Book Description
This book is a multifaceted approach to understanding the central developments in African American history since 1939. It combines a historical overview of key personalities and movements with essays by leading scholars on specific facets of the African American experience, a chronology of events, and a guide to further study.
Marian Anderson's famous 1939 concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial was a watershed moment in the struggle for racial justice. Beginning with this event, the editors chart the historical efforts of African Americans to address racism and inequality. They explore the rise of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements and the national and international contexts that shaped their ideologies and methods; consider how changes in immigration patterns have complicated the conventional "black/white" dichotomy in U.S. society; discuss the often uneasy coexistence between a growing African American middle class and a persistent and sizable underclass; and address the complexity of the contemporary African American experience. Contributors consider specific issues in African American life, including the effects of the postindustrial economy and the influence of music, military service, sports, literature, culture, business, and the politics of self-designation, e.g.,"Colored" vs. "Negro," "Black" vs. "African American".
While emphasizing political and social developments, this volume also illuminates important economic, military, and cultural themes. An invaluable resource, The Columbia Guide to African American History Since 1939 provides a thorough understanding of a crucial historical period.

Belongs on every library shelf.......2006-07-24
This book explores the central developments in African American history since 1939.
The first part (about 90 pages) provides a concise and compelling historical narrative broken into five time periods. It begins with a discussion of the various approaches to interpreting black history post-1939, including revisionist, vindicationist, Afrocentric, integrationist, nationalist and multidimensional approaches. The authors take a multidimensional approach, demonstrating that "The Movement" was/is not a united front, but rather a struggle waged on many different fronts in different ways with different objectives - sometimes at cross purposes. Also, things which seemed like progress at the time (e.g. school desegregation) are now being reexamined.
The second part examines seven "key themes" including business, music, military service, sports, and literature, plus the answer to a question which has cropped up numerous times on my listservs lately: why and when did we become Negro/black/African American, who prefers which term, and why is self-designation important?
The third part provides a chronology, the fourth A-Z entries with a paragraph or two about key persons and organizations.
The final section (about 70 pages) is a substantial Resource Guide to textbooks, general references, military records, manuscript collections, film, video and recordings, and more. The various bibliographies are annotated, but the listings of Libraries/Museums/Historical Sites, Newspapers/Periodicals/Journals, and Web Sites are not, and that's the only weakness I found here. (Note: I have an extensive annotated listing of libraries/museums/historical sites by state at AfroAmericanHeritage dot com.)
This book belongs on every library shelf - public, academic and high school. For general readers, it provides a clear and compelling introduction to a complex era. For students and instructors, it provides a valuable framework and many tools for further exploration and research. I'm sure it will spark many people to dig deeper and for that, I highly recommend it.
Book Description
This brief version of the comprehensive edition of WESTERN CIVILIZATION retains all of the best-selling features of the larger book in a condensed format. Three versions are available: Comprehensive (Chapters 1-29), Volume I: To 1715 (Chapters 1-15), and Volume II: Since 1500 (Chapters 13-29).

this is a good introductory book for western civilization. if u r new to the field of western civilization, then read this book before any more advanced or complicated books...
Western Civilization: A Brief History.......2000-06-15
I used Spielvogel's _Western Civilization: A Brief History_ when teaching a Humanities I course. _A Brief History_ is a shorter, paperback adaptation of Spielvogel's longer _Western Civilization_. Of the Western Civ texts I've used before (including the longer version of Spielvogel, I thought _A Brief History_ was the most successful. Spielvogel did a good job of choosing the most important historical events and cultural developments to include in his shorter version, at least those most likely to be included in a Western Civ course. Important information is clear both from subheadings and from the text itself, and short samples of primary texts that give students a taste of the past are included. Students also seemed to enjoy reading the _Brief History_ more other Western Civ texts I've taught. Women's history is well-represented. Only caveat: Because the text is a shorter version, not much of Asian, African, or Indian history is included.
Book Description
This brief, best-selling Western civilization text has helped thousands of students learn about the world they live in by exploring the story of its past. Jack Spielvogel's engaging, chronological narrative weaves the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, and military aspects of history into a gripping story that is as memorable as it is instructive. Each chapter offers a substantial introduction and conclusion that sparks students' imaginations by giving them a context within which to understand these disparate themes. And while the single-author narrative makes it easy for students to follow the story of Western civilization, Spielvogel has included dozens of maps and primary sources--including official documents, poems, and songs--that enliven the past while introducing students to the challenges involved in interpreting history. This edition includes substantial new material on world history to show students the impact of other parts of the world on Western civilization and is now the BRIEFEST of the leading brief Western civilization texts. Available in the following split options: WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY, Third Edition (Chapters 1-29), ISBN: 0-534-62721-8; WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY, Volume I: To 1715, Third Edition (Chapters 1-16), ISBN: 0-534-62722-6; WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY, Volume II: Since 1500, Third Edition (Chapters 13-29), ISBN: 0-534-62723-4.

Great History Book.......2007-06-09
A Brief History of Western Civilization is a great history book. It not only gives the facts but delves into what was happening in the background of history. The layout is easy to follow and the book includes some great maps, charts, pictures, etc.
The only reason this book isn't getting 5 stars is because it's too big, heavy but flimsy which makes it difficult to take care of, especially lugging back and forth in a book bag.

The description of this book was horrible. I thought I was ordering the actual textbook and instead received the workbook. Also, it wasn't even the workbook to the textbook that had been described on the site.

Liked Vol. I better.......2006-12-27
I thought Vol. I was much easier to follow. Vol. II jumped from one event to another and not necessarily in order. For example, one paragraph talks about Hitler committing suicide; two paragraphs later the Holocaust is discussed. I found it hard to read.

Book Description
Why, at a time we're better off materially and live longer than any generation in history, are depression and stress reaching epidemic rates? As Dr. Gregg Jacobs argues, emerging scientific research suggests our emotional well-being is suffering due to our overreliance on the Thinking Mindthe rational, verbal, self-conscious part of ourselves. In the course of history we have gradually become severed from a deeper, older part of our humanity. Dr. Jacobs offers a practical program for re-engaging with this indelible part of our being, explaining how to access life-enhancing positive emotions while minimizing negative ones; connect with a more intuitive intelligence and foster a deeper, expanded sense of daily awareness; and achieve a more integrated concept of self through a closer harmony of intellect and emotion.

Grounded in Science.......2004-12-31
Gregg Jacobs is a Boston-based PhD Psychologist who worked extensively with Herbert Benson and has developed into one of the country's leading experts on sleeping disorders. As a graduate student he participated in extensive studies on the relaxation response, the effects of meditation, and sensory deprivation. His new book espouses a theory that human beings literally have two "minds" -- the "thinking mind" (author of our inner dialogue) grounded primarily in the neo-cortex, and the "ancestral mind," grounded primarily in the "reptilian" and "mammalian" portions of our brains. The author theorizes that the ancestral mind was instrumental in our evolutionary development as humans, and that it has been subsumed, especially since the development of language and writing, by our thinking mind.
The author also explains the health issues related to the dominance of the thinking mind. Briefly oversimplified, reactions like the "fight or flight" response emanate from our ancestral mind, and were useful when danger was immediate and physical and required an immediate action response. Today, when the "threats" facing us are more likely to be financial than physical, more likely to involve traffic jams and demanding supervisors and computers and other machinery that breaks down, the "fight or flight" response is not easily discharged through action, as it once had been. The result, in combination with the inner dialogue of the thinking mind, turns fear of the immediate into generalized anxiety and helps to generate mental health issues like phobias and depression.
What I appreciated about this book, more than anything else, is it's foundation in proper science. While the book helps to explain the efficacy of some new age practices, it does so from an empirical perspective. For tackling such a complex issue, the book is written in a clear and straight-forward manner. It also provides a number of practical suggestions for connecting with the ancestral mind that readers may find helpful.
Interesting, but not completely convincing.......2004-05-20
Good ground based theory, but lapsed in some parts of the book. Which made me asked the question whether if one was completely connected the primitive, and childlike Ancestral Mind, could one be easy manipulated, or confused by naivety. Considering the Thinking Mind (according to the books theory) is based in forethought, and forward planning. The author Gregg D Jacobs does say throughout the book that there needs to be a balance with both minds - The Thinking Mind and the Ancestral Mind. Although the basis of the book is the tyranny of the thinking mind; and how it keeps us hyper stressed and unhappy. Using a strong term like Tyranny to describe our dominating Thinking Mind doesn't hold much hope we can live in harmony. Do I have to keep thinking that at any moment a tyrannous thinking mind will overtake my thinking again?
I am interested in the dangers of depending on too much of a primitive mental state, in regards to modern life. If one was to fall into a mental out look within the Ancestral Mind, could that be dangerous? Although it is pointed out in the book, that Ancestral Mind is capable of detecting threat, but threats can be more allusive and adaptive. Yes, early threats in Ancestral life were more blatant, eg the snake in the grass, noises in the forest. But as opposed to modern life, and mental adaptation, evolution - threats change.
Chapters on stress and anger management are applicable, but The Ancestral Mind does not convince me that in religious and spiritual states of mind one is at peace - as the end chapters point out. Consider the oppression and wars, that religions and
religious countries/people have committed.
All and all it's a good attempt at brain science, and evolutionary psychology, as far as a written self-help guide. But not totally convincing. I think its important to investigate mental states that lead to actions, whether we can simply slice the brain in two and call one side Tyrannous.
The book loses a point, for mentioning how people would rather watch the Sopranos than look at the stars. Sorry the Sopranos are one of my favourite television shows.
Know Thyself Better.......2003-10-06
Gregg Jacobs has written a book that really gets to the meat of the issue of how do we find meaning and happiness in our lives. This is the perfect blend of psychology and the science of evolution. Why are our brains hardwired they way they are? Jacob's has some of the answers. I like the fact that he includes some cognitive psychology with evolutionary reasons why we feel and act as we do. The main premise is that our ancestors developed their minds and emotional lives far differently than we do today because they were not burdened by the internal monologue of modern man, which is caused by depending on a verbal form of communication and reasoning which follows from the use of language as a form of communication.
But there is hope for modern man he can learn to connect with the emotions and feelings that our early ancestors used to interact in their social settings, and if we use some of their methods we too can expand our understanding and interaction with ourselves and fellow beings. The result being a further connection to our environment and others in our lives, and ultimately a better life with meaning, purpose and fulfillment. A large order but much of the information give by Jacob's can help one see why they have problems connecting and freeing their minds of the seemingly endless burdens and fears of modern life.
Wonderful advice for Americans.......2003-07-15
Since my wife and her family are Samoans, I've benefitted from their more natural, less technological cadence, a rhythm highly recommended by the author, who suggests that contemporary industrial man lives too much in the wordy, cerebral mind and too little in the emotional mid-brain that we share with other mammals. The book provides a wealth of practical exercises that help us tune out our constant analytical self-chatter and attune ourselves to simpler and emotionally wiser ways.
He also describes the many health benefits of religious faith, available to believers. But there's the rub for many, because the Judeo-Christian scriptures that so many find comfort in have been so deconstructed by textual analysis as to render them too little believable in too many ways for too many people of intelligence, education and rational ability. But the author doesn't denigrate religion, and is honest in admitting that while it works well for many it doesn't for many others. I gave the book four stars rather than five because the author doesn't adequately resolve the issue of credibility of traditional religions in a scientific age.

Book Description
Indoor air quality has gained more and more attention in recent years. The book covers organic pollutants in indoor air, their sources, measurement, and evaluation. It is written from a chemical-analytical point of view. Therefore it fills a gap in the literature on this very topical subject.
The book is divided into four parts covering the measurement of organic pollutants, environmental test chambers, the release of organic compounds from indoor materials as well as investigation concepts and quality guidelines. Each section was written by an experienced expert. The authors work in Europe, the USA, and Australia. The book is adressed to chemists, physicists, biologists, and medical doctors at universities and research facilities, in industry and environmental laboratories as well as regulative bodies.

Description:
This study investigated the formation of secondary pollutants resulting from household product use in the presence of ozone. Experiments were conducted in a 50-m^3 chamber simulating a residential room. The chamber was operated at conditions relevant to US residences in polluted areas during warm-weather seasons: an air exchange rate of 1.0h^-^1 and an inlet ozone concentration of approximately 120ppb, when included. Three products were used in separate experiments. An orange oil-based degreaser and a pine oil-based general-purpose cleaner were used for surface cleaning applications. A plug-in scented-oil air freshener (AFR) was operated for several days. Cleaning products were applied realistically with quantities scaled to simulate residential use rates. Concentrations of organic gases and secondary organic aerosol from the terpene-containing consumer products were measured with and without ozone introduction. In the absence of reactive chemicals, the chamber ozone level was approximately 60ppb. Ozone was substantially consumed following cleaning product use, mainly by homogeneous reaction. For the AFR, ozone consumption was weaker and heterogeneous reaction with sorbed AFR-constituent VOCs was of similar magnitude to homogeneous reaction with continuously emitted constituents. Formaldehyde generation resulted from product use with ozone present, increasing indoor levels by the order of 10ppb. Cleaning product use in the presence of ozone generated substantial fine particle concentrations (more than 100@mgm^-^3) in some experiments. Ozone consumption and elevated hydroxyl radical concentrations persisted for 10-12h following brief cleaning events, indicating that secondary pollutant production can persist for extended periods.

Description:
We present experimental data and semi-empirical models describing the sorption of organic gases in a simulated indoor residential environment. Two replicate experiments were conducted with 20 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a 50-m^3 room finished with painted wallboard, carpet and cushion, draperies and furnishings. The VOCs span a wide volatility range and include ten hazardous air pollutants. VOCs were introduced to the static chamber as a pulse and their gas-phase concentrations were measured during a net adsorption period and a subsequent net desorption period. Three sorption models were fit to the measured concentrations for each compound to determine the simplest formulation needed to adequately describe the observed behavior. Sorption parameter values were determined by fitting the models to adsorption period data then checked by comparing measured and predicted behavior during desorption. The adequacy of each model was evaluated using a goodness of fit parameter calculated for each period. Results indicate that sorption usually does not greatly affect indoor concentrations of methyl-tert-butyl ether, 2-butanone, isoprene and benzene. In contrast, sorption appears to be a relevant indoor process for many of the VOCs studied, including C"8-C"1"0 aromatic hydrocarbons (HC), terpenes, and pyridine. These compounds sorbed at rates close to typical residential air change rates and exhibited substantial sorptive partitioning at equilibrium. Polycyclic aromatic HCs, aromatic alcohols, ethenylpyridine and nicotine initially adsorbed to surfaces at rates of 1.5->6h^-^1 and partitioned 95->99% in the sorbed phase at equilibrium.
