My oldest son is going into his senior year in college. He will be working on Forensic classes and I purchased a few fun reads for the summer. He loves the book.
The trials of being a forensic anthropologist.......2007-06-12
I recieved this book as a gift when I was in high school. I loved it then. Since I've recently finished a Masters in forensic anthropology myself, I decided to pull it off my shelf and give it another run through.
This is hands down the most honest and truthful illustration of what it's like to work in this field in a market flooded with a glut of products dedicated to the likes of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Every Bones/CSI fan needs to read this book and learn about the un-glamorous parts of these careers. I went into my career as a forensic anthropologist with a realistic understanding of the job because of Dr. Maples' great prose. While the CSI wannabes whine about the maggots and the smell, I do my job.
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in forensic science and should be a required read in introductory courses.
Thoughtful and Fascinating.......2007-03-22
Considering the gruesome nature of Dr. Maples' work, this is a remarkably delicate and poetic book. While the scientific descriptions are detailed, they at no point talk down to the reader. The photographs are tasteful and relevant, and I appreciate that Dr. Maples treats his subjects with respect due to the other human beings who are so often objectified into "human remains" or "evidence". Fascinating work, and great writing - I devoured it!
The only textbook I kept from college..........2006-12-28
Oh, if only I could rank this as 6 stars ******.
I took a forensics class at UNC Wilmington (little did I know that they would offer a forensics major there years after I graduated with a business degree). I was required to have this book and the day I picked it up from the student bookstore, I read it cover to cover. I still pick it up and read it from time to time. When I lent it to a friend, they lost it and so I came online here and found it as a hardback version!
On a side note: the student in the story that mistook a breast implant for a jellyfish? Yeah, that was my forensics professor when she was a student!

Fascinating case studies from a forensic anthropologist, including a detailed examination of his most famous cases - Pizarro, Zachary Taylor, Czar Nicholas II, and Joseph Merrick ("The Elephant Man"). A gripping read.

A good introduction for children to the field of bird watching........2006-09-02
The Peterson guides are a well established in the birding world. I was looking for a good basic introductory book for my young daughter who, like me, enjoys bird watching. This book has a list of the most common birds that we're likely to see in our backyard. I like the way it's divided by feather coloration rather than by species or group of species. This makes it easier for a child to learn to identify the birds in a non-overwhelming way. I plan to buy the rest of the series for our family's field library.

Fold-out laminated field guide with excellent drawings!.......1999-05-15
This really useful field guide has great drawings of over 100 species found in neighborhoods in US and Canada. Has a simple system to instantly tell you the region and feeding preferences of birds, in other words, where you are most likely to find them. The drawings are beautiful, colorful and accurate, clearly showing the difference between male and female, and defining markings. I've enjoyed mine thoroughly!

I thought this was a book!.......2007-08-15
I thought this was a book, but it is actually a pamphlet. It only shows the picture of the bird and it's name. I had trouble getting it, and when I ordered it, I recieved it 6 weeks later in an envelope! I still am looking for a good informational book on birds.

"It's a Jungle Out There".......2002-08-15
This is the book that really peaked my interest in ways to garden that would also benefit wildlife. I purchased this small manual in 1989 and continue to use it as a source of reference. The author, Craig Tufts wrote it while he was a naturalist for the National Wildlife Federation.
The book covers a lot of different material and there are six chapters: MAKING A PLACE FOR WILDLIFE---FEEDING BIRDS---WHO'S WHO AMONG YOUR BACKYARD BIRDS---IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE---MAKING OTHER VISITORS WELCOME and WOOING WILDLIFE WITH WATER, FLOWERS AND SHELTER.
The information provided is just what I was looking for. I've used the easy recipe for making hummingbird nectar for years and I keep four feeders going all summer. A great thrill was seeing seven hummingbirds at one time all hovering for a place at a feeder. You can also learn which plants are best so that you can entice these lovely little birds to your garden. The little "Hummers" are attracted to bright colors and prefer flowers that are tubular in shape such as lobelia and trumpet vine.
Most people are familiar with the marigold plant, but besides being easy to grow, the flowers also provide food for several bird species. This book is also chock full of fascinating information about butterflies, birds, bugs and various other creatures. Oh, one last teaser, you can also learn the identity of the Tomato Bandit, the robber and thief of many gardens.
I did have the opportunity to meet the author when we both attended a butterfly count a few years ago. I had my trusty book with me and he was kind enough to autograph it for me.
