    Book Description

Andrews Reath presents a selection of his best essays on various features of Kant's moral psychology and moral theory, with particular emphasis on his conception of rational agency and his conception of autonomy. The opening essays explore different elements of Kant's views about motivation, including his account of respect for morality as the distinctive moral motive and his view of the principle of happiness as a representation of the shared structure of non-moral choice. These essays stress the unity of Kant's moral psychology by arguing that moral and non-moral considerations motivate in essentially the same way. Several of the essays develop an original approach to Kant's conception of autonomy that emphasizes the political metaphors found throughout Kant's writings on ethics. They argue that autonomy is best interpreted not as a psychological capacity, but as a kind of sovereignty: in claiming that moral agents have autonomy, Kant regards them as a kind of sovereign legislator with the power to give moral law through their willing. The final essays explore some of the implications of this conception of autonomy elsewhere in Kant's moral thought, arguing that his Formula of Universal Law uses this conception of autonomy to generate substantive moral principles and exploring the connection between Kantian self-legislation and duties to oneself. The collection offers revised versions of several previously published essays, as well as two new papers, 'Autonomy of the Will as the Foundation of Morality' and 'Agency and Universal Law'. It will be of interest to all students and scholars of Kant, and to many moral philosophers.

Acton is probably most known for his quote: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton (1804-1902) was born to a wealthy English aristocrat and become a brilliant scholar. He was Victorian England's most renowned historian and political thinker. Acton was a Roman Catholic educated under the Catholic historian Ignaz von Dollinger in Munich. Acton found the idea of Papal Infallibility to be appalling. To Acton, holding the Vatican on a pedestal as the infallible arbiter of religious and moral conscience was detrimental to the cause of liberty. Acton was a classical liberal who seems to possess the prescriptive wisdom and prudence of Edmund Burke when it comes to politics.

This collection of essays and commentary features a selection of Acton's thoughts on the interrelation between church and state, religion, politics and morality. The first section features essays on Liberal Catholicism; the second section includes Acton's commentary on the Vatican Council; and the third section features Perspectives on History, Religion and Morality. The fourth and final section features an intriguing collection of quotations on various topics like Liberty, Conscience, Church, Democracy, Federalism, Nationality, Property and Socialism to name a few. This final section makes the book very useful resource for Acton's witticisms. I don't wholeheartedly embrace all of the ideas of Acton, but this book is nonetheless an eye-openning window into European Old Whig political thought during the 19th century.

      Book Description

This important book by a major American philosopher brings together eleven essays treating problems in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. A common point of view, that mathematical thought is central to our thought in general, underlies the essays. In his introduction, Parsons articulates that point of view and relates it to past and recent discussions of the foundations of mathematics.

Mathematics in Philosophy is divided into three parts. Ontology—the question of the nature and extent of existence assumptions in mathematics—is the subject of Part One and recurs elsewhere. Part Two consists of essays on two important historical figures, Kant and Frege, and one contemporary, W. V. Quine. Part Three contains essays on the three interrelated notions of set, class, and truth.

        Book Description

b /b b i Evolutionary Naturalism /i /b is a collection of interconnected essays on the history and philosopy of evolutionary biology written by the influential Canadian philosopher, Michael Ruse. In this book, he argues that the time has arrived to take philosophy out of the hands of the academic theorists and to fully embrace the findings and consequences of the modern sciences. br br These clearly written essays cover a broad range of key topics in the philosophy of science. Michael Ruse discusses several issues in the history of science including Darwinism, population biology, and the paleo-ontological theory of `punctuated equilibria'. In addition, he expounds an epistemological theory which argues that our knowledge of the external world is informed by the fact that we ar evolved beings, rather than objects of special creation. Ruse maintains that our evolved state must affect our knowledge and perception of the world in which we live. b /b b i Evolutionary Naturalism /i /b also contains a fierce critique of ethical systems which are rendered as no more than biologically determined collective illusions. br br In b /b b i Evolutionary /i /b b /b b i Materialism /i /b Michael Ruse forges a path between the crude objectivity espoused by many working scientists and the relativism of post-modern critiques of science. Written in a clear and non-technical style, this book provides valuable material for all those interested in the relationship between science and philosophy in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ethics Lectures!.......2005-02-08

Indeed, Wojtyla, now Pope John Paul II, is one of the most influential philosophers from the twentieth century. This book is a compilation of lectures Wojtyla gave while he was at that institution--Lublin. The book takes you through a historical perspective of Ethics : from Plato to St Thomas Aquinas and from Descartes to Scheller. This is an excellent book for anyone as it strives to point you to the answers of questions such as what is ethics? what is good and bad? What is the importance of a person? etc. The book also gives you excellent points to the source. The index is excellent and the introduction is a good one as well. Excellent for reasing and reference!

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Gap..........2003-05-14

In these lectures and essays, Pope John Paul bridges a gap between the metaphysical and the subjective. Here the Pope begins to develop a consistent treatment of the human person through upholding the objective and metaphysical foundations established in such philosophers as Thomas Aquinas while turning to the human person's subjectivity in experience as the irreducible foundation of examining the nature of man. The Pope uses the tools of phenemenology to complement and deepen the metaphyiscal foundations of human nature, ultimately revealing personhood.

I can't get enough!! Excellent for those interested in both Medieval philosophy and phenomenology. I literally have trouble putting this stuff down.

5 out of 5 stars A fine translation of the Ethics........2000-06-11

This volume is a fine translation of Spinoza's _Ethics_ together with some other writings that help to illuminate it -- namely, the _Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect_ and some well-chosen passages from Spinoza's correspondence.

Aside from its presentation of Samuel Shirley's clear and readable translation, this volume includes two additional helpful features. Seymour Feldman's workmanlike twenty-page introduction provides an overview of Spinoza's thought and of the main themes of the _Ethics_; and a translator's preface includes a list of twenty-four possibly confusing features of Spinoza's terminology with short explanations/clarifications. The TIE is of interest in its own right, and the items from Spinoza's correspondence are well selected to illustrate or elaborate some of the features of his more formal wriitngs.

5 out of 5 stars For Spinoza Fans........1999-03-14

Invaluable are the Introduction by Seymour Feldman and also, the Translator's Preface by Translator Samuel Shirley which gives lucid explanations of key Spinoza termsone of which is:

              From Page 23, Note 5 G-D(Deus)

"Although Spinoza gives repeated warnings that his "Deus" is far from the anthropomorphic conception of God prevalent in the theology of his time, the reader will find it difficult to bear this constantly in mind. It is not until Ethics 1, Prop.14, that God, by definition, is shown to be identical with the infinite, all-inclusive, unique Substance, and thereafter it is all too easy to lose sight of this, as the religious overtones of the word "God" keep asserting themselves. So Spinoza's frequent use of the phrase "Deus sive Natura"God, or Natureis intended as a salutary corrective. For Spinoza God is all Being, all Reality, in all its aspects and in all its infinite richness."

                      5 out of 5 stars Ship Ahoy!.......2004-09-05

Today [9/5] is the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the saga of the Morro Castle's fateful last voyage. When I first ran across the paperback version of this book 16 years ago and bought it on the spot, I opened it up and didn't close it until I'd read the whole thing. I just purchased through this site the hardback edition, which makes for even better reading with larger, clearer photos. This is a classic page-turner, filled with international political intrigue, Communist plottings, smuggling, murder, soulless corporate dealings [nothing new there], the "we need a spectacular ship" wish of a resort town turned into astounding prophecy, a quality- and safety-compromised ship and her disgruntled maltreated crew, and a deranged attention-starved psycho onboard lusting for revenge. Even though it's stated to have been "the first major sea disaster the media had covered," I'd never heard of this terrible tale, which should be ranked near the top [so to speak] of the ship disasters list of the 20th century. Why it hasn't been made into a movie is beyond me! Handled properly [without taking indecent liberties such as the fictional characters in "Titanic" (and the tired-puppy portrayals thereof)], this could be a line-down-the-block megahit! In the meantime, for those who like good spicy stories, I highly recommend this well-written, highly informative 5+ stars sizzler, whose only narrative flaw is annoying repetition involving some geographic details and the year involved. "I couldn't put it down!" definitely applies here, because it sure hooked me from start to finish!

                              Book Description

Discrete Event Simulation is a process-oriented text/reference that utilizes an eleven-step model to represent the simulation process from problem formulation to implementation and documentation. The book presents the necessary level of detail required to fully develop a model that produces meaningful results and considers the tools necessary to interpret those results. Sufficient background information is provided so that the underlying concepts of simulation are understood. Major topics covered in Discrete Event Simulation include probability and distributional theory, statistical estimation and inference, the generation of random variates, verification and validation techniques, time management methods, experimental design, and programming language considerations. The book also examines distributed simulation and issues related to distributing the physical process over a network of tightly coupled processors. Topics covered in this area include deadlock, synchronization, rollback, event management, and communication processes. Fully worked examples and numerous practical exercises have been drawn from the engineering disciplines and computer science, although they have been structured so that they will be useful as well to other disciplines such as economics, business administration, and management science. The presentation of techniques and methods in Discrete Event Simulation make it an ideal text/reference for all practitioners of discrete event simulation.
