; the blazing of the Applegate Cutoff to allow emigrants a more efficient means of entering Oregon; etc.
      An absorbing read.

5 out of 5 stars This is an informative look at life on the Oregon Trail........1998-11-12

This book is a personal reminiscence of the first organized wagon train to follow the Oregon Trail. The author recalls his experiences as a young boy in 1843, traveling west with his family. I found this to be extremely informative and filled with personal anecdotes. Jesse Applegate's story is told from a boy's perspective and is wonderfully expressive. You will read about adventures and activities that usually don't make it into standard histories. Most memorable was the evocation of the hardship and suffering of these early pioneers. When these people reached the Oregon Territory there were no stores - they lived hand-to-mouth for a long time. But I also found Jesse's happy memories of his interaction with Native Peoples to be very enlightening, again from a boy's perspective as he explored the nearby woods and hills. All in all, a wonderful account, full of surprising and unique memories and events.

        Book Description

With more than 40,000 registered members, the Lumbee Indians are the ninth largest tribe in the United States and the largest east of the Mississippi River. Yet, despite the tribe's size, the Lumbee lack full federal recognition and their history has been marked by a struggle to articulate an Indian identity against the imposition of non-native definitions of Indianness. Gerald Sider explores the complexities of Lumbee tribal identity, focusing on the tribe's socioeconomic and political history from the 1960s through the 1980s and working back to the colonial roots of present issues and questions, including the relationship between the Lumbee and Tuscarora people of Robeson County, North Carolina.

In an extensive preface to this new edition, Sider carries the story forward from the 1980s to the present. Today, both the Lumbee and the reinvigorated Tuscarora are witnessing a major cultural resurgence. At the same time, they are becoming much more dependent upon government programs for their well-being, and socioeconomic inequality among native people is deepening. This new edition explores changing patterns of daily life for native people, their changing relations to social and governmental institutions, and the new tribal institutions that are taking shape in the face of current challenges.

4 out of 5 stars Best book on the topic, but not perfect........2004-08-20

This is the most complete history of the Lumbees to date, but still lacking. Sider is very insightful, but utterly incompetent at organizing his thoughts. The book is a string of fascinating nuggets strung together in almost random fashion. Sider understands that peoplehood is socially constructed, and analyzes the Lumbee ethnogenesis of the late 19th century very well. But the book also lapses into a primordialist "blood essentialism" at times. Sider assumes that because the Lumbees are Indians today that they have always been so. Sider did little primary historical research, and utterly failed to come to grips with Paul Heinegg's comprehensive genealogical account of the Lumbee origins and migrations as a free mulatto population coming down from Virginia. Lumbee scholarship in general tends to recycle the same few dubious 19th century sources endlessly. Sider rarely moves out of this mode, but his is definitely the most insightful analysis in print to date.

2 out of 5 stars far too convoluted.......2004-01-14

I recently ordered and read this book and found it quite convoluted and awkwardly written. Besides being very unorganized (quite a bit of jumping around chronologically), the book is overly verbose. Consider the following quote- this is verbatim:

" We have seen, particularly in the discussion of the colonial encounters, that process of domination and the use of native peoples developed, elaborated, and embellished a wide range of differences between native and colonial societies and between increasingly divergent kinds of societies. We have slso seen the multiple ways that such differences are appropriated-- how the dominant society sought to incorporate this emergent differentiation into its own political and economic schemes, using it and destroying it at the same time;and how native peoples sought to use and develop, in their own ways and for their own purposes, this same emergent differentiation- in opposition, in conclusion, in alliances of many diverse kinds and in assault: in multiple ways that were necessarily fluid, and necessarily associated with intensifying and changing internal antagonisms and alliances."

        What?
This quote is typical of the type of writing found in the book. It is highly unreadable, and focuses mainly on the social and economic aspects of the Lumbee people, as opposed to their history. Those seeking to learn about the Lumbee have better books to choose from.

2 out of 5 stars Beyond Robeson County Lives Other Tuscarora.......2004-01-05

40,000 plus Lumbees = how many Tuscaroras?

It's important to note Once Upon A Time in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's that some of the good folks claiming Lumbee Pride in the Lumberton-Pembroke-Maxton (Robeson County) native circles today did not wish to be "cast" as Lumbee back then. (It's confusing to me on many levels why the going back and forth keeps going on in Robeson County.)

BEING INDIAN IS NOT A CHOICE. It certainly is not a Free-Will choice.

BEING INDIAN is predetermined by our Creator.

Is BEING Lumbee or Tuscarora a choice?

        (Being a professional anthropologist..archaeologist...is a choice.)

Some Lumbee wanted to be "known" as Tuscarora-Skarure when it was "unpopular" to be "cast" as Lumbee.

I was taught by some of my relations (elders) some of the Lumbee (Tuscarora) did not want to be called Lumbee because they had hopes of someday becoming federally recognized.

From what I now can gather it seems for appearances sake... it so appears the MANMADE standards for establishing federal recognition criteria for the Lumbee would place some Lumbee out of the Federal Hoop not only because of the distinct language issue(s) but also because of the mixed bloodlines. Is this true?

        What exactly is a Lumbee?

What exactly is a Tuscarora? (Let's try and read between the lines of this book.)

How many face to face interviews actually took place with Tuscaroras not living in Robeson County prior to writing this book?

How many Tuscarora families were cited in this book born in eastern O-neh-weh-yuh-ka (NC) in the vicinity of where the Tuscarora War of 1711-13 was fought?

Not all Tuscarora women, children, elders chose never to leave the banks of the Neuse River of eastern North Carolina and start a slow migration towards the North later to join the Iroquois Confederacy after losing the Tuscarora War of 1711-13 NOR did they choose to relocate to the Indian Woods Reservation in Bertie County or relocate to Robeson.

        Yah kwen heh!

        Book Description

Almost every scientist has heard of catastrophe theory and knows that there has been a considerable amount of controversy surrounding it. Yet comparatively few know anything more about it than they may have read in an article written for the general public. The aim of this book is to make it possible for anyone with a comparatively modest background in mathematics - no more than is usually included in a first year university course for students not specialising in the subject - to understand the theory well enough to follow the arguments in papers in which it is used and, if the occasion arises, to use it. Over half the book is devoted to applications, partly because it is not possible yet for the mathematician applying catastrophe theory to separate the analysis from the original problem. Most of these examples are drawn from the biological sciences, partly because they are more easily understandable and partly because they give a better illustration of the distinctive nature of catastrophe theory. This controversial and intriguing book will find applications as a text and guide to theoretical biologists, and scientists generally who wish to learn more of a novel theory.

        4 out of 5 stars A concise intro.......2002-11-16

This is a concise intro to catastrophe theory that is aimed mainly at undergrad level folks, or those who are looking for a streamlined version of Rene Thom's groundbreaking _Structural Stability and Morphogenesis_.

Most terms and concepts are explained adequately. The text is essentially a narrative for the algebra and differential equations that comprise the primary explanatory mechanism of the book. There is far less reliance on topology in this book than Thom's, and it tends to appear mainly in the things like the visualization of the obligatory seven elementary catastrophe types.

The applications given are intended to be fairly simple to understand (in keeping with the lack of specialization of the intended audience), so they are fine for an intro book, but I would tend to call them only "examples" rather than "applications".

I contrast this book with Thom's by saying that this intro book will give you the mechanics of catastrophe theory and some examples, whereas Thom's book paints a much broader conceptual picture with many profound speculations on the applications of catastrophe theory. Both books have their respective value and I feel they are good complements to each other to the newcomer to catastrophe theory.

          Book Description

Chaos and catastrophe theories have become one of the major frontiers in the social sciences. Brown helps to clarify this complex new technique for modeling by approaching it with the following questions: What is Chaos? How can it be measured? How are the models estimated? What is catastrophe? How is it modeled? Beginning with an explanation of the differences between deterministic and probabilistic models, Brown introduces the reader to chaotic dynamics. Other topics covered are finding settings in which chaos can be measured, estimating chaos using nonlinear least squares, and specifying catastrophe models. Finally, the author estimates a nonlinear system of equations that models catastrophe using real survey data. Researchers wanting to understand and make use of this exciting new direction in social measurement and modeling will find this book an excellent and cogent introduction.

          Book Description

Whether talking about steering a wheelbarrow over rugged terrain or plotting the course of international relations, human performance systems involve change. Sometimes changes are subtle or evolutionary, sometimes they are catastrophic or revolutionary, and sometimes the changes are from periods of relative calm to periods of vibrant oscillations to periods of chaos. As a general rule, more complex systems are likely to produce more complex forms of change. br br Although social scientists have long acknowledged that change occurs and have considered ways to effect desirable change, the dynamical processes of change have been poorly understood in the past. This volume combines recent advances in mathematics and experimental design with the best available social science theories to produce a new, integrated, and compact theory of work, organizations, and social evolution. The domains of application extend from human decision-making processes to personnel selection and work motivation, work performance under conditions of stress, accident and health risk analysis, the development of social institutions and economic systems, creativity and innovation, organizational development and group dynamics, and political revolutions and war. br br Relative to other literature on nonlinear dynamical systems theory (NDS), this book is unique in that it integrates new developments in NDS with substantive psychological theory. It builds on many recent developments in organizational theory to show that nonlinear dynamics were often implicit in those works all along. The result is an entirely new way of viewing social events, understanding change processes, and asking questions about social systems. This book also contains much new empirical work and explains the newly developed methods for testing these new hypotheses. br

Topics covered in this work, apart from the core mathematical theories, are centered around catastrophe and chaos theory applications to human problems in industry since 1980. The author provides a highly sophisticated discussion of such subjects as decision making, the dynamics of motivation and conflict, stress and performance, and the evolution of human systems. Excellent references. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

From Catastrophe to Chaos: A General Theory of Economic Discontinuities presents and unusual perspective on economics and economic analysis. Current economic theory largely depends upon assuming that the world is fundamentally continuous. However, an increasing amount of economic research has been done using approaches that allow for discontinuities such as catastrophe theory, chaos theory, synergetics, and fractal geometry. The spread of such approaches across a variety of disciplines of thought has constituted a virtual intellectual revolution in recent years. This book reviews the applications of these approaches in various subdisciplines of economics and draws upon past economic thinkers to develop an integrated view of economics as a whole from the perspective of inherent discontinuity.

This important book introduces perturbation and qualitative methods for differential equations in terms understandable to students with only a basic knowledge of calculus and ordinary linear differential equations. Theorems are stated clearly with their limitations and restrictions and are applied to solve examples from various disciplines. The writing style is informal and new ideas are introduced gradually via concepts already familiar to the reader.
