Book Description

Few historical epochs have influenced the development of civilization to the extent that those of ancient Greece and Rome have. This Guide, with over 1700 entries and 500 illustrations, is a key reference work on both, covering all the main branches of ancient literature, art and institutions. In addition, it explores traditionally neglected areas such as dress, housing, minority groups and social relations. Ranging from post-Bronze Age Greece to the later Roman Empire, it surveys not only ancient Greece and Rome, but discusses those cultures with which Greeks and Romans exchanged information and culture (e.g., Phoenicians, Celts and Jews) as well as the remote peoples with whom they were in contact (e.g., Persia, China and India). Graham Shipley is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and chair of the Council of University Classical Departments as well as the Sparta and Laconia Committee of the British School of Athens. His publications include A History of Samos and The Greek World after Alexander. John Vanderspoel is Professor of Late Antiquity at the University of Calgary, where he was initially appointed in 1985. His publications include Themistius and the Imperial Court (1995) and numerous journal articles and chapters on Roman history, intellectual and religious developments in the Roman imperial period and Roman Britain. David Mattingly is a Fellow of the British Academy and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. His publications include monographs on Tripolitania (1995) and An Atlas of Roman Britain (2002); edited volumes including Economies beyond Agriculture in the Classical World (2001), Life, Death and Entertainment in the Roman World (1999), and Dialogues in Roman Imperialism (supplement to Journal of Roman Archaeology, 1997). Lin Foxhall is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Her publications include co-edited volumes on masculinity in the ancient world (Thinking Men and When Men were Men 1998), on ancient law (Greek Law in its Political Setting 1996), and the ancient economy (Money, Labour and Land 2002) as well as many journal articles and chapters on Greek social relations, gender, agriculture, field survey and economy.

4 out of 5 stars Not as substantial as the OCD.......2007-01-17

Inevitably this new reference work from Cambridge invites comparison with the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Indeed, the editors themselves acknowledge their debt to the OCD and publish a list of headwords contained in the CDCC but not the OCD. This list clearly shows that their emphasis is much more on what might be called social history: entries, for example, on shoes, shopping, singers, and soap. Of course, the book also offers coverage of places and people, but OCD definitely has the edge in this respect, with many more entries on minor figures and much fuller coverage of some (not all) of the major ones: eleven columns on Vergil, for example, versus CDCC's two.

The debt to OCD is in places a bit too plain. Compare these two passages in the articles on mime: "Mime actresses like Arbuscula and Dionysia won wealth and notoriety" (OCD); "Female performers like Dionysia and Arbuscula achieved both notoriety and great wealth" (CDCC).

Another avowed aim of the editors was to make the work "accessible". Does this mean dumbed-down? To some extent, yes -- for example, Latin and Greek are not much used, and the writing style at times borders on the chatty: "Walking through an ancient Greek town or village, we would not recognize the gardens." Compare OCD's introduction to the same topic: "Two strands of landscape management coalesce in ancient Mediterranean garden culture".

Part of making a reference book more approachable is to illustrate it. Fortunately, the illustrations here have, with a few exceptions, been carefully chosen and do provide useful information or insight rather than simply ornamenting the text. All are in black and white; there are photographs, but the majority are line drawings. There are also maps and tables. One might question whether too much space has been given to such matter at the expense of text: for instance, almost two full pages showing the different styles of amphorae.

Some articles dealing with modern approaches to the classical world -- for example, "Marxism" -- are of questionable value in a book that most will turn to for information about the classical world itself. (To be fair, OCD also has an article under this head.) "Comic strips" deals with modern-day comics and graphic novels. As much as I enjoy Asterix (who also gets an entry of his own), I didn't expect to find him in these pages. And why on earth is there an article on "Imperialism, modern", in which no attempt is even made to link the topic to the ancient world? This seems nothing if not an editorial blunder.

Speaking of editing, the text is pretty clean, but apparently the copy editors were unaware of the concept of the dangling participle. They also seem to think that declarative sentences are more effective when ended with exclamation points. One expects better from Cambridge.

For now, CDCC is probably the better choice for a school library, but I don't see it replacing OCD on the shelves of scholars, though it is certainly a useful complement with its generally fuller coverage of everyday life. If it ever sees a second edition with a tighter focus, I imagine it will belong in the first rank of references for the ancient world.

    Book Description

The Cold War contains a selection of official and unofficial documents which provide a truly multi-faceted account of the entire Cold War era. This volume presents the different kinds of materials necessary to understand what the Cold War was about, how it was fought, and the ways in which it affected the lives of people around the globe. By depicting the experiences of East Berlin housewives and South African students, as well as those of political leaders from Europe and the Third World, The Cold War emphasizes the variety of ways in which the Cold War conflict was experienced. The significance of these differences is essential to understanding the Cold War: it demonstrates how the causes of the clash may have looked very different in Santiago from the way they looked in Seoul, New York, Moscow, or Beijing. The book examines the entirety of the Cold War era, presenting documents from the end of World War II right up to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A final selection of source material goes on to illustrate the impact of the Cold War to the present day. Again, the emphasis is global: there are documents on the aftermath of the Cold War in Africa and Europe, as well as on the links between the Cold War and the dramatic events of 11 September 2001. By providing a truly international glimpse of the Cold War and its various actors and subjects, The Cold War helps cut through the often simplistic notions of the recent past and allows the reader to explore the truly global impact of the East-West confrontation that dominated international relations in the second half of the twentieth century.

      Book Description

The cold war--the bitter standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union--lasted for over 50 years and polarized the world. The conflict had its roots in political and ideological disagreements dating back to the Russian Revolution of 1917--disagreements that intensified in the wake of World War II. Allan M. Winkler excerpts speeches by Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to demonstrate the growing abyss between the two political systems. President Harry S. Truman's announcement of the existence of a Soviet atomic bomb and his speech to Congress launching the Truman Doctrine testify to the gravity of the situation. The cold war was not always "cold"--armed conflicts were narrowly avoided in the Cuban missile crisis and the Bay of Pigs, and war did erupt in Korea and Vietnam. The complex politics of the Vietnam War are represented by voices as divergent as Vietnamese nationalist Ho Chi Minh, President Lyndon B. Johnson, antiwar protesters, and a participant in the My Lai massacre. Cold war paranoia permeated American society. The investigations of writer Ring Lardner, Jr., and government official Alger Hiss by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, along with speeches by Senator Joe McCarthy, lay bare the political repression at home generated by the perceived communist threat. Excerpts from Arthur Miller's play The Crucible and the film script of High Noon capture the mood of uncertainty and fear. A picture essay entitled "The Atom Unleashed" collects photographs and cartoons to explore one of the most controversial discoveries of the 20th century. Agreements made in the SALT treaties show the cold war finally coming to an end. In his 1992 State of the Union address, President Bush declared, "By the grace of God, America won the cold war."

                    Book Description

Covering 250 years of design tools and technologies, Tools of the Imagination: Drawing Tools and Technologies from the Eighteenth Century to the Present takes a revealing look at how architects have produced the drawings, models, renderings, and, now, animations that show us the promise of what might be built. The book includes a wide array of these tools as well as drawings, renderings, and sketches from well-known architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and I. M. Pei. Along with the beautiful historical objects, the National Building Museum has collected wooden models by Frank Gehry and hand-drawn sketches by Tod Williams, showing that the tools of the imagination are still very much a part of architectural design.

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview of the technologies, but a little hard to read.......2007-07-12

Bought this book as a gift for my dad who has been a plumbing engineer for almost 30 years. As he flipped through the pages, he kept saying "oh, I remember this tool!" or "look at this, I haven't seen one of these in ages!" The book was well received and a definite must for all those engineering and drafting types because it gives them a chance to see how the technology has progressed.

As someone else mentioned in their review, the book looks nice, but the white on silver and silver on white isn't exactly practical. Can be very hard to read, especially with a glare on the page.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Draftperson's Romance Book.......2007-03-29

From March 5 through October 10, 2005, the National Building Museum presented an exhibition entitled "Tools of the Imagination". The exhibition contained countless drafting tools and consequentially created documents whose days have since past.

In essence, this exhibition and accompanying book document the romance between a creator (i.e. architect) and their tools to generate their subsequent creations.

"Tools of Imagination" reads as a romance novel for any architect, designer or drafter who once either used or knew of these antiquated tools. Beautiful pictures of pocket cased sets (composed of rulers, compasses, and ink sets) contrast sharply against VIZ-generated renderings and Gehry's CATIA-sculpted buildings between the covers. The contrast lends itself to document the development and refinement of the tool while also documenting the evolution of the architect's method of designing.

While the preface and the introduction to "Tools of Imagination" succeed in relegating the subject of the book about the intrigue and history of the 'tool', a further consideration may have been given to the question of representation within architecture as put forth by John Beckmann's "Virtual Dimension: Architecture, Representation, and Crash Culture" (collection) and Robin Evan's "Translations from Drawing to Building and Other Essays".

By not tapping into this discussion of the relevance of the tool to the mode of representation, "Tools of the Imagination" situates itself as a well-done exhibition publication without furthering to the discussion of how modes of representation may be observed.Tools of the Imagination: Drawing Tools and Technologies from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

Very good overview of the subject and very well illustrated. But the printed text, silver on a white page and the reverse, is very nearly illegible. You may go blind trying to read it.

That said, if you collect drawing instruments, you got to have it.

In the 16th century, European "natural philosophers" introduced a wide variety of scientific instruments, among them clocks, magnets, and compasses. Braving the risk of being accused of witchcraft, they helped change the face of science.

"Instruments have a life of their own," write historians of science Thomas Hankins and Robert Silverman in this engaging study. "They do not merely follow theory; often they determine theory, because instruments determine what is possible, and what is possible determines to a large extent what can be thought." The "natural magic" of inventors such as Father Francis Linus and Athanasius Kircher introduced their contemporaries to the notion that with the proper tools nearly any advance in science was possible. And those who came after them made great advances indeed, from the 18th-century Aeolian harp, from which came the belief that light could be bent to produce sound, to automated weather stations, telestereoscopes, and early phonographs. Many of those inventions, Hankins and Silverman note, anticipated the technological advances that mark our own time, which seems itself to be full of natural magic. --Gregory McNamee

                      Book Description

Thomas Hankins and Robert Silverman investigate an array of instruments from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century that seem at first to be marginal to science--magnetic clocks that were said to operate by the movements of sunflower seeds, magic lanterns, ocular harpsichords (machines that played different colored lights in harmonious mixtures), Aeolian harps (a form of wind chime), and other instruments of "natural magic" designed to produce wondrous effects. By looking at these and the first recording instruments, the stereoscope, and speaking machines, the authors show that "scientific instruments" first made their appearance as devices used to evoke wonder in the beholder, as in works of magic and the theater.

The authors also demonstrate that these instruments, even though they were often "tricks," were seen by their inventors as more than trickery. In the view of Athanasius Kircher, for instance, the sunflower clock was not merely a hoax, but an effort to demonstrate, however fraudulently, his truly held belief that the ability of a flower to follow the sun was due to the same cosmic magnetic influence as that which moved the planets and caused the rotation of the earth. The marvels revealed in this work raise and answer questions about the connections between natural science and natural magic, the meaning of demonstration, the role of language and the senses in science, and the connections among art, music, literature, and natural science.

Using mildly contemporary sounds and colorful pianistic effects, each song in this book is a vibrant sound picture that students will enjoy bringing to life in performance. While the pieces may be enjoyed simply for their poetic and music content, they are crafted in ways that help developing students master the musical and technical concepts needed to play standard impressionist and contemporary literature. This late-elementary level book features basic 5-finger patterns, easy rhythmic patterns (including 8th notes), and simple pedal use. 7 solos: Blues for a Count * Fanfare * Fiesta March * Mountain Sunrise * October's Farewell * Sand Swirls * Whoosh!.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for introductory environmental psych.........2000-10-08

This is an introductory book on `Environmental Psychology'.... which features more than a normal person can imagine ..... it is NOT a book related to common sociological issues on global warming, nuclear waste disposal, environmental strikes and demonstration etc...., This book is related to psychology and features on content related to the environment and the behaviour of people. It is explained in psychological perspectives and is suitable for readers with a basic depth in understanding terminology related to psychology. There are theories on relationship between environmental and behaviour, environmental perception (such as Gestalt psych etc.,) Additionally descriptions on extraneous factors of noise, temperature, barometric pressure and attitude, wind, heat and cold, physical built structures (clusters etc.,), on behaviour.

Furthermore, there are chapters on disasters, Toxic Hazards and pollutions, and most interesting of all, the concepts of personal space and territorial behaviour, high density and crowding .....the effects of life in urban city in contrast to rural outback areas....theories on Architecture, Design and Engineering for Human Behaviour. Additionally topics on `design in residential and institutional environments', `work, learning and leisure environments', and the psychology perspective to changing people's behaviour towards saving the environment etc.,,

This book is worth every penny of it.....it is worth keeping it as a resource material !

New social structures, agencies, and social movements have had a dramatic impact on community development across the world. In this book, more than forty authors in six countries representing the major regions of the world offer a truly global perspective on the changing nature of the practice and theory of community development.

The collection approaches community development from many different angles, featuring a critical review of the international literature, twenty detailed case studies dealing with key issues, and separate country-by-country studies of education, research, and theory. Despite obvious differences between countries in their economic, political, and socio-cultural contexts of practice, common themes emerge. The book concludes with a new framework theory for use in policy development, program planning, and alternative practice.

Comprehensive and challenging Community Development Around the World is essential reading for students, analysts, and practitioners in the field.

From the supplier: The Texas Learning Technology Group (TLTG) offers its Environmental Science Series as a means for teachers to educate their students on the dynamic nature of ecosystems. Rather than simply delivering information, the program aims to help students make the connection between the information and their everyday lives. Real-world scenarios are used in a multimedia environment to provide students with the ability to hone their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Four units, each of which consists of ten hours of instruction, comprise the series. The modules include EcoExpert: Fuel Site Quandary, EcoExpert: Case of the Polluted Playground, Health Risk: Incident at Elk Run and Health Risk: Shadow Over Crystal Valley. Students report that they find themselves more interested in environmental issues after taking the course.

From the author: Distance learning has been found to be effective for continuing public health training. The authors undertook a six-week pilot to teach skills in outbreak investigation through the combination of a self-instructional, interactive, computer-based case study and online discussions led by two instructors. Participants were public health practitioners with knowledge of basic epidemiology and public health. Eighteen public health practitioners participated. Overall, participants posted 113 messages to the online discussions, with a median of 5.5 messages per participant (range: 0-16). The number of postings was higher for participants who had taken part in an outbreak investigation before the pilot test than for those who had not. In general, participants enjoyed the experience and believed that the online discussions added value to the self-instructional case study. The authors conclude that the combination of the case study and the online discussions was a positive learning experience. They encourage others to consider this format for training.
