This book (along with Theory for Social Change) saved my spirit and will save the spirit of any Black person that reads it. It is incredible and the Elder covers just about every aspect pertaining to the Black experience. This book is a precursor to Pan Africanism. Buy it!!!
A racial hermeneutical masterpiece!.......1999-10-09
Molefi Asante's groundbreaking text The Afrocentric Idea offers an honest critique of the power structures behind the rhetorical foundation of how Americans view race and ethnic tradition. Truly Asante is worthy of being the top contemporary writer in Afrocentricity

Book Description
This classic in the philosophy of science describes and analyzes the profound change from the philosophy of the Middle Ages to the modern view of humanity's less central place in the universe. It offers a fascinating analysis of the works of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Hobbes, Gilbert, Boyle, and Newton.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2006-03-27
A superb account of the development of the physical model of the Universe culminating in the Newtonian framework. What sets this book apart from others is how Burtt attacks the interplay between the philosophical, social, and religious worldviews characteristics of the time period.
Burtt overthrows some of the conceptions still held today that the religious paradigm was the overrdiding impediment to the acceptance of the Copernican framework among the scientific community. Burtt demonstrates how the scientific community of the time had no need to revise the epicycles and deferrents of the ptolemaic scheme. It was only through the argument of greater simplicity and the appeal to the neo-platonic mathematical ideals that it became more widely accepted.
A must read for any student of science interested in the complex interplay of ideas that eventually led to the rationale for and acceptance of Newtonian mechanics and the resulting metaphysical framework.
Clear, focused and enlightening, even 80+ years after it was written........2006-02-26
I'm usually disappointed in books on the philosophy of science written by theologians, but this one is a refreshing, delightful and informative exception. It has taken me a week of focused study to read and absorb, so it's definitely not a light, quick read. But it is very clearly and thoughtfully written, and I can't recommend it strongly enough for the reader who seeks to understand where the basic concepts of classical Newtonian physics came from, what they replaced, and how they fit together.
Extremely dull and scatterbrained presentation........2006-01-12
The style of the book is very dry, and it's not the kind of dryness associated with technical depth -- the book digresses constantly without much cohesiveness using a style that is also chatty and distracting, and takes liberties with a sort of philosophical poetic style that is modern to the 1950's Tweed Circuit. Worst of all, the book tends to remain superficial and moves from one topical subject to another without analysis of any depth, in particular, it lacks any sort of mathematical rigor although it describes mathematical trends -- as a result, the book has a mushy arbitrary feel to it -- because ideas are suggested but never clarified in a mathematical context, and non-mathematical concepts are poorly clarified. The author also likes to name-drop great scientists or great books or broad philosophical categories, and in using such tokens rather than more precise concepts, there is a sense of vagueness as you move throught the book. The book quotes heavily from source texts, which is a good thing, but doesn't tie the topics together effectively. The author poses a lot of questions, but then uses a style of "Before we answer that question, lets consider...", and goes on to another topic, not clearly related to the first topic, and then DOES NOT BOTHER TO ADDRESS the original question posed. Quite annoying.
As an alternate I recommend Richard S. Westfall's technically excellent "The Construction of Modern Science", which covers similar topics, with less historical range, but in much more interesting and compelling depth.
A Must Read for Philosophy of Science.......2004-11-12
I can only second Bob Meyer's excellent review. I found this book fascinating and informative, and likely overlooked. I recommend it highly.
Addendum.......2004-07-04
(FOR SOME REASON THIS REVIEW SHOWS ONE STAR--THAT OBVIOUSLY IS NOT MY OPINION OF BURTT'S BOOK. I DON'T KNOW HIS BOOK WELL ENOUGH TO RATE IT, BUT LIKE WHAT I DO KNOW OF IT.) I want to add a brief note to Bob Meyer's excellent and comprehensive review. In his important but apparently almost entirely neglected "Husserl's phenomenology and the foundations of natural science" (Ohio University Press, 1989), Charles W. Harvey draws extensively on Burtt's work. It seems that the philosopher Edmund Husserl developed in great detail the kind of view and critique Burtt later offered of the noxious consequences of the mathematization of human experience, the bifurcation into the mind(experience)-world dichotomy. (Husserl was Heidegger's principal teacher, and I recently have come to believe that Heidegger's famous critique of rational-technological thinking ["Enframing", "Gestell"] is little more than a pretentious rehash of his teacher's thought.) I highly recommend reading at least the first few chapters of Harvey's book as an enrichment of Burtt.

"Does the nature and belief of the observer have anything to do with what is observed?" The most comprehensive examination of the role of causality in our understanding of reality, this book is the fruit of the Institute of Noetic Sciences' Causality Project: research into what constitutes reality, and how things happen. We ask whether the fundamental assumptions embedded in the current scientific paradigm place "blinders" or at least boundaries on what contemporary science is free to discover.

Book Description
In this first book-length treatment of Descartes' important and influential natural philosophy, Daniel Garber is principally concerned with Descartes' accounts of matter and motion—the joint between Descartes' philosophical and scientific interests. These accounts constitute the point at which the metaphysical doctrines on God, the soul, and body, developed in writings like the Meditations, give rise to physical conclusions regarding atoms, vacua, and the laws that matter in motion must obey.
Garber achieves a philosophically rigorous reading of Descartes that is sensitive to the historical and intellectual context in which he wrote. What emerges is a novel view of this familiar figure, at once unexpected and truer to the historical Descartes.
The book begins with a discussion of Descartes' intellectual development and the larger project that frames his natural philosophy, the complete reform of all the sciences. After this introduction Garber thoroughly examines various aspects of Descartes' physics: the notion of body and its identification with extension; Descartes' rejection of the substantial forms of the scholastics; his relation to the atomistic tradition of atoms and the void; the concept of motion and the laws of motion, including Descartes' conservation principle, his laws of the persistence of motion, and his collision law; and the grounding of his laws in God.

The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Science.......2006-06-21
This modern classic in the philosophy of science describes and analyzes the greatest revolution in the history of Western thought - the shift from the medieval to the modern view of man's place in the universe. Through close and exact examination of the works of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Hobbes, Gilbert, Boyle amd Newton, Professor Burtt established the reasons for the triumph of the new view of the world, and also describes certain limitations in this view which have characterized modern science to the present day. This is a criticism as well as a history of the change that made posible the rise of modern science. It is also a guide to the understanding of the methods and accomplishments of the great philosopher-scientists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Book Description
Here is a much needed study of the American historian and philosopher, E.A. Burtt. H. Floris Cohen, author of "The Scientific Revolution, A Historiography", has described Burtt as an "individual thinker...beyond philosophical or historical currents or fashion." Burtt's book,
The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Physical Science, is something of a puzzle within the context of twentieth-century intellectual history, especially American intellectual history. Burtt's pioneering study of the scientific revolution has proved to prophetic in its rejection of both scientism and positivism. Published in 1924, Burtt's book continues to be read in educated circles and remains both the rose and the thorn on university reading lists, raising skeptical questions about science methods and science knowledge just as it did seventy-five years ago.
This book examines Burtt's public, academic and personal life. From his politics of conscience after World War I on through the Cold War Burtt is shown to be a man of unparalleled integrity, whose relentless search for philosophic understanding drove his more quixotic philosophical quests and steered his personal life, including its tragic dimension, toward simple virtue.
The many who have been affected by
The Metaphysical Foundations will be especially interested in this new perspective on the life and thought of its author. Those who have not read Burtt's books might be inspired to study this unusual American thinker.

Book Description
Mass ideology is unique to modern society and rooted in early modern philosophy. Traditionally, knowledge had been viewed as resting on metaphysics. Rejecting metaphysical truth evoked questions about the source of "truth." For nineteenth-century ideologists, "truth" comes either from dominating classes in a progressively determined history or from a post-Copernican freedom of the superior man to create it. In From Physics to Politics Robert C. Trundle, Jr. uncovers the relation of modern philosophy to political ideology. And in rooting truth in human nature and Nature by modal reasoning, he resolves the problem of politicized truth.
Our concepts of scientific truth, logic, and necessity are essentially connected. Modern philosophy restricts our understanding of necessity to the political dreams and aspirations of Enlightenment intellectuals. As a result, these intellectuals refuse to acknowledge as factual or meaningful whatever is not intelligible within the practical goals of establishing science as a system of enlightened ideas. The effect of these ideas is that in our time metaphysical principles, speculative truths, our understanding of science, and the nature of logic have become subordinated to ideological dreams. Fascism, Nazism, Marxism, political correctness, and moral relativism are not historical aberrations but essential consequences.
Trundle's work is groundbreaking and daring, and his underlying thesis demonstrates why scientific truth demands a modal defense. The defense not only integrates science, ethics, and politics, but shows how "truth" may be ascribed to moral and scientific principles in contrast to a modern philosophical tradition. Since this tradition is the origin of political ideology, it has led to an irrational politicization of truth. The book will appeal particularly to those interested in political history, histories of philosophy, the philosophy of sciences, and ethics.
