Memoir of Panama's ambassador to the United States who waged a two-year battle against General Noriega to maintain control of the embassy in the name of the constitutional government of his nation

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great account of Panama and what happened in recent history.......2006-12-29

Noriega was one of the most controversial figures in Latin America. Sosa fought against Noriega and worked with the United States to bring him down. After being forced out of the embassy by Noriega Sosa would be one of the key figures to brining about his downfall. If you want an insiders look from someone who was involved this is a great start. If you are only learning about Noriega for the first time it can be a little daunting since this book does assume some knowledge of the affair. Overall though this book is worth your time to read.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book.......2004-07-10

I am clueless about international relations. However I think that Ambassador Juan B. Sosa`s book is a must read for anyone interested in Panamanian politics as well as US foreign relations. Written in a clever fashion, the book tells the story of Mr. Sosa`s actions as ambassador. It is not too technical to understand without any background information. Unfamiliar with the topic, it was interesting to learn about Panamanian-US relations during this period. I read it in a matter of two days because of the witty writings and thus I truly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Juan Sosa is a great writer!!!.......2003-10-24

Even if he is at time too pro american, Juan Sosa is a captivating writer. Although I would have loved to know more about the aftermath and still wonder why so many Panamanians died that famous day and so few americans.

4 out of 5 stars Reviewer: Ines Chamorro, OAS Cultural Officer (1962-1989).......2000-03-13

Ambassador Juan Sosa's IN DEFIANCE depicts the process and the strategy to restore democracy to his native Panama, and his personal battle even from his office in Washington, against one of the last military dictatorships that characterized Latin American governments for many decades. As a Colombian, I am compelled to hold a special view of the history of the construction of the Canal that eventually led to Panama's separation (we don't call it independence) from Colombia. Also, as a former 0AS staff member, I cannot but agree with the author's frustration in his dealings with the Organization especially in that particular period when its Secretary General, Baena Soares, Brazilian former minister of foreign relations, was himself a product of the military regime of Brazil. Ambassador's Sosa's endurance in his quest form Panama's sovereignty is clearly shown in his book written in such a manner that it holds the reader's attention from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Review for In Defiance.......2000-01-04

I found In Defiance to be a highly informative and at times exciting and inspiring book. Considering that I knew how the story ended before I began reading, the fact that I found it difficult to put it down is the mark of a good story teller. Even though I followed the Noriega crisis rather closely in the press as it unfolded ten years ago, the book provided many fascinating details that were told from an "insider" point of view. The close relationship between the Panamanian Embassy and the State Department was particularly interesting. Author Juan Sosa also intersperses the narration of the story with interesting information about Latin American politics (comments on the Organization of American States were especially interesting). I found this book to be of interest not only as an historical account, but also because of its relevance to U.S. foreign relations today -- for example, the ongoing debate about the U.S. obligation/right to intervene in the affairs of sovereign nations.

Book Description

For the "conspiracy theorist" in all of us--an eye-opening survey of conspiracies from biblical times to today.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-01-27

Mr. Jeffers has written a fascinating book that captures 100 conspiracies stretching from the beginning of time (Adam & Eve) all the way up to more recent ones (Enron, the snipers in DC, etc.) Each encapsulated vignette is highly readable and gives details of the background of each conspiracy, not too much, but enough to whet your appetite to investigate the story further.

Although Jeffers political viewpoint edges his way into the mix (he's obviously a conservative, given his preclusion to disparage Communists, but to either tone down or even dismiss anything that might reflect badly on conservatives and Repubicans), but this does not generally detract from the overall stories much.

It doesn't cover every thing, of course, or the volume would most likely be unmanageable to even pick up, much less read. The author doesn't spend much time with the more esoteric theories that abound among the counterculture (only one piece deals with aliens ["Aliens Among Us"]). given this, its probably not the ideal book for the conspiracy theorists, but for just general knowledge it is worth the price.

Book Description

The book discusses planning research, writing a research proposal (whether for a formal proposal for thesis research, or for a research proposal for a funding agency such as the National Science Foundation), writing a research report (such as a graduate thesis, or a manuscript for publication in a research journal), and presenting research at research seminars and scientific meetings. The final chapter covers writing an effective CV. An appendix provides tips on how to write clearly. Throughout, the book is illuminated with personal examples from the authors' own experiences and there is a strong emphasis on problems associated with field studies. This concise guide is intended for students at all levels. The guidelines apply equally to independent projects for introductory biology, directed-study projects, undergraduate senior theses, master's theses, doctoral dissertations, and research aimed at publication.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great guide for Biology research.......2000-04-04

This thoughtful book is a great read for all biologists, from the budding greenhorn to the seasoned old-goat. Although directed at the behavioral sciences, many biologists will find the enlightening but terse chapters a helpful framework when designing a future study (or refining one already underway). The first chapter is a concise explanation of scientific epistemology (a sorely neglected topic in academia) and how to design a study which will actually provide scientific knowledge; this chapter will be invaluable to young graduate students as it outlines how to find a problem and how to both formulate and test a model. Subsequent chapters outline (in a more tutorial fashion) how to: write research proposals, write research reports, present research and write a curriculum vitae. These discussions and instructions, coming from authors who have served on numerous reviewing agencies (both funding and scientific reporting) will certainly contain nuggets valuable to researchers at all levels. This book has served to re-focus my energies in more productive directions, and I sincerely think it will do similarly for other biologists.

5 out of 5 stars Good for non-Brits.......2005-09-27

I bought this book for an American friend taking her degree via a long-distance masters program (programme) in England. Not having Brits around with whom to confirm finer points of style and usage was a problem; this book was a big help. Easy, fast, uncluttered -- it provided the answers to the little niggling questions that would otherwise have caused some tossing and turning. Great little volume.

3 out of 5 stars Common Sense.......2001-07-11

This book is a good start if you have no idea how to go about writing a professional paper. If you have written long term papers in the past and have an academic advisor, this book may not be the one for you, but if you are on your own and have no idea what you are supposed to do... why not.

5 out of 5 stars the thesis writing bible.......1999-10-12

This book covers all aspects of writing a thesis or dissertation. The author is an experienced scientist and her PhD students are reknowned for their well written work. There are even tips on those lessons at school that you always fell asleep in - grammar! I don't know how I would ever have got through things without this book. An ironic sense of humour makes it all most readable.

4 out of 5 stars Compact and useful guide.......2005-03-21

I liked the book in general, its compact style and sound advice. It serves as a guide that maybe useful to grad students especially those in their first years, a recommended reading.
    What I didn't like was:
1- The first chapters were more like a research paper full of citations and quote that distracted me a lot from the main topic. Fortunately this style didn't continue for the later chapters.
2- If you are not a chemistry/psychology student you will feel uncomfortable sometimes since the books quotes many examples from those fields. But all in all is ok.
3- Still not what I wanted exactly, a book that covers the thought process for discovery, generating ideas, and the transition from the more relaxed/dependent style of undergraduate to the rigor/creative style of grad. school. Surely the book talks about this in one chapter or two but what I wanted was more devotion to these concepts.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT guide for first or second year grad students!.......1999-06-22

I would highly recommend this book for ANYONE planning to pursue a graduate degree in the sciences. Those early in their graduate career will also find it helpful. Dr. Smith covers several topics from the qualities of a good researcher, choosing the right school, choosing a thesis advisor, as well as scientific ethics and scientific writing. I have found this book very useful. I just wish I would have had it when I was a junior or senior in college!

              Book Description

The Ph.D. Process offers the essential guidance that students in the biological and physical sciences need to get the most out of their years in graduate school. Drawing upon the insights of numerous current and former graduate students, this book presents a rich portrayal of the intellectual and emotional challenges inherent in becoming a scientist, and offers the informed, practical advice a "best friend" would give about each stage of the graduate school experience. What are the best strategies for applying to a graduate program? How are classes conducted? How should I choose an advisor and a research project? What steps can I take now to make myself more "employable" when I get my degree? What goes on at the oral defense? Through a balanced, thorough examination of issues ranging from lab etiquette to stress management, the authors--each a Ph.D. in the sciences--provide the vital information that will allow students to make informed decisions all along the way to the degree. Headlined sections within each chapter make it fast and easy to look up any subject, while dozens of quotes describing personal experiences in graduate programs from people in diverse scientific fields contribute invaluable real-life expertise. Special attention is also given to the needs of international students.

Read in advance, this book prepares students for each step of the graduate school experience that awaits them. Read during the course of a graduate education, it serves as a handy reference covering virtually all major issues and decisions a doctoral candidate is likely to face. The Ph.D. Process is the one book every graduate student in the biological and physical sciences can use to stay a step ahead, from application all the way through graduation.

4 out of 5 stars The Ph.D. Process: A Student's Guide to Graduate School in the BIOLOGICAL Sciences.......2006-07-17

I'm coming to the end of my undergraduate studies (in PHYSICS!) and I was looking for some insight into what graduate school would be like to to try and figure out if a PhD is in the cards for me. This book is easy to read and FULL of useful tips. However the overwhelming majority of these nuggets of gold come from past PhD students in the medical/biological sciences. This began to get really annoying. I was constantly having to decide which comments to take onboard and which to leave behind (because I thought they wouldn't apply to me). As a result, I probably have in my head a very distorted picture of what grad school will really be like.
The title is very descriptive, it's just missing one word, but I suppose if they added it sales would drop significantly.

3 out of 5 stars good roadmap, bad guide.......2005-11-20

The book definitely unfold the whole map of graduate school life, especially for (biological) science students. Many aspects and stages of doing science research and how to survive in graduate school are covered. However, the lack of insightful guidence is the main drawback of the book. Pointint out possible obstacles does not necessarily makes gradute students' lives easier. The interviews from (past) graduate students do help readers build up confidence because it is comforting to know many people suffer as they do now, but at the same time few specific steps or directions are NOT distilled by the authors. It's like everyone just talks their experiences without any conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars For Science, Engineering, and Computer Science Grad Students.......2004-01-09

The following was copied from another website's review of The Ph.D. Process, and I think it describes the book perfectly:

Graduate school in science is not an experiential extension of undergraduate education, where the passing of a sufficient number of courses usually guarantees one a degree; nor is it medical school or law school, where there is a delineated and set curriculum. Ph.D students are actually pretty much on their own--and they will sink or swim depending upon their own interpretation of how the system works.

The purpose of this book is to provide students with some insight into this unusual system. The authors--each a Ph.D. in the sciences--reveal the generally unspoken "rules" of the game. They offer the secrets of survival and success: What should you discuss in your application essay? What types of research advisors should you avoid? What kinds of research projects should you never undertake? How hard do you have to work? Are grades important? What steps should you take now to make yourself "employable" when you finish? What decisions can make or break your career? How can you network in the scientific community? What goes on at the oral defense, and how can you prepare?

Described also is the daily experience itself: research life, classes, seminars, journal clubs, lab meetings, interactions with peers and professors, qualifying exams, professional meetings, oral exams, dissertation preparation, etc. Anxiety, frustration, and joy-- all normal responses to a grad student's life--are also examined. (In quotes sprinkled throughout the text, numerous past and present grad students relate their individual experiences and emotions during their doctoral training.) A separate chapter is devoted to the special problems of foreign students, strangers to our culture and educational system.

There are many intellectual and emotional challenges inherent to becoming a scientist. This book prepares students for each stage of the experience. They will learn what to expect--socially, psychologically, and academically!

5 out of 5 stars What Grad School is Really Like.......2003-01-08

The PhD process is a great overview of graduate school in the sciences. It covers most basic topics such as choosing a type of school, applying, preliminary exams, comps, thesis work, etc. Of course each school does these things slightly differently, but the main points are there and the authors do a good job of pointing out where differences between programs are likely to turn up. This book also explains things that graduate programs aren't likely to advertise such as using students as `cheap labor' and what things to look for in an advisor other than interesting research. This is a fun to read honest book, and the anecdotes from current and past graduate students are the best part. I enjoyed reading them because so many of the same things have happened to me, and it's nice to know that I'm not alone.

I wouldn't say that I received any great insights from the book because I had some experience with academic labs before I applied to graduate school and had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into. I found it a little calming to read about others' experiences as I was waiting to get started. I think most students who apply to graduate school have already spent much time in labs with current graduate students so this might not be that useful to them as practical advise; however, I found this book to be an excellent resource for my parents. My parents had no idea what graduate school is like, and the fact that I'm at school all day and only go to class for an hour baffles them to no end. Reading this book helped them to understand the structure and goals of graduate school. Though I still don't think they understand journal club. (Why would anyone join that club? It doesn't sound like very much fun.)

I recommend this book to grad students for their parents or to undergraduates who aren't sure if graduate school is the right path for them. This book gives great insight into what graduate school is really like.

              5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2002-02-01

This book should be required reading for anyone applying to gradutate school in the sciences (physical or biological). A quick read of the text will give one plenty to think about before making the big decision. The earlier you read it the better off you will be. The most important reading regards selecting an advisor. I am in the process of completing my degree and in hind sight agree with the issues on which the author has choosen to focus.
