The United States Cavalry: An Illustrated History, 1776-1944

Book Description
The author explores in detail the history of mounted warfare which in reality is a history of war itself. For over 3,000 years the mounted warrior was a dominant figure, mobility and speed of the horse were invaluable, and the charge itself often the defining moment of any battle. The author has gone to great lengths to make this a highly readable, well researched, beautifully illustrated history. This book will delight everyone interested in military history and those who are thrilled by the special 'romance' of the horse in warfare.

Book Description
In this wide-ranging and often controversial book, Robert Drews examines the question of the origins of man's relations with the horse. He questions the belief that on the Eurasian steppe men were riding in battle as early as 4000 BC, and suggests that it was not until around 900 BC that men anywhere - whether in the Near East and the Aegean or on the steppes of Asia - were proficient enough to handle a bow, sword or spear while on horseback. After establishing when, where, and most importantly why good riding began, Drews goes on to show how riding raiders terrorized the civilized world in the seventh century BC, and how central cavalry was to the success of the Median and Persian empires.
Drawing on archaeological, iconographic and textual evidence, this is the first book devoted to the question of when horseback riders became important in combat. Comprehensively illustrated, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of civilization in Eurasia, and the development of man's military relationship with the horse.

Excellent Over-View of Horse Warfare Developement.......2007-08-30
Another excellent book from Prof. Robert Drews. As with "Coming of the Greeks", and "End of the Bronze Age", Prof.Drews focuses his careful research and rational arguments on an interesting topic on which there is a lack of consensus.
The focus of the book is to examine the history of the use of horses for warfare. Prof.Drews challenges, and indeed does a good job demolishing, the traditional view held by many, that the peoples of the steppes of Central Asia have been great horsemen and mounted warriors (especially mounted archers) since the Bronze Age or even the Neolithic Age. Prof.Drews demonstrates that no such evidence exists, and that rather all evidence points to good riding dating back to no earlier than the early Iron Age (around 1,000 bc or so). He concedes that men no doubt did some awkward riding for centuries before, as pictorial/statue representations from the Near East demonstrate, but that only in the Iron Age did men master riding well enough to be able to do active hunting and fighting with it.
Prior to that time, horses, specifically on the steppe, were mostly used for food or for chariot/cart-pulling (the latter also in the Near East).
As with his others books, Prof.Drews carefully goes through various counter-theories, and shows them to be unfounded in their assertions.
His arguments about the effectiveness of mounted warfare, of cavalry vs. infantry, may not be as soldid as his other points, and will seem so for anyone who knows about military history, but these are minor points, as the main focus of the book is the developement of mounted warefare, not its tactical uses in battle.
Prof.Drews' style is very easy, and can be read by lay-man and professional alike, though some basic knowledge of the history of the regions covered would be good.
Unfortunately, in this book Prof.Drews once again continues his habit (noted by other reviewers of his other books) of giving quotes in other languages, such as German, without translating them. A habit that will no doubt frustrate those who are interested in his references.
Overall, another great book from Prof.Drews. I hope he continues to write books on such great topics.

Clear and Incisive Study.......1999-07-20
J. Phillip Langelleir, the co-author has produced a slew of photo studies with incisive text on the life and times of the U.S. soldier, and his Spanish and Mexican californio predecessors also. His specialty is in gathering together contemporary source material for the illustrations. This method has the great virtue of showing what was what and when. But if no photos are available, then something may be omitted. All of these books are vertical studies covering a period of years. Though sometimes the illustrations serve to identify individual items of equipment, these works are not intended for that purpose. They are not catalogs intended for materiel collectors. They are of such a length and of such a level of detail that they will serve the purposes of the general reader with a curiousity about what grandaddy did in WW II or great great great grandaddy in the Civil War and what he looked like and how he lived. This is not to say that the specialist such as myself cannot find useful nuggets herein. I can. I use these for general surveys of periods I do not study in detail, such as the Civil War, and the War With Mexico, etc. And to look up the odd facts. I have yet to be disappointed with any of them.

Book Description
In April, 1727, the French writer Voltaire viewed with astonishment the preparations for the funeral of Sir Isaac Newton. The late President of the Royal Society lay in state in Westminster Abbey for the week preceding the funeral on April 4th. On that day, his pall was borne in a ceremonious
pageant by two dukes, three earls, and the Lord Chancellor. "He was buried," Voltaire wrote, "like a king who had done well by his subjects."
Over the three hundred years since the publication of his Principia Mathematica, Newton has come to symbolize the ideal of scientist and mathematician par excellence. Let Newton Be! (the title comes from a famous couplet by Alexander Pope) explores the richness of Newton's life, labors, and
legacy. What kind of scientist was Newton? What connections are there between the different strands of research he undertook? Why were his contemporaries so in awe of him? How has Newton's work left its mark on our understanding of the world? To address these questions, each chapter addresses a
different aspect of Newton's life and work, making use of much new evidence about Newton uncovered in the last two decades. They consider Newton's work in mathematics and optics, his secret experiments with alchemy, his religious views (which were unconventional), the negative reaction to his work
(as seen, for instance, in the poetry of William Blake), and his legacy for modern science. We learn that, were it not for Edmund Halley, Newton probably wouldn't have written his Principia at all; and that much of his work on planetary motion derived from his correspondence with Robert Hooke, a man
Newton came to hate because he demanded credit for his contributions, which Newton refused to give.
Richly illustrated, vividly written, and based on the latest scholarship, Let Newton Be! is an absorbing introduction to the legacy of Britain's greatest scientist as well as a fascinating study in the history of ideas.
Customer Reviews:
A real eye-opener!.......1999-06-11
More than any other I have found, this book brought Isaac Newton to life: as a brilliant human being, but still just a human being, with as broad a spectrum of flaws, quirks and vulnerabilities as any of us have. It shows him more as some of his contemporaries may have seen him, before the publication of the Principia began to transform him into a shining demigod of the Enlightenment. It does shine a light on his admittedly obsessive (but still sensible, focused, meticulous and sincere) investigations of theological and alchemical claims that mattered greatly to his generation. Many of these investigations proved to be fruitless, but that does not diminish the man. For these claims lost much of their interest to later generations precisely because the new analytical tools that Newton published in the Principia enabled revolutionary advances in physical knowledge that rapidly pushed alchemy and theology onto the sidelines of intellectual history.
Truly a wonderful, balanced and satisfying collection of essays, each written by an expert in a particular perspective on Newton's life and work. I would welcome publication of similar collections of lucid, expert essays on Robert Boyle and Charles Darwin.

Best Self-Improvement Program is now Even Better.......2007-08-22
I'd been fortunate enough to find the book and original cassette version of this program on amazon years ago. I listened to the tape so many times while driving that I wore it out. This 8 CD set has a lot more information than the original. You can tell Mr. Kyriazi has continued to learn and practice his techniques.
From the introduction by David Hedison (Felix Leiter in two of the James Bond movies) through the "Clearing the Subconscious Mind" session on the last CD, this set places a powerful set of tools in your hands. Tools you can use to improve your lifestyle.
Since I first listened to Mr. Kyriazi's program, I've upgraded my life signifcantly. I found my "Bond girl," got my first novel published, and drive a new Mustang GT. I don't know if any of these things would have happened if I hadn't discovered (and implemented) these well-thought out and explained techniques. Thanks, Paul!
I can't recommend this strongly enough to anyone who is interested in improving his lifestyle.
Not everyone can be a Double 0, but YOU can change that !.......2007-08-12
so i was already in the mode of a Double 0....buying this CD was all i needed to simply push myself forward into being a Double 0 ( no kills please )...in a way the CD purchase was like M promoting me into double 0 status..listening to it was like i am shifting gears upwards...
Every since i bought the CD set and listened to it, i have already noticed changes in myself. I hit the gym more than usual having lost 10 pounds so far, i have a new 007 watch, no not Omega but a Graham by British masters ( i think each agent should choose their own kind of watch ), i have a gold coin just for that good feeling....etc.
This review might seem juvenile to some readers but you must understand that success is not meant for everyone. You must be a person wanting to want it. badly enough i might add. This CD allowed me to see that and push myself forward into what i knew i always wanted.
I think we all need a little imagination in our lives, makes our days a little more adventurous...
Next year i will vacation at Paradise Island at the Ocean Club ( i already hv their number )...go do some diving, i am tryig to work harder and smarter at work to increase my salary base so i can "maybe" afford an aston martin...its a far fetch goal but not impossible, if anything its so worth the try .. plus other things.
So i hope you will too do something that will improve your life. Remember a lot of people will say you are silly or think you are silly but what YOU think of yourself is more important. i used to always listen to my friends and familly i might add....got me nowhere...so i woke up one day and said i am going to listen to ME....in a year i become the owner of some real estate ( on two continents ), swam with stingrays, started organizing my life together, turned everything into missions, got what i needed from Q branch and already found myself improving etc...
so please dont give up on yourself. You are the best thing that ever happened. And if you have the money to spare, then buy this CD set...its a great motivational tool and maybe the kickstart you need to get up from that couch and do something.
Welcome to double 0. See you in the field. Next year you will find me at the Ocean Club playing cards or drinking a martini, or on the beach..trust me you wont miss that double 0 look...if you do see me, say hello....i would love to meet another double 0.
best...F
I Never "Say Never" heard a self-help book like this .......2007-07-12
I had the book, so I knew about the seriousness of the subject, by a guy that's obviously applied what he is preaching. However, this eight hour marathon of one good idea after another, really took me by surprise. The author's authoritative voice, with support of other actors, made going from one disc to the other a real trip, that seemed to cover every possible way to get ahead imaginable. From now on, I probably won't be satisfied with other self-help audio-books, if they only have one speaker, no effects, or music. This audio-book got me spoiled.
I was already using the ideas from the book, but seems like there's double the info, in the 8 CDs. Anyway, double the energy for sure. I like the way each disc is marked for each topic, and unlike the author figured, I didn't skip to the disc on Bond girls first. I listened from the beginning. I'm not a gambler, but his 'always win in the casino' made sense to me, anyway, fun to hear it. And I'll certainly use valet parking if I go to Vegas, after hearing the funny example of parking yourself with your Bond girl.
David Hedison's introduction surrounded by Bond music really kicks it off. I'm thinking he could do his own motivational book, especially for wannabe actors. But for wannabe Bond's, I guess, this would be the course needed. I give it two thumbs up.
Live it up!.......2007-06-30
The author provides specific, actionable tips for planning and executing your "missions". Good, down-to-earth advice.
Plan adventures, dress well, be 007.......2003-03-09
I already consider myself successful having achieved many of my personal goals. And although I've been studying and achieving success for years, I had gotten stale and complacent. In other words I began to go into a dirty t-shirt wearing, couch potato mode. Then I bought this tape and, as absurd as it sounds, galvanized my entire life back into action and positive progress.
The important aspect of the tape (and book) is the re-programing of your mind and asserting control over your negative emotions. This sounds wishy-washy, but it's the real gem. Once you begin to ask yourself "what would James Bond do in this situation" it all falls into place. You will not believe the results and turn your life will take.
You begin to immerse yourself in a lifestyle that promotes action and excitement. You plan adventures, you dress well, you act (and then become) confident. You exude prosperity. Much of the by-product of all of this is attracting women.
This tape scratches the surface but it is one of the best. I then recommend you get the book. I have listened to and read a lot of personal improvement products over the years. This one has lots of realistic techniques: not just theoretical advice. Highly recommended.

Book Description
It's a sturdy, brightly illustrated board book, which makes it just right for very young children. But Storyboard books have more than clever pictures! They have a story to go with them that will delight little boys and girls. Let's Go! tells about animal friends who are off on a trip in Elephant's car. "Where are we going?" asks Giraffebut Elephant isn't ready to say. It's supposed to be a surprise. They aren't going to visit Leo the Lion, and they're not going shopping, or to play in the park. At last they arrive at their destination. They're at the seaside! Pre-school boys and girls will love the large and vivid illustrations. Sturdy board covers and pages will withstand rough treatment from little hands.

Great story for pre-schoolers.......2001-08-22
This book has everything you could want in a children's storybook. It has a plot with humour and suspense and has beautiful artwook to go with it. Moreover, it makes excellent use of English at just the right comprehension level. It provides excellent examples of sentence construction while holding interest from page to page. My daughter and I love reading this book in the evening just before bed.
