Book Description

This book is a classic in genealogical literature. Filled with abundant legal citations and case histories, the text provides a wealth of valuable information concerning genealogical matters, including legitimacy, illegitimacy, marriage, birth, death, age, and identity. Also included are suggestions regarding locating critical facts and examples of those types of evidence necessary to prove or disprove matters which concern pedigree, heirship, inheritance, and will contests. In her column "Kinsearching," Marleta Childs says, "Genealogical Evidence is a must for every genealogical collection." It is an invaluable aid for genealogists, librarians, record searchers, historians, biographers, and lawyers.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for your genealogy how-to shelf.......2007-06-25

Stevenson was not only a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists, he was also an attorney with a national reputation in techniques in cross-examination and evaluation of legal evidence. In this volume, he brings all those skills together to create an authoritative text in the examination and evaluation of legal, historical, and genealogical information, a codification of proper methods. He begins with the application of family research in probate and heirship cases, since that's where the stuff that we do and what lawyers do most often impinge on one another. Under "Hazards, Risks, and Remedies," he discusses paternity and legitimacy, the problem of surnames and of proving identity (as opposed to descent), and the special problems of claims to noble lineage and false pedigrees. Then he examines the class of records that are "official and public": vital records (how accurate are they, really?), irregular and common law marriages, civil and criminal court records, land records, and the federal census. Then come "unofficial" records, including published family histories, church records, Bible records, monuments and memorials (especially in cemeteries), and newspaper articles and notices. Finally, he provides as astute but very readable semi-technical guide to the rules of evidence and hearsay. There's also a very good glossary of genealogical and legal terminology the researcher needs to know. Throughout, Stevenson includes synopses of illustrative law cases, research checklists, and his own informed opinions on the published work of other experts. This is the sort of book many researchers acquire with the best of intentions -- you can find it for sale in the book dealers' room at any regional or national conference -- but then it often sits on the shelf unopened because the Table of Contents seems intimidating. Trust me: It's a pretty easy read and it will definitely enable you to think more clearly the next time you have to decide whether and how far to believe a newly uncovered piece of data.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for certification requirements.......2007-06-08

A book that tells the difference between 1st source of evidence verses secondary. This is the only book, I was able to evaluate family pages found in the Bible. A Well written book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best genealogical books I've read!.......2005-07-11

I heartily recommend this book to any budding genealogists, and encourage them to read it sooner rather than later.

Stevenon's book is a compelling, if a bit dense, challenge to genealogists to be sure that what they claim can be substantiated witha preponderance of evidence. By emphasizing quality over quantity, and with view towards the standards of proof demanded by courts, Stevenson gives his readers the tools to produce credible and reliable genealogies.

Stevenson suggests to his readers that the distinction between professional and amateur is much less important than the difference between compentent and incompetent, and he will show you how to tell one from the other.

This is certainly one of the five best, and most important, genealogy books ever written. Following the advice contained herein will ensure that most genealogists will avoid the mistakes that are all too common in most family trees.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite resource for assessing genealogical info.......1998-12-04

This book has become one of my most-used genealogical helpers. It discusses the broad categories of genealogical source info (census, will, land record, newspaper articles, etc.) and comments on the qualities to look for to judge just how reliable the document is. I notched my review from five stars down to four only because the terminology used ventures into tricky-to-follow "legalese" in a few places.

5 out of 5 stars A different look at life during the American Revolution.......2004-01-29

Joy Masoff's "American Revolution, 1700-1800" from the Chronicle of America series is a supplemental volume that looks at this century of American history from a practical perspective. The reason for this is that the book is entirely illustrated with contemporary photographs from America's living history museums, so there are lots of pictures of reenactors and reenactments. Therefore it is concerned with questions like what colonial kids did for fun, how doctors treated their patients (leeches), and how everybody got from the springhouse to the outhouse.

Ultimately this book is more about seeing what American was like in the years before, during, and after the American Revolution than anything else. The chapters are arranged topically rather than chronologically and are devoted to topics like what people wore, what they ate (with a recipe for Apple Tansey), how criminals were punished, and what it was like to be a colonial soldier. The result is not a substitute for an American history textbook but a nice supplemental volume that teachers can use for images and details that provide greater depth on details of actual interest to younger students (what recess was like in the 18th century). This book is designed to tie in with middle-grade curriculum and it is perfectly suited to that task.

5 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool.......2001-11-14

Veteran teachers know that many resources must be used in teaching complex issues. This book is full of information and pictures that hold the interest of elementary students. I would highly recommend this book for teachers of early American history.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a fifth grade teacher.......2000-10-10

History sometimes seems to put my students to sleep, so I was very pleased to discover this book and its companion volume, Colonial Times. I was inspired by some of the projects and ended up having my very own Living History day. My students were fascinated, and it made for an involving, educational day--one that was never, ever boring! The children love the pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Good Thoughts on a Good Book.......2000-08-21

I am a student who, like many other kids my age, is forced to read those boring text books in school. I'm sure I can speak for most kids when I say that those text books teach me nothing. Most of the time my mind drifts away and I don't learn anything. I once thought that a good history book was never to be. This book proves me wrong. The pictures in this book are GREAT. The small drawings in assorted school books are nothing compared to the amazing, colorful photographs in Joy Masoff's book. This book was easy to read and unlike most history books, fun. The writing was excellent and that of which most kids my age could understand.

5 out of 5 stars Now History is Fun.......2000-08-21

I am a middle school student who never enjoyed history- that is, until I read this excellant book by Joy Masoff. I completely disagree with the Kirkus review. I believe that the many pictures made this book exciting and easy to understand. While reading my history text at school my mind usually drifts away on to other subjects. When reading this book on the American Revolution I was able to stay focused and get a deeper understanding of life in this time period. I cannot suggest a better book for anybody wanting to learn about the American Revolution. This book was fun and enjoyable and never had me wanting to put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Good review of the basics.......2003-06-12

I found the book helpful in reviewing basic electricity as I've been out of school for a number of years. I wasn't impressed with the experiments and lab exercises presented in the book though; the author could have done a better job of presenting those. It would be rather difficult to actually do these lab exercises as presented, you'd probably need to look for other sources to really set up the lab exercises unless you already have a lot of electrical skill.

4 out of 5 stars A bit outdated, but good nevertheless........2002-04-14

This is a very good book for the true beginner. You learn the basics of resistance, power, capacitance and inductances, and some stuff on motors. If you like simple, easy to follow pictures, this is a good book. However, there is also something lacking. What's lacking is up-to-date information--an idea of how to do useful things with useful components, such as IC's, microcontrollers, etc. I think it's a great book for the basic concepts, but not very good for practical applications. The book was written some time ago, so you can expect this to be the case.

This is a fantastic book. If you know nothing about electricaty and want to this is the book to get. It is in a workbook format and walks you through step by step. It makes a great reference guide was well. Highley recomended.

This is a VERY good introduction if you know absolutely nothing about electricity. The clarity of explanation, the organization of the material, and the self-test exercises help you to build a very solid knowledge of this important field. New material is introduced very gradually and smoothly.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2004-08-06

This book is a refreshing perspective for looking at elementary electronics from first principles.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to solidify their knowledge of electronics.
It is clear and very readable.

The previous reviewer points out that there are mistakes in the book. This is usual for new books and is a reason for the publisher to provide the corrections on a dedicated web page, like several computer book publishers such as Microsoft do.

I take my hat off to Ralph Morrison for a wonderful book.

1 out of 5 stars One must be wrong before he is right. . ........2003-10-18

I just began reading this book, reviewing some of the things I learned way back in High School in the '70s. I selected this one of several popular "coffee-table" texts, because, at a glance, it appeared to be really focused on the physics behind electricity.

When I reached page 13, however, I was thoroughly amazed to find that Ralph Morrison, who is supposed to be this hot-shot electronics engineer, has made some very serious errors in his presentation. For instance, he incorrectly identifies the unit of force in the metric system as the kilogram. Now, we all understand that unit to denote mass. The unit of force in the metric system (which high-scool Physics texts call the "MKS system," as opposed to the "CGS system," also metric, but useful for denoting smaller quantities) is, actually, the Newton. He then uses this bit of bad Physics to make more, by deriving the dimensions of the Joule as "kilogram-meters." Where he does make mention of "mass" and "acceleration" in his example about the work done lifting a body in a gravitational field, he supplies the variables "m" and "g" but, they are dimensionless. These are the same sorts of mistakes that beginning students make when they fail to understand that "weight" is a FORCE, not a measurement of mass. The weight of, say a brick, is not measured in kilograms. It's measured in Newtons.

These errors are absolutely critical when they appear in any discussion of field theory.

Because I do remember somthing about High-School Physics, I have been able to read this text and understand what the author is driving at; I have been able to accomplish this only by second-guessing the text at each step. I don't believe that a true beginner to this subject would be so lucky.

5 out of 5 stars very good on transistors.......2007-04-09

As others have noted, this really is an excellent book. It starts off slow with a review of DC and then covers the basics of AC and transistors. If you follow along and do the exercises you learn alot.

I really loved his nice development of transistors. He does it over 3 chapters.

The math consists of basic algebra so it's suited to high school level or amateur builder. Not really a college text.

The only book I've seen that matches this one for clarity is "Basic Electricity" by Van Valkenburgh, Nooger & Neville, Inc. ISBN: 0790610418. It's a reprint of the series first published by Rider. Also get the excellent 24 part series Navy Electricity & Electronics Training Series (NEETS).

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book.......2005-05-04

This is one of the best introductory books to Electronics anywhere. Highly recommended.

                    5 out of 5 stars Nice layout.......2004-03-09

The book is layed out well with nice diagrams. Not the hand drawn diagrams I've seen in other books. It is clear and concise. Several examples are given with each topic.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2002-05-15

You would gain maximum benefit from this book if you go slow as you read this book and finish all of the quiz questions. Please don't jump around between various chapters - just go slow and steady from chapter 1 to chapter 2 and so on!

This book does an excellent job of explaining basics/theory of electronics [almost]. The quiz questions are formatted in such a way that they make you think - and I liked that! My favourite subject area was the chapters 3 & 4 where author explains the workings of a transistor.

I recommend this book for beginners and intermediate level students of electronics who are looking forward to strengthen their understanding of the workings of electronic components.

                    Regards,
                    Shaukat

5 out of 5 stars Terrific intro or refresher to transistor operation........2001-07-05

I have been through a number of "intro to transistors" books. This is clearly the best I've read. Starts with review of basic DC theory, then it takes you step by step through the calculations of determining the current and voltage in simple transistor circuits. It progresses to circuits with multiple transistors; each step is accompanied with a schematic and example of math formula and method. The end of each chapter has review questions (with answers). Also has a chapter on basic AC theory and one on filters, resonance, etc. An extremely informative, and useful real world book without the heavy classroom theory! A welcome addition to my collection of actively used technical reference books.
