For nearly three decades, Ping Chong and his company have written and staged some of the most innovative and arresting examinations of "the Other" on stages in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His work more than any other artist has explored the ways Asian cultures have intersected with contemporary American society and throughout history.
This volume collects four of his masterworks created over the past decade, including:
Deshima (1990), a documentary collage of the history of the West and Japan;
Chinoiserie (1995), spans centuries, continents and cultures, where the mysterious East meets the mysterious West;
After Sorrow (1997), explores the legacy of war in Vietnam;
Pojagi (1999), a poetic documentary on Korea from the sixteenth century to today.

Ping Chong was born in 1946 and raised in the Chinatown section of New York City. He began his theatrical career with Meredith Monk and later founded his own company in 1975, which later became Ping Chong and Company. It was created to explore the meaning of contemporary theatre and art on a national and international level. He has created over fifty major works for the stage, including Humboldt's Current, Nosferatu, Kind Ness, and Undesirable Elements. His works have received numerous Obie and Bessie Awards and are performed throughout the world.

Ping Chong's exciting new anthology, The East/West Quartet, consists of four multimedia plays about the history of East -West relations. The first, Deshima (1990) focuses on Japan's relationships with the West, Western and Japanese colonialism, and the collision of different cultures. Utilizing the visual arts-the influence of Japanese wood cuts on Van Gogh painting style-as a framework, Chong examines the changes in Japan's political and economic power in relation to European countries. The three other "poetic documentary" pieces in this anthology are Chinoiserie (1995) that explores Chinese history, After Sorrow (1997) examining Vietnamese history and Pojagi (1999) that focuses on Korean history. Each play combines speech, movement, and dance to explore how European, Japanese and American colonization, invasions, and the economic and political restructuring of the postcolonial period have impacted these countries. When the Civil War broke out, Clara Barton wanted more than anything to be a Union soldier, an impossible dream for a thirty-nine-year-old woman, who stood a slender five feet tall. Real Protrait of a Real Woman.......2003-08-06
As a nurse I have heard and read about Clara Barton for years. This book finally reinvents the tired images - melodramatic icon of female self sacrifice and courage, angel on earth and of the battlefield - and offers the reader a compelling, warm and very real picture of the person and personality of this famous individual. We see all aspects of Clara's character and the impact of the many choices she makes. We even get to see a few of the skeletons in her closet. Without this book, I doubt we would know that there were any! The amount of detail - and it is considerable - is so beautifully woven into the historical narrative that the story, like the Civil War, sweeps the reader from one new experience to the next. Read this and you will feel the jolting of army wagons along rutted roads, struggle to rest as the canvas flaps of your tent crack and strain in storms, gallop with joyful abandon along the beaches at Hilton Head - and much more. I purchased my copy at Gettyburg and it is the best "souvenir" purchase I ever made. Bravo to Stephen Oates!
Educational and Entertaining to read. A must have book!.......1997-04-07
Mr. Oates has done it again. You will know Clara Barton ambitions, downfalls, her emotions as well as her eager drive and personal duty to serve those who suffered so much during the Civil War years.
The contents of this book will jump out at you and you'll feel that you're right next to the personalities involved. Oh, what women had to go through to pursue a dream or an ambition to contribute to society. Clara has a heart of gold as her patients in and off the field well knew, yet she was being torn apart on the inside by the constant fear that she wasn't doing enough for "her boys". Her personal life was put on the back shelf as she persued her one desire, to help those who were less fortunate. You'll follow Clara as she goes through the blood, sweat, tears, agony and the horrors of the war.
This is a true story of a dark chapter in our american history when brother fought against brother literally. It is also of a dream turned into reality that Clara Barton followed with a sincere robust ambition to pursue the betterment of her fellow man. By caring for the soldiers on the battlefield, she proved to the Union Army that those suffering needed love, compassion and of course medical care where it was most needed - on the front lines of battle.

Great GI book.......2007-05-28
This book is very helpful and is a straight forward approach to better understanding the GI and how it affects your body. I previoulsly read the Glycemic Revolution and was deeply disappointed by the info, and the lack of everyday application.
I do like that there is a glossary of the questions in the front so you immediately know where to skip.
From questions about prickly pear cactus and more, this book covers a lot of corners, and it explains things very well- breaking down the GI book stigma.

I'm diabetic and struggling to get my blood sugar under control so I was thrilled to see this book with its handy list of 750 foods. The list shows the GI and GL [Glucose Level] counts plus the carb count for a given quantity of each food. In trade paperback, it is light and easy to carry around. My only complaint is that the explanations can be a little hard to understand [okay, I don't understand some of them at all]. I like the idea of moderate levels of carbohydrate in my diet and that's what this book recommends. I've done the low carb route and lost weight but can't stick to it forever. For one thing, it just doesn't feel healthy to me.

Little here........2005-09-23
If you're a somewhat experienced investor, don't waste your money. While Gardner has an involving speaking presentation, there isn't much here beyond some superficial financial planning and investing advice, with a little history of the dot com bubble burst and some mea culpa on the Fool's business foibles. One major investing theme in the book seems to be index funds. He repeats over and over that 90% of managed funds do not beat the S&P index. While that may be true, don't tell Bill Miller, Wally Weitz, Will Danhoff, Ron Muhlenkamp, Bruce Berkowitz..... Of course, he also fails to mention that many funds do not invest in anything remotely associated with this large company index, so it's not fair to compare. Gold funds, small cap funds, international funds, sector funds..... While the average person would be better off following this advice in lieu of uninformed, uneducated investing, it's really a lazy investor philosophy. Not to mention that while repeating over and over that the only mutual fund you need is an index fund, the Motley Fool has begun a newsletter called 'Champion Funds'- makes one think they're OK with managed funds, as long as they can get paid to tout them.....
Inexperienced But Some Gold Nuggets.......2003-09-05
Although the Motley Fools have shown their inexperience, like some of us knew they would, they have also started maturing. Much of their advice is generic enough to be good and hardly any of their advice is "bad" (like much of their competition). Also, there are some gold nuggets later in the program, so it is worth a listen if you are at any transition points in your life.
One thing NOT to do with your money now: Buy this book.........2003-08-04
After owning a couple of the previous works from the Motley Fool (and subsequently throwing them out because the advice is pretty bad) I took a look at the latest edition by borrowing it from someone.
First of all I've always found their advice frustrating. On one hand they kind of half-heartedly recommend passive index investing and then they go about telling you about the latest stock-screening get-rich-quick fad. Toss in a couple dubious stock picks along the way and you have nothing but a mixed message.
I think this book is a pretty shallow attempt for these two to make up for the really bad advice they gave in their other books over the years. They take several chapters explaining away (in hindsight) how wrong they were, but even in this light they fail to embrace proven strategies and instead go about telling you what stocks to own (Starbucks anyone??). Basically this book is trying to convince you that "This time it's different." They are now trying to mend their ways and show that now their advice is worth listening to and all the stuff they said before was wrong and they're very sorry you lost so much of your money using their strategies. And oh, by the way, we still offer for sale this nifty stock investment newsletter and website for a really great price!
I really think the best approach is to concentrate your portfolio on passive index funds compromising various asset classes (domestic, foreign, bonds, real estate) and just rebalancing once a year. This is a very proven strategy that will beat virtually every actively managed portfolio/fund with far less stress (and taxes). Most major pension funds follow an indexing approach for a good reason: It works.
For a much better read try out The Coffeehouse Investor, books by Larry Swedroe, Bogle, and William Bernstein. Send these two jesters back to the circus...
I've had enough!.......2003-03-27
I didn't want to go to a one because some of it was useful. Their admission on how poorly they performed in the market downturn says it all. So now they're saying, along with countless others, "We have the best hindsight of anybody!", rings absolutely hollow. Very bland humor too.
If you've read or heard them before, there's no need for this one. Try to find somebody who has beaten these bad times.
Where's the Beef.......2003-03-03
I listened to the first tape of this two tape series. I could not beleive what I was hearing. A Harley biker who lost his shirt in the downturn was given the advise that he should have stuck to what he knew: invest in Harley-Davidson stock. Great 20-20 hindsight! I kept listening through the end of the first tape, and could not take any more. Incredible nonsense. With their advise and $... you can buy a capucino.

Yes, I'm glad Mrs. Arthur has at least attempted to explain Lutheran worship practices. Explaining/catechesis is an important aspect of our witness. However, I regret that Mrs. Arthur left out the key aspect of Lutheran worship -- that worship is primarily about what God does in forgiving, strengthening, and creating new life. Her opening words are "Worship is WHAT WE DO any time that we are praising God." Obviously our praise of God is an important part of our life of faith, but it is a response to what God does first. Another Lutheran hymnal (Lutheran Worship) spells this out very clearly: "Our Lord speaks and we listen. His Word bestows what it says. Faith that is born from what is heard acknowledges the gifts received with eager thankfulness and praise." Reducing worship to what we do turns the liturgy into yet another 'work'. Plus, the section on the Bible regrettably makes no mention of the Lutheran position that the Bible does more than simply contain the message that God loves us; the Bible IS the very Word of God. There is much that is helpful in Mrs. Arthur's book, but unfortunately misses the genius of Lutheran/Biblical worship.
What a great book!.......2000-08-18
This is such a great book! It is simple enough for small children,but informative enough for adults wanting to learn more about the Lutheran worship service. Lots of colorful pictures and large print text that hits all the basics of Lutheran worship. I took this book to my church and donated it to our church library. So that anyone who is new to our church will have a better understanding of the worship service.
