Norman Polmar and Thomas Allen describe espionage as the world's second-oldest profession, right behind prostitution. They say the two trades share much of the same allure: "Money, secrecy, sex, great public interest, and people's reputations--or lack thereof--are involved in both professions." Spies are probably the objects of greater curiosity, given their proximity to the corridors of power. And now Polmar and Allen have come up with a compendium that informs on the informers, from "A-2" (the intelligence staff of the U.S. Army Air Corps) to "Zelle, Margaretha" (Mata Hari's real name). More than 2,000 entries deliver the scoop on agencies, operations, jargon, technology, and even such fictional figures as James Bond.

Politically correct history.......2003-02-19
This book was written with the cooperation of the establishment. As a result it is somewhat biased. For instance we are not told in the article about Angelton that he was kicked out for being a failure at his job. During the last 10 years of his career, every Soviet defector that he claimed was genuine was a Soviet plant. Every one he claimed was a plant was genuine. After he was fired his safe was cut open and found to contain many year old evidence that he did not act on but when followed up was used to catch several Soviet spies.
The article on Agee, who was a despicable person, falsely claims that he was the one who first revealed the identity of the Athens CIA head of station. Several heads of station had lived in the same house. Every taxi driver knew the identity. The house was the worst possible choice for a CIA person to live in. It was at the end of a dead end street and was so secluded that any illegal activities such as kidnapping or murder would go un-witnessed by others.
The author gives misleading information to the effect that once the contents of a classified photo appear in some other public photo the classified photo should be declassified. This would allow the method of taking the photo to be deduced and future photos of equipment using that method would be blocked.
Encyclopedia IS the proper title.......2002-10-29
A book of information of people, places, code names, etc. relating to spying, including very early items with descriptions and history. A query once found, leads to cross references and provokes further reading in this book, and into other books. Names well known people and their contribution to spying, and the contribution of private citizens also. Each item is well written and full of unexpected, details, history, and information. Presents code names and describes the activity for which the code was used. Very useful for anyone interested in spies and spying preceeding war time, in war time, and in peace time also.
Book Review: Spy Book Encyc........2000-04-17
An amusing read by this outsider observer of the community. I showed this book to an ex-member of the community and they "asked the right question." "Does it define the Intelligence Cycle?"
The one major short coming (4.5 stars) is that it could have said more about the role of Canada and the CSE and their other units. These have had documentation and this is one of those areas where the Web excells.
The Best Spy Book Ever.......1999-08-29
I had checked it out in a library and I couldn't put it down. I think it is the best spy book ever, but don't take my word for it, check it out.
Could Have Beenn Better With More Facts........1999-04-08
I cannot believe two Military historians wrote a reference book leaving out importnat birthdates, places and regions where most of the spys they cited grew up. For example, Claire George an outstanding American was cited, but no birthdates, hometown, educational background or region he came from was even listed, yet they claim they are historians. I know they may try to defend their poor research by saying spies hide their backgrounds but most of this information is readily available from easy sources. Consequently, I question the accuracy, research and details of a book that could have been great, but is only good for as a children's guide to Espionage from ages 10 through 14. Sorry, I expected more and want a discount for what I paid.

Spies and Espionage, a Directory is a thrilling account of legendary spies throughout history, including Allan Pinkerton, the "Godfather of Sleuths" and founder of the first detective agency, and Nancy Wake, "The White Mouse," who was Number One on the Gestapo’s Most Wanted List with a price of five-million francs on her head. Encyclopedia Brown is the best!.......1999-12-08
Encyclopedia Brown is a ten-year-old detective, for those of you who don't know that. He solves cases for his police chief dad, as well as the kids around his city. There's also Bugs Meany, the big, tough leader of the Tigers. And Wilford Wiggins, the high school dropout who tries to cheat little kids from their savings. And, of course, Encyclopedia's junior partner, Sally Kimball. She isn't just the prettiest girl in the fifth grade and the best athlete, she can beat up Bugs Meany! By the way, with Encyclopedia on a case, none of these "seemingly cool" older kids (not counting Sally) can ever succeed on even one thing they want to do bad (as in the good, bad type of bad). My opinion on this book is that it's great, but since any Encyclopedia Brown book would be the same to me, all of them are truely terrific.
Encyclopedia Brown - a good detective.......1999-06-07
In "Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Two Spies" there are some brain twisting investigations. And the answers are very elusive. I think that Donald J. Sobol has very good ideas and knows how to make them into mind bendng stories. I think it is a very good book.

Customer Reviews:
LOTS OF SPIES, BUT NOT ALL.......2006-01-29
SPY BOOK, with 2500 entries packed into one big paperback, is an exceptionally handy reference tool, but still far from a complete encyclopedia of espionage. For example, a photo display on page 513 shows Soviet postage stamps honoring the intelligence officers Stanislav Vaupshasov, Rudolf Abel, Konon Molody, Richard Sorge and Ivan Kudrya, plus British agent Kim Philby. If you look for an entry on each of these men, you will find it--except for Kudrya. At the place where he should appear you will see: Kryuchkov, Vladimir... Kuczynski, Dr. Jürgen... Kuczynski, Robert René... Kuczynski, Ursula... Kuehn, Dr. Bernard... Kuklinski, Col. Ryszard... A rather full listing within such a small range of the alphabet, but still no cigar. Turn the page, and you'll discover no listing for Leonid Kvasnikov, head of the Soviet "technical department" (atomic espionage) in the US during WWII--a rather serious omission.
A quick check for other names that come to mind reveals that most are represented, but Dmitry Bystrolyotov, Pavel Fitin, Vera Goutchkoff (Guchkova) and Jan Valtin (Richard Krebs) are missing. Each scholar of espionage who comes to the book will probably add a half dozen names to this list. There is an entry on Vasili Mitrokhin, the KGB archivist who brought thousands of copied documents out to the West in 1992, but no entry for Melita Norwood, the chief British spy he exposed. (Her story broke in 1999; Mitrokin, incidentally, is given the first name "Nikitish," which was his patronymic.) There is an entry on Los Alamos, but no separate entries for the Manhattan Project, Tube Alloys or General Leslie Groves, who was not a spy but did head America's most secret wartime project. Most entries fail to conclude with a citation of the literature on the subject. The bibliography and list of VENONA codenames at the back are fairly random selections, not the last word.
The edition I consulted is the second from 2004, and it is mostly up to date, but some information is hoary. The VENONA project, much studied and publicized after the National Security Agency released its documents to the public in 1995-1996, is represented with a full entry, but many figures involved in it (such as Fitin) are given short shrift. Theodore Hall, exposed in 1996 as the Soviet agent MLAD, receives a suitable entry; but Morris and Leontina Cohen are described only with outdated material from the 1960s (as the Krogers). Anatoly Yatskov, control officer of Lona Cohen when she carried Hall's drawing of the plutonium bomb from Albuquerque to New York, is not described in this role (nor is she), but appears only as Anatoli Yakovlev, the pseudonym he used in the USA, and as the control officer of Harry Gold--information from the time of the Rosenbergs' trial.
Despite such lacks, the book is good to have when you need to grab some basic facts in a hurry, as when in the heat of writing. It appears to be strongest in US intelligence. For example, I found the entry on William Donovan very full and illuminating. There are many interesting photographs and some box-charts of organizational structures, plus lists of CIA and KGB directors, and explanations of tradecraft terms. The layout is attractive and conveys a sense of enthusiasm. All in all, it does a better job than previous spy encyclopedias, and so is well worth having. But too many spies get away.

A coloring book for adults!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-05-12
This would be a perfect gift for a history buff, a teenager, or any adult that secretly loves to color. I study the "queens of the world" for a living-Elizabeth I just happens to be my favorite! I was hooked the minute I opened the book. I had NO idea the dolls, gowns, (a lot of it is costumes for the Elizabeth dolls) horses and characters would be so detailed! It's "brilliant", as the English would say. If you really want to make this a learning experience, I suggest going to your local library and looking at the portraits of Elizabeth I... Then your coloring book will be really authentic! And YES! the costumes ARE truly costumes she really wore. As I stated, I have studied Elizabeth I in depth and I can certainly vouch that the details of the costumes...right down to the jewelry are authentic. You will open this book up and say WOW! Unfortunately, I could only give this book four stars because it is titled "coloring book". I can't imagine getting a fat crayon in between the lines of the extreme details. I think this book requires very good color pencils instead. I own a set of "portrait" colored pencils. They have the colors necessary to really capture the personality of Elizabeth's costumes. If you get this book and have a blooming artist in the family...buy them a good set of colored pencils to go with this. Together they are an everlasting gift.
Details, details!.......2000-12-29
Huzzah! A book that lets the reader get up close and personal with the Queen of England's wardrobe. The pictures are well drawn, large, yet detailed. So many portraits of the time are sort of muddy-colored, it's hard to see the intricate details of QE's fantastic court dresses. This would be a wonderful book for a costumer, your favorite 'rennie', or someone doing research into the period.

Book Description
Paper doll collection spotlights the monarch who led sixteenth-century England to a period of enormous prosperity. The Queen's seven magnificent gowns of silk, satin, and brocade are accented with pleated ruffs, pearls, and polished gemstones. Sir Walter Raleigh and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, two of her admirers, are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth I.......2005-04-16
Tom Tierney has obviously done a good deal of research in preparation for this book. The costumes are well selected and accurately colored and depicted.
I was disappointed on two scores. Firstly, the costumes aren't printed on card (only the doll is). Secondly, I think there should have been at least two dolls showing the queen at different stages of her life.
It's also odd that dolls of Sir Walter Raleigh and the Earl of Essex are included, but Elizabeth's closest friend (and greatest love), Robert Dudley, wasn't.
Nice Paper Doll book of "Elizabeth I".......2002-11-23
It's a pretty paper doll book of the "Queen Elizabeth I" but still I saw other paper doll book who were more beautiful, this one lack of little details but it's still a nice book if you like to know what kind of wardrobe Queen Elizabeth was wearing and if you are interest in "Elizabeth I" like I do you will like it!

Grounding Psychology in Neuroscience.......2002-11-09
Nobelist Gerald Edelman "theory of neuronal group selection" can be taken to provide a neurological understanding for psychoanalytic theory and experience. Because of the dense overlapping of dendrites and
axons in gray matter, a given area of cortex is capable of a varying
array of responses to a given input. Of the many possible responses,
one inevitably leads to the strongest, most adaptive, or rewarding
output. Suppose that this "fittest" response were "selected" for
synaptic changes enhancing the likelihood of future firing of just
that pattern of response when the same or similar input next arrives.
That pattern of function would have "won" in a Darwinian competition
to dominate the activity of that group of neurons when those same or
similar experiential conditions occur again. (I hope the reader can
hear in this a basis for transference experience: the neuronal response previously selected, perhaps by childhood experience, will be reactivated again in the future under specifically evocative conditions.)
We can thus anticipate a direct neurophysiologic account for how
"object relations" may in part derive from internalized__introjected__ experiences with objects and with their functions. Each experience in present real time consists of, is generated by, and resides in the activation of neural groups, interconnected in an ad-hoc network, distributed throughout the brain anatomically, and thus involving many functions of sensation, perception, motor function, emotion and cognition. The specific functioning of that network just then may be in effect "selected" by facilitative synaptic changes; its components might be be predisposed to fire together again under the right conditions.
Reentrant signalling over anatomically complete loops probably allows
anatomically distributed (distant) neuronal groups continuously to
communicate with one another and to synchronize their activities,
according to Edelman. Groups active in one area (eg, visual) can thus
reciprocally excite and cause synaptic enhancement of groups in a
separate area (eg, tactile). Edelman points out that particular
patterns of response in one brain "map" (consisting of many groups)
thus can become functionally associated with particular patterns in
other(s). Responses to present inputs can thus be linked to previous
patterns , across maps. Thus, a sight can stimulate the memory of a
touch. A sound, perhaps a spoken word or melody (obviously lots of unaddressed complexity here) can stimulate and reactivate a visual, operational, or cognitive memory, and, "inscribing" on it in the present, change it.
A mapping of many such selected groups could thus provide the neurophysiologic correlate to and substrate for unconscious object representations, which could potentially, if later reactivated, be expressed as affect-full object-related fantasies, impulses, and behaviors, potentially conscious, yet, perhaps exerting a neurologic influence that could remain unconscious.
A potentially responsive neural network representing past experience
will be activated, Edelman theorizes, if current input is a "good
enough match" to previous input which led to the original synaptic
enhancement. That is, if enough of its neighboring, or synaptically
linked, groups are activated ("the present context"), it will be
activated too. Thus, the present experience is categorized according to previous experience. Thus, presentation of a current object (eg, the
analyst) may activate a sufficient number of groups previously
functionally related in experience of the original object ( eg, a
parent), and thus a "memory", specific feeling state, or a behavioral repetition may arise.
This perhaps provides some neurophysiologic correlate to Charles Spezzano's recent observation that, "the immediate
situation is idiosyncratically and unconsciously put by us into a category of
situations and it is this idiosyncratic and unconscious categorizing that
leads to the feeling we have... Still, the patient may hear us saying that,
while we see them putting the immediate event into a category that leads to
a feeling, we don't understand why it has to be put into that category (don't
understand in the sense that we see how it could just as easily be put into
other unconscious meaning categories and is categorized by the patient in an
idiosyncratic way, maybe one we trace historically..."
How does the daily free-associative process work? The superolateral prefrontal cortex, "connected to a multitude of (remote) sensory association areas and limbic and paralimbic cortex," apparently may address and retrieve representations of memories from many fields distributed in the brain. It has been shown in pet scan studies consistently to be activated in tasks which are not run by external stimuli, ie, it is activated in tasks (eg, "visualize walking down your street and turning left at the corner") requiring organization by the brain itself of itself. (ROland, 1993)
In Edelman's model, the continuous reciprocal communication via reentrant signalling between maps of neural groups activated in current experience and those previously enhanced and synchronized in past experience (eg, with the original objects) allows the two sets reciprocally to "translate" or to "inscribe" their activities upon one another. This furthers our account of the brain activity in free association. The functional interaction between maps may permit continuous rearrangement according to unpredictable variations in the environment, (eg, the analyst's challenging an accustomed assumption, or "destabilizing a compromise formation", with a question, or action.) THus, past and present are recategorized in terms of one another, producing change in neurologic and thus in psychic structure. The present real experience with and of the analyst thus can "insinuate itself" into the prior arrangements ( the prior neuro-psychic structure), necessarily reorganizing the object relations constellation (transmuting internalization).
"We do not simply store images or bits but become more richly endowed with the capacity to categorize in connected ways." (Rosenfeld, 1986) Increasing the number of neural arrangements by which one experience is compared to, contrasted with, and categorized according to prior experience or fantasy allows greater richness and flexibility in functioning, one result of a successful psychoanalysis.

Mike Vanier's experience with Edelman's prose gave the typical bioassay result: its hard to read Edelman's books. I often try to imagine the state of mind of people in 1875 who tried to wade through Darwin's "Origin of Species" or someone who came across the work of Gregor Mendel in the 1890's. Unfortunately for the Science of Mind, Mike is just the kind of person Edelman might have hoped to be able to reach. Well, Mike, did you read right through the Bible (or substitute "Your First Calculus Textbook" for "Bible") the first time you picked it up? There really is a forest in "Neural Darwinism" once you get past the trees.
The claim "his ideas are neither new, nor original, nor correct" is one of the standard put-downs of the academic world. Anyone who works on non-trivial scientific issues and is intelectually honest will admit that his work in based on ideas taken from others and that his work is incomplete and contains errors. Edelman makes these admissions. Edelman's ideas about how brains can learn and function to produce what we experience as minds are positive contributions to science and worth getting to know.
Deliberately obfuscated nonsense........1998-08-27
I got about one-third of the way through this book, and then just couldn't continue. This is without a doubt the worst science book I've ever (tried to) read. Edelman goes out of his way to use unnecessarily long, ponderous phrases to describe simple concepts. This is presumably meant to impress you, but personally it makes me wonder what the author is trying to hide. How about this: that his ideas are neither new, nor original, nor correct.
Highly Recommended.......1997-02-10
Superlative. Outstanding scientific thinking and a must read for every neuroscientist. A few parts are too scantily discussed, but the text is (overall) of the highest caliber
Why the brain is nothing like a computer by a Nobel laureate.......1996-05-17
The distinguished Nobel Laureate proposes a global brain theory that demonstrates that the brain does not work like a computer but rather operates under principles of selection that assure individuality, autonomy, imagination, etc. Since this book was published in 1986, the essentials of its proposals have been confirmed and absorbed at almost all levels of neurobiological and psychological inquiry. More accessible are two subsequent books, "The Remembered Present" and "Bright Air, Brilliant Fire"

A good summary of tactics, this book does not go into the detail of some other texts (see Norman's book) but provides a street level view of what you need when you need it. It keeps it simple, and when the situation is really bad, simple is what you will remember.

Book Description
What will you do if you are unable to buy groceries or gasoline, or are unable to go to work or leave your home for a week? Two weeks? A month? How will you obtain the goods you need to survive? Don't rely on others to provide for you and your family in a time of need. If a natural disaster, personal crisis, or terrorist act disengages you from the mainstream for several weeks or months, you need to be prepared to survive on your own, with no help from the government or others, until the crisis has passed. This book will guide you through the necessary steps you need to take to become self-sufficient for a short-term disaster situation. It will also encourage you to add your own ideas to customize your plan of action to fit your own individual needs. You will end up with a vast knowledge that will separate you, the educated and prepared, from those who will only rely on others for their needs.

Book Description
A slight miscalculation can put even an experienced outdoorsman in a survival situation. Fortunately, most people who are forced to survive in the outdoors spend less than twenty-four hours "surviving." This book is made to help you in a real-life survival situation. You won't find complicated instructions for making snares; instead you will get straight talk on how to take care of yourself and get found.
Bob Newman bases his practical approach on both his own experience as a Maine wilderness survival instructor and outdoor enthusiast and on the knowledge and experience of his fellow teachers.
