Book Description
Spanning two millennia from the Roman invasion in 43 A.D. to 1990 and including more than 4,00 incisive articles, The Columbia Companion to British History is the most authoritative, comprehensive, and accessible one-volume reference to the vast spectrum of British history. Six leading historians, recognized experts in their fields, have compiled this monumental volume which encompasses the historical experiences of the people of England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, both at home and abroad.
The book is an unparalleled resource for accurate information on the central strands of political, economic, social, religious, cultural, military, and women's history in the United Kingdom. In addition to a complete selection of articles on people, places, events, and institutions, The Columbia Companion to British History includes the best available coverage of major social movements and cultural concepts in their British contexts. Readers will find clear descriptions of por wallopers and teddy boys and concise explanations of such complex theoretical ideas as class structure and moral economy.
This unique reference contains chronologies of major events in British history and genealogies of its monarchs and prime ministers. Nine detailed historical maps depict tribal Britain prior to Roman conquest, various stages of Britain's colonial empire from the eighteenth century to 1930, and other critical eras in the nation's geographic past. Extensive cross referencing ensures that relevant topics can be easily pursued.
The Columbia Companion to British History is an indispensable source of information for historians and general readers alike. For non-British readers seeking back round on nuclear energy or capital punishment in Britain, on the dates and casualties. In the Zulu War, or simply on the origins of the term bluestockings, this is the most efficient route to definitive answers.

Book Description
This fascinating and thoughtful analysis explores the meanings associated with "Africa" and "Blackness" throughout the century. Using literary texts, autobiography, ethnography, and historical documents, African Identities discusses how ideas of Africa as an origin, as a cultural whole, or as a complicated political problematic emerge as signifiers for analysis of modernity, nationhood and racial difference. Kanneh provides detailed readings of a range of literary texts, including novels by, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Gloria Naylor,Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, Chinua Achebe and V.S. Naipaul. For anyone interested in literature, history, anthropology, political writing, feminist or cultural analysis, this book opens up new ways of thinking about race.

Management of Data in Clinical Trials (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)
ASIN: 0849376157 |
Book Description
The management of clinical data, from its collection to its extraction for analysis, has become a critical element in the steps to prepare a regulatory submission and to obtain approval to market a treatment. As its importance has grown, clinical data management (CDM) has changed from an essentially clerical task in the late 1970s and early 1980s to the highly computerized specialty it is today. Practical Guide to Clinical Data Management, Second Edition provides a solid introduction to the key process elements of clinical data management. Offering specific references to regulations and other FDA documents, it gives guidance on what is required in data handling. Updates to the Second Edition include - · A summary of the modifications that data management groups have made under 21 CFR 11, the regulation for electronic records and signatures · Practices for both electronic data capture (EDC)-based and paper-based studies · A new chapter on Necessary Infrastructure, which addresses the expectations of the FDA and auditors for how data management groups carry out their work in compliance with regulations The edition has been reorganized, covering the basic data management tasks that all data managers must understand. It also focuses on the computer systems, including EDC, that data management groups use and the special procedures that must be in place to support those systems. Every chapter presents a range of successful and, above all, practical options for each element of the process or task. Focusing on responsibilities that data managers have today, this edition provides practitioners with an approach that will help them conduct their work with efficiency and quality.
Customer Reviews:
Useless book.......2007-09-25
From the editorial comments this book seemed exactly what I was looking for: "covering the basic data management tasks that all data managers must understand, focusing on the computer systems, including electronic data".
However, it is a collection of facts and bulleted lists of things to do while conducting a clinical trial and I still do not find a single tangible example. This makes all that is written impossible to grasp and understand.
Also, have you ever seen a book without a reference list? Well, this is the first book I have ever read that is not a fiction book that does not have a single reference nor a reference list at the end of the book or of each chapter. This makes the book almost completely useless.
One could pardon typographical errors such as "this data" if the book was better. In this context, this kind of typos only give an extended idea of the bad quality of this book.
I feel as if I wasted my money and time reading it.

Book Description
Clinical data management (CDM) has changed from being an essentially clerical task in the late 1970s and early 1980s to a highly computerized, highly specialized field today. Clinical data managers have had to adapt their data management systems and processes accordingly. Practical Guide to Clinical Data Management steers readers through the role of data management in clinical trials and includes more advanced topics such as CDM systems, SOPs, and quality assurance. It helps readers establish GCP, manage laboratory data, ensure that DMB systems are in compliance with federal regulations, and deal with the kinds of clinical data that can cause difficulties in database applications.

Book Description
IUCN - The World Conservation Union and WWF - The Conservation Organization have been working with a range of other partners since 1999 to promote an approach called Forest Landscape Restoration. Their aim, through both practical projects and the provision of credible policy advice, is to promote ecological integrity and enhance human well-being in deforested or degraded forest landscapes by: * offering an approach to forest restoration that includes improving rural livelihoods: * producing a wide range of goods and services, rather than simply planting tress; * linking forest restoration and rehabilitation activities at the site level with the environmental, social and economic needs at the landscape and ecoregional level; * recognizing and attempting to balance land-use trade-offs; and * providing a multi-sector approach that ensures the participation of interest groups in decision-making.Much needs to be done to turn Forest Landscape Restoration from an idea that is implemented in a few pilot areas into mainstream practice that is adopted and promoted by governments and the private sector. Nevertheless, we hope that the approach can enhance the contribution of forests to rural poverty reduction, increase the productive capacity and commercial viability of existing land-use systems, minimize long-term, environmental and economic risk, improve ecosystem services, ensure greater habitat connectivity, mitigate against threats to forested areas and enhance biodiversity conservation. This book provides an important contribution towards the objectives of Forest Landscape Restoration and is essential reading for practitioners and decision makers involved in forest restoration.
