Book Description
The American Settlement Movement was an influential part of the social welfare reforms of the Progressive Era. In an era when America became an urban industrialized nation, the development of the settlement house was interwoven with that of the American city, and settlement workers, living and working among the poor in the city, were in the vanguard of a wide range of social welfare reform initiatives. This selective bibliography covers titles providing an introduction and overview of the American Settlement Movement. Arranged in six categories, the titles include materials pertaining to the influence of the English Settlement Movement on the United States, general surveys discussing the American Settlement Movement within the context of larger reform efforts, studies focused on the Settlement Movement, biographical titles, settlement workers' research and case studies, and reference works. The bibliography provides easy access to the literature of the American Settlement Movement.
Book Description
The compelling mystery on Nova Scotia's "Treasure Island"
For 200 years the underground tunnels on Oak Island have frustrated treasure seekers trying to recover valuables buried there.
The authors of this 1999 book, uncovered important new evidence about excavation of the underground workings and the offshore structures, including the British military involvement in the 1752 flood tunnel.
Harris and MacPhie, both experienced underground engineers, draw on the documentary record to present a compelling and historically accurate description of the two centuries of treasure hunting on Oak Island. Whatever the origins of the treasure, this new edition offers convincing evidence of the role of British officials in building the complex underground structure which has defeated treasure hunters at the site to this day.

The Hard Facts.......2006-11-30
I found the book a slow read. Thats not the books fault as it's material covered a very important aspect of Oak Island from an Engineering/Geology point of view(most want a exciting pirate adventure daring you to get in line and take your chance). It includes among other information, precisely where boreholes were dug, how many and a conclusive update of the underlying geology of Oak Island. A necessary aspect of the mystery for anyone wanting all sides and all input about everything Oak ISland. I reccommend the book but warn the reader to tenaciously hunker down for the long haul, it'll be worth it. Thats why I gave it only 4 stars. The material is dry reading.
The Truth.......2004-07-07
Everyone loves a good treasure hunt and stories about pirates. For centuries explorers have been working their way through the mud, rock, and shafts of Oak Island in their illusive search of this mysterious prize. Does X mark the spot? Depends on where the spot is...now. This book gives great insight behind the mystery of Oak Island and defines some truth as to the tresures "existence". Where it lies today and is there a tresure to be found really depends on so much. Finally a book that explains the mystery with validity.
good work on an incredible mystery.......2003-06-30
The Oak Island mystery is one of the greatest treasure tales of all time. The authors are mining engineers who objectively delineate over 200 years of failed attempts to recover the treasure. One of the most amazing facts is that modern man, with all his heavy earth-moving equipment, drilling rigs and other technology has not been able to recover a treasure put in the ground in what was most likely the 17th century. And don't be fooled by other reviewers of the Oak Island mystery who claim to be skeptics or that it is merely a "natural sinkhole". Over the last two centuries, countless ancient artifacts, metal and unnaturally occurring substances such as putty, charcoal and coconut fiber has been pulled from the money pit. That is in addition to hand-hewn oak platforms that were discovered every 10 feet down or so in the pit. Also, extensive oak cofferdam supports and an excavated filter bed made of various materials including coconut fiber has been found in Smith's Cove.
The authors depart from previous works on the mystery by introducing intriguing new theories. One of these theories is that the original plan was to dig the money pit down to bedrock and deposit the treasure there or in an excavated space below the bedrock. After this was accomplished, water infiltration through the bedrock, which turned out to be porous, made recovery of the treasure impossible. As a result, the original treasure holders decided to make sure no one else could recover the treasure, and build the flood tunnel as insurance. This theory makes a great deal of sense when all of the facts are taken into consideration.
The second theory offered by the book is that the treasure was the major portion of the Spanish galleon Concepcion's booty, skimmed off by British Captain Phips and other British recovery operations of the wreck. While they have no direct proof supporting this theory, it is nevertheless a possibility, and there is some indirect evidence to support it, including a curious reference to gems and Lapis Lazuli in mineral rights covering the area. There is no known Lapis Lazuli deposits in that area of the world, although the Concepcion was known to be carrying quantities of it in their booty.
As a final thought, I once heard that there was a legend that seven people would die before the treasure would be recovered. Currently, six people have died trying to recover it. Care to give it a go?
The Oak Island Legend.......2000-06-22
I may as well state at the outset I am not a believer in the Oak Island Legend. However, this book is by far the best and most clearly written of the many Oak Island books I have read. The clarity of exposition is greatly assisted by the wealth of diagrams, maps, and tables. My personal preference would be to have the authors also consider the various "skeptical theories" of Oak Island, which they don't do. Whenever a seemingly mysterious fact is discussed, the authors do tend to accept it unquestioningly instead of also considering various ordinary ( if boring ) explanations. For example, if the flood tunnels exist, why has nobody ever been able to intercept them ?. Would not the entrance to the flood tunnel allegedly found by the Halifax Syndicate in 1867 and by the Oak Island Treasure Company in 1897 more reasonably be explained as the connecting tunnels dug into the pit from the same direction and at the same level by earlier syndicates ?. Explanations like this are usually eschewed in favour of more exciting ( but less plausible ?) explanations such as pirate tunnels and the like. Having said that, the book makes exciting reading, although at the end of the day I do not find it especially convincing.

Book Description
This book is an outstanding presentation of what happens during normal cerebellar development.
Book Description
This engaging and engrossing history of the brain and the emergence of modern neuroscience chronicles the many significant people and events that gradually produced today's understanding of brain anatomy and physiology. The book traces this unfolding story from the first findings of gross neuroanatomy in the ancient world to the functional analysis of the electrophysiology of nerve impulses; from the early discoveries of the existence and operations of the central nervous system to, finally, the development in brain chemistry and pharmacology that have now brought us to neural networks and brain modeling. Along the way it offers numerous historic and rare plates, a rich tapestry of quotations from primary sources, and concise summaries of the pathbreaking research that shaped and determined modern neuroscience.
Customer Reviews:
not an introduction.......2003-03-07
I would not recommend this book unless the areas of the brain are already known to the reader. It was well written and the history of the discoveries are well explained. I had trouble when, for example, the book would say a certain section of the brain was at one time thought to be the seat of all emotions. It would list various experiments that would take place. You ended up knowing the history, but not necessarily the location within the brain, or what the final verdict of that area of the brain actually turned out to be. I am sure with a little introductory background reading about the brain this book would have made more of an impact on me. I believe the author should have expended with a few more paragraphs to tie-in and explain the final result or today's best guess about that area of the brain.

I read this book doing research as a criminal defense lawyer. I found it fascinating and very helpful. thanks to editors.

Slim book, concise writing about the brain........2000-05-24
This little green book is a definite must-have addition to any neuroscientist, educator, or anyone interested in the brain. Restak is a good writer, and not only weaves his words well, but uses the writings of others outside the field to make understanding the complicated workings of the brain understandable to someone who is just being introduced to it. I've used this particular book in several papers on deafness and cognition, and every once in a while I pick it up and reread parts of it (usually that I marked) that bear remembering. Certainly Restak is a remarkable writer, and thus probably a remarkable teacher. I wish I had had someone like him in Neuroscience...it would have helped tremendously to have someone so in love with his topic that he wants everyone to understand it. We need more science teachers and science writers like him to encourage young people to consider science as a possible career. And perhaps maybe if more people understood the brain, they would quit treating their own brains without regard to the damage they are doing to it by using drugs and alcohol, or misusing prescription drugs. Karen L. Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu
An excellent introduction for the educated reader.......2000-05-18
Written for the layman, this slim (135 pages) volume by a neurologist is a very up to date and comprehensive review of what we know about the brain, its functional structure, the role of neurotransmitters and even a bit about the nature of conciousness.
Like Oliver Sachs, Restak focuses much of his attention on pathology, since not only is it the focus of neurologists, it also tells us quite a lot about the functional organization of the brain. Unlike Sachs, Restak delves deeply into the actual neuopathologies, the cells, the transmitters and the structure of the brain. While the level of detail is relatively superficial from a neuroanatomical point of view, the descriptions are still accurate and detailed; this would have been a nice introductory book to have for my first physiological psychology courses back in grad school.
As well as being an excellent teacher, Restak is an excellent storyteller. Each chapter reads like a good adventure, leading us through the neural pathways, or like a mystery, tracing the history of a particular neuropathology. If you enjoy the medical detective stories of Berton Rouche, or the essays of Lewis Thomas, you'll find much to interest you here.
Fellow physician/"brain-author" refers patients to this one!.......1999-10-07
I have recommended this book to many a patient, as well as professional colleagues interested in getting "up to speed" with brain basics. Scientifically sound, and very readable, anyone interested in the brain will find this introductory book enjoyable and to the point. May I suggest "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" for ways to tune up your own brain...Ken Giuffre' MD
A readable book for amateurs & beginners in neuroscience.......1999-08-27
This book is a simple overview about the subject of contemporary neuroscience. It is not intended for senior students or professionals. However, it is a good book for amateurs, since it was written in simple lauguage. It also gives a sense to beginning students about what they are actually studying. Since the author is a neurologist, this book has been adopted an extreme neurological veiwpoint as references to all human behaviors. Readers should be cautious about this; however, it is nevertheless one important way to look at human behaviors. Also, the book is a good buy and should worth a bargain.
just a point about 2.5 million neurons per minute.......1999-01-11
Brainscape, chapter II, page 37; 2.5 m. neurons per minutes are produces during prenatal life. Now take the book "The Amazing Brain", by Mr.Ornstein and Mr.Thompson, chapter 3,page 68, it says, "250,000 per minute" neurons during the development of a human fetus. Obviusly, I prefer your version Mr. Restak, it means much more neurons to spend during our life time without impairment. But, I just want to know who is right, because both of you can't be right and here we are talking about a huge contradiction regarding the neural theories explaining our future possibilities before birth. There is a legitimate intention to educate through these books, that is why I read them, but now I can't stay with this doubt created by these kind of books. Please educate me, and it would be an honor if Mr.Restak of any of his staff could answer this neurological dichotomy. Thank you very much for your attention.

Book Description
This volume is concerned with neurodegenerative disorders and age-related changes in the structure and function of the cerebral cortex, a topic that has attracted increasing interest as longevity and the number of aged individuals in the population increase.
Book Description
A major goal of this well-established textbook is to provide knowledge and understanding of neuroscience as a basis for clinical thinking. The strong emphasis on linking basic sciences with their clinical application has implications for the choices of which topics to treat in depth and which to treat more summarily - making this different from most other neuroscience textbooks. For example, topics of great practical importance like the cranial nerves, the autonomic nervous system, and pain are treated in depth. The book provides clear descriptions of brain structures and relates them to their functional properties by incorporating data ranging from molecular biology to clinical neurology and psychiatry. The focus is on fostering understanding of how the brain works rather than on the memorization of many details. Critical thinking is encouraged by providing information about the scientific basis for many "facts," and pointing out where the evidence is insufficient to reach final conclusions. The many two-color illustrations - based on the author's long experience in teaching medical students - make it easy to grasp complex structural and functional relationships. The third edition goes further than the previous ones in integrating material from all fields of the neurosciences. Two new chapters have been included on the vestibular system and control of eye movements, and all other chapters have been thoroughly revised. Although new material has been added, the total length of the text is virtually unchanged due to careful re-writing and elimination of less important material. There are many completely new figures and numerous others have been redrawn to enhance clarity.
Customer Reviews:
Poor diagrams, sloppy text.......2006-11-05
This was the recommended textbook for my Neuroanatomy class, so I bought it. Turns out, it didn't help very much. Now, in general I am more of a notes person than a textbook person, but with this book I used it more seldomly than usual. For some reason, the text doesn't speak to me as well as other books, and the figures aren't as well-drawn as other books. I ended up buying Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain by Mark F. Bear. It has better writing, and clearer diagrams.
The Central Nervous System - Structure and Function, Third E.......2004-06-18
The third edition of Per Brodal's book is beautifully produced and continues the traditions of excellence set up by the four editions of the same name published by his father Alf Brodal between 1949 and 1982. The book is clearly and concisely written and manages not to lose the reader in anatomical detail, while explaining physiological mechanisms. The diagrams are well thought out and text boxes are used to highlight physiological, pharmacological or anatomical details, when required, without perturbing the flow of the main text.
The book is aimed at medical students and successfully links basic and clinical science together. It includes new chapters on the control of eye movements and the vestibular system (entitled the sense of equilibrium) and all the remaining chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated to include data from molecular biology to clinical psychology. This makes the book refreshingly easy to read and I would recommend it as an informative text for medical students with interests in the CNS.
