Book Description

This handy little reference book, first published in hardback in 1989, has now been updated and is available for the first time as part of the Oxford Paperback Reference series. With guidance from a small number of expert scholars from a variety of academic fields (such as Egyptologists and scholars in Islamic history) John E. Morby has created this compact and useful reference book ideal for anyone needing highly accurate but accessible data on monarchs, reigning princes, and ruling families. Motivated by the lack of any book of this type on the market John E. Morby here has combined his interest in the subject with his own extensive research. Ranging from Horus Aha, the first ruler of the first dynasty of Ancient Egypt, to Muhammad VII, King of Morocco since 1999, the text is composed of clearly designed chronological tables which show not only the various kings, queens, emperors, and empresses who have ruled the countries of the world but also the regencies, joint reigns, abdications and depositions, interregna and foreign rule, mandates, protectorates and dynastic unions. Lineages follow each ruler's name and are given in the male line (unless otherwise indicated) thus setting each reign in the historical context of that particular dynasty. The book charts the progress of rulers and ruling families through revolution and conquest, from autonomy to independence, and from independence back to autonomy. The tables are supplemented with notes providing further information on such issues as the problems of chronology and dating, non-western calendrical systems and early calendrical systems, and the meanings of certain monarchical titles throughout the world and throughout history. There are also bibliographies at the end of each table to provide the reader with a guide to the principal sources used and point the way to possible further research. Examples of some of the rulers and dynasties included: The Ancient Near East: Ancient Egypt (Horus Aha to Senedjemibre Nectanebo II), Assyria (Sulili to Ashur-uballit II), The Kingdom of Lydia (Gyges to Croesus) The Hellenistic World: The Kingdom of Macedonia (Perdiccas I to Perseus), Bithynia and Pontus (Zipoites to Pharnaces II), The Parthian Empire (Arsaces I to Artabanus IV) The Roman and Byzantine Worlds: The Roman Empire (Augustus to Romulus Augustus), The Herodian Kingdoms (Herod the Great to Agrippa II), The Kingdom of Armenia (Ashot I the Great to Gurgen II), The Empire of Trebizond (Alexius I to David) The Barbarian West: The Visigothic Kingdom (Alaric I to Agila II), The Ostrogothic Kingdom (Theoderic the Great to Teias) The British Isles: The Kingdom of England (Egbert to Elizabeth II), The Principality of Wales (Merfyn the Freckled to David III) France: The Duchy of Brittany (Alan I Wrybeard to Anne), The Principality of Monaco (Lambert Grimaldi to Rainier III) The Low Countries: The County of Holland (Dirk I to Jacqueline), The County of Brabant (Godfrey I the Bearded to Philip of St Pol), The Grand Duchy of Luxemburg (Adolf to John) Italy: The Kingdom of Naples and Sicily (Robert Guiscard to Francis II), The Este in Ferrara and Modena (Azzo I to Francis V), The House of Savoy (Humbert I Whitehands to Humbert II) The Iberian Peninsula: The Kingdom of Aragon (Ramiro I to Ferdinand II the Catholic), The Kingdom of Portugal (Henry to Manuel II) The German-speaking States: The Holy Roman Empire (Charles I the Great to Francis II), The House of Hesse (Henry I the Child to Ernest Louis) Scandinavia: The Kingdom of Norway (Harald I Fairhair to Olav V) Eastern Europe: The Kingdom of Bohemia (Borivoj I to Ferdinand I), Medieval Serbia (Stephen Nemanja to Stephen Tomasevic) Russia: The Princedom of Kiev (Oleg to Gleb) Crusader States: The Kingdom of Jerusalem (Godfrey of Bouillon to Henry II), The Empire of Constantinople (Baldwin I to Baldwin II) Islamic Dynasties (except India): The Caliphate of Cordoba ('Abd al-Rahman I to Hisham III, al-Mu'tadd), The Kingdom of Granada (Muhammad I to Muhammad XII), The Seljuqid Dynasty (Toghril Beg to Toghril III) India: The Maurya Empire (Chandragupta Maurya to Brihadratha), The Delhi Sultanate (Aybak to Ibrahim II), The Mogul Empire (Babur to Bahadur Shah II) The Far East: China (Shih Huang Ti to Hsuan T'ung), Japan (Jimmu to Akihito), The Kingdom of Laos (Kingkitsarat to Savangvatthana) Africa: The Ethiopian Empire (Yekuno 'Amlak to Asfa Wossen), The Kingdom of Madagascar (Andriantsimitoviaminandriana to Ranavalona III) The New World: The Inca Empire (Manco Capac to Tupac Amaru), The Aztec Empire (Acamapichtli to Cuauhtemoc), The Kingdom of Hawaii (Kamehameha I to Liliuokalani)

This is an excellent book. I enjoy it and it is quite helpful for reviewing the lineage of dynasties.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous from Korean point of view.......2004-01-21

From a korean point of view this book is quite ridiculous. While the author delved minutely and
far back into Japanese line, Korean line just starts at 1392, Chosun dynasty. Korean history is
as long as japanese one and it even might be longer. Japanese was greatly benefited by korean
kingdoms from B.C.*** to chosun dynasty(And how do they pay it? War..occupation..) This
book needs revision, at least for the korean line.

As a korean, I'm quite disappointed with the book. While japanese line was delved pretty minutely and far back, korean line was just ridiculous. Korean's history isn't shorter than japanese and it might be even longer. Japan actually was quite benefited from korean kingdoms for a long long time, since B.C. ** till Chosun dynasty. And the author listed 'just' Chosun dynasty that started about 1392. Just ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Too expensive for what it is (and isn't).......2001-08-10

A reasonably useful ready-reference tool, but quite expensive for its size. _Rulers and Governments of the World_ is a much better deal, and much larger. There are selective short bibliographies rather than notes. Not that bad, but not that terrific, either -- just redundant.

    Book Description

Who was â€~Jack the Ripper’? Was he some lone maniac â€~down on whores’? Or were the Ripper murders, as this book shows, the joint enterprise of a group of high-ranking desperadoes acting to protect the Prince of Wales’s heir, the Duke of Clarence, from blackmail? Many hitherto unknown facts are presented in this authoritative book, which was first published in 1991 and includes a foreword by Joseph Sickert. Melvyn Fairclough skillfully unravels the nexus of intrigue that has threatened the Royal family for three generations.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Absolute Rubbish.......2006-10-05

It is interesting how the author, probably to protect the name of his ancestor, cites Walter Sickert so often. I would highly recommend Patricia Cornwell's Jack the Ripper Portrait of a Killer - Case closed, which establishes beyond the shadow of a doubt that Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper. She matches Sickerts mitochondrial DNA to the stamps on the Ripper Letters, matches Sickerts rare and expensive stationary to the stationary of the Ripper letters, analyzes the red ink of the letters and establishes that it is in fact expensive artist's etching ground, even shows elements of the Ripper crimes in the artwork. The head of Scotland Yard even said that if the Ripper were alive today, there would be enough evidence to bring the case to court. This book is a sham and a waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Not this again.......2005-07-11

Not a good account at all. For some reason people really like conspiracy theories. The truth is more interesting. According to the "Casebook: Jack the Ripper" website, even the author of "The Ripper and the Royals" has disavowed it.

Read Sugden's "Complete History of Jack the Ripper" or Begg's new one, "Jack the Ripper: The Facts" (the 2004 edition, not the earlier one).

4 out of 5 stars startling information presented in biased light.......2004-11-21

This is an amazing book with a lot of research and information revealed that had been previously - supposedly - withheld or suppressed. But one should go into the book "reading between the lines". The forward from Joseph Sickert sounds the warning. He endorsed this book. Sickert had clear cut aims in seeing the view of this book slanted in one direction, precisely the same determination that saw the falling out between Stephen Knight (author of Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution) and Joseph Sickert in the 1980's. Stephan Knight remained convinced of Walter Sickert's involvement in the case - what Joseph Sickert desperately wanted to counter. That tells you up front Joseph Sickert had an agenda, and while he offered "facts" to support his claim, they are offered with the single intent of removing the blood of the Ripper, a stain on his family's heritage. If you did not accept his take on this case, you did not get the information.

Sorry, that taints the whole objective of his "repeated" tales and the removes "unbias" from the writer's effort. Sickert had a "natural reluctance" to reveal all the information he held. Why finally reveal it to Melvyn Fairclough? Because he finally found the one person to tell the story how he wanted it. Walter Sickert was supposedly possessed of an extraordinarily retentative memory, which Joseph, again supposedly inherited. Quoting the author "Joseph has inherited this faculty and remembers everything his mother and father told him." Such a sweeping statement shows immediately the author accepts every word as total verbatim, as fact. I possess a similar talent for memory, but I would NEVER say I remember everything. No one can! Time, attention and perception all play a role in what we can recall, how we recall.

While I don't agree with Cornwell's "case closed" book sighting Sickert as the Ripper, I do hold the opinion that Sickert was involved deeply in the White Chapel murders. Some of the tales he related were of things no one but someone there would be able to say in such details. One only has to look at Walter's paintings to see his closeness to the case. The very titles of his paintings are clues that should not be ignored. Walter Sickert unloaded these facts to his family. Do you seriously believe he would admit his own involvement? Or would he rather do as he actually did, present the knowledge as "second hand"?

This book is exciting, but should not be accepted as the "final solution". It is evidence presented by a writer influenced by his source's own drive to see his family's reputation restored, who likely did not get the whole truth handed down from Walter Sickert to begin with.

So read the book for the evidence, but leave the conclusions - when balanced with other works and evidence - to someone less admiring of their subject, a person determined to see this book written from one point of view.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Jack The Ripper!.......2002-11-26

Melvyn Fairclough's book 'The Ripper And The Royals' is the very best book written on the mysterious case of Jack The Ripper, next to Donald Rumbelow's 'Jack The Ripper: The Complete Casebook'.

Readers will find Fairclough's well-researched book 'The Ripper And The Royals' to be an astonishing and page-turning who-done-it! I've read this book twice and Fairclough, based on hard evidence, makes a first-rate, but often chilling case on the deep involvement of the British Royal family in the Ripper murder case. In fact, Fairclough clear's up a mystery behind a Scottish legend, that is also tied in with Jack The Ripper! Fairclough also documents that the behavior of the Royal family well into the 20th century, is based on their legacy from Jack The Ripper.

More importantly Melvyn Fairclough's 'The Ripper And The Royal's brings the reader back to 1888 London's East End, with it's gaslights, horsedrawn carriages, and cobblestone streets! The reader can join Scotland Yard's Inspector Abberline on the hunt for Jack The Ripper!

There's nothing more tiresome, either at the outset of a novel or thrust into the middle of one, than a lengthy description. So the sky was blue and the clouds a billowy white and a sheepdog lolled in the middle of the dusty lane. Get on with it, already. This is not to say that setting is not of utmost consideration to a fiction writer (or to any other writer). Jack Bickham applies the tip-of-the-iceberg theory to setting: "You should have a rich lode of factual information on hand before you begin to write," he advises here, "and should know how to sprinkle in those facts a few at a time." In Setting, from the Writer's Digest Elements of Fiction Writing series, Bickham explores the ways in which the setting one chooses affects the other elements of the story. "In real life as well as in fiction," Bickham warns, setting "tends to form character." The setting you opt for will determine what else you may and may not include in your story. Bickham has advice on how to communicate your setting to your readers, how to research a given setting, and how setting varies according to genre. He includes a "setting research form" that would be a nifty thing to take along when you're on the road. And remember, he says: "you must never deviate from verifiable facts." Even if the southern town you've chosen is completely imagined, you must never let the crape myrtles bloom before late summer. --Jane Steinberg

            Book Description

Setting is the unifying element in most fiction, working in concert with plot, characterization and point of view. 5 out of 5 stars Solid advice.......2006-03-05

Another excellent effort by Jack Bickham. Unfortunately his last book as he died afterwards.

Many nuggets of information that are indespensible for the writer. Here are a few:

When writing multi viewpoints you may want to introduce each viewpoint with a bit of setting to re-acquant the reader. For example. When Brenda, who just finished that horrible exam in History, left the classroom. . . .

Setting can set the mood. ie The dark clocktower with its crumbling facade rang yet again signifying Joe's soon demise. . . .

Setting should be brief and never stop the movement of a story.

Setting can provide a metaphor to underlie your story's theme.

How important it is for the setting to be factual.

When setting can be made up.

I could go on, but you should see the point. This is an excellent reference that will push your writing from hack to salable.

            3 out of 5 stars Exhaustive Information - A Good Reference.......2004-10-14

Who knew there was so much to setting? This is a difficult read from cover to cover (as I trudged through it), but it is a good book to keep around as a reference. Not excellent, but good. This isn't so much a "how-to" on writing setting but more of a "why setting is important".

At the beginning of the book the author (Jack M. Bickham) explains that not enough detail is given to setting in writing classes and offers this book as a means to fill that gap. However, Bickham touches on most aspects of writing from the perspective of setting. So, is your plot weak? Look at it from your setting.

I would recommend that you read the first chapter or two and then keep the other chapters in mind if you feel you are stuck in a story and believe that an adjustment to setting could bring your story back to life.

3 out of 5 stars Rating the Elements of Fiction Writing series.......2001-04-22

I've read all the books in the Elements of Fiction Writing series and this is how I'd rank them.

"Scene & Structure" "Characters & Viewpoint" "Beginnings, Middles & Ends"

The above three books are invaluable -- must reads. They are the best of the series, in my opinion, and are packed with good information on every page. Well-done.

"Conflict, Action & Suspense" "Description" "Plot" "Manuscript Submission" "Setting"

The above five books are good, solid reads. Again, they contain good information and cover the subject decently.

            "Voice & Style" "Dialogue"

To me, the last two books need to be rewritten. They are by far the weakest of the series. Both suffer from an annoying style, particularly Dialogue, and both are very skimpy on real information. Neither one is very helpful.

This is the order in which I'd recommend reading them.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping the Focus.......2000-07-05

Another Writer's Digest book that offers a multitude of ways ensure that your reader has a visual and sensual focus on place and time in your stories. The author not only tells you why setting is so important in supporting the plot and characters, but gives pleanty of exercises to help you create a clear picture of where and when your story takes place.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable Information at so little cost!.......2000-03-09

As a "mature" student I was in awe of the insights the author was giving us which he has obviously learned on the anvil of experience. As an avid reader I was able to relate to his comments and advice and found myself nodding in agreement. This book is easy to read and full of practical advice, and examples, just the book for budding writers.

            J. B. Jackson, a pioneer in the field of landscape studies, here takes us on a tour of American landscapes past and present, showing how our surroundings reflect important changes in our culture. Arguing that our urban environment makes us increasingly concerned with time and movement rather than place and permanence, Jackson examines the new vernacular landscape of trailers, parking lots, roads, and shopping malls, and traces the development of dwellings in New Mexico from prehistoric pueblo villages to mobile homes.

4 out of 5 stars J.B. Jackson's Sense of Place, Time and Profundity.......2003-12-27

J.B. Jackson's reflections drawn from his many years' work in landscape architecture make a wonderful read for any interested in the burgeoning category of 'place' studies. Free of postmodernese yet relevant to contemporary sensibilities, his book 'A Sense of Place, A Sense of Time' is an informative, warm and welcome survey of issues he's encountered in a life in the profession.

                            Book Description

Forests define the Pacific Coast in many ways. Culturally they are part of the traditions of the First Nations; economically they have sustained an industry that has created settlements and wealth throughout the area. In the last twenty years, the forests have become the subject of increasing conflict, as economic interests clash with changing social and political values. The war in the woods has escalated, hardening battle lines and polarizing forest politics.

In this thoughtful collection of essays edited by Debra J. Salazar and Donald K. Alper, forest policy in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and British Columbia is examined in a binational context. While US and Canadian forest policy and forest management approaches differ, the two countries face similar challenges and conflicts. Contributors discuss the evolution of forest exploitation, the response of timber companies to U.S. federal environmental regulations, sovereignty for First Nations communities, and the reshaping of the political economy of forests by global forces on both sides of the border. Groups usually ignored in the forest policy debate -- such as First Nations peoples, workers in the emerging non-forest economy, and citizen activists -- are also given voice in this fascinating compilation.

The contributors to Sustaining the Forests of the Pacific Coast offer new perspectives that recognize the complexity of the issues and the diversity of interests in forest politics. A valuable contribution to the ongoing debate over forest policy on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border, these essays analyze the challenges facing forest policy makers and open the discussion up to those whose voices have not been heard before.

                            4 out of 5 stars A Fair Assessment of Complex Value-based Conflict.......2004-02-23

This book offers a series of excellent essays by respected policy analysts. As a university research student I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the book to others interested in gaining a serious understanding of the dynamics of policy-making in contested resource regimes featuring intractable value-based conflicts.

                            1 out of 5 stars A major disappointment.......2001-07-13

I eagerly read this book with the expectation that it would be as good as Alper's other political works. I was very disappointed by the bias of the book towards the enviro-groups and the lack of respect for the timber community. A balance would have been nice to see. Perhaps Salazar, an author I had not read before, pushed Alper's work in the extreme enviro direction. Because of its strong bias, I cannot recommend it.
