Book Description
Edgar award-winning author of the popular historical novels A Conspiracy of Paper and A Spectacle of Corruption, David Liss showcases his amazing versatility with this brilliant new tale of contemporary suspense: a literary thriller set in Florida, where killing is a matter of conscience.
No one is more surprised than Lem Altick when it turns out he’s actually good at peddling encyclopedias door to door. He hates the predatory world of sales, but he needs the money to pay for college. Then things go horribly wrong. In a sweltering trailer in rural Florida, a couple whom Lem has spent hours pitching is shot dead before his eyes, and the unassuming young man is suddenly pulled into the dark world of conspiracy and murder. Not just murder: assassination– or so claims the killer, the mysterious and strangely charismatic Melford Kean, who has struck without remorse and with remarkable good cheer. But the self-styled ethical assassin hadn’t planned on a witness, and so he makes Lem a deal: Stay quiet and there will be no problems. Go to the police and take the fall.
Before Lem can decide, he is drawn against his will into the realm of the assassin, a post-Marxist intellectual with whom he forms an unlikely (and perhaps unwise) friendship. The ethical assassin could be a charming sociopath, eco-activist, or vigilante for social justice. To unravel the mystery and save himself, Lem must descend deep into a bizarre world he never knew existed, where a group of desperate–and genuinely deranged–schemers have hatched a plan that will very likely keep Lem from leaving town alive.
David Liss skillfully interweaves a gallery of eccentric characters with a multilayered plot characterized by its unpredictable twists and turns. The Ethical Assassin is a brilliant, darkly comic novel that will leave readers in suspense until the very last page.
Customer Reviews:
A Gifted Writer; a Rare Read.......2007-09-09
David Liss has a sense for history. He has a taste for telling a terrific tale.
Sure, his latest novel recycles familiar conventions--drug dealers, missing money, an innocent hero mixed up with bad guys. But he delivers it with flair and style. Less cerebral than The Coffee Trader, the author still manages to entertain with this unique tale set in Florida during the summer of 1985.
The engaging story involves pig farming, door-to-door encyclopedia sales and crystal meth production. The characters are vivid. The action grabs the reader in the opening chapter and does not let up until the final page. In short, it is a hypnotic page-turner.
Liss is an author who should not be missed.
Another solid effort by Liss.......2007-08-26
In his first three novels (A Conspiracy of Paper, A Spectacle of Corruption and The Coffee Trader), David Liss told tales that took place in the England and Holland of centuries ago. In The Ethical Assassin, he has again written a historical mystery, but the time in question is much more recent: the 1980s. He has also departed Europe for rural Florida. This book proves an essential point: regardless of time or setting, Liss is a great writer.
The Ethical Assassin opens with Lem Atlick going door-to-door trying to sell encyclopedias to raise funds for college. He is about to complete a sale to a couple when they are both gunned down in their home by Melford Kean, the ethical assassin of the title. Melford has his reasons for killing the two, but he doesn't want to kill Lem; nonetheless, as insurance, he forces Lem to put his prints on the murder weapon.
Kean turns out to be one of the least of Lem's problems. There is also the fact that his bosses seem to be entangled in drug dealing, his two co-workers are vicious bullies and he has run afoul of a small-town police chief who is a truly loathsome fellow. Next to these folks - as well as the big boss who is a borderline pedophile (he never fully acts on his desires) - Kean seems like a relatively nice guy. Lem is forced into friendship with Kean as things get messier.
It is not difficult to see parallels between this book and the works of Carl Hiaasen, a point that doesn't escape many of the critical blurbs in the book. There is the Florida setting, the healthy dose of often-dark humor and the collection of off-beat characters. But Liss is not merely a Hiaasen knock-off, but a good author in his own right. And if you enjoy mystery novels with a bit of tongue-in-cheek (and an interesting message about animal rights), this should be well worth picking up.
a message wrapped in pulp fiction.......2007-07-07
I am a fan of David Liss and have read a number of his books. The Ethical Assassin is a departure from his other works but was a fun summer read that captured my interest and inspired some thought beyond the humor and the pulp fiction. A comparison with Carl Hiaasen is valid for this read.
An Amusing Tale.......2007-07-06
I've been a fan of Liss' novels for some time now. This book is certainly a departure from his work to date (all of which have been historical dramas), and some of the other reviewers correctly point out that this effort could well be mistaken for a Hiassen novel. Regardless, I enjoyed it. If you step back and forget about his earlier works, and evaluate this book as if you were reading a first time author, you can't help but conclude that it is an enjoyable read. Cheers to Liss for trying something different, I can certainly understand an author not wanting to get stereotyped as writing only one particular type of fiction.
Carl Hiassen should get royalties.......2007-05-19
Even Carl Hiassen books aren't original anymore, he's done the formula so many times. It's even less original coming from Liss. Add to that a moral that hits you over the head with story-stopping monologues, and you get a one-star review. Liss can do so much better.

Very nice compendium!.......2005-12-13
Michael Benson, whom I know from research conferences (and who mentions me a few times in his follow-up book), has written a great compendium of information on the JFK assassination. This is truly a great all-in-one-place volume. Get this!

The best book someone would need on the JFK assassination........1998-06-14
I have been reading books on the assassination of John Kennedy my entire life. Then I came across this book, "Who's Who in the JFK Assassination", I couldn't beleive it. Never before did I read through a book so fast and when I was done, I had to go back and start over. It's not really meant to read cover-to-cover, though. When I am reading a book on the assassination, and see a name I don't know, I can flip to it in this book and know just who this man is. For anyone who has looked at the assassination, they know you come across hundreds of names and you can't remember them all, thats where this book came in. Let's say I see the name Ruby Henderson; I can look her up in this book and find out she saw TWO men in the 6th floor of the TSBD, one of whom had a rifle, but she thought they were with the secret service. Anyway, I would tell ANY person looking for information on the Kennedy Assassination to get this book anyway they can. What else can I say, Michael Benson did a GREAT job.

Book Description
This fully updated and revised edition provides a thorough look at the many world leaders who met their end in a violent manner during the last century, from William Goebel, Kentucky's Democratic gubernatorial nominee in the election of 1899 who was shot on January 30, 1900, when he contested the election he narrowly lostto General Ansumane Mane, the former army chief of staff ousting President Bernardo Vieira of Guinea-Bissau who was killed in a gun battle with soldiers in Blom on November 30, 2000.
This book includes political assassinations, political executions, unsuccessful attempts against major world figures, and overviews of violent political events and their major victims. Arranged chronologically, the entries detail the manner, the motive, the assailant (when known), brief biographical information on the victims, the immediate effects on the political climate of the day, and in some cases, the final fate of the assassins. The prologue provides a summary of those leaders whose assassinations fell before this period.

Very Good, but ULTIMATE SACRIFICE the best book ever .......2005-12-21
While I thought this book was worthwhile in many respects (I am mentioned on several pages, as well), ULTIMATE SACRIFICE is simply the best book ever on the JFK assassination. Still, worth your time: a nice overview of the case.

BEST JFK ASSASSINATION BOOK: ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

Great Book-2 Thumbs Up.......2003-11-20
One of the best books I've read regarding the JFK Assassination. It is an excellent resource material for the many theories surrounding the assassination. The entries are listed in alphbetical order, which makes cross-referencing very easy and the photos and the maps are helpful. This book is full of interesting information. Also, check out some of the author's previous work such as, "Who's Who in the JFK Assassination: An A to Z Encyclopedia" or "Ballparks of America: A Comprehensive Historical Reference to Baseball Grounds, Yards and Stadiums, 1845 to Present".
non-fiction?.......2003-09-14
This is a terrible book. It presents highly speculative and unfounded conspiracy theories as if they're actually true! It doesn't belong on the non-fiction shelf of the library, which is where I found it. Please don't spend money on authors like this, who have no qualms about making a profit by spreading lies about the assassination of JFK.
An Excellent Resource.......2003-06-23
The Encyclopedia of the JFK Assassination is one of the best resources I've found for access to many obscure and rarely mentioned minor characters in this historical mystery. This book avoids any breathless disclosures in favor of excellent detail on many of the blind alleys and unknown people who are a part of the historical record, but are rarely mentioned. Open at any page, and you will be intrigued by at least one entry, and will find yourself following the cross references to other entries throughout the book. I find that I often bookmark pages to come back to later, even after having read virtually everything credible done on the subject. Highly recommended for your bookshelf.

From Slavery... Freedom.......2005-03-08
Patterson, a Harvard Professor who made his bones writing about slavery in the New World, turns his focus to the roots of the "value complex" we Americans call "freedom". Although this is volume one of a two volume set, the author himself refers to the second volume as a "footnote" in the history of freedom.
Patterson discusses four different time periods and their impact on the development of freedom. First, the Greeks, next, the Romans, third, Christianity and fourth The Middle Ages.
Cabining his discussion of all four time periods are two guiding precepts. FIrst, that western freedom consists of three constituent elements which combine to make Western freedom "chordal". The elements are sovereignal, civic and personal freedom. Patterson goes to great length to demonstrate that while modern thinkers (post enlightenement) equate "freedom" with personal and civic freedom, the type of freedom most people were familiar with back in the day was, in fact, "sovereignal" freedom, which can be described as "freedom through absolute devotion to a god/king/emperor/leader" through which the followers remain free.
The second main insight is that a "slave society" is a pre condition for the development of freedom. In other words, freedom developed from the yearnings of slaves to escape bondage. In that way, freedom, the west's greatest achievment is bound up in the unspeakable evil of slavery. I found that particular insight illuminating.
Worthy of a read, although it takes a while to muddle through. Patterson is fond of both the academic "we" and citing extensively from specialist scholars. On the whole a worthwhile investment of time. Extensively footnoted for follow up reading
A Bourgeois' Attempt to Understand Freedom.......2003-12-12
Mr. Patterson is a bourgeois who understands freedom from a typical husbandman's perspective. What he doesn't see is the perspective of nomads, gypsies, wandering artists, etc., i.e. the moving crowd. He did not look at them, and by this missed the chance to write about a commitment to freedom much deeper and older than the attempts of the people bound to their soil or community. Also, he neglects the Jewish heritage of Christianity and its fight for freedom. Obviously he has not read Michael Walzer's "Exodus and Revolution". If he had, he would have known that the first successful attempt to become free from slavery did not happen in Greece but in the desert between Egypt and Palestine. It was not Greek rhetoric about freedom but the Exodus story that gave spiritual power to the civil rights movement.
Life Altering Book.......2002-07-18
This book literally changed my life. I stumbled on it at a [local bookstore] (sorry Amazon). Through this Marxist scholar I learned pride in the accomplishments of my culture i. e. Western Civilization.
While his Marxist training sometimes peeks through, in asides, it never interferes in his central theme which ultimately destroys the foundations of Marxist thought and propaganda.
His skill is in weaving facts about the West, we all know but have displaced because of left wing historical revision, into a compelling and coherent pagent about the "invention" of freedom.
This Marxist turned me into a proud conservative.
Is he contradicting himself?.......1999-09-24
I was especially taken by Patterson's book on the sociology of Slavery. However, in this book he appears to contradict himself. Maybe. In his 1982 book Patterson tendered that Greek polis and Roman slavery ought not to be confused with modern, capitalistic notions of freedom. If freedom was yearned for by slaves and freedom indeed was a virtue aspired to particulary by women and slaves, then, what of the paranome and operae obligations, reciprocal obligatons that was part and parcel of first century Mediterranean societies. Indeed Peter Garnsey and Richard Saller have admitted that even while the Romans may have given their slaves citizenship along with their freedom, this act was always undergirded in the interests of the owner. The slave had to work out his obligations. Why does not Patterson talk about these obligations, a social-anthropological reality? Or, is Berlin right in stating that freedom as we know it is a modern phenomena, something that Patterson himself observed in 1982, Slavery and Social Death?
A fascinating and inspiring work from an unlikely source........1998-05-03
Who would have thought that a Marxist sociologist at Harvard could write a profoundly moving account of the history of freedom? Patterson delivers a highly readable account of the "three chords of freedom" as they evolved in the ancient world, were crushed during the Roman empire, and were reborn and spread worldwide by history's first freedom-centered religion, Christianity. The book has just two small flaws: the author's frequent references to rusty Marxist notions of class struggle, and the sketchy and incomplete character of the final chapters and conclusion. Still, it is a marvelous read. I for once can hardly wait for volume 2, expected in 1999.

Book Description
The first broad account offering a non-mathematical, unified treatment of solid state chemistry. Describes synthetic methods, X-ray diffraction, principles of inorganic crystal structures, crystal chemistry and bonding in solids; phase diagrams of 1, 2 and 3 component systems; the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of solids; three groups of industrially important inorganic solids--glass, cement, and refractories; and certain aspects of organic solid state chemistry, including the ``organic metal'' of new materials.
Customer Reviews:
An uneven treatment; a book from a ceramist's perspective.......2005-05-17
Where this book is good, it is very good. Where it is isn't, it is badly dated and incomplete. I suspect that the book's shortcomings stem from West's sole authorship - he just doesn't know much about a broad swath of this subject. A subject as broad and interdisciplinary as solid state chemistry demands a text written by at least two (but not more than three) knowledgeable solid state chemists. West needs a coauthor!
The good parts. Synthesis of bulk solids, particularly as applied to oxides. Interpretation of Phase diagrams & Ionic Conductivity and Solid Electrolytes - best treatments in any introductory text. Glasses & Cement and Concrete - not complete of course, but good introductions.
The adequate parts: Most of the material related to characterization of solids. Diffraction, spectroscopy, crystal symmetry, crystal defects, ionic bonding. Not terribly exciting treatment or imaginative in coverage, but adequate.
Completely dated - obsolete even when the book was first published: all subjects requiring a quantum-mechanical treatement, e.g., magnetism, electrical conductivity, all treatment of bonding other than ionic or hydrogen-bonded systems.
A common but expensive text about solid chemistry.......2001-12-07
I couldn't consider the best book I've read about solid chemistry but it is complete for graduate students. The crystaline structure is well treated but it's poor in the quantum approach. My teacher loves this book as she was a student of Anthony West but I don't like it. I bought it 'cause I was robbed and I lost this book and now I need to get it back to the library.
Prepare to mortgage your house for this book.......2001-06-03
This is an EXCELLENT, comprehensive book on solid state chemistry. However, the expense of this book is a joke. Save yourself the money, and check it out at a university library.
It was the best of books, it was the worst of books.......1998-07-25
Attending the University of Aberdeen from 1990-94, it was my pleasure to receive solid state chemistry lectures from the author, Professor West.
He was always very clear, concise, and helpful, if terribly busy.
The book was the magnum opus of the Inorganic Department, and was widely used throughout. It covers a very large range of topics, and is rather impressive for its clarity and breadth of information.
Despite the rather phenomenal expense, the book is well worth the price FOR THOSE involved in theoretical and practical applications of solid state chemistry. In my current work as a solid state research chemist, the book has proven an invaluable resource and without peer.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Modern fracture mechanics considers phenomena at many levels, macro and micro; it is therefore inextricably linked to methods of theoretical and mathematical physics. This book introduces these sophisticated methods in a straightforward manner. The methods are applied to several important phenomena of solid state physics which impinge on fracture mechanics: adhesion, defect nucleation and growth, dislocation emission, sintering, the electron beam effect and fractal cracks. The book shows how the mathematical models for such processes may be set up, and how the equations so formulated may be solved and interpreted. The many open problems which are encountered will provide topics for MSc and PhD theses in fracture mechanics, and in theoretical and experimental physics. As a supplementary text, the book can be used in graduate level courses on fracture mechanics, solid matter physics, and mechanics of solids, or in a special course on the application of fracture mechanics methods in solid matter physics.

Description:
The focus of this paper is on energy efficiency of domestic equipment. It is contended that, in the UK and-by extension-elsewhere. Government has to take the lead in defining low-energy standards for products. In the absence of policy, manufacturers do not recognize the need for carbon reductions in the equipment they design and consumers are unaware of the variation in energy performance in the product range. At present, neither market pull nor technology push can be relied upon to deliver energy savings. The imposition of a weak minimum standard on domestic fridges and freezers in 1999 will, over the lifetime of the appliances already sold by December 2002, save 1Mt C of carbon dioxide at nil cost to government or to the manufacturers, and a net benefit to consumers of @$855 m: a highly cost-effective policy. The difference between energy efficiency and energy conservation is that it takes time for the cumulative benefits of an energy efficiency improvement to result in the maximum effect on energy demand reduction: the benefits of the 1999 energy efficiency standard will accumulate until at least 2020. This period is equivalent to the cycle of stock replacement for that particular object. The final level of energy conservation depends upon the offsetting effects of growth in ownership levels and the size of new equipment purchases.
